    Thank you Brian for all of these posts. Because of your posts, I ended up with an MBC (which I originally thought was an MBF, but the lady's story that I bought it from, along with her wish that I preserve it and take good care of it because it was her father's, convinced me to make it part of my shop) and a 925. Restored the MBC, just like you did with the MBF (except for the whole frankenstein motor on it, lol) and the 925 is my winter project. Like you have adequately said, these saws are one of a kind and with care will last longer than most saws available now. Thanks again for all your wisdom.

    My father built multiple homes with his MBF, from frame in, finish carpentry, and cabinets. It's what I learned how to cut on, sorry that it was sold off but has been replaced with a 10 in. Craftsman. Still have a soft spot for the MBF. Thanks for showing them off.

    These machines should not only be saved and restored, they should be used. One radial arm saw can replace both a cabinet saw and a chop saw. If you know how to use a radial arm saw, it can perform rip cuts just as well, and more safely, than a table saw. The biggest advantage for a small shop is that the radial arm saw doesn't have to occupy the center of the shop: It can be up against a wall.
    Nice saws. Great video.

    • @Ritalie
      @Ritalie Рік тому +1

      The weight is a main conundrum. I bought a 1.5 horspower 1969 Dewalt labeled "Black and Decker." It's a model 1500 with a slightly different model number for the Black and Decker version, same as the model 790. I had to take it apart to get it home, and I can barely, barely move the cast iron arm by myself. I really want to get a 1030, but I feel like there's probably no way to move it.

    • @brianweekley5700

      @@Ritalie The 790 and 1030 both have cast iron arms. The weights between the two saws are very similar (208 lbs for a 790 and about 215 lbs for a 1030).

In thirty five years in manufacturing I've only had two fingers on the same hand lost. It wasn't on a saw it was a press and the employee wasn't using his pull outs .I have a very good no loss record with OSHA , but I got lucky last time. Most times I don't have the blade guide on the band saw all the way down after use. This time I did and he smiled and said " Nine times out of ten the blade is exposed " I said " Oh yes we always leave it that way 🙄. I almost lost my finger twice on a band saw. Butchers favorite 😜❗

      The "Original Saw Company" acquired the rights from DeWalt and now manufacture radial arm saws. However, they don't make the small saws--just larger industrial sizes (and they are very pricey). Luckily, there are still many used ones around for sale.

    Dear sir,
    I wonder how may of us dyed-in-the-wool RAS users are left. I have had a basement shop configuration for over 25 years that hasn't allowed a table saw as an option. But the RAS works. You can tuck them between main beams. I love my 1973 Sears RAS. I would never sell nor trade it for anything. You can't do everything promised by 50s marketing, but a vintage RAS is a lovely tool that can do a lot of things safely and elegantly.

    • @brianweekley5700
      @brianweekley5700  Рік тому

      Thank you. The RAS is an extremely compact and versatile machine! I think the RAS fell out of favor because it attained a bad reputation as a dangerous tool. Some of that may be justified, but mostly unfairly due to user incompetence (wrong technique, using wrong blade, not setup correctly, etc.). The RAS does require appropriate training to use correctly and safely. It’s certainly not for everyone. However, when operated properly, I believe it is a wonderful machine and no more dangerous than many other tools.

      Thanks. There are many excellent models. For the 10” size, the GWI and 1030 are desired. For a 12” saw, the 790/7790 is a powerful saw with a 5/8” arbor. • @brianweekley5700
      @brianweekley5700  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks, Dale! The 1030 replaced the GWI. The main difference is the motor. The GWI had a Frame 196 motor that was built more like the Frame 156 motor on the MBF (not the newer, TEFC design and I don't think it had a blade brake either). My understanding is that the TEFC motor runs cooler and is a more efficient design. Both the Frame 196 and 245 were able to be run on 120 or 240V. Some say the Frame 245 on the 1030 is one of the best made. My understanding is that the early 1030s were made with round arms leftover from the GWIs. So, the 925 and 1030 square arms (with the newer TEFC motors) were really replacing the MBF and GWI round arms (with the older motors). The 1030s made with the leftover GWI round arms are more rare to find.

      I highly recommend buying “How to Master the Radial Arm Saw” by Wally Kunkel. You’ll easily find the website if you search for that (still run by his daughter). It will show you most everything you need to know and worth the price. In addition, join the “DeWalt Radial Arm Saw Forum”. It’s a great resource for information and to get answers to any questions. Unfortunately, the MBC has one of the smallest motors DeWalt made. It’s underpowered, but is still a capable machine for 1x wood projects. The blade you want is the Freud LU83R008. It’s a thin kerf blade, 8” in diameter-both desirable features for the 1/2 hp motor. This is the only blade I would recommend for that saw (excellent in all modes-crosscut, bevel, miter, and rip).

    Brian, How to take slack out of column height adjustment ??

    • @brianweekley5700
      @brianweekley5700  Рік тому

      First, make sure the screws that hold the arm to the column are tight. Next, check if you have movement in the column at the base. There are some gib screws. Note that if you screw the gib screws in, they spread the base clamp (making the column clamp more loose. If you let them out, the clamp gets tighter. It's a trial and error process. You want the column clamp to be as tight as possible to prevent movement, but loose enough you can still raise/lower the column easily.

    You know something. Nobody likes hard angles and sharp edges. Nobody. As far as I can tell, every man on Earth loves the round arm Dewalt saws, and they buy them for no reason at all, because they are "rounded." The newer saws are better in every way, but the square wedge shape on the newer saws is not beautiful. Which then begs the question, why do car companies still not understand this principle? The new Cybertruck? All the new motorcycles with their triangular shaped plastic, which they've been building since the late 2000's. I am perplexed that some engineers still don't understand, after 75 years of study and development, that people like round shapes, NOT squares and triangles. I just wish they would make all products to look like the MBF Dewalt saws, or the Ducati 916 again.
