I Did not mention the Philippine-American War (1899-1902). This took place during the United States Military Government of the Philippine Islands 1898-1902 at 6:45 into the video.
The Philippine-American War was an armed conflict between the First Philippine Republic and the United States. I should have included this.

The British Manila part blew my mind! Never knew that took place. Or did I miss any class when they teach this.
Thank you for this video because a lot of people both foreign and local think the natives were civilized only when the Spanish colonized us... it's sad.
The Spanish brainwashed people into believing that they civilized the natives but they also made the Boxer Codex which depicts the natives in expensive silk clothings and lavish gold jewelries.

It was obvious why the Spanish colonized the archipelago.
The biggest misconception about my country is as if we started our history when spaniards arrived in 1521.
Before Spaniards arrived your country as such did not exist, but a bunch of divided islands and tribes. The name of your country is the name of the Spanish king at that time. USA and its allies in Europe have been working hard to undermine Spain. You were a province in Spain, not a colony. Anglo Saxon culture is a criminal one along with Dutch.

@@Edhilues The Phillipines before colonialism wasn't united though? It being an archapelago made it so that a lot of groups had their own culture which is still visible today. The fact we have over a hundred official languages is proof of this. We never forgot our original languages from before colonialism. The Phillipines before colonialism was more like multiple different countries/groups/tribes made up of immigrants from multiple different ethnicities and neighboring countries

Raja - Datu - Bayan. Quite similar to Lombok, Indonesia. We also call our parent quite the same. Ina (mother in the Philippines) = Ina' (Mother in Lombok, Indonesia). Ama (Father in the Philippines) = Ama' (Father in Lombok, Indonesia). There are also many other similar words.

Awesome video! BUT:
The Spanish were able to gain control of the coastal areas of the northern and central islands, but not the southern islands, where Islam was deeply rooted, and the jungle interior and highlands, where indigenous tribes, including headhunters, were able to repel Spanish incursions.
Because the Spanish were focused on more important matters than taking even more jungles and islands which they already had in abundance the world over during the glory days.
Some parts of the Philippines aren't occupied by the Spaniards by 1700's-1800's. It took a lot of time to colonize the whole of the Philippines. The Spanish did eventually establish a presence in Mindanao by 1800's though.
The Spaniards never gained any foothold deep and/or had never established any major control here in what is now the Cordilleras despite their strong military due to stiff and stubborn resistance by the Igorots

@Matthew Tenorio_3200654 True, there were Datu whom had enough wealth/influence to be treated like a Rajah, but still held the title of Datu. To the point that there are cases where the titles "Datu" and "Rajah" are interchanged. Take for example Datu Sumakwei or Later on Datu Puti, they were the respective leaders of the 10 Datus of Madjaas during their individual reigns. They were Datu but we treated like Kings at the time. In context of this video I'm just providing direct translation of the terms.

The karakoa ships were more bigger and had more people than the Spanish galleons. It would have been interesting to see the result if spain fought head on and did not trick our datus into forging “alliances”

My father’s family were the Cheiftains of Ifugao, the Igorots of this area. (I say this bc many people I’ve encountered are embarrassed or down play their Igorot lineage.) My mom’s maternal grandfather was the great Datu of modern day Benguet (Igorot Area). After the US politically organized the mountains of Luzon, the US appointed him as mayor of Kapangan (which drastically shrunk his fiefdom). When you visit the courthouse of Kapangan you will see, Fianza’s name in the list of chiefs and mayors. For some clarification, the US gave large portions of Igorot lands of modern day Baguio and Benguet to several rich and politically savvy Ilocanos. That is why igorots have not historically been mayors of Baguio or have been at the high end of business leaders. Basically, we were cut out of the democratization of our lands.
Let me add a thanks and this. You had many correct and long forgot facts. Among them were the gold anklets. My dad’s dad told me of these ornaments. Men of high ranking in Ifugao would wear them. In fact, the more worn, then the more prestige. Also the louder they became while walking. This sound of several anklets clanging was the sound of a member of Ifugao high society-besides having certain facial tattoos but that’s another story...

Also ilocanos seem to be racially more similar to igorots and it seems to me that they were simple lowland igorot who were force christianized by spain.
It seems apparent that the kingdoms of kaigorotan and katagalugan (which was the kingdom of tondo and included kapampangans and bicolanos) were the greater kingdoms whih existed in luzon in oldened days(funily kapampangan seems to mean from the banks of the river and tagalog actually came from taga ilog from the river)
Im happy you know you truly come from these lands. I sadly cannot as most of my ancestors were the insular spaniards and their bastards the "mesrizos". We were in a sense the primal Filipinos as i believe that the Filipino identity is a synthetic, colonial identity. Most of my people were the latest and most virulant immigrants to these lands.
The original inhibitants however... the austronesians and the malays and the others were classed differently but they should not be ashamed of who they are and that they should stand proud that they are not originally filipino.

Lakan means Elder or chieftain. Those came from the north of the Philippines. Datu's and Maharaja are from the Visayan Island and northern Mindanao. Your depiction of a Filipino native with a bolo or weapon, wearing a towel, necklace and all the adornment with a funny head cover, is the imagination of the Spaniards. People of Panay came from Panai, Sumatra. They were a part of a Buddhist Thalassocratic Empire, that dominate much of the western Maritime of Southeast Asia, due to its location by the Strait of Malacca (circe 700-1200 ad). It controlled what could be the equal to the Panama Canal of today. In 1200 the Empire collapse because it was conquered by the Majapahit and the Chola empires from south India. The Vijayan refuse to be enslaved by the conquerors fled towards the Philippines in Panay which name came from Panai, Sumatra. Some fled as far as Madagascar. The story is longer than you imagine. Get it right.
Had some Filipino friends, they literally don't know anything before the arrival of the Spanish. I just tell'em your ancestors must have some greatness since the maritime silk road passes their country. There MUST be AT LEAST 1 trade kingdom in the Philippines that they just don't know about. Same can be said about other former colonies of Spain (Aztec/indigenous culture)but what happened has happened - it’s history and we can’t change it. Yes, the Spanish period in the Philippines had consequences but it also brought positive reforms and consequences (culturally, socially).

Rizal originally fought/ campaigned for the Philippines to be recognised as a province of Spain. He wanted a peaceful reformation of the Spanish government that was ruling the Philippines back then.

I’m Filipino and I’m adopted so I really enjoyed learning about my cultural roots. I always wondered what Philippines was like before Spanish rule. It’s sad to see the native identities almost got nearly wiped out. I’m happy to see that there are people keeping the native beliefs and customs alive.

the filipino history curriculum only serves the essentials of filipino history that all filipinos should learn about. you need not learn the specificalities of each and every historical detail. if you were extra curious about it, you could just take a history course and major there or research it as a hobby on your own. we do not have a very detailed specific study of the prehispanic histories of the country and the new things you hear about the old prehispanic states are also just recently discovered in the past decades or doesnt have enough substance yet. something our curriculum has not updated yet or has seen no need to disseminate mandatorily to every philippine school as of yet since its not essential and not as perfectly understood yet.

Filipinos are naturally very hardworking and willing to take any job although the problem could be is that they have no selfworth anymore but they're just not as finicky as other people. Also, because the pay in here is not as high in other countries more people tend to seek greener pastures and work abroad, building other nations while their own country lacked the best professionals cause they're elsewhere making other countries more successful.
People remained Catholic because of the teachings and their own choice.

Actually, Marcos Era was focused on uplifting the dignity of Filipinos. We have 6 vowels in the IPA if we don't count the dipthongs. The schwa /ə/ is common in the Philippine languages.

99% of Filipinos do not have any “Spanish blood” as it’s a tiny minority because Spain did not colonize the Philippines in the same way they colonized territory in the Americas. Filipinos having Spanish surnames is a result of a law that passed in 1849 where a Spanish naming system was implemented on the population and given to Filipinos. Many of us Filipinos have Chinese ancestry but not Spanish ancestry.
So Latin American colonies were often "settler" colonies to where spaniards migrated (think USA, Canada, Australia-style colonies, made up mostly of migrants who didn't originate from there) and intermarried with most of the population.
Philippines was an "extractive" colony, there for trade. More like the African colonies or the British in India. Spaniards didn't intermarry and migrate there in large numbers, they traded and opened plantations.
As a general rule, when I'm teaching colonial history, I explain that these are the two main types of colonies to the kids. It's fairly easy to understand and is broadly accurate, though on a micro level it's always more complicated than that

That’s probably why many elder Filipinos weren’t so apologetic when they dropped the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Manila was reduced to rubble.

Did not notice that....But the barang-"gay" misprounciation is annoying. He should have just described it as "close independent communities" ruled by elders. That term was not even invented until the 1970s during the "Bagong Lipunan" of Marcos. It was derived from the word "balangay" which was the boat the settlers used to established communities along the islands. In the Spanish era they were termed as "barrios" until the 1970s.
Whether the prefix "arch-" is pronounced arch or ark is subject to very esoteric "rules". That said archipelago is a common word...

Marcos senior is the best president in the Philippines becoming "Maharlika" tiger of economy in Asia second to Japan in his regime. imagine the equivalent of one dollar US was two pesos and he invested golds in the US Federal/Federal reserve lock for 50 years I believe it will mature in the year 2025 and also invested in Swiss banks for the benefit of the Filipino people. in his regime Maharlika was exporting rice, now we are importing rice. Meralco and Mwss was government owed and every year people receives surplus money given to the consumers, now privatized by the cronies of Aquino and even oil and gas pricing was controlled by the Energy regulatory board but deregulated by Ramos in favor to the big companies Shell, Petron and caltex. now the government is bankrupt by the greedy 5 presidents. today President Duterte is trying his best to stop corruption bringing back the plans of Marcos senior one is the free water irrigation and prioritizing the agriculture sector and education which the past 5 Presidents neglected.

There is a kind-hearted king who comes from Suwarnadwipa(Sumatra) named Balaputradewa from the Sailendra dynasty who is a Buddhist descendant of Wirawairimathana who helped spread Buddhism in Nalanda India.
Also, there is another ancient site that Filipinos used to live in before the Spanish came. They were called Idjangs in Batanes.

That's really cool man cool video I got to hear some of my Filipino history. My grandfather was shot in the leg as a boy while fleeing the Japanese that were taking over him and his father were trying to escape and he caught a bullet in the leg during the takeover. It was cool that you brought up the Japanese attacking the Philippines.
My Maternal grandfather survived the Japanese war in the Philippines by surviving in the mountains too. We live south of Luzon.

I like your videos because they are simple, they have good animations and you explore the different groups and kingdoms of each zone you analyze. Plus, you explore some cultural aspects, and THAT is what interests me! I'd really love it if you'd explore those more in depth! I think your video format would be perfect for that.

I am a Filipino. My grandfather and my husband's grandfather who worked with the Americans during the colonization told us many good things about Americans. We know that they love the Americans. As I read the comments it seems like many young people are misled. Americans freed Filipinos from Spaniards slavery, introduced education and health for all, they built the Philippine General Hospital where I worked to help poor Filipino people to have an access to quality care. Literacy went up after the American colonization. This is why we are globally competitive. I am grateful to America and this is where I live now.
