TKS Iyengar’s must-visit for authentic Iyengar dishes. Three Generations Family Recipes, Vegetarian, No Garlic, Unique Homestyle Dishes, bale elle idli, thatte idli, classic idli, nuchinna unde, puliyogare, ottu shavige, god halubai, hayagreeva, sweet pongal, bangalore, breakfast
This recent entrant to Bengaluru’s vegetarian dining landscape located in the suburb of Basaveshwaranagar serves up Iyengar homestyle fare. Food Lovers’ Editor, Kripal Amanna visits this eatery for a late breakfast where he tastes an array of dishes, some hitherto unseen in restaurants, such as the Nuchinna Unde, Halubai, Hayagreeva (originally prepared as a temple offering), Ottu Shavige and more. He also meets the three generations of the TKS Iyengar family that is seeking to share its interesting culinary traditions with the people of Bengaluru though this endearing enterprise. Enjoy!
Bale Elle Idli
The Bale Elle Idli carries with it the subtle aroma of the banana leaf in which it is steamed. The leaf also imbues the idli with a light colouring. You bite into the crunch of coconut and the lentils as you taste the idli, savour it with the sambar that’s perfect in its sour-sweet balance and the spirited chutney. Rs. 30 (usd 0.4) for 2 pcs
9/10
Thatte Idli
A deliciously delicate thatte idli, springy like it should be. Acts as the perfect canvas of sorts to soak up the flavours of the chutney and sambar.
Rs. 30 (usd 0.4) for 2 pcs
8.5/10
Classic Idli
Grainy in texture and porous, but pales in comparison to the bale elle and thatte idli served here.
Rs. 12 (usd 0.2)
7/10
Nuchinna Unde
If you need only one reason to visit TKS Iyengar, these steamed dumplings made of four lentil varieties would be it. A traditional Iyengar recipe wouldn’t use onions, but these are added here due to the wants of running a commercial establishment, which lends it a delightful crunch alongside the lentils. Rs. 30 (usd 0.4) for 2 pcs
10/10
Puliyogare
Cooked and cooled rice, flavoured with spicy tamarind paste and fortified with the crunch of lentils and ground lentils, this is a Iyengar classic with the perfect balance of flavours - touch of sweet that gives into sour and the warmth of the spices. The puliyogare here is made with red rajamudi rice from Hassan.
Rs. 50 (usd 0.7)
9/10
Ottu Shavige
This sweet and ‘khaara’ combo is served with ella pudi (a powder made of sesame seeds, peanuts and jaggery) gasgase (poppy seed) payasa and a nutty, spicy chutney, enlivened with mustard oil and red chillies.
Rs. 60 (usd 0.8)
9/10
Godhi Halubai
Made with puree of wheat, coconut milk and jaggery, this wobbly pudding like dessert magically disappears into sweet ‘nothingness’ when you place a piece in your mouth.
Rs. 10 (usd 0.15)
8/10
Hayagreeva
Taste the creaminess of lentils and the bite of dried coconut and cashew nuts in this decadently sweet dessert that was originally made as an offering to Lord Hayagreeva.
Rs. 50 (usd 0.7)
8.5/10
Sweet Pongal
The whiff of edible camphor that greets you on the palate disappears quickly into the background, leaving you to relish the milky richness of this rice and lentil dessert.
Rs. 50 (usd 0.7)
8/10
Coffee
Nice way to end things after an indulgent meal here.
Rs. 10 (usd 0.15)

I love our kannadigans traditional food. Pulogire is our signature rice of our state. Proud to be kannadiga
Mr.Kripal, it's great to see that you are covering all type of traditional Karnataka cuisine which is very ancient and and good to see owners are continuing the same traditional way for cooking. Thanks for sharing .
I stayed in Basaweshwara Nagar in last week of July 2019. Ate here everyday. Googled for it and landed here. Didn’t know that it opened in July 2019. Superb food.

Wow! The food is so diverse and amazing across India! I'm half-Indian and half Canadian and I am currently on a path in discovering my Indian side of heritage, culture, vegetarian cuisine and absolutely love the Hindu dharma. I can't get enough of how healthy, sustainable & eco-friendly the food looks! I'll be coming to Bengaluru soon and this is definitely on my bucket list! Thank you for posting such awesome content! Namaste!
I hope you have a good experience at Namma Bengaluru
God bless you.
Their kannada tastes well and dishes look welcoming... a must visit place after lockdown
It's literally two birds one stone kind of vlogs he has been uploading since the first vlog. The thing is , one who is a vocabulary entusiast can't help watch his vlogs and what if he is also a foodie. What a combo!
I love traditional looking eateries than the modern one's ,I love the old world charm, actually food cooked in traditional vessels tastes good and is healthy too
Visited this restaurant today. It was really nice. Had Menthia dosa, vada & vathu shavige. Extremely delicious. Worth more visits to taste all other items in the menu. Really tasty
Miss my Bengaluru and our culture from Newyork😘
I feel very proud about Iyengars, They r completely assimilated in the Karnataka society completely, Many Iyengars talk Kannada even in home, They have contributed to Karnataka in many ways, starting from BKS Iyengar, the Yoga legend to Masthi Venkatesha Iyengar, the Legend of Karnataka literature who got us one Jnanapitha award and another legend G P Rajaratnam, one of the finest Kannada poet who has written in a poem "even if u send me to hell and cut my tongue, I'll breath Kannada with my nose" ...there are many legends, we r proud of u and undoubtedly u r Kannadigas like us...
Karnataka most Indian place in àll of India

Thanks for sharing authentic South Indian cuisine .
This has to be one of my favourite episodes! The food, the utensils, and the simplicity is so refreshing! Loved it! 🙏🏽
Im in Canada right now, can't wait to come back to India to try all these dishes again!
Much love to your team!
Where in Canada.
These are very simple dishes, in every South Indian home these items are prepared , and they use tamarind to clean the brass vessels to shine. We can learn from you tube recipes also .All items are available in Indian grocery stores
Camphor flavor is very good in telugu its pacha karpuram it gives very good aroma flavor to the prasadhams(naivedhyalu)
Your description of Hayagreeva...deserves a great salute.....and pranaams🙇🙇🙇🙇
Superb review of this restaurant. Kripal, you are a true food connoisseur! You explain the tones, the ingredients and preparation incredibly well, but the way you taste it and explain how your taste buds explode to the thunder of flavor as the food washes past your tongue is what I always look forward to. Your eyes are in sync with the flavor and taste you savor... awesome 👏🏽. Glad to see people taking time to cook things on slow burn and incorporating traditional cooking practices, wholesome ingredients prepared from scratch. I think there was zero processed food or ingredient in anything you ate. I’m so glad not to see plastic, foam plates, plastic spoons and neon signs ....brass plates, banana leaf and watching steam come off the food makes this magical... you are a lucky man !
When I hear name Iyengar..!! it Reminds me Honey Cake 🍰 From Iyengar Bakery😋😋
Iyengar's Cusine's(especially puliogere) have Separate Fanbase in Karnataka💛❤️
I wish to visit Bangaluru and enjoy all dishes of this restaurant really mouth watering

IYENGAR’s setting and surroundings transports us back into the first half of the last century. It’s indeed creditable that they maintain it the old fashioned way, including usage of all brass containers.
The Awesome Iyengars!
it's Wonderful watching that people are sustaining their own culture and traditions. Lots of respect 🙏

Hayagreeava !!!???
I heard it for first time in this video ! As a sweet fan, I Got excited with a new traditional sweet.
Then I googled, saw recipe videos, Its kadlebele Payasa !!!
Damn, my mother makes Hesarubele Payasa once a month at least. Just a different lentil, no difference in taste I felt.
Will give a try in this restaurant anyway, Thanks a lot.
Hayagreeva s consistency is different, not like a payasa. But hayagreeva fills u up faster than payasa
This is one of my favorite episodes, all dishes looked so mouth watering and the fact that they reprimand themselves from harsh utensils of Aluminium make this restaurant/eatery one of my favorite. I wish you all best of luck.
The tamba katoris r awesome. Host looks like young Mahesh bhatt. Delicious, realistically priced food.
Thanks to TKS IYENGAR'S KITCHEN.for the recipes for Ruchina oondai. I had tasted this at my friend's house at my early young age. Waiting fot that recipes . Thanks a lott for sharing

Traditional cuisines are priceless ! 👍💕
Every regional food was meant to be local, "Farm to Table", concept, while many foods travel along state lines it is best to eat locally produced and cooked food, this is good for climatic conditions and digests well when in that region. It is simple, clean and affordable. Eat Healthy and stay healthy!
Kirpal ji, mostly many other state persons like me does not know much about authentic Kannada foods, thanks for introducing to us... Next time when I visit Bengaluru i want to skip sagars and dharshinis and go for authentic local food.
