- ❤❤❤ The story is set in the 1930s, reflecting on the original Max Fleischer style of animation. Betty works as a waitress in a diner with her friends Bimbo the musical dog and Koko the Clown. Betty and her friends entertain the customers with a Hawaiian hula revue, the trio are seen entertaining the customers by Diner Dan who owns the diner, he gets very angry and fires Betty and her friends. While searching for a new job they bump into detective Sam Slade, who hires Betty and her pals to go undercover for him as musical detectives to keep an eye on Hollywood movie star Lola DaVille's diamond necklace. The lights go out and Lola's necklace is stolen. Betty is left holding the smoke gun, the police arrest Betty, and she is carted off to jail. Bimbo and Koko break Betty out of jail, then head over to Moolah Studios where they find out that Lola's secretary, Miss Green, was behind the robbery, and that her accomplice was the detective Sam Slade. The pursuit ends on a Busby Berkeley set, Lola DaVille receives her diamond necklace and Sam Slade and Miss Green are both arrested by the police. A singing telegram from Betty's old boss, Diner Dan, pleads Betty and her friends to return to the diner, to which Betty agrees. Betty then finishes the story by singing "You don't have to be star to be star," and says the best place to be is with your friends.

If Betty Boop ever got a reboot, I would want it to be like this. There's something so charming about this film. The trio is so sweet and unique. I definitely want to see more of these three getting into shenanigans and singing their way through.

I think she is because I bought a velvet caviar collaborative case with Betty Boop. Velvet caviar is a small business so the fact that she is starting to collaborate with brands to make products means that she may make a comeback. I nearly died when velvet caviar collaborated with her. She is if they’re making quality products with her
I'm of two minds. Part of me thinks that Betty should always be pre-War, and stay in the time which suits her best. She has the brains and the moxie to live in the 21st century, but I wouldn't want to inflict it on her.
For a special made in 1989, this has a real 1970s underground comix/Mickey and the Air Pirates vibe behind the wholesome 1930s Fleischer facade.
I mean pre-code Flesicher was never ever wholesome.

Betty Boop is still to this day one of the greatest cartoon stars.
BETTY BOOP set the standard for women in cartoons . Just like Lucille Ball set the standard for women in television and comedy. I don't think any cartoon lady can hold a candle to BETTY BOOP.. BETTY BOOP is CUTE , FOXY , and BEAUTIFUL.
Despite how iconic she is, I think most people nowadays have seen more Betty Boop-merchandise than actual Betty Boop-cartoons.

I think the main problem why people think this is bad is because they talk too much. Original Betty Boop had some talkings but the main focus was the music and visual humor.
Despite the negative comments below, I think it was an ambitious project to create something like this, using full animation instead of doing something with all that CGI that you see nowadays... They even kept the Fleischer style with all of the gadgets and things moving...I've always admired that style...
This was made in 1989, CGI was still in a primitive state by then.
I like Betty's purple dress more than her red dress. I think it fits her character more.

I've seen LOTS Of older Betty cartoons but I don't think this one was terrible, sure things are different but I got used to it pretty quickly. Even the voice of Betty. to me, it still sounds similar to the older new york accent she had.
Agree. I enjoyed it, I think they tried to stay true to the original animators but no 2 artists can duplicate another’s work. Betty would find lots to sing and dance about
today, her innocent mischievous soul would be welcome in these sometimes scary times.

The strange thing is, although everybody doesn't really like this, it is really nostalgic for me to see this. You can say this is really bad, but it is really interesting and kind of funny how they take this movie and use it in a certain way.
This film is one of those things that’s nostalgic even when it’s new.
I would love it if these three characters made a comeback in this style. No Betty Boop since 1989, unbelievable.

have one good answer for why bimbo is because back in the 1930s the animators couldn't get the colors right because everything was in black and white at that time so when you think about it, that is a good explanation is blue even though he is supposed to be blue in the Black and White cartoons but you know black and white is only for like 19 thirties in the 1930s television show of the cartoons of the classic years I couldn't see color at that time for one thing around had to use black and white just to get the money to start flowing so if you ever want to make a video first started off in black and white Everett trying to do it all TV show a time machine and go way back to 1930 you got yourself a black and white movie or TV show

As much as I love Melissa Fahn, her voice acting didn't really do any justice to voice for Betty. She just didn't have that Betty Boop charm to her voice, compared to the original voice actor. I get they tried to remake and capture the way Max Fleischer did his cartoons, but it just didn't cut it. To be fair, if they took their time, studied more of Max's animation style, come up with a more interesting storyline, and decent songs written for Betty to sing would probably would have been a better outcome for the film.

Since this was released in 1989, not only have I watched Betty Boop's Hollywood Mystery on UA-cam in honor of the animated special's 35th anniversary this year, but I watched the entirety of this animated special on UA-cam for the first time ever!
In 1993 a Betty Boop movie was almost going to happen. I would love if they resurrected that project and did it, especially since nowadays there's a rising popularity towards '30s animation era thanks to games like Bendy and Cuphead.
Until that day comes along, this cartoon will do.

This isn’t perfect but honestly…..I love this cartoon! Yeah the animation isn’t the greatest but I love everything about this! If only they made a whole tv show like this back when it first released!

When the HAYES CODE made BETTY BOOP more modest. The HAYES CODE couldn't allow BETTY BOOP to be SEXY anymore . The HAYES CODE thought BETTY BOOP was too HOT for younger audiences.

This is probably the best episode that has been made ever since Betty Boop's first appearance.My favorite song that has been added in this episode is the one at the end.It has such a great meening,and teaches kids alot.

The animation for something made in 89 is sloppy and the voice acting is subpar, yes… But such a step up from the "Romance of Betty Boop" in terms of animation, cartoonyness, story, also bringing back Bimbo and Koko instead of having Fearless Fred.
If this was made in the earlier 80's or late 70's I think it would be better received maybe. It's pretty cute still.

I adore Koko and Bimbo, I’m glad to see them in this too. Koko in particular, ever since watching his Cab Calloway song bit from Snow White. Although, I wouldn’t have minded Freddy being in the mix too, I always thought his “heroic stunts” were funny in how over the top and time-consuming they were - occasionally it made for great comedic timing.

Love the coloring style of this so vibrant yet subtle.
When I was young, I had taped The Romance of Betty Boop and watched it all the time until it accidentally got erased. I didn't even know this existed until recently. The two cartoons couldn't be more different. I found this one to be almost unwatchable. That makes me sad, since I was really looking forward to it.

KoKo the clown started out in silent cartoons back in the early 1920s.
my problems with this:
-im not a HUGE fan of Betty Boop's voice in this. It doesn't fit her, but its still a nice voice.
-I can only see Bimbo being black. he doesn't look right as a blue dog.
-I REALLY don't like Bimbo's voice, its too deep. His voice in the 1930's cartoons is much better.
-I actually think KOKO should be in color, not Bimbo. I can't see Koko staying black and white.
-Why is Koko completely mute? (I mean, im only up to 5:42, so he might talk later on).

Bimbo actually had a deep voice but there were usually voice cracks that follow up. Koko is made out of ink so him being black and white makes sense. I agree with the rest though.

I love Fahn's voice acting in general, but I feel like you can tell it's her first role when you hear her here. It's not bad, but she does miss the high-pitched spunk that made Betty Boop so iconic. I don't why they didn't get Desirée Goyette to reprise her role considering the Romance of Betty Boop wasn't made too far apart.
Oh I lived the original voice actor... God rest her soul but this new voice actor doesn't have that same pep but they need to bring Betty Boop back! She never had many episodes in color....:(

I see how bimbo is blue, just like it is possible from nature for a dog to have deep blue fur and Koko the clown is all in black, like he just came straight from a funeral, while clowns usually have colorful outfits. And Betty Boop has a purple dress? Red suits her much better.
I mean, they all have at last ONE color cartoon and Bimbo and Betty dont even appear in the right colors, meanwhile Koko has no color at all, making him look more like a mime, rather than a clown. Poor Koko.
Too bad those characters appeared in film way before Technicolor was widely available, maybe if they had appeared in color before, they wouldnt look so ridiculous in this cartoon. Or waybe the animators were simply color blind and had no aesthetic sense.
