It really was wierd, but I'm not sure how to solve it. In order to do this properly you somehow need to determine how a player is 'rated', and than compare your own view of them and see if there's a big discrepancy. The problem is that the first part is impossible, especially since the loudest voices on the internet rarely represent the opinions of the larger (and saner) fanbase.
East solution. Just make a parameter of who the rating is based on. Whether the talking heads of the top media groups, popular UA-camrs, the voters, other NBA Players, the management, or even just the others on his podcast. Cause trying to do all of those into one general “rating” is truly impossible. Even then that would be basically impossible but at least it would be more consistent.

Lu Dort averaged 11 a game on almost 40% from 3 last season which is what you want from a 3&D player. And several players have said Lu Dort is one of the best perimeter defenders in the league.
However, I have seen many people point out that Dort gets away with a lot of tactics. Also, I don't believe that he's as good of a shooter as a number of people claim. He needs to attack the rim more.

Jeremy Sochan is one of the best 1on1 defenders in the league statistically. His progress with shooting from year 1 to year 2 is also very very good. The efficiency isnt with him yet unfortunately, but with how reportedly hard of a worker he is and also because he is a spurs player, i believe that he will be one of the biggest risers this season, especially because of how many people watch the spurs nowadays

Most UA-cam wanna-be's are infatuated with the 3pt shot. Doesn't matter how many times great shooting teams fall apart in the clutch, the only thing they care about is 5-out and having AT LEAST 4 guys on the court at all times who are 38% or better from 3. KD could play in ANY era because he's that great (and versatile). Someone like Curry would struggle in the 80s & 90s because he couldn't play defense and if he didn't get separation (needing the entire offense to be built around getting him open looks on catch and shoots), he'd be lucky to get 5 quality shots a game. Durant is the most UNDER-RATED player in the last quarter century. Career 27/7/4 @ 50/39%/87%. He doesn't do anything but give you incredible production every year and NEVER be drama that upsets the team. Not a take charge kind of guy, but put him on a team with a great player and they'd run the league (I love Booker, but I'm talking Luka/Jokic/LeBron/Giannis, etc....).

Not saying he wouldn’t of scored, but it would’ve been more difficult one on one than it is today and coaches back then didn’t let you shoot so many threes so he never would’ve had the opportunity to be putting up 10 per game. Kerr is a better three-point shooter by percentage and wasn’t allowed to put up more than three or four a game and didn’t get an entire offense built around getting him open. It’s just a completely different mindset that those guys played under and he’s not better (or significantly better) and the best playing back then. HeJust he just takes more shots than they did.

Brunson Helioball also has one point of failure. If Brunson gets injured, or his shot fails him, they'll fall apart. The Knicks NEED Randle for when they get stuck in the mud & just need a bucket. Lineup versatility has been the deciding factor in the playoffs for years now. If you can do a lot of things, you'll do well. It is not "wise" at all to put it all on Brunson alone.
I agree that that's one of the big problems of heliocentric players in general. It's not wise to put it all on one player whether they get injured or not, it's better to have a team identity that stays intact even without the star. The star is obviously very important and is the key for the team to reach the highest potential, but building a team that lives or dies with a star is dangerous.

The whole “they shouldn’t be shooting these shots because they shoot 35%” really ticks me off. Strus would shoot better if he took the normal threes most good spot ups do. Instead he’s used in their offence to fit Sam Merrill’s shot chart when he’s off the floor. League average is 37% from three. Most of those are much easier attempts than the ones strus takes. Merrill is an elite shooter, Strus is a great one.

Jimmy has had many bad games in the postseason that don't get talked about. Remember the play-in game against the Hawks in 2023? He was terrible in that game; he was smoking layups at the rim. His performance dwindled somewhat after the Bucks series, although his bad ankle played a role in that. What about when Miami went up 3-0 on the Celtics but still allowed the series to reach a Game 7? How did he play in Games 4-6? Not well. In the Finals, he was basically a non-factor. Jimmy may elevate in the postseason, but that elevation is not maintained as often as people think.
As a Knicks fan Randle is very underrated. As his teammates have gotten better his efficiency has risen due to him being given more space and better matchups without really any drop is scoring. Honestly Josh Hart may be a little overrated due to the recency bias of the playoff run and how he was shooting so much better than he usually does that people think that’s normal

12:25 what I don't understand is why real superstars like Kawhi, Embiid, AD get the pass on playing bad in the playoffs because they are clearly injured and play trough it and when players like Paul George, Jamal Murray or Khris Middleton do it, they don't. People have to decide if they ignore injuries and say: "I judge a player from what I see on the court alone" or, if they consider that an injured player can't be as good as the same player without injuries. Hot take : Joel Embiid is the best center in the NBA (if not tied with Jokic) when healthy, and a top 10 center of all time. He’s a better scorer than Jokic (better shooter, better dunker, quicker post game, and draws more fouls) He’s just as good at rebounding. He’s only one tier under Jokic in passing, but more than makes up for that by being a better defender. He gets more blocks, more steals, and protects the rim better. He’s also a better free throw shooter. Embiid is also the better athlete, and probably stronger than Jokic, especially on defense. I think Embiid being a better scorer and better defender, makes up for Jokic being a better passer, and in everything else they’re about equal. If you deduct what they’re giving up on defense from what they’re scoring, Embiid is like +10 on Jokic. He’s just been cursed the last few years with a string of injuries that never seem to stop piling up. Embiid should have an even better “what if” case than D. rose and Tmac because he proved more in his time on the court, and the only reason he doesn’t get the same respect based on his potential as players like them is because too many fans let how much they like a player influence how good they think that player is. People will rate guys higher than they should, just because they’re likeable, just like Anthony Edwards.
Embiid is multiple tiers lower as a passer Jokic is a better scorer, his efficiency makes up for his less PPG (he shoots less shots) and he’s a better 3 pt shooter, free throw % is about equal, and in the playoffs, especially last year jokic shot 46% from 3 on 4 attempts and averaged 30, Embiid has never been that efficient in the playoffs, even this year Embiid shot just 44% while averaging 33 in the playoffs

So obviously KD's midrange is good for way more than just end of period buzzer beating, but it's very possible to misuse it. In fact, I don't see any team in the NBA where the starting Center and the backup Center are that close to another when it comes to overall skill and impact. Maybe the Hawks, that's it. It really was wierd, but I'm not sure how to solve it. In order to do this properly you somehow need to determine how a player is 'rated', and than compare your own view of them and see if there's a big discrepancy. The problem is that the first part is impossible, especially since the loudest voices on the internet rarely represent the opinions of the larger (and saner) fanbase.
East solution. Just make a parameter of who the rating is based on. Whether the talking heads of the top media groups, popular UA-camrs, the voters, other NBA Players, the management, or even just the others on his podcast. Cause trying to do all of those into one general “rating” is truly impossible. Even then that would be basically impossible but at least it would be more consistent.

Jeremy Sochan is one of the best 1on1 defenders in the league statistically. His progress with shooting from year 1 to year 2 is also very very good. The efficiency isnt with him yet unfortunately, but with how reportedly hard of a worker he is and also because he is a spurs player, i believe that he will be one of the biggest risers this season, especially because of how many people watch the spurs nowadays

Doesn't matter how many times great shooting teams fall apart in the clutch, the only thing they care about is 5-out and having AT LEAST 4 guys on the court at all times who are 38% or better from 3. KD could play in ANY era because he's that great (and versatile). Someone like Curry would struggle in the 80s & 90s because he couldn't play defense and if he didn't get separation (needing the entire offense to be built around getting him open looks on catch and shoots), he'd be lucky to get 5 quality shots a game. Durant is the most UNDER-RATED player in the last quarter century. Career 27/7/4 @ 50/39%/87%. He doesn't do anything but give you incredible production every year and NEVER be drama that upsets the team. Not a take charge kind of guy, but put him on a team with a great player and they'd run the league (I love Booker, but I'm talking Luka/Jokic/LeBron/Giannis, etc....).

Kerr is a better three-point shooter by percentage and wasn’t allowed to put up more than three or four a game and didn’t get an entire offense built around getting him open.

Lineup versatility has been the deciding factor in the playoffs for years now. If you can do a lot of things, you'll do well. It is not "wise" at all to put it all on Brunson alone.

It's not wise to put it all on one player whether they get injured or not, it's better to have a team identity that stays intact even without the star. The whole “they shouldn’t be shooting these shots because they shoot 35%” really ticks me off. Strus would shoot better if he took the normal threes most good spot ups do. Instead he’s used in their offence to fit Sam Merrill’s shot chart when he’s off the floor. League average is 37% from three. Most of those are much easier attempts than the ones strus takes. Merrill is an elite shooter, Strus is a great one.

Jimmy has had many bad games in the postseason that don't get talked about. Remember the play-in game against the Hawks in 2023? He was terrible in that game; he was smoking layups at the rim. His performance dwindled somewhat after the Bucks series, although his bad ankle played a role in that. What about when Miami went up 3-0 on the Celtics but still allowed the series to reach a Game 7? How did he play in Games 4-6? Not well. In the Finals, he was basically a non-factor. Jimmy may elevate in the postseason, but that elevation is not maintained as often as people think.

As a Knicks fan Randle is very underrated. As his teammates have gotten better his efficiency has risen due to him being given more space and better matchups without really any drop is scoring. 12:25 what I don't understand is why real superstars like Kawhi, Embiid, AD get the pass on playing bad in the playoffs because they are clearly injured and play trough it and when players like Paul George, Jamal Murray or Khris Middleton do it, they don't. Hot take : Joel Embiid is the best center in the NBA (if not tied with Jokic) when healthy, and a top 10 center of all time. He’s a better scorer than Jokic (better shooter, better dunker, quicker post game, and draws more fouls) He’s just as good at rebounding. He’s only one tier under Jokic in passing, but more than makes up for that by being a better defender. He gets more blocks, more steals, and protects the rim better. He’s also a better free throw shooter. Embiid is also the better athlete, and probably stronger than Jokic, especially on defense. I think Embiid being a better scorer and better defender, makes up for Jokic being a better passer, and in everything else they’re about equal. If you deduct what they’re giving up on defense from what they’re scoring, Embiid is like +10 on Jokic. He’s just been cursed the last few years with a string of injuries that never seem to stop piling up. Embiid should have an even better “what if” case than D. rose and Tmac because he proved more in his time on the court, and the only reason he doesn’t get the same respect based on his potential as players like them is because too many fans let how much they like a player influence how good they think that player is. People will rate guys higher than they should, just because they’re likeable, just like Anthony Edwards.

Each shot type has different value, and long midranges simply don't rank high there, which is why you'd rather use them as counters rather than your original plan imo. If we really really really exaggerate it, it's like you wouldn't want the best half-court-shooter ever to take a lot of half court shots, only in really specific situations. So obviously KD's midrange is good for way more than just end of period buzzer beating, but it's very possible to misuse it.
I'd say though that most star players that come to mind suffer from some sort of shot selection imbalance, so KD is in good company I guess

Plus league average from the field is less than 50 percent and 3 point averages are around 36 percent. 40 percent is elite that is conversations for the best three point shooters in the league, not some average nba player. I get the point that the midrange sucks, but I’m not even sure he even watches the suns play. KD doesn’t only shoot midranges, that’s a hyperbolic statement. He can have his midrange shot be his preferred shot when he scores nearly 30 points a game on good efficiency. Also KD might be shooting more midranges because of the suns offense. It’s literally an iso battle, each player takes a turn 1 on 1. What is he meant to do when their primary point guard is dbook?

now that I have watched a full season of suns basketball and not only 9 games and the 2023 playoffs, I have to (mostly) agree with you. He is not a top 10 player anymore. He is a slightly better defender than you give him credit for, he is a decent playmaker, not a bad one. And he doesn't take enough 3s, I'll give you that. I think I walked into the same trap as most NBA fans that know Kevin Durant for who he is, but are not watching every single game of his because they are not a suns fan, a Brooklyn fan or a Warriors fan back in the days. He has some serious flaws, he is not a great leader and I don't think he can be the number #1 option on a team that does not have prime Steph Curry as well. Luckily for the Suns, they have Devin Booker and I agree with you, he is the better player by now. Most people are getting distracted by his beautiful looking stats, but Kevin Durant is a worse player than you all think. But to see that, you would have to watch 70+ games of Durant in a season

People hate him, I get it. People still remember that abysmal playoff series against the lakers while that was just six games. Shooting can be flueky during a short playoff run. During the rest of his career and also his games for Canada, Brooks showed that he is far from a terrible shooter. I don't understand why you don't want to see this, unless it is just personal dislike
the difference in between Lively and Gafford is very minor. In fact, I don't see any team in the NBA where the starting Center and the backup Center are that close to another when it comes to overall skill and impact. Maybe the Hawks, that's it. Lively is young though, so he will probably be a lot better than Gafford soon

His first two years he was right at league average while taking very hard 3s, unlike pure shooters like Grayson Allen, he is creator. His third year was such a major down that I can't really buy it, no on eis shooting that low (28%). As a mavs fan I might just be mad because im a Daniel Gafford glazer, but I think he’s the most underrated player on our team, he casually lead the league in in fg%, no one cares, he casually averaged 2 bpg (technically 1.9), no one cares, he’s casually a perfect fit with luka just like Lively, no one cares.
