Are there any golfers who don't have as much hip depth yet hit the ball solidly? I believe you did one of these videos on Annika several years ago. She definitely comes off the butt line (slight early extension). And she's definitely one of the best ball strikers ever, man or woman. Is this correct?

I was going to ask this. It’s only a great move if it’s universal. The gold swing is dynamic and there’s many ways to swing a golf club but probably only a few things most great ball strikers do.

Wayne, is there a correct way to initiate and sequence the hip movement in the downswing? Do you push off your back foot or is it more of a pulling motion with the front leg/hip? Elkington has described moving his left knee toward the target and there’s an old video of Foley working with Sean O’hair on a similar type of move. Tommy Fleetwood says he moves his left hip “straight back” (away from the ball) essentially clearing his hips out of the way. Any thoughts?

Pressure changes from centered on the feet to heavier right (70% or so) in the backswing. At impact with an iron 80 to 90 % of the pressure is on the left foot. To move mass you need a force. The initial movement to get from the right foot to the left has to start from the ground under the right foot. The direction of force is away from the target against a braced right foot and leg which propels the pelvis toward the target with additional torque (rotation) added to the force, which causes the pelvis to move in a diagonal fashion toward the left heel and has the left side of the pelvis rotating almost immediately while sliding forward. What Fleetwood is describing is the way it feels to him. If he actually pulled his left hip straight back while being 70% on his right side he would simply spin out with little pressure ever getting under his left foot. He has a built in movement from right to left which he takes for granted, and thus can honestly claim that he is pulling his left hip straight back to begin his forward swing. Ben Hogan had the same sequence where he moved his pelvis toward the target early in the backswing, then spent most of the time in his book talking about the clearing of the left hip. This has ruined many trying to follow "The Five Lessons".

Thank you Wayne, this is very helpful! I’ve read many books, watched countless swing videos, and had lessons with various instructors and I feel two areas of the swing that really lack attention are proper weight/pressure shift and proper release of the club. Harmon and Haney have both used the term “hip bump” to initiate the downswing but give little explanation how to incorporate that move properly. I used to unwind my hips from the top causing the path to steepen slightly on the downswing and my hands flip at impact from lagging behind. I’ve been working on incorporating more of a lateral weight shift before rotating, but need to figure out the proper sequence. I also started playing when the modern golf swing evolved into minimal hip turn with a wide shoulder turn on the backswing, which could be causing me issues as well. Thanks again!

I watch the players' heads -- and almost always they are perfectly still. It disturbed me to see how Tiger Woods sorta lurched at the ball... but I could not argue with his success.

Wayne, I look forward to your videos explaining how to work on this in practice and how to think about this move on the golf course, especially since I struggle with what parts of the move I should "make" happen and what parts I should "let" happen. Or, to put another way, how to "trick" my body into this move while simplifying my swing feels/thoughts.

Great vid as always, and thanks for answering questions in the comments. Would love to see a swing analysis of Micheal Kim. He seems to be incorporating less wrist hinge ala Steve Stricker, even on pitch shots, I think it would be interesting to hear our thoughts on his swing and mainly wrist conditions.
