      Even if they don't, they could be retro-engineered. Atlantis, Moebius, and Polar Lights have all retro-engineered kits that had "lost" tooling!

    In 1966, I was ten years old, my brother was eight. We lived in apartments in Downey, California. As kids are wont to do, we liked to explore places and things. One of those was dumpsters. Particularly after someone moved out. One day, we peer inside one and low and behold, filling that thing to what to us looked like the brim, were models! Complete kits, some started, some finished. Can you imagine the treasure this was to us? Our dad was a modeler (R/C) and we had been fiddling with plastics since we were old enough to hold a tube of glue. We got another boy involved and we cleaned it out. Phantom Mustang, Visible Man, all sorts of AMT, Revell, Airfix etc. Planes, cars, tanks. Among them was this and the missile collection, and I still have misc parts from those in my spares box. Many, many years later, when recalling this event with my brother, we realized there was probably a story behind all this. A boy growing up and casting off "childish things", maybe going off to college. Or maybe he joined or was drafted into the Army or Marines.

      Now there's a cool idea - A scenario I could see is that if the AP set comes back and is a seller, a WWII set could be done. In 1/240 scale, a WWII set would either be smaller, or could fit more planes on the same size base. Same goes for the Navy since carrier planes are smaller. That'd be something, wouldn't it! Thanks, Paul!

      @@2modeler347 This would be a great idea, I would like someone to model all AAF/USAF/USN aircraft from WWII on to today. It doesn't have to be done all at once...but 1/240 scale is prefect for a collection of all US aircraft. They could be released in small kits with maybe 2 of each aircraft, say all 6 century series, and maybe 2 of each, one NMF and one for camo. I can dream, can't I???

    Thanks for the review. I fondly remember building this kit as a kid growing up on a SAC B-47 base (I still have the booklet). I've been searching for this kit for decades. I know it's the holy grail for many modelers and at the top of the list for the most desired reissue. I always wondered why it was never reissued, but hope it will eventually return someday. I know it would be extremely popular and a big seller.

      Gary, I recall that Aurora's Moonbus from 2001: A Space Odyssey was one of their rare flops when it debuted circa 1969, possibly because of its size and resulting price. Modelers grew into it after it was discontinued, and it became a holy-grail collector's quest until Moebius re-released it. It's done fine since having been re-boxed. If the AP kit does get re-released, either from original molds or as a result of a retro-retool, I believe it will do fine since we've "grown into" it. In 1959, a $4.00 model was a stretch but circa 2020, modelers have demonstrated that they'll pay $50 or $100 or more for a model kit! I'd easily pay $50 or $60 for a newly-released Air Power set.

    This was such an Awesome kit. My friend and I tried to outdo each other on the number of model aircraft in our air forces.
    This kit with 18 aircraft in one kit put me into the lead until he bought one. I would love to see reissue. I am 72 and still have all the aircraft, I have removed all the yellowed decals. I am so sad that I lost one of the floats for my favorite, the SA-16 ALBATROSS. Back in the late 90's my father had to take back a cottage in Northern Wisconsin after the buyers defaulted on their payments. In a utility cellar, I found the Monogram 3 plane bomber set which had 3 aircraft on a stand from the big kit. A B-52, B-58, and I forget the third.
    Possibly a B-66, that I had built as a child. I cut down the tail of the B-52 so it looked like a G model, painted, and using scrounged decals, modeled it into a B-52G complete with correct tail and fuselage markings of the aircraft that had crashed with loss of all crew, 30 miles away from our cottage in the 60's.
    It now hangs in a display cabinet in the computer room of our Florida home.

      The Monogram Bomber Group kit you mentioned contained the B-57, B-58, and B-66, no B-52. I'd guess the B-52 was too large for the 3-plane display and would have driven the cost above the desired 49-cent price point.

    I had something like this kit the exception being the mounting base was clear plastic and the supports were plastic. I remember that the kit was very easy to assemble although I had adult help!

      @@2modeler347 Clear base and clear supports sounds like the original Monogram Missile Arsenal kit where the winged cruise missiles (Snark, Regulus, Bomarc, and Matador) were mounted on supports. Another possibility ("very easy to assemble") would be the Monogram Blue Angels kit.

    I would buy this kit in a heartbeat! I had no idea it ever existed. It is a nostalgic and sober reminder of the Cold War, and that alone makes it a historic model. If Atlantis has these molds, I would love to see this model back in service. But it would also need to have the literature inside to really make it outstanding. I hope your scans of these items comes in handy to reproduce them again. Thank you for reminding the world that this kit existed.

      I was amazed that Monogram didn't use raised panel lines. They're much easier to engineer and that's what they did on the vast majority of their kits. Likewise, even though many of the planes were new, Monogram was able to get enough relevant information to make them pretty accurate. There are a few MINOR off-angles and lines here and there, but by and large, those errors are slight and the accuracy and detailing is just amazing! Thanks for commenting!!!

  • @TheRebel51
    @TheRebel51 2 роки тому +1

    They are 1/240. There was a B-29 in that scale put out by Comet or some similar company way back in the day… it even came in a gift set with three other models of various other scales (A-26, B-24 and B-25) that were not close to the B-29 in scale! Those three also came out individually as giveaways in cereal boxes. There is a site on EBay where you can buy a set of decals for the AirPower kit (newly reproduced) for a reasonable price. There was also a DC-7 in approximately 1/240 produced years ago that comes up on EBay from time to time. Will update with more info later!

    • @2modeler347
      @2modeler347  3 роки тому

      Yeah, the booklet was printed on a fancy, course-grain paper like what you'd see in a swanky invitation or high-end product brochure. I recall some booklets from model kits in the 1980's that came on a nice, shiny bond, but nothing like what Monogram did with the Air Power set in 1959. A few folks have stated that they hope Atlantis re-releases it; I could easily see Atlantis going with a high-grade paper with the book.

    If you can find them…. Dubina once produced models of the Dc-7 and L-1649 Connie in 1/250 that could be added to the AirPower set and I think even a Fokker F-27 that was used in the AF I believe (Army used F-27 for sure). Other models were produced in or near that scale such as Bachman Miniplanes (ok…. Might be a little off on the spelling😱)‼️. I actually have some of these models as well as the gift set with the B-29.

    What a nostalgic model!! I never had the chance of making it. Hope the moulds are not lost. And speaking of Monogram may I respectfully suggest you to do a video of the most famous civil aircraft ever made in plastic: The Monogram Piper Tri-Pacer and the Cessna 180 both float version (with a beautiful gal in bikini!) and the land version. Do you happen to know if the moulds are still around? Thanks EDUARDO

    • @2modeler347
      @2modeler347  3 роки тому

      Thanks, Eduardo. Like you, I never had this kit and my older brother Dick didn't either. I'm sure there are many of us younger folks that would buy a re-release or retro-version if it came back. I don't have the Monogram Tri-Pacer or Cessna 180, although I am a fan of the kits and civilian aircraft in general (we have a Minicraft Civil Aircraft page; you can Google that). If the molds to the Tri-Pacer and Cessna 180 are still around, I wouldn't be surprised if Atlantis has them and they'' get released sooner or later.

    • @davidfifer4729

      I'd say the odds are good both the Tri-Pacer and Cessna molds are still around, as kits have been reissued occasionally over the years. Atlantis could have them, but they have not stated that they do to the best of my knowledge.

    I still have all my original Airpower set models. Mostly unpainted except for canopies in black. I guess I was very young and my hands were steady. I honestly don't know how I was able to paint the canopies without getting paint on the surrounding frames!.
    I always loved the SA-16 but in trying to paint the fuselage I lost one then both of the pontoons.
    My friend and I always tried to outnumber each other's aircraft or Air Force. This was a great kit for me as I was able to add 18 aircraft to my Air Force with just this one kit.
    I would definitely buy a re-release and perhaps two. If nothing else, just for the decals to put on my originals!
