If you are like me and look like a seal-a-meal (a seal in a wet suit) you need to keep yourself out of the food chain. If you see seals or sea lions, this is a good indicator to remain out of the water. Sharks in general (I have swam with them) are not a problem. However, certain varieties of sharks such as: Bull sharks, Great Whites, Tiger sharks, Mako sharks, and Great Hammer Heads should be approached with caution. While Lemons, Nurse sharks, Whale sharks, and most Reef sharks are mostly safe to approach.
The variables are black tips, white tips, and some reef and sand sharks. They can be a bit unpredictable, so best plan and err on the safe side. I have swam into black tips, reef sharks, and some off shore sharks that I was unfamiliar with. My advice is to be careful and respect the fact that these are wild animals with a mind of their own. Don't become an ugly statistic. Respect the shark and do not become part of their food chain. They are not necessarily to be feared, but they should at least be respected and avoided when appropriate.
I have had brushes with sharks while swimming in open surf (Waikiki rough water swim) and at Port Angeles during the off season. The bottom line is, when in doubt, steer clear. I have seen the open jaws of a predator, and have swam away bravely (hauled ass out of the water). Be careful, and remember that these are wild animals and they do not care about statistics or what you believe about them. Be respectful and afraid when necessary.

I've read every single shark attack in the last 100 years and read most of the personal accounts of any of the survivors and one thing I noticed about the GW shark is that even the largest ones are super silent. So many of these stories I've read or seen the person attacked was derping around in the water without a care and just turns around and there's a huge shark right there on top of them looking at them and chomp. Like a horror movie.

Mr Fox is such a brave man , and I envy his ability to go through what he's gone through from being attacked and so close to death he was kissing it.... Then to build the nerve to go back in the water, and the courage to keep returnimg to the water... Unreal....It just terrifies me to even think about doing that. I've gone snorkling @ diving for lobster in the keys and as much a i enjoyed the beauty of the open ocen ,i spent the entire time praying i didn't get eaten. Then when we left the Mets we stopped at a shell shop @ they had a newspaper clipping where a fisherman had caught an 850 lb tiger shark the week before right where we'd spent the week diving.... it was beautiful horror...

Try swimming on top of the water if your boat capsizes and you need to swim to shore. When I was there in the Bahamas, the stories from the locals told some gruesome stories. Notice these guys are under the water where it's a bit safer. But telling us it's safe to swim with sharks is misleading and dangerous. If a shark bites you but don't like your taste still can be deadly and likely is deadly as you bleed to death.

Sharks are generally misunderstood by most people. But that doesn't mean that they aren't potentially very dangerous creatures. Sure, they don't actively hunt humans, but they are wild ocean predators, and as such, they can be unpredictable. They really aren't that smart either, and they have terrible eyesight as well. They have no idea what they are even biting most of the time, they are just biting it to see if its food. And from time to time, that might be a person, unfortunately. Any time you venture out into nature, whether its the ocean..the mountains..the forests and jungles..etc..you are taking on all the risks that come with being out in nature..including being out there with whatever predators that are in that particular environment. I know as a surfer, I'd rather share the water with sharks than with gators and crocs.

Killing sharks isn't about the fear of them. It's about economics. They're currently a valuable commodity so, they will be brutally & cruelly slaughtered, until the demand for their meat & other body parts ceases, eliminating the market for them. The U. S. alone slaughters & exports 40% of the world's sharks each year. Please note the lack of comment from the American government regarding the alarming & rampant worldwide slaughter of sharks. That's because our country is a huge participant in the disgusting finning & general murderous practices wiping out so many species of sharks!!! We're now a shameful shadow of the country we once were full of dark secrets & telling lies to the world. We have a self righteous government that lectures others & tells them to do as we say but not as we do. Other ppl no longer respect us due to the fact they're learning about the lies our government tells everyday while we remain blissfully ignorant & unwilling to hear the ugly truth, when it's finally told to us.
We actually supply 40% of the shark fins for which sharks are brutally slain. We even have restaurants in this country where shark fin soup is served. Disgusting & shameful. How can we expect the slaughter to stop, when we ourselves are leading participants?

He is an amazing man, for sure, and I’m very happy he lived to tell his tale. That said, I’m pretty much a chicken shit. I never learned to swim, so I’m terrified of water. But even if I could swim, you couldn’t pay me enough to go into an ocean in which sharks are prevalent. I respect them and don’t want them hurt because of human activity or predation, but watching documentaries like this is as close as I ever want to get to a shark.

It's definitely real. The question is whether or not it's still around. It definitely could be, either that or there is another exceedingly large, great white-like shark out there that hasn't been discovered yet.

When this occured in the early sixties, there was probably quite a a few huuuge sharks over there in Australia at that time. So, it stands to reason that killing all those fish in the contest probably was the catalyst for this horrible attack. If you go in the water in any ocean you can run into them. It's part of our responsibility to be sure not to exacerbate the situation and keep ourselves safe as possible. Personally I don't go in the ocean very often in the last thirty years. However the last time I went to Maui I swam every day and hung in the break, and now we know this isn't a good place to be cause that's where they hang out, and there are mostly Tiger sharks. They will eat anything supposably, so I don't see myself doing any of that behavior. Now that I know better . .😮

I live local and I always think maybe they give birth in the waters around kangaroo island where there is plenty of seals for the young pups to feed on after the adult mother great whites give birth, and or the warm waters make a great breeding ground.
