2. I had a few sound issues with this recording. You'll notice a couple of skip like sounds during the commentary. I cleaned it up pretty well, otherwise.
3. PAL actually consists of multiple format differences itself. There are numerous countries outside of Europe that used them, so the term is used loosely here. Primarily, these were European games only.
4. Europe also received numerous Japanese games that the US did not. Mega Man X3, King of Fighters 95, and Deep Fear among them.
5. I tried these on both US and Japanese systems. All of them were playable.
6. My Rugby and Soccer skills are novice level to say the least. Be gentle.
7. Swagman was originally a 32X game. It was cancelled and made a Saturn game that the US was suppose to get, and was cancelled at the last minute.
8. Discworld is a work of Terry Pratchett, a British author who passed in 2015. The games are based on his books. The US received the first game in the series.
9. Jonah Lomu passed away in 2015 of kidney disease.
10. Many of these games have Playstation versions available.
It's impressive how you still come up with interesting Saturn-related content that even in 2020 no one else has covered yet. You truly love that system and so do I!
yup, he's the definitive Saturn source
I love the Saturn as well. There are still many games he hasn’t covered yet and their peripherals
I have several of thse. The Sega Saturn was pretty big here in Portugal, destroyed Nintendo and gave the PS1 a good fight for much of its earlier years before taking off
True.... Greetings from other fellow Portuguese!! 😁
I mean I am not surprised in the slightest that the PSOne struggled against the Saturn there, as it should have. The N64 on the other hand was a console with quite a few magnificent, generation 5 defining games, and looking back it should have performed similar to how the Wii performed during it's generation. A Gen 5 with the N64 on top, with the Saturn containing all of the non Sony produced games, as well as what it did receive, and the 3rd party games of the generation that skewed toward needing CD sized media would have been optimal, and a truly wonderful thing. Sega for one thing would have surely lasted a hell of a lot longer as a console producer, and the Saturn's life span and the limits of it's capabilities being tested would have been far greater.
Another portuguese here! Just started my Saturn collection and it's surreal how easily and cheap you can find here the system and most of the games, compared to almost every country.
@@joaornmarques Portugal was Sega land.... Untouchable!!!
Sega Saturn outsold ps1 until 1997....then we all know what happened....
The ironic thing is all of these games were bargain bin fillers in the UK, no one really wanted them. Unless they were desperate to play something cheap.
But you could go one further with this and do SECAM exclusive games, like Spirou and The Ottifants.
not even Discworld 2? 😨
The Ottifants... I think only germans (like me) know the comedian Otto Walkes and his Ottifanten. There was also a cartoon series about those Ottifants...
Discworld was never a bargain bin game it's always been expensive and in demand
@@ChrisBrown-xb8pi Really? I worked in Electronics Boutique at the time and we couldn't get rid of the things.
That, The Mask on SNES and Virtua Racing on the Mega Drive for some reason.
@@Larry The third entry, Discworld Noir, was made after the first two games sold 1 million all together. Not too shabby if you ask me.
Fricking love this channel. Nostalgia deluxe.
Still got all my issues of Sega Saturn Magazine. Nice use of the music from level 1 of Loaded - another great game and strong port for the Saturn.Greetings from the UK and another great video.
My best friend in school had a Saturn, the Saturn did OK for a short while in certain parts of Europe. What a great system - he also had Trash It, we played it quite a while, was fun in multiplayer for a bunch of dumb teenagers. Love your channel!
Thanks Carlos. :)
That World League Soccer '98 looks really good
To this day Z is still one of my fav rts games of all time. I love this game, also really liked Discworld sadly I only had the demo back in the day.
Everybody criticising the pronunciation of Lomu, but not of UEFA.
Being from the UK, i have some of these and got great enjoyment out of Z, Formula Karts, Euro 96 and WLS 98 back in the day. Funnily enough, my brother and i played Euro 96 on Christmas day, wasn't as good as i remembered to be honest but i would definitely recommend the other 3 i previously mentioned.
Discworld was one of the first PS1 games I owned. My friend and I would trade it back and forth, not that we didn't like it. But because it was so slow and difficult in ways with the off color puzzle results. Back then we didn't have the internet so it was hard to figure out the puzzles.
It's now got a huge nostalgia factor for me, and I still own it =)
USA exclusives: Basketball + shovelware
EU Exclusives: Soccer + shovelware
One thing about discworld 1 and 2 had big cast including Eric Idle from monty python, nigel planer from the young ones and Rob Brydon who has done various shows.
I had Euro96, it was really actua soccer for Saturn, I did not play it as much as worldwide soccer 97 but it had a pretty hilarious commenter in the Italian edition
Your channel is awesome. As a SEGA fan, I just wanted to say thank you.
Interesting to note: the PS1 version of Atlantis was far worse and missed all the transition movements. It was just a low resolution slideshow.
In the case of the Sega Saturn version, not all the PC version transitions are present, many of them are missing too, but they cared to put in the most important ones (ie, those of areas you have to visit and re-visit often). It's true that the PlayStation version just opted to remove all of them, which is funny because the PlayStation version spawns 3 discs while the Sega Saturn versions spawns 2 discs.
One commend I'd add that wasn't mentioned in the vid: Swagman has an excellent soundtrack (Nathan McCree; Tomb Raider) that goes a long way to increasing the enjoyment of the title. Really enhances the game's macabre vibe.
Excellent video as always :)
I like that you give a short moment with no narration at the end of each game to just take it in.
8:40 great unintentional pun.
Some of these games were also released in Australia.
So happy to hear you say 'Zed' haha.
Yeah, it's why I used PAL and not just European exclusives. For Zed; I worked 13 years with Brits, so I knew that Z would need to be properly said.
Eh, you can use European exclusives. Australia is europe
@@SegaLordX Appreciate the effort! I may be biased saying this, but I do think "zed" is a better pronunciation - the American "c" and "z" sound a little too similar, whereas "zed" is more distinct. Anyway, great video as usual.
@@colddripgaming commonwealth
PAL-region person here.
Delighted to see you play Jonah Lomu Rugby. It's the best rugby union game ever made. Arguably the only truly excellent game made of the sport. Played it on PS1 and DOS back in the day.
Some of the commentary is hilarious. Intentionally so, I mean.
I'm a massive Discworld fan and both Discworld 1 & 2 on the Saturn are great point and click adventures, highly recommend. Great video bud. As a UK Saturn owner, I skipped most of these games on this list for many of the reasons you highlighted.
Ever played Discworld Noir?
my favorite in the game series
@@Nov-5062 If I could post screenshots on UA-cam then I'd show you my copy heh. Love Noir, some truly great dialogue in that and a much more darker (perhaps more accurate) take on the Discworld universe. Good stuff.
It's an interesting coverage. You may as well have done one of games that were released in Japan and Europe but not in North America, as there are several of them. In some cases like Deep Fear, Discworld, and Riven, they may serve as games more convenient to get in European version rather than Japanese version for North American gamers like you, due to the fact of the language.
Discworld II was so much fun! =). How can you not love the humour? I enjoyed it as part of the phase I went through of playing videogames while eating a meal. I enjoyed how I could just click on something, and let the dialogue play out while I ate, think about the puzzles, etc, and then click something else to move along the action - some cool, one-handed, laid-back gaming, - but very entertaining! Other games I enjoyed like that were the FMV adventure Torico - known as Lunacy in the US I believe. One of the few FMV games done right, =D,
Dude... I love your videos so much. They are simply the best.
I'm trying to get my ass in shape and lose some weight so I'm not a Chubby scrub and while I'm on the recumbent bike I always watch your vids.
Keep up the awesome content man.
Great video, I'd never even heard of most of these! Gotta try some of these now...
Haha! "Jonah Low-moo" 😂
Coming from New Zealand like me - I feel I should clear up the pronunciation 😉
It's "Lo" (like "log" but without the G) "mu" (moo but quick, not like a cow sound effect 😂).
As for the Formula carts game - it's likely Pal optimised so will need to be run at 50hz. Your Japanese Saturn will be running it at 60hz, hence the overscan.
Living in a Pal territory myself - none of these exclusives seem like anything I would bother purchasing myself (maybe Formula carts) but my own collection is made up of 90% Ntsc-J games and I wouldn't have it any other way 😊
@Karl Burnett A Sports game show on the BBC (They Think It's All Over) tried to get Jonah Lomu on an episode once, but the researcher misheard his name and asked Joana Lumley to come on instead!
I had done a review on some euro Saturn exclusive on my channel too a few months ago.
Nice review.
What were your favorites?
Sega Lord X formula kart by far. The game has great graphics and is fun to play.
Swagman is great too but a bit childish
You know a game isn't worth your money nor your time when it's called "Thrash it". It goes literally and directly to the thrash can. On the other hand, Formula Karts Special Edition is also my favorite of this batch. Happy New Year, Sega Lord X!
Yo whats up Sega Lord X! Happy new year bro!!
You too, man. Hope we all survive it.
Z was a popular title on PC, I forgot there was a Saturn port.
Very interesting. I didn't know all these were pal exclusives.
I think most of them have a Playstation version, since the PSX was huge in Europe and received almost every third-party game of the era.
I think all of them were on PlayStation expect for Formula Karts, Frankenstein and Euro 96
@@mrjameshendry I think even Formula Karts was on psx :)
@@Ryuhei64 You are correct.
I've really appreciated your videos on the saturn. It's also my favorite system. I just got back into it. You helped me import Japanese games. I was curious about PAL. Thank you for helping me make mistakes!
Without even realising their exclusivity until seeing this video I already own several of these that I picked up in the 90s. Thanks for this revealing insight!
Formula Karts looks great! I'd have good fun with that one.
Jonah Lomu Rugby is a gem of a game and a classic. In so many ways the Rugby version of Sensible Soccer. Saturn version plays the best too thanks to the pad
Swagman is one of my most favorite games on the system :) Many greetings from Germany and Happy New Year! :)
Great video, I remember getting Formula Karts and after trying to win the first race multiple times I quit and gathered dust on my shelf. WLS however was a good blast with my friends. I wasn't keen on uefa 96. I always wanted Discworld 2 but it was always expensive.
Happy New year SLX
"You're not my buddy, PAL" !!!
-American Sega Saturn
“PAL exclusive” is not a phrase that gets anyone excited. However, there are many Japanese games on various systems that got a European release but not a North American release. There a few absolute bangers in that category.
I was never a "sega" man but I do love this channel
Jonah Lomu was insane physically. He was absolutely enormous yet could sprint at the speed of world class sprinters. He was so far ahead of any other player in skill and physicality, he'd just get the ball and start running and that was that, there was nothing that could be done about it, he couldn't be tackled. I used to play that game on the PS1, it's still one of the best rugby games out there, partly because there's so few rugby games, but either way yeah
duffman18 he could never score against the Boks😏
Great video X.
Also, Happy New Year Sega fans!
Just wanted to say man, I love your content. Keep up the great work, esp all the Saturn stuff. Love it!
about wls'98, there is a iusse about pal 60hz optimized games running on ntsc console reguarding the cut off upper and lower part of game screen. you can fix this by modding ntsc to pal switch or switchless as i have done on my pal saturn or buy a cheap pal saturn and running pal optimized games on it. Be aware that 50/60hz mod is different than region mod, in this case every time you change your region the internal backup saves will be erased.
@iVirtualPlays of course i have it. But sega ics have epoxy glue under them and it is hard to remove for not skilled technician
@iVirtualPlays i desolder many bios and memory module on satun and i found that not all the motherboards had epoxy under ics. The same on dreamcast.
Discworld 2 and Formula Carts are still fun games. I never liked Swagman but at least i could sell it for a really nice price. XD
Lovely work ! I'm always looking for Saturn info and your channel delivers !
(BTW : Sweet Mega Turrican soundtrack before the credits of the video :p)
First off thank you for this awesome video and information. Second off I need Atlantis, disc world 2, and Tim curry in my life lol. I think Z looks like a hell of a good time. Man having a nice cold corona with Atlantis and Tim curry sounds legit lol
Formula Karts is a great game. Spent countless hours playing it! Great carrier mode, awesomw graphics and playability
Man, I'm not interested in Sega or console gaming whatsoever, but your videos are so entertaining to watch!
Tom Hagen
Weirdo. lol
I loved Swagman on the Saturn when I was a kid. It had such great atmosphere. The graphics still look great.
Karts caught my attention the most here. Checked price before video ended. Not to bad but definitely not cheap. I'd like to give it a try some day. Thanks for posting. I appreciate your hard work here on this channel.
You could make a video about Saturn Japanese games that had a PAL version, like Deep Fear and Keio Flying Squadron.
Discworld2 was released in the U.S. on that "other" 32 bit console that shall remain nameless.
3do?
Europeans got MMX3 but USA got MMX4 & MM8 while Japan got all three
Nice. Fewer PAL releases than I would have thought. Alot of point and click games I see. Great video
Formula Karts used to boil my blood as a teenager!
Heck yeah. The AI is ruthless.
Formula Karts has great techno music.
I remember reading about this one back in the day, I was anticipating picking it up in North America but it was never released here.
My half-brother had a Saturn, which I ended up with (mine died). I had two copies of Sega Rally and Sega Manx TT Superbike... but I also had Formula Karts and Euro '96. Never actually played either of them! As for WLS '98, I had the demo on Sega Flash 7 which only played a half as Brazil vs. Italy (I think), and it was very impressive to look at back then. SWWS '98 was supposed to be good as well, but the commentary was coded for shorter Japanese sentences, leading to brief stutters in the Western release. Again, the demo of that only let you play a half, though you had way more teams on offer.
Happy New Year Sega Lord X !
I really think that in Europe we were a little luckier than the Americans, we didn't have all these games in motion pictures or turnips like Congo The Movie. In 1998 the Saturn was still quite active, games like Steep slope sliders, Street Fighter collection, Nascar 98 and others released in late 97 in North America were released in the first half of 1998 in Europe. We had a version of Riven, 3 exclusives which is still surprising and Deep Fear in addition to the Sega games also released in North America. So of course the Saturn was not much more popular here, however, it was easy to find games, new or used and the console was quite present in the press or in shops. When I see videos of Americans on the Saturn, which seems to have been a more confidential console there and almost untraceable and nonexistent in some place, I tell myself that we have not had the same experience at all as Saturn's owners .
Love that Loaded music in the beginning. Thats a game Id love to see get a remake/remaster . Just fix the controls by switching to a twin stick set up, and make it not as dark lighting-wise.
Swagman,Formula Karts and WLS98 were very nice rentals back then.
Wait at 4:48 is that Eric Idle?
Maybe there’s something to Discworld 2 that I should check out....
Yes. That is Eric Idle. He plays Rincewind in both Discworld 1 & 2. Very funny games.
Loved playing WLS 98 and really enjoyed Z thanks SLX for highlighting some excellent exclusives
No problem. Glad you found it entertaining.
Had no idea Z was a pal exclusive, never played the Saturn version but played it to death on PC
I don't know if Z was ever released outside Europe for any platform. Maybe the PC version was. The console versions never were though, not even the PlayStation version.
The Formula Karts looked very nice, I would have to have this one.
A LIKE specially for that gorgeous into!
Pro tip: I played discworld ps1 version at first, just because the wizard is voiced by monty python Eric idle.....
How is that a pro tip
Played the US NTSC version of Swagman for Playstation. After a while it becomes an interesting puzzle adventure title as you swap between the brother and sister. Definitely has its issues, but I really enjoyed it overall! 🙂
I wonder if Trash-It was inspired by Wrecking Crew on the NES.
Interesting to see that Z got a console version.
Love the Sega Saturn!
Don’t we all. :)
I love turtles
Me too
I'm curious, is there a way to fix that bottom part of the screen thats missing when you play pal games on ntsc systems?
You can add a 50Hz/60Hz switch to your console, though you will of course need a TV or scaler that can handle the 625-line 50Hz system as well as the 525-line 60Hz system. How you add that switch depends very much on your console revision, some boards have solder pads for the switch right next to the battery compartment which makes it a very easy mod, others require cutting tracks and lifting a pin on the video chip. (I've done the opposite, added a switch so I can run my PAL console at 60Hz so that imports or unoptimised games run at the right speed and without borders).
Always thought the PAL Sega Saturn box art style looked a lot better than North America’s with the black color scheme. Sega should’ve translated and brought some of these. Especially Deep Fear, but Bernie Stolar is probably responsible
Appreciate the Loaded background music.
Okay, what TIm Curry was rambling on about with energy and vibrations and such... it's actually spot on, and pretty much was CERN is proving in their research all the time. Odd that.
I might sound pedantic here but UEFA is pronounced as you-ey-fa. Great video by the way.
Not at all. I know little about it, so I just pronounced it as I would NFL or NBA.
When I heard that U-E-F-A,I paused the video to take a breath. That was surreal.
A cool topic for a future video would be to do peace on the video game designers "Warp" games like D, enemy zero, D2 are masterpieces in my opinion👌👍 and I like to know more about some of the more odd games that I've never knew the names of? But only heard slightly of. I heard there is one game they made that works exclusively on sound design in order for you to play the game!? fascinating concept!
I *loved* Atlantis, =). If you read Lee Nutter's review in Official Sega Saturn Magazine, it's obviously he only played the first part of the game. Things do pick up and improve, and I've completed it about three times now. It is sucky in some regards, but I love the vibe. I'm not sure I can recommend it when a better PC version exists, however, there are some differences between PC and Saturn puzzles, than mean you can't always rely on the PC walkthrough when stuck on the Saturn. Some of the more confusing instances were clarified via posts I made on the Sega Saturn Forum website, back when I was playing it. In particular a cog/disc puzzle, and ...was it a crab racing mini-game or something? I forget now. It has been years. I should probably re-visit the game and record it for UA-cam though, =).
13:58 I like that you play Poland,beacuse i live there.And i like soccer.
The kart racer does look cool, I'm not sure if I've burned that one yet but it looks fun to try out
Tim Curry's Mary Shelley's Frankenstein: Through the Eyes of the Longest Title Ever. Lol
Nice review, I have most of these and yes Atlantis is painful frame rate and graphic wise.
It really is. Especially those characters.
Love your videos! Question, isn’t the intro song from Loaded, and not Astal?
The opening "SEGA" jingle is from Astal. ;)
Got it! I recognized the intro song right away, but couldn't put my finger on which game it was from. I didn't see it in the description, so I checked the credits and saw Astal. I thought, that couldn't be right, because I never played Astal. Then, I finally remembered the song was from Loaded, a game I played a lot on PS1 when I was younger. Thanks for the reply!
I tried to pick up Frankenstein, and at the time it was £35 on eBay, when I wanted it for under £20, so in the end I burned a CD-R of it... A bit silly of me to pass up the £35 version, now that it goes for £150, but I really was broke back then. Anyway, it starts off as a cool point and click adventure, but I felt let down, when I descended some a ladder to some sort of maze like area, where you had to work hard to remember how many turns and steps you'd taken, because every muddy wall looked example the same, and the graphics were very dark to boot. The pace of the game was good until I got lost wandering around in these areas, and I haven't picked the game up again since. I really ought to find a good guide, and get back to it. Although, again, with this PC game ports, it's tempting to go for the PC version which I guess has less muddy/dark graphics in that disorientating section I remember struggling with.
I had a friend who bought a Saturn in order to borrow games from me. He only ever bought three games himself - Sega Rally, Worldwide Soccer 98, and Formula Karts. I couldn't believe he bought Formula Karts - at £44.99 or possibly £49.99 even, XD. Wtf!? He seemed okay with it. I couldn't believe he'd bought it, XD.
wait, the radar at the bottom was cut off? how do i not remember that. and how did that get by testing
I love the discworld games! They are funny and very good and well acted
Jonah Lomu Rugby still the greatest rugby sim of alm time. Nothing ever came close imo.
What this basically means is most of these games have horrendous boxes that explode when you open them.
Interesting. I never knew that the PAL region had some exclusives.
I still have my demo of Swagman somewhere! Z I had a demo of for the PlayStation! I think I also had demos of World League Soccer 98, both for the Saturn and PlayStation!
How does playing a PAL game on a Japanese Saturn cause the bottom part of the screen to be missing? Is the refresh rate going too fast to be visible or something?
Different resolution
Hey. on the back of the MEGA 32X BOX there is a screenshot indicating that Atlantis was soon to be out for the 32x but I am not sure if it ever happened, there can be some issues of course of the elements on the move would work on a cartidge alone, I dont know.
None of the Saturn soccer games were good until Worldwide Soccer 97, then Worldwide Soccer 98, and then World League Soccer 98 took things up a notch, =).
Yes, I thought I had heard of Swagman on Saturn. In North America, it was on PlayStation. Also, Eyes of the monster probably would have been better if it was about Rocky Horror instead.
Love your channel
What a beautiful header from Alan Fucking Shearer!
Jonah Lomu Rugby is a good game. You are right about the AI, brutally difficult.
Z is such an amazing game, once you get the hang of it
Formula Karts is running way too fast on ntsc hardware. It's also kinda funny how it's one of the very few Saturn PAL exclusives which were actually designed for the video standard.
