I was a part of this, from Bob taking delve to the demise. The evil atuk and it's comrates were finally defeated. It was also the end for my game, as I enjoyed fighting against the evil Bob empire. The game simply became less fun after they fell. I enjoyed having such a skilled and powerful evil enemy.
Epic, genius strategy with Titan shipyard lol. It’s the best of EVE. Great story, really, I loved to hear, and I didn’t know the story... it’s wow ! ❤️
for the record the nerf that got shrikes (1st) titan killed was that they removed the ability of Titans to remote doomsday, before that you didn't even have to expose the things to direct combat to nuke fleets with them. They'd always been able to be tackled by dictors it's just that none of them were ever exposed to actual danger before that point.
@ Andrew Groen, I was one of the BOB Fleet Commanders during the war activities you're discussing at the 23:00 mark and beyond through to March of 2008. If you're still looking for first hand information, send me a message and I can provide some of the very significant background information you're missing.
I was active in Goonfleet from 2006 to 2010 and was a sometime fleet commander with decent insight into planning and strategy during the Great War, although not part of the inner circle of directors. This video simplifies a lot of things for obvious reasons (it would be 10 hours long if it didn't) but one major thing it misrepresents is why exactly BoB and Goons originally became enemies. It had nothing to do with the T20 scandal (although that certainly fueled a lot of hatred towards BoB and was heavily exploited in our propaganda), but rather was originally caused by personal drama on the Eve Online forums.
37:16 This moment rather forcefully reminded me of when Persia invaded Sparta. Philip sent a message to the Spartans saying “If I invade Lakonia you will be destroyed, never to rise again.” The Spartans replied with one word, “If.”
"this is the most expensive loss in Eve online history" and the developers laugh all the way to bank as these fleets need to be funded to rebuild 😀 this is one time I truly enjoy seeing the devs make bank like this. Mostly because nearly everyone enjoyed their time losing their shit in an awesome timeline of battles
Such fun to listen to his stories but actually the first titan killed in EvE was from ASCN. They‘ve build the first one and were the first alliance to lose one. Actually they lost it to BoB.
No shit, a well know player event and CCP should have been on top of it the day it was happening making sure the server was ready for the large influx. I wouldn't be surprised if they took a hit in subscriptions from people saying "fuck this game"
The amazing thing about the EVE community is that we knew that CCP was limited in what they can do, and they constantly told us that they were buying more and more server clusters as money permitted, and *pleading* with us to let them know weeks in advance of fights so they could shift the constellation the fight would be on to as many clusters as they could to allow us to fight. Crashes still happen, but very infrequently. Their servers are much better than they used to be, and they've put in server capabilities that slow the game down to allow the server to process 3000 people sending commands at the same time. "Time Dilation" is what the mechanic is called.
You have to bear in mind that there was a hard technological limitation back then. This was over 10 full years ago, a LOT has changed since then, blackberries were brand new, halo 2 was in it's prime, and people saw the outside of their house more often than not. The eve servers then were probably some of the most powerful computers in the world and I wouldn't be remotely surprised if your average modern desktop would make them look like a commodore 64. We accepted lag and disconnects then in much the same way modern players bear with tidi, because the game is worth it.
This is a big reason why Lotka Volterra noped out. Did everything to prepare for the JV1V battle, including taking into account server failures, still got fucked over. Still, the time before and around that battle was fun, i spent hours drawing goonswarm stragglers into a warp bubble past the gate they wanted to take.
Oh god, it almost feels unfair how when the server crashed that the first one to log in could just destroy the opponent like that. Like I would as a developer maybe think about going in and doing something there.
At 29:13 I'm assuming someone working for the company made it reset and that's why they had part of their fleet logged off because they knew it was going to happen. With the Eve currency trading for real currency and the massive amounts of real world money that could be made playing the game, it wouldn't be a stretch of the imagination for someone to pay an underpaid tech industry employee to do something like that.
I remember the war well, we worked with LV and MC as logistics supports as the fleets took down POS structures we would ninja into the system with our own POS towers and put them up, usually expensive True Sansha large faction towers with as many shields and guna as we could fit which we used to nick name death stars as they were there only temporarily with the only aim of destroying anything that came near while the sovereignty counter ticks over, then we would ninja them out of the system and put them up again in the next front line system. Some great times were had, great fights great stories...I played from early beta 2002/3 until around 2015 when life, and family took over and I do miss it sometimes.

That's rubbish, titans were still incredibly powerful and useful and in fact had to be nerfed again only about a year later once it became obvious how game-breaking multiple Titans working in concert were. Before the first nerf it was impossible to kill a Titan as long as the player was logged in, since there was no way to prevent it from eventually warping away or leaving the system. The nerf made it possible for certain ships to disable its jump drive, but only as long as those ships were still alive - so a Titan escorted by a strong fleet of smaller ships was still almost impossible to kill. What happened in 46DP was just that Sir Molle got cocky and used his Titan with only a small friendly fleet nearby, and even then he only got caught because one single Goon pilot got incredibly lucky and managed to de-cloak him just before he could escape. If BoB had had a proper escort fleet in the system, that Titan would never have died.
