Note professor comes with a phd and years of consistent publication. It’s not actually the hours it’s the consistent research.

Its time South Africa universities recruit the best black South African graduates to be junior lectures and groom them to be senior lectures to professors, than recruiting foreigners, enrol them for masters degrees in research, giving them stipends and paying their full intuition while groom them to be lectures and professors over our local best graduates!

It is already happening, there is the National Research Foundation's (NRF) Black Academics Advancement Programme (BAAP) and also their New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) that does what you are talking about. The caveat is that you need to complete your Masters and pass with at least 70% to be eligible for the nGAP programme and for the BAAP programme you must already hold a position as a lecturer in a public university.

Flash life style is an illusion that many people are having especially the social media kids, who are always fantasies about a good life but they do nothing with their life, they seat the whole day watching social media
I am in HR and I would highly recommend that when you receive the offer, consider requesting a dummy payslip to understand deductions and benefits. It's also a good idea to set up a call with their HR or the person who sent you the offer to discuss the structure, ensuring clarity on your net pay before accepting. Many companies are open to accommodate these requests. Don't accept without a dummy payslip. Every company should send you one.

On the question of hours per week, there are no fixed hours. When I was lecturing, basically, I was at the office from 07h00 to 16h00, but I would also work at night. You also have to supervise students, mark assignments and scripts, write papers for publication, attend training seminars, proposal defences, research dissemination, attend academic conferences, etc. If you are a professor, you also supervise masters and PhD students and be engaged in university administration.
Mmmm, that's long hours! It's quite a demanding journey, but I'm sure fulfilling.
Same here ,8am - 4pm but not teaching all some days just 1 class some days which is 1h30m at most 4 classes which is 6 hrs
@@user-mj7ee2vk6i I taught a class of undergraduate and postgraduate students. It was three days a week, but for postgraduate students it was one class per week. The class for Honours level took two hours and I have to ensure that I teach a lot in two hours.

Professors dont paid based hours becuase there is more than just 9-5, Professors write articles, supervise postgraduate students and some lecture in addition to that, but people need to know that ,a life of a professor is 95% research and 5 % lecturing compared to a lecturer who will cry about workload and only teaching 2 times a week which is 19 hour per week..

@@liferesetwithbonihi Sisi Boni. I believe the terms are interchangeable “dummy or mock payslip”. Also, I believe besides asking for a dummy payslip, the gentleman in the email may be speaking from the point of knowing what amount you want and negotiate saying that you want, for example, 20k nett.
Honestly Bonnie, the first 3 payslips are at Junior Lecturer level. Also, the higher your degree, the more you get. Masters and PhD earns you a lot more. Additionally, Professors at my University, on average, earn more than the Prof. does, even though he does earn well. I guess it does come down to negotiating as well, how many students you’ve graduated & other activities you’re engaged in.

The highest salary a proff gets is a R1.2 million per annum. Freestate university chemistry prof. The advantage is that you get to estimate your value when you're too valuable to lose

Not true. R1.2 mil is for Associate Professors. Profs are different: Research Profs tend to earn more than Teaching Profs. the more money you bring the more you can negotiate.

Well, the professor is also the director of a school in this regard, hence the extra R17000. So, he has extra managerial work as he may be supervising different departments. As such, he should be having very few hours of resting. Nevertheless, he is well compensated for such extras.

The amount of work in academia is not measured in hours. The time is not a factor of productivity. I am a senior lecturer in biology, so sometimes I go to the laboratory at 2 am during a weekend and spend 2 hrs. Sometimes I travel with students to collect samples for a week. I spend time reading articles and thesis outside office hours because I still have to prepare and do lectures during the office hours, carry administrative duties, raise research funds, engage with community through weekend consultations, seek collaborations, and write my own articles and book chapters.
so, R1.2 millon is not even adequate for a Senior Lecturer since we work all the time. Professors should be paid at least R2 million annually

for that 10K payslip, if I can ask is that person a South African? majority of Zim professionals who fled their country(without proper docs) are exploited here more especially by private schools/colleges. Most private schools don't pay good salaries because they don't have resources, they don't even hire professional teachers some earn R4K/2.5k.

How do you calculate nett pay? They do give you a rough idea of what your nett pay will be when they send you the appointment letter.

Insurance is tricky because there is a point in your career where you can make money based on experience but you reach a cap if your papers aren’t enough to climb ladder

Research and Publications are extra things professors, lecturers and research fellows do to enchance their career, and the name of the university as well as it's research output

If you are in an academic environment and you're lazy to further study and write articles then you are in the wrong place, remember lecturing is just 5% of being an academic and 95% is research....and if you can't do that then you're in the wrong place...

sorry to disappoint you. that prof must be in a clinical position, i.e. first studied medicine or dentistry. Non-clinical profs do not earn that much, but they are still working as much as clinical profs. Google Cost of employment (COE) ranges and costing information for permanent academic staff (2023) to see salary scales at UCT for a non-clinical prof. UCT pays the most, so profs at other SA universities earn much less, yet they must do the same amount of work
