- Colonel Jim Corbett was still fairly young and inexperienced when he was called upon to go after the Muktesar Man-Eater.
The small town of Muktesar (now the hill resort town of Mukteshwar) in the Kumaon region of the Himalayan foothills of India situated in the modern-day state of Uttarakhand and in the beautiful and well-wooded Ramgarh Valley, was the setting in the year 1910 when a wounded tigress develops a taste for human flesh.
Corbett writes with great skill, building up the atmosphere with a sense of dread, and what follows is a fast-paced and gripping work of narrative non-fiction that transports you smack dab in the middle of the action, more than a hundred years ago.
This narration is dedicated to the loving memory of Mr. Andre Leon Ducasse of St. Joseph's College, Prayagraj (1963-2017), an exemplary academic who memorably read this story aloud to us one fine day in 6th grade.

I went to boarding school in Nainital in the 1950s. In those days all the teachers were still British, except for the sanskrit and sitar teachers. Jim Corbett was still alive in those days and a living legend, a hero to us schoolboys. We were spellbound as the teacher read to us the Maneaters of Kumaon. In about October the weather used to change and we could see the snow on the high peaks, including the Nanga Parbhat. In 1959 there was a sudden influx of Tibetans, we learnt later that this was due to the Chinese invasion of Tibet. At night we could hear jungle animals, there were still plenty in those days. It is mindboggling to see how the world has changed for the worse, indeed it has gone mad, at least in the west. Ah for those tranquil bygone days. Thanks for this podcast, brings back so many memories.

Also I'd like to say that a distance relative of mine, his grandparents knew Jim Corbett personally. These folks had owned properties up in Abbott mount. Which still stands today.

the way you read these stories you put me in the jungle next to corbett this man was a true legend
Loved it and thank you. Reads like a thriller. Except it really happened. I liked how Corbett mostly hunted with a good purpose and never glorified hunting as an exercise in slaughter.
An early example of public relations by animal killers, like Clyde Beatty, the famous tiger trainer who antagonized and obviously terrorized his tigers. His methods were eventually criticized by the public and the circus went to what they called European style animal training, where the tigers were only or mostly hit and whipped during backstage training sessions and appeared more cooperative during performances.
I also recall the story of Frank Buck, the animal dealer who bragged about punching out an Orangutan, calling it a fair fight! After the ape had been terrorized by capture from his or her forest home. Orangutans are endangered now as well and being captured for ownership and their forests stolen by the palm oil business, whose cheap oil is found an enormous amount of processed foods in the United States.
@@kellytansy6850 That's interesting, I just looked up Clyde Beatty. I mean aren't most animals terrorized at most circuses? That's how they get wild animals to perform these acts right. Through torture and fear!

I have read all of Jim Corbett's books over and over since I was 10 years old. It's nice to finally learn how to correctly pronounce the names and places where these stories take place.

One of the finest narrations, I haven't picked up the book because your narration took me to Mukteshwar back again!!! Recently when lockdown was opened, I visited Sonapani and Mukteshwar and saw The Veterinary Institute, Post Office and Temple. I was took back to Mukteshwar by listening to this!!! Just amazing brother!!! Loved it!!! And Thanks for posting this, I wanted this from such a long time, this is perfect 😊😊😊😊

I went to Himachal Pradesh in my youth and also parts of the South. But I was too young to gain any more than a superficial understanding from the experience except that India was a vast and varied place. These stories make me want to return to India and understand the people, landscape and country even more. Or at least educate myself more. Nothing to do with hunting.

Has anyone ever wondered where Tolkien got the inspiration for Aragorn? I think it's quite evident now that no one but Jim Corbett could have been the real life ranger, warrior and yet the humble unproclaimed king of the people of a mountainous region. Corbett is the real life Aragorn.

UA-cam's latest policy is that they will play ads on videos even if the creator doesn't want them. Please look this up. So short of turning it off completely, I can't do much about it. Alternatively, you can always use an ad blocker but that really hurts the creator.

These true man-eater stories are exciting and well narrated, I really enjoyed them. Why are there dozens of man-eater tiger and leopard stories though, what happened in India.
Just a consequence of human-animal conflict that sped up in the last century or so. Wild animals have always preyed on humans whenever they've gotten a chance. And still do in some parts of the world.
Jim must have been pretty scared to launch one into a pitch black night like that. Understandable being a young Hunter and all, can't say I'd have done anything different without hindsight.

Thanks for your comment. There are plenty of books on shikar and hunting but JH Patterson and Peter H Capstick come to mind as far as man-eaters go. Hugh Allen's Lonely Tiger is also excellent, but it's about jungle adventure stories in general.

I know I wasn’t asked, but in the realm of fiction Geoffrey Household wrote that edge of the seat, scary as hell thriller entitled Dance of the Dwarfs. Set it in South America. All the elements of a Jim Corbett story are there, in spades. Well, except one. You’ll see.

I've heard you mention an animal several times, it sounds like you're saying cocker. What kind of animal is that? I've been assuming it's some kind of monkey

The animal you mention is a 'kakar', or an Indian muntjac at 22:02. Also known as the barking deer, they are very alert and a reliable source of information in an Indian jungle along with langur monkeys, the larger Sambhar deer, chital deer (spotted deer), and other species of deer depending on where you are in India.
In the forests of the Terai and Bhabar, where Corbett lived and hunted, along the foothills of the Himalayas in the Sivalik range where nearly all of his stories are based, Sambhar and Kakar are plentiful and so you will hear them being mentioned often.

What ever happened to the movie made of the man eaters .I have look high and low for that movie but can only find it on a disk that I can not use .I would like to find it on cd.

A couple of ads in q long narration is fair but if you're seeing more than 2 ads in a 48 minute video then it is something that the platform itself has decided to insert. I remember reading a book by this guy many years ago, a really horrible story when people were more ignorant about wild animals and their ecosystems and saw nothing wrong with exterminating them.
Of course many people still have no problem destroying wildlife and ecosystems. We now have literally thousands of tigers kept in private homes and zoos that have no conservation value and can never repopulate the wild, with wild tigers numbering in the mere hundreds while ecosystems are decimated for factory farms, lumber, pet owners, zoos, and humans who want to cover the earth with cement.
He was actually one of the first persons to raise a voice for Tiger Conservation, along with FW Champion. He even has a tiger reserve named in his honour now, the "Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve".
Tigers need hunting now there should be a open season couple weeks a year with mybe 10 tags have to buy and hope to win 10 tigers a year would help the overcrowding that's helping cause the many maneaters in India now and put some fear of man back in the tigers which would also help and would bring much money into the local economy

The book is originally written in English and so an English narration is a logical outcome. I do hope and wish someone does it in Hindi and other languages as well. Thank you for your comment.
