That was Marty holding the mic, Paul was on guitar. First time hearing Two Heads for me, I recognized the second one. "Jorma" is definitely pronounced with a "Y" sound. You're saying it right. Awesome to see the old footage!
White shirt - Paul, Black shirt - Marty (keyboards on first song). "After Bathing at Baxters" was "code" for having done LSD. "Pooneil" is a combination of Winnie the Pooh and Fred Neil (songwriter), they did a cover of his song "The Other Side of This Life". They also did a song "The House at Pooneil Corners". The triad of Marty, Paul and Grace is what took the Airplane to such heights. Interesting how they got Grace's doubletrack vocals on the first song. Grace was, and still is THE Queen of the F*ing Universe. "Small Package" is an instrumental. Thanks Rich!!
Lennon once mentioned the Airplane (and the Dead) after Paul came up with the Sgt. Pepper name: “The whole West Coast long-named group thing was coming in, when people were no longer ‘The Beatles’ or ‘The Crickets’ - they were suddenly ‘Fred And His Incredible Sheep Shrinking Grateful Airplanes.’
Narcs came to my Jr High in '68 and proclaimed the following: Intelligent smack users take a laxative because smack is constipating and then warned against the drug STP by cautioning us eighth graders that the STP in the auto store won't get you high. Then, they burned some pot so we'd know what it smelled like. I think they were high.
These were the studio versions off of Baxter's, a landmark "concept" album. Ron Cobb was an "underground" artist overshadowed by R. Crumb. The inside record jacket featured spontaneous drawings by the different members. One had a black amorphous entity with eyes oozing through a doorway. It had a dialogue balloon that said simply "isn't". Weirded me out. Probably drawn by Paul. He was known to be surpassingly strange
There was nothing to compare to Grace and Marty facing each other and singing dual leads. I saw them 3 times while I was still in HS 😊 Last time (Volunteers tour) she was pregnant with Chyna. We CAN Be Together! BTW- the Joshua light show changed my life and blew my mind. A glimpse of what was possible. Take care, Lee 🎉
Suggest you watch/listen to the 15m Pooneil at Woodstock. In the middle, they give a few minutes preview of Hijack from Paul's Blows Against the Empire that he would release in 1970. This Pooniel is amazing. Jack Casady is aooooo good.
These two songs are the A and B sides of their single released in Aug. 1967. The Ballad Of You & Me & Pooneil was the A side. Wonder what TV show this is from...anyone?
For pure Grace, there's always Somebody To Love - she holds the last note for about four measures, one can't believe it :) Also good is Young Girl Sunday Blues
♫ You can never have enough AIrplane! and how true that is. Out of all my hundreds of different bands I have in my collection, the Airplane is and will always be my favorite band by far and Starship, a close second. With tons of live stuff, they were the one band who were never ashamed to shake the foundation. Paul Kantner once said in an interview, that if they were in any other country, he would have been executed because in the US he got away with everything. Check out "Manhole" by Grace Slick and Craig Chaquico on lead guitar (and many others). And also, all of the side projects by Paul Kantner and Grace. 👀
Grace &Marty Balin did most of their Vocals m in 60's they just hired a guy to E.Q. the band, most were lousy Marty did most of writing for band! Grace has a deep Tremelo, and vibrato The best!
For a Grace Slick/Jefferson Airplane tour de force listen to Rejoyce from their album After Bathin' At Baxters. It'll twist yer mind into places it wasn't intended to explore...but you'll be beggin' for more...one o' their best.
After Bating at Baxter's, while it had some really high points, did not work. They had heard some of Zappa's work and tried to emulate it but they just weren't cut out for it. Yes, Jorma is pronounced Yorma. Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady formed Hot Tuna (they wanted to call it Hot Shit but the record label wouldn't go for it), which very blues based. Keep On Truckin' is one of their best.
And there are two different versions of Hot (fuckin') Tuna - acoustic and electric. Both are great but very different experiences. Jorma also did a fantastic solo album called "Quah". I highly recommend the song Genesis from that album. Also the cover of Quah is excellent (and very bizarre).

Awesome to see the old footage!
Love the airplane, way into it.
Jefferson Airplane was my absolute favorite group in the 60s and still one of my favorites now!
Not sure I know these, but the Airplane is always a good listen.

Grace said that she could only sing three notes, but she could sing em really loud. She underrated herself
Nice video of this great band ... love Grace
Greqt live vídeo After Bathing at Baxters is probably my favorite album of theirs. Glad you like them. There is so much more.
Looking forward to these, Rich! I can't recall them from the names, but I bet I know them :)
I can't wait to see this one!
Marty: His voice so important to Jefferson Airplane and Starship
How could anyone not love a song with "Pooneil" in the name?
grace is now 84 and an artist. her voice is so good
1967 Wow, it’s always neat to see footage of 60s music. That era…
Two of my favorite JA songs. "After Bathing at Baxter's" is my favorite album of theirs. Another great song from that album is "Rejoyce".
The bass solo by Cassady is amazing!
One of my favorite groups. Thanks

STP was apparently a psychedelic amphetamine standing for "Serenity, Tranquility and Peace" I think they made that up as well.
Back again for another ride
I’ve not heard these songs by the Airplane. Liked seeing the performance. A moment in time. Thanks Rich and Lee.
Try “Today”, “Martha”, “Pretty As You Feel” for something really bizarre “Lather”. Love this band.
Fly Jefferson Airplane...Get you there on time!

Intense & colorful ❤️

Been waiting for this
Lee you are the best reactor on UA-cam
She had a set of lungs on her. That's for sure. Such power. She could rein it in also. I didn't follow them. All what I heard on radio.
This was the studio tracks....not live..not the clearest copy but great visual.

It's always cool to see them playing, but these were the studio versions with the band miming to them.
If you feel and greasy heart songs from crown of creation from jefferson airplane are good also
We were warned that LSD would keep giving "flashbacks" for your whole life....over 50 years later and I'm STILL waiting for my flashbacks, dammit!!!

Grace, too old to be president, but wouldn't it be interesting?
It's playback. It's the album recording.
Please do the studio version of their song "rejoyce". That is the correct spelling. Has the best overall Grace vocals.

Freak music !!!!!
Ah! The art of lip-synching.
