  • At Silobration, Chip and Jo sat down to chat about her new book-and we wanted to share the conversation with you! Jo talks about the power of writing down your story, how to let go of the weights that hold you back, and giving yourself grace in the process. Thinking Chip and his apparent ability to be his silly/smart/playful self has helped Joanna understand that perfection is NOT the goal.
Joanna: I’m hoping that after you read the book you will be inspired to write your own story.
For as they say everyone has a story and they all matter.
Joanna and Chip you are such an inspiration.
God bless your family and your story. ❤️🙏👆🏼
Oh and Chip would love to hear more of your story!!

Joanna Gaines' story is not unlike a lot of children's stories who come from immigrant ancestors. Being a military spouse and living on post I met many Korean brides that struggled to fit into American society. And their stories remind me so much of Joanna's mother. Since my husband had lived with a Korean family, he spoke Korean almost fluently so most of the military couples we were friends with, the wife was Korean, and we did everything we could to help her to feel at home and assimilate, while not losing her culture. There's only a generation between myself and my immigrant ancestors who didn't speak English and had to work hard for to achieve the American dream. But all the trials, all the bullying that Joanna faced made her who she is today and look what she's achieved! Not only has she built an empire that will be a legacy to her children, but she is loved by her legions of fans. Congrats JoJo--thanks for showing us the possibilities this life has to offer.

Okay I'm 75 now and I tell you the tears still come every now and then. Because you're proud of your children that I did raise them up right and the only reason why I raise them up right is all to the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ that gave me the wisdom to do what was right far from a perfect mother but I raised my children up to praise and to give God all the glory and serve him with a whole heart. That's the most important thing knowing our savior the one that died on the cross and shed his blood in Christ we are enough because he he did it for us on the cross.

Being half Korean myself I'm sure we've had similar feelings we went through being different from most of the population but similar to you have learned the appreciation and love i have of all the diverse background I had being multiracial. But I love seeing how you share all these stories b/c people all go through some kind of similar emotion but maybe different circumstances. Relationship/Love is the heart of God and connecting to others in a real way helps many through healing little wounds we have had through growing up in this broken world. I do really hope you share more of your family culture of growing up mixed. And I also hope you dive into the korean food in your shows. I ate a bulgogi Benedict breakfast at a restaurant here in Sarasota, FL and just thought this dish describes me being half korean and thinking this is so unique but was also feeling silly b/c I felt like I was connecting to this piece of dish b/c of the fusion. 😂😄

Perfectionism is exhausting, and I wonder how much comes from parental expectations, and how much is self imposed because we don't want anyone to see our flaws or weaknesses. All we can do is try to find a way to let our "best" be enough and teach this to our children.

It is interesting when I would first saw Joanna and started watching Fixer Upper I just looked at it and I saw what a lovely vivacious woman and would just watch the interaction of her in the family and the clients and the different things. As her being different because she was Asian was not even a big thing for me. It was all part of who she was a beautiful person. I did absolutely did not focus on Asian.

When she was talking about how great it is to gain wisdom but she wanted to be like her 4 year old who could pick up a leave and talk about it for 45 minutes... I think what she was describing was the word wonder. We do tend to lose this ability as we get older.
