This might just be me being biased, but I’d rather say that Maister got a fair bit better on the matchup rather than him getting back in shape. Also super true. Light had his number on their more recent tournaments, but at this one Maister really cracked down on his game plan

Maister lost 3-0 to him the first time in the Winners Finals and looked like he was struggling to find a way, and MKLeo also lost. The combined intel of them both wouldn't have hurt to devise a better strategy for the endgame :)

I have never agreed with people that always said “Steve’s not that bad, just gotta learn the matchup”. No, he has huge advantages over all the other characters, and just because it’s *possible* to win, doesn’t mean Steve being too advantaged is ok.
Steve has Falco's uptilt but mobile. Kirby down B and Villger FSmash depending on when you get off anvil. A projectile command grab that can set up for spikes or kill out right with red stone. Shoto jab combos but also while mobile. Tether grab, kill throw, combo throw. Innumerable ledge traps, literally keep out with blocks, zero disadvantage state, hardest hitting reversals. Easy 0-80 combos. But apparently he's just ok. We shouldn't worry about him. Multiple Steve's not just Onin have but mainly him in this tourny have beat top players. Onin has beat MuteAce, Destroyed Mkleo, Maister, Gluto, Riddles and will most likely beat Maister again and win Smash con while only losing 1 game.
You can learn the machup and some people have. Maister used to have a steve problem but he has learned the machup. The problem is that no steve is the same and the best steves don't make the same mistakes that the lesser ones do. That is why he lost so badly. There are an infinite good ways to play steve.
Light started very well but he fell down very badly because of his confidence. That's the problem when you are too confident of yourself. You can get instant karma without knowing

Fox only form of reliable damage is off raw grabs, Most of lights damage is off grabs, I don’t think people realize how insane that is for a character like fox who gets nothing off grabs to rely on it bcuz you can’t touch GnWs shield. While also having to pray the g&w misses his edge guards
