I am a JKD practitioner and built a similar device based on one Bruce Lee had. They are amazing for isometric strength development. In addition to what is given in this video, you can see Lee’s original program from his notes in “The Art of Expressing the Human Body”.
$ 500 for the commercial Iso-Chain exerciser is a real heart stopper. Thank God there are people like you who take the time and effort to show us how to save money and still have a fully functional exerciser. Thanks. Let's see, 1,800 Thumbs Up X $ 400 savings = $ 720,000 you've saved folks and it's probably even more than that. That should get you some rewards in the next life.
True, but they allow you to split the payment through PayPal over 3-4 months or you can use a low interest credit card. It is well worth the cost but the DIY one will definitely do for many. In my opinion the real game changer is the spring. Such a simple addition changes everything!
@@shawnclem This is my 3rd or 4th video I've watched of his content. @@bobjamer8956 Me too. Agree. Subbed some time ago. Of all the "get fit" videos, I seem to enjoy these the most - because of Hampton himself and his straight forward, no nonsense, keep it simple, practical style. Without any ads to pay for something.... He is doing so good work for the common good, which I highly appreciate.
We use to make and use these back in the 1960's lot of guys got strong fast great for power workouts. It was a device used by strongmen like Sandow, Cyrus and many others in years gone by. Remember grasshopper.... The most important thing about living a long life is..... your still enjoying at the end! God keep you.
The way all these restrictions are going on people should really take this advice and really think that this is how we will be getting our work out Ingenuity and innovation and of course persistence
Cool. Another option for the handle: Take an EZ curl bar, attach a short climbing sling in the middle. I find the shape more wrist friendly, and it is also very comfy for Zercher style holds (holding in the crook of the elbow). Chains are rather noisy and expensive. Tie-down straps with a cam lock (for securing loads) probably won't last forever, but adjust easily and are cheap.
I'm glad I checked out your video because I decided to build one of these after 56 years. Your base is more solid than I was thinking about, I'm going to use your base design > If you look at the old picture of Bruce using one of these I believe the Carabiner clip just slips over your pipe, well that's what it looks like to me by studying the picture.
One thing you could add to this is a crane scale. It'll show you how much you're pulling isometrically and show strength increases. Also helps to train within certain % ratios
Yeah I've tried that! It works well but usually doesn't record the maximum force, so I need a video recording or something to keep track of what I was doing.
I saw some inline scales on Amazon. I imagine some deep sea fish weighing scales might record maximum. Of course we want to keep this project cheap to make.
I just made an Isomax-like static training device, based on Hampton's videos. I needed one each 10 foot long, 2x4 board from Home Depot, drill, screwdriver, screws, one ring dip strap (sold in pairs on Amazon for < $30), one repurposed cable training machine bar ($10 on Facebook Marketplace) and one o-ring carabiner that I've had for years. Caution...2x4 wood is actually ~ 1 3/8 x 3 3/8 in size. Measure carefully before cutting. Home Depot cut my 2x4 board as part of the purchase cost.
Can't send pic but I made mine with a shoulder width wide piece of strut ( construction materials), three keychain type spring loaded links and Paracord with loop knots every 16". The cord has a little stretch so I ease up to full power in 4 seconds and am now doing 6 sets of 6 second full power holds. The isochain may be wonderful for some folks but all it takes for this is " all you got!"
Great video!! I would suggest lake the same device but with two chains and two spring. One un each side. That would vive more diversity of exercises, like back squat and bench press
Hey, love the channel and the video. I would love to see a video on you making your pull up bar station outside. I want to build one of my own and just want your input on how you did yours.
Hi Hampton, Great Video! Next time would you p l e a s e wear safety glasses when drilling..... We'd to keep you around with good eyesight... :) Best, John R. PS - please consider shoes vs sandals when drilling too.... :)
Check out the Isochain Isomax Pre-order. That looks even easier to do a DIY of. I bet there are many ready-made boards that will do. For the rest you can use a vulken strap and a Lat pull-down handle.
Looks great. I like the spring component (years ago I used to use my toddlers' bouncy swing mechanism as an isometric device!). I have seen 2 chain variants with individual handles (so you can work one arm at a time). Just one thing: I would think one of those big screw-in eye hooks would be more than adequate..rather than a bolt, though?
Love the videos.. actually accidentally ran across them on iFunny of all places but really liked the content and figured I'd drop a comment and subscribe.. thanks for the vids..
I just noticed - isn't the base made from 2" x 12" lumber planks instead of that 1 inch you posted? Now 2" in lumber is really only 1.5" nowadays. It used to be a full 2" long, long ago in the Before Times. So, actually, someone building this exerciser will need a 2" x 12" x 8' (2 inch thick x 12 inch wide x 8 feet long). The real dimensions would be 1.5" thick x 11.25" wide x 8' long.
Good video. My only questions are whether the bar could have a dual chain design to accommodate squat and bench press. Also do you think doing these isometrics alone can translate into strength on movements such as bench press and squats using free weights?
You can put 3 chains, 2 on the sides and 1 in the center, that way you can squat and press. They are more parts and price goes up, but I'm thinking of doing it.
Hampton, just curious what was the price tag on this? I'm looking at roughly $80 and its probably a better idea to make 3 than one for me lol 😆 if I can find chain cheap enough
Good stuff, bro. I have recently discovered the isochain that another youtuber promotes. He has a great channel but the device is 500 dollars, a little too steep a price for me at the moment. I think I will make this in the meantime until I can afford it. Do you think you can attach some sort of dynamometer to this to measure your progress? And do you have a set of exercises to perform on these? Thanks for your content.
You can get a small hanging scale on Amazon that will read up to 600 lbs. My set up is essentially like this with scale attached next to the bar or down by the anchor point. Gives real numbers so you can track and see your strength go up. Beats 500 clams for same thing.
Do Isometrics really strengthen your muscles? And if so which is more effective weight training or isometrics? (Googled it but too many contradictory answers.)
Weight lifting = gain more muscle isometrics = gain the ability to use more of the muscle you already have the bioneer has some good videos on it - ua-cam.com/video/RwHbWUXz98I/v-deo.html&ab_channel=TheBioneer (you may have already seen it though😊)
"More effective" is too vague. More effective for what - bodybuilding, strength building etc.? Do some Google searches about Isometric benefits and see what you find. I believe that isometrics is more for strength building as it increases muscle, tendon and ligament strength and not so much for building big, water filled bodybuilder muscles. You would look more like a Special Forces soldier rather than an Arnold Schwarzenegger or Dwayne Johnson. In other words, you would have useful, functional muscles and not just useless showy muscles.
Scrap metal yards are a good resource for material to make the handle and possibly acquire an industrial heavy duty spring. Great video. A video utilizing the device is a must!
DragonDoor.com is selling an "IsoChain" unit with electronic measurement and timing on the handle (www.dragondoor.com/store/isochain_training_preorder/). It is new and pricey but does provide the advantage of being able to determine how much force is being applied.
