Sir, the graciousness of your encomium is humbling and honoring to hear, especially when considering the sage astuteness of the expert providing it. One whose opinion I respect.
And yes, your deduction is correct -- you & I share the same general age zone.
Cheers, and warmest regards, sir. I just wanted to acknowledge your recognition. I will retreat to the quiet background again now, at least until the next "breakthrough". But please know that in the meantime, I will continue to anticipate, admire, enjoy, and appreciate your rich and robust Observational Acuity. 😉

Sometimes, I've found that simply changing out a watch's strap can re-ignite the bond I had with a particular piece and give me whatever feeling I was seeking by looking at new watches.
Often the desire to hunt for a new acquisition isn't actually about getting a new watch; it's about rekindling that feeling of discovery and bonding we miss. There are many ways to get that feeling and grow in appreciation of what you already have without resulting to buying a whole new piece outright. That should, arguably, be the last option.

Spot on! This is true. You can try, but you will lose. Time after time. Same outcome. Been there several times. But I never learn 😂

"Fate has successfully conspired against me."
I get a notification that this video is up. I queue it on my UA-cam, ready to cast it onto my TV as soon as I get home. However, once I get home, I receive another notification; one of the local ADs just received the SLA023 I inquired about over the weekend and they close in a couple of hours. Now I normally "sleep on" a purchase this big, however, I tell myself that I've already been sleeping on it for a while now and I just need that disqualifier (like, "Aha, I knew it would too big for me!") at the AD. "Unfortunately", that was not the case, I was enamored with it as soon as I saw it on wrist. I am currently watching this video, Marinemaster on wrist, telling myself this feels like a win, with a creeping doubt in my mind, not necessarily about the purchase itself, but how quickly I pulled the trigger. Self-sabotage? Maybe, but this time I will try to forsake the rotation and try to continuously wear this for the next 30 days.

Super impressive. I love the metaphors, and Avusblues experience.
We're brought up to consume. Where consumption and accumulation are "sold" to us from birth. A full watch box signifies "variety is the spice of life". Then very act of consumption is also a learning experience, an intellectual endeavour. "I am learning about this watch". Its not, we're being Gollums.
I think I'm with you. That's all BS, and your Watch Potency Principle neatly encapsulates it.
    Best yet.

Its a treadmill. You are either on it or you are not. Potency aside and other principles, the only way to happiness I have found is an enforced state of abstinence. I took a year out and was very happy after the 1st month of torment, then about a year later a stressful event occured and I bought 5 watches in the space of 2 weeks, then I sold them off, mostly. I have realised that this spin cycle appears every once in a while. Essentially I am using watches to manage my mental health during difficult times. Not sure if this is healthy or not, but it seems to work for me, if a little expensive.

Greetings, Interesting video and philosophy. I m writing from EU and I remember very well how my grandpa have a watch but the thing is he have it for over 30 years! One watch for 30 years. And I thought that back in 50s,60s,70s,80s not many people collected watches like now they just wear what they can buy for a long time. So that really hit my 14 watch collection, and now I m left with 3 watches. Never was more easy even thinking to downsize to 2.

I think collecting watches for me is like bicycles. I rode bicycles (road racing) as a teenager growing up in California, then got back into cycling especially in my 50s, at which point I was buying and selling bikes until I reached a point of equilibrium. Now I’m happy with my bikes and don’t feel the need for more. I think it’s the same with watches. Each of my bikes serves a specific function, although of course nobody needs a bunch of bikes. It’s the same with watches.

I, too, have witnessed the potency principle in my own watch collecting experience. I’m at 4 total and feel that adding more would dilute my individual relationship with each one.

Outstanding, well done all contributing. We are beginning to understand the psychology of watch collecting. I thought I just glimpsed a light at the end of the tunnel.

There’s a potential moderating variable to the potency principal theory. This moderator is commitment. Commitment is needed for potency to fully attach. Thus, serial flippers do not benefit from potency even though they may always keep small collections. For a proper ROI in terms of cost-per-wear equity, the obsessive must own the watch for a significant period of time and with the intent to own rather than rent.

This is a valuable principle to be conscious of… it could even lead to greater appreciate of what we currently have, opposed to constantly seeking out the next purchase. Great insight - thanks

On the contrary, McMahon. I never get tired, bored, or “not excited” of any of my watches- specifically because I DO NOT use them more than a day a time. I can’t overuse any of them, and I get a rush whenever I put any of them.

    • @JeffreyMcMahon

You're not alone. Some do indeed enjoy that method. Some try but cannot rotate that many however.

I apologise, but the WPP is a mental construction: it is the individual who determines the potency or value for oneself that the watches have or don't have. So, yes, you can uri geller your way out of that self-created mind cul-de-sac and augment the potency of your watch collection with one new addition instead of dilluting it by division among one more item. You decide what it is going to be. I choose augmentation. I would ask, if I may, why would anyone choose dillution?

Regarding the watch potency principle: I have never been more invested in a watch than when I have had only one. It is the ultimate state of being for me. Have I achieved stasis? Right now my collection stands at 2. We shall see how I feel when I loan #1 of 2 to my good friend. I will report back.

Tried to wear my Citizen Barnacle reissue today...could not wait to get home and put my SLA047 back on. I have 26 divers...from 50 bucks to 12k...but the SLA047 does it for me.
My problem is figuring out how to sell a bunch of watches. Only Social Media I am on is UA-cam. Suggestions? I even called a well known Pawn Shop in Dallas yesterday and had a good laugh on what they offered for a 2000 dollar retail watch. 50 bucks? Fuhgetaboutit.

My watch collection has a middle child syndrome. Let me explain. My everyday watch is a Pelagos 42 Blue and I love it. My beater is my G-Shock GW 200 (Digital Frogman) and it fulfills that role honorably. But my middle child is my Seiko SBBN051. A beautiful watch but without a role or “purpose”. It could be an amazing everyday piece, but I love my Pelagos. It could take on some of the Frogman’s “tough” job, but I love the Frogman. I still love my Seiko, but I end up never giving it the attention it rightly deserves. I could put it on a schedule to give it wrist time over my Pelagos, but it would know it was a second choice. It is suffering from middle child syndrome.

Hard to enjoy movies for the same reason. We have an unprecedented access to entertainment yet i find myself unengaged. Unlike back in the day, when we had our weekly blockbuster trip and we had to watch and re-watch the same movie multiple times to get the most out of it. Access & Scarcity: a curse and blessing all at the same time.

I can say that having a couple of "heavy hitters" in the watch box did curb indiscriminate watch buying! I'm MUCH more selective now!
I'd say if you're selling off a Sub to get something else, (for example). Then maybe watches aren't your issue. You're most likely using watches as a copping mechanism.

  • @watchchimp3102
    @watchchimp3102 25 днів тому +1

Too many watches! No doubt, but the good thing is, if you get to the point you forget all the watches you have.
I'll go to the watch box to get a certain watch only to see something else.
Put, that watch on and typically my response is "oh, WOW!!, I Forgot how awesome this watch was"
It's almost like getting a new watch, except it's already paid for!! 😂
