Meet the Archive #4 | Reuse of Archival Films: The Materiality of Film & Film and Other Media

Eye Filmmuseum always welcomes collaborations with artists that either explore the materiality of celluloid itself or expand the boundaries of cinema. Eye invited 2 experts on this topic representing 2 different generations. Peter Delpeut who is a filmmaker famous for found footage films such as Lyrical Nitrate, Diva Dolorosa and The Forbidden Quest. Niels Gerson Lohman who is creative director producing promotional campaigns for cultural institutions such as the van Gogh museum. Together with curator Leenke Ripmeester they discuss various issues such as the fascination for the decaying image of nitrate film and the intersection between cinema and other art forms.
“Reuse of archival films: the materiality of film & film and other media - some examples” contains various examples of the last decades of how filmmakers were fascinated with the materiality of film of how they aimed at intersecting films with other forms of media. Eye Filmmuseum verwelkomt samenwerkingen met kunstenaars die de materialiteit van celluloid zelf onderzoeken, of de grenzen van film oprekken. Eye nodigde twee experts op dit gebied uit, van twee verschillende generaties: Peter Delpeut, een filmmaker bekend om films met gevonden beelden als Lyrical Nitrate, Diva Dolorosa en The Forbidden Quest; en Niels Gerson Lohman, een creatief directeur die promotiecampagnes maakt voor culturele instellingen, waaronder het Van Gogh museum. Samen met curator Leenke Ripmeester bespreken ze onderwerpen als hun fascinatie voor de vergankelijkheid van nitraatfilms, en de grensvlakken tussen film en andere kunstvormen.
“Reuse of archival films: the materiality of film & film and other media - some examples” geeft voorbeelden uit de afgelopen decennia van filmmakers die gefascineerd waren door de materialiteit van film, of die film met andere vormen van media vermengden. Door het gebruik van archiefmateriaal voor deze doelen aan te moedigen, stimuleert Eye voortdurend het onderzoek naar de betekenis van film.
De film Liquidator is een artistiek onderzoek naar het verval van nitraat. Deze film zal worden geïntroduceerd door de regisseur, Karel Doing.
