Multi-million selling world music artist Méav teams up with Grammy award-winning producer Craig Leon (Blondie, Talking Heads, Ramones, Pavarotti) to record folk-pop album 'The Calling'.
One of the founding members of female supergroup Celtic Woman, Méav returns to her musical origins with 'The Calling', 12 tracks of newly written songs, folk ballads and fresh interpretations of timeless classics. 'The Calling', a contemporary pop treatment of new songs and folk classics from Ireland, England, Scotland, Brittany, Galicia and America, showcases Méav's crystal clear voice, elegantly fusing her Classical training with her folk roots.
Thank you for your comments. I can clarify that the melody of The Calling is traditional. Afonso did write words to the beautiful traditional melody but there is no connection between our lyrics and his. This is confirmed by his publishers. Hope you enjoy The Calling!
I must ask you to search a little bit more, because the composer of the original song is a Portuguese symbol and this can be very embarrassing for you. There's no problem in reinterpret Zeca Afonso, that's actually very flattering but please understand that you're dealing with a symbol. Zeca Afonso wrote many songs that were the result of his knowledge and research on traditional portuguese music and that might be fooling you into the wrong path... Hopefully you'll correct this miss understanding. Check the album: “Galinhas do Mato”. Thank you.
Thank you Inés. I assure you that I have researched this in great detail and there is no misunderstanding. Zeca Afonso recorded Tu Gitana but he did not write either the words or the melody.
Meav Ni Mhaolchatha This song, music and lirics, is a old portuguese song of our Elvas Songbook. (near 1570). But you change the liric. However you say is traditional. From where?
José Afonso was the first to put this song in a record. And your interpretation is like the Jose Afonso did. Can you explain this?
however your song is very beautifull too.
Actually the music (not the lyrics) is by José Afonso (Zeca Afonso), though some arrangements have been done in Luar na Lubre's celtic version. There's evidence in this excerpt of an interview ( www.aja.pt/ficheiros/entrevistas/entrevistaviriatoteles.pdf ) given by Zeca Afonso in 1985 (I'm sorry it is not translated to english):
As far as I know there's no reason to think that he was lying. Anyway, this is just a historical matter and I don't think Zeca Afonso would give a damn about it. Let me just say that the lyrics of 'Tu Gitana' are in spanish, although it's geographical origin is within portuguese territory (quite near to border of Spain). Hope I have helped to clarify all this controversy.
"Afonso did write words" - WRONG!!!
"traditional melody" - WRONG!!!
"there is no connection between our lyrics and his" - NOT IMPORTANT!!!
What I saw Méav answer is that the music was traditional and not written by her. Those of you still on that kick should give that up. As for the lyrics, she answered that too. It was collaborated by the group listed on the CD (which she is one), not anyone else. It was not taken from anyone else or from any other language. It is a haunting melody and HER lyrics fit the tone of the music beautifully.
Thought I'd write. Meav, you are a dear lady. my dear friend so far away. This song, like everything she does, IS HER MUSIC. This I know beyond any doubt. I guess their are some pinheads that feel otherwise. They know nothing. only hate. It's a shame. But those of us, that do know you dear lady, will ALWAYS be here to your defense. God bless, and please take care. Sincerely yours, Glenn A.K.A. The rotten Rebel. 1-27-14.

To know the old “Tu Gitana” song (XVI century), type (on Google) “musica no tempo das caravelas uff”, and then choose track 3. Totally different from “The Calling”, music or lyrics, but it’s her grandmother! Congratulations to Méav for her classy English lyrics, but if you believe the music is traditional why is it not credited as such, just like “Shenandoah” and three other songs in her album, but instead claimed by Craig Leon and Cassell Webb?
Comfort music.

Meav and her producer used a Traditional Melody and set it to their words making a very beautiful song this is not unusual and has been done to many other melodies. Nor have they stole it from someone else. Meav has produced a very beautiful song. This will go far in this form as with the album that was released last year. This year Meav has won best female Vocalist at the 2013 Irish Music Awards and I would not be surprised to see her nominated for best CD next year she is also high on various Bill Boards and is a top performer world wide.

Beautiful version! But I’ve heard that this song is credited to Cassell Webb, Craig Leon and Méav, which can only be a mistake. The lyrics are new, but not the music. Contrary to some comments on this page, it is not a cover of “Tu Gitana” (“You Gipsy”) by the Galician group Luar Na Lubre (more widely known through their collaboration with Mike Oldfield), though, because this was already a cover, made in 1997.

very beautiful but this music isn't yours... Zeca Afonso was a portuguese songwriter and he wrote this music in 80's...

So many paths not taken
So many words unsaid
Though I travel far, they bind me
In a web of golden thread
Ooh ooh ooh ooh... Ooh ooh ooh...
Ooh ooh ooh ooh.. Ooh ooh ooh...
I can hear a far-off calling
As the water flows ahead
I am waiting for the river-man
In the hidden riverbed
On the bank, three women passing
They measure time for me
In the mirror of the water
They can but darkly see
I will walk beyond the meadows
With a child in either hand
Through the river’s many shadows
We will pass from land to land
Ooh ooh ooh ooh.. Ooh ooh ooh...
Ooh ooh ooh ooh.. Ooh ooh ooh...
All the promises unspoken
Lie like fallen leaves on the ground
But the thread is still unbroken
And the hidden may be found
When the wheeling birds are leaving
They pass the sinking sun
We will travel with the river-man
Until time and time is run.
Ooh ooh ooh ooh... Ooh ooh ooh...
Ooh ooh ooh ooh... Ooh ooh ooh...
Ooh ooh ooh ooh... Ooh ooh ooh...

Yes...Sweet Lady Meav has many vocal gifts. Flawless technique and effortless style and an incredible and facile range are among her other attributes . Who else has watched this at least a dozen times ?
I know that if we Americans were exposed to Meav's music (radio, video shows, etc.) she would be hugely popular over here too. I have to believe that many, many people would prefer her to Miley, Gaga, Beyoncé, et al.

Lyrics are from Cancioneiro de Elvas [ 1526 ].
Both portuguese.

Actually the melody is traditional and is from Galicia and comes from circa 1470 AD.
rcuk1 Actually the melody is portuguese and does not come from galicia, it comes from Portugal in a time when we still spoke old portuguese
Good interpretation of a Portuguese song from José Afonso (suited mention the source) ...
Meav is not human. She is a Celtic goddess, transported from a bygone era to deliver these soul-soothing ballads to us mere mortals.
Nice COVER but shame on them for not crediting the original songwriter. Here he is:
Composer: José Afonso
Song: Tu Gitana
Country: Portugal
***** Yo no sabia que en Galicia también se cantava esta bela melodia; gracias pela información, Nicole.
***** PS: aqui ficam as líricas em galaico-português (fui pesquisar):

This song is portuguese one and is author is José Afonso and it was recorded in 1985.... why you dont say that on this video?
LeoMOV god stop being so mean the lyrics is tottaly different 😑😑😑😑
If it is true that José Afonso didn’t claim the copyright on this music, well, I confess I’m totally puzzled!! By 1985, for those of us familiar with the old song, mostly choir members, it was a huge surprise when Afonso came out with this new and lovely melody over the same old lyrics! The song made a certain impact. There were no news of claims that the credits on the album were wrong, or that anyone had heard the tune before.
If it is true that Afonso didn't claim the copyright then there is a reason. May the people who are claiming it for him, in spite of his refusal to do so stop claiming it now. Shame on you all. Pigs and Fascists!!!!!!
rcuk1
But it’s false. I now know, beyond any doubt, that José Afonso did the trivial thing for any songwriter: just as he established the authorship of the new music of “Tu Gitana” in the credits of the album (as we all know), he also established the copyright. I must acknowledge something went really wrong with the PRS database you mention, and I’m not blaming the PR Society, I don’t know who’s to blame. Well, now just let justice follow its rightful course.
The only “traditional” thing in 1985’s “Tu Gitana” is… its FLAVOR (the XVI century “Elvas Songbook”, discovered in 1928 and published only in 1940, is a matter for specialists and choirs; the new music is by José Afonso). Afonso’s unbelievable talent to create many simple and marvelous melodies with a traditional flavor was in fact a singularity of his, a trademark. How did he manage to do it? These things have no explanation. He was a genius.
O seu a seu dono...Isto é a mesma versão de "Tu gitana" de José Afonso sem qualquer dúvida!
I don't care, gonna come out and say it. Meav is damn hot, smokin hot.
Sounds too much like Enya.
Received this cd by mail a few days ago. Very nice.
this song simply belongs to late Zeca Afonso - all life long portuguese author/singer/composer, a resistance troubadour & a simbol of all fighters for freedom and Democracy during the colonial war and half century dictatorship of Salazar. Even the orchestration is similar, but Zeca has done it some 25 years befoe! BEWARE!

Beautiful. Just such a beautiful interpretation. I recognize the melody from the Galician group Luar na lubre which I also love.
You only recognise it because Luar na Lubre made a cover, and assumed it as such, of José Afonso's "Tu Gitana" Unfortunately, this is plagiarism of the original song "Tu Gitana" by José Afonso. Listen to it and you'll see. Credit where credit is due! Maev should seek copyright licence
Definitely, this portuguese music, in english language, sounds better! Great voice Méav!!!
Congratulations Meav. Looking forward to your concert on Wed 23rd Oct in the Sugar Club, Dublin to launch your new album The Calling!
i just can't stop listening to this. It is so angelic and enchanting.
beautiful!
if I can buy the cd in Holland, I absolutely will do that
we all are older and its natural process, and there is only ona direction... death waiting... but Meav by she's music is... true immortal
just like anything and everything else I have ever heard from Meav....ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOVE YOU MEAV.....
