Back in the day, how did they score new routines? When someone finally did a triple axel jump, the double's score was lowered, but the difficulty wasn't adjusted.
All things considered, she could have turned the volume up all the way on her IPod. With the gym being really quiet, it's likely that most would have heard the song at least well enough to know what song it was. The judges almost certainly would have been able to hear it. :)
I think we interpret this scene as if the audience is hearing the music. She was waiting for the music to start playing. It doesn't matter if the iPod had speakers or powerful enough for the audience to hear.
I really wish they allowed more creativity in gymnastics routines. But that might require a more flexible code and more work. I would add that as a score category: creativity.

The unique format allowed the competitors creative license to use elements such as special costumes and music to enhance the theatrical elements of their performance. It would take away from actual athletic talent and skill. Anyone can shake their arse and shimmie their hips to a beat while making cute faces. That's what strippers do and they get paid for it. What takes skill is banging out difficult maneuverers back to back, and staying focused while doing it on a narrow beam of death. There is a time and place for having fun with the sport and then there is the time and place when it needs to be serious and held true. Trying to add gimmick flare to it would ruin it. If you want a prime example, look at figure skating. There is classic figure skating, where you can not deviate at all from the classical method, and then there is ice dancing. I’m a 70 year old man and I saw this years ago and was flabbergasted by the performances of the young girls in it. Great casting,the gymnastic performances were first rate,(I am sure they had real gymnasts doing the routines) and Jeff was his usual self,great. When it comes up on Netflix I always watch it. I’ve been a gymnastics fan ever since I saw Nadia Comaneci and Olga Korbut in the Olympics back in the 70’s.

I have a younger cousin named wei wei who is also Chinese and does gymnastics. She and I watch this movie together at least once a year. It’s our favorite movie.

I knew if I asked him to play any song on the radio he would, I guess to bless my faith. So I said "ok, Lord play "Come as you are by Nirvana". I turned on the radio and the song started playing right there on the spot, perfectly… I started getting flooded with chills like a waterfall, crying, and trembling. He stayed with me for 10 minutes in my driveway. until I got outta the car. A couple months after that I started getting amazing prayers answered way more often, because it helped me quit doubting when I pray and I was lined up with biblical instructions. It's 6 years later and I still get answered prayers in Jesus name.

me writing a response 10 months later...the main issue is that she doesn't actually do enough skills to justify 1st place for the event....i agree would've been awesome but in "attempting" to keep with the way scoring worked at that time...the video doesn't show her score but I feel like it was a 7 or lower because she had a mount and a dismount plus a couple other things but would've gotten hit for a lot of "breaks"
I can't imagine how hard it was for Tim and Elfi to be in such an unrealistic, ignorant reenactment of gymnastics after being commentators for so long lol
The movie has a lot of flaws but the problem the girl have with the scoring system is the one thing they nailed right, it's a problem that even now nobody wants to solve.
