    Grieg's A minor Concerto served as the model for the original version of this Concerto: in fact, the Grieg was Rachmaninoff's favorite Piano Concerto. The original version of the Rachmaninoff has been recorded.

    Wonderful video again. Fantastic series. Didn’t know this concerto. That second movement is both ravishing and wonderfully strange. Very impressionistic. The opening of the second movement is very like the opening of Tristan und Isolde, rising chromatic scales landing on surprising chord each time. Fascinating.

    Ah, Rach! Sublime yearning at its best in this concerto!
    Yes, this is a revision of the original, but I can still hear the masterful themes and treatment that Rach seemed to be born with.
    I have always heard that great composers do not sit at the piano and allow their hands to limit the development of their compositions,
    but all of Rach seems to be about "noodling at the piano" and the excellence of his ideas and themes.
    Yes, even his masterpiece: the Second Symphony sounds pianistic. Rach, the piano, the world!

      Yes. If you read the wikipedia page about this concerto, you'll find that Rach was fond of it.
      "Composition students were usually advised to base their efforts on a specific model for their first exercises in new forms. In Rachmaninoff's case this was the Grieg Piano Concerto, which was a favorite work of his and one which he had been familiar from Siloti practicing it at the Rachmaninoff household during the spring and summer of 1890 for future concerts. Rachmaninoff adapted the entire musical structure of the outer movements to the Grieg concerto, literally building his music into it. With all his other concertos, Rachmaninoff would prove more enterprising."

    I enjoy Prokofievs first piano concerto more than this one. I feel it has more artistical vision for being a first concerto at a young age. I've always felt that Prokofiev is more original and more musically talented than Rach even though I love some of Rachs work as well. There is just something about Prokofiev that is out of this world. Hate to compare but they were active during roughly the same time and Prokofiev just had a very fresh different new take on music, while I feel Rachmaninoff was perfecting the romantic music we already know, but with less originality.

    • @thepianocornertpc
      @thepianocornertpc 3 роки тому +4

      From a pure pianistic point of view, Rachmaninov's music has much more to offer. To me, Prokofiev's music feels a bit like it's "deliberately constructed". Rachmaninov is just flow, flow and more flow. I do like both composers a lot.

    • @aidanm.1683
      @aidanm.1683 3 роки тому +2

      rachmaninoff was a romantic composer
      prokofiev was something completely new (contemporary)
      imo Rachmaninoff is the peak of romanticism.
      Prokofiev is chopin of contemporary music imo
      So you're right Prokofiev was definitely something new

    • @specialperson335
      @specialperson335 3 роки тому +2

      @@aidanm.1683 but not only was he something new because of the new style (modernism) but also because his own musical vision is quite different to many other modernists. Most modernists are very different to eachother, for example Bartok, Ravel, Shostakovich and Prokofiev sound completely different when compared to eachother. So Prokofiev isnt just a modernist, his own unique musical vision was incredibly strong and unique. A prime example of this is his third piano concerto. So argument being that i feel that Prokofiev is more unique and original of course compared to modernists than rachmaninoff is compared to other romantic composers.

    • @Whatismusic123
      @Whatismusic123 2 роки тому +1

      you may prefer it, however, prokofiev is incredibly incompetent at writing harmony and melody, nevermind form. his first concerto is objectively bad in almost every aspect. being more original may make it easier for you to emotionally attach yourself to the piece, but other than that, it is completely worthless. Rach's 1st concerto is amazing, prokofiev's is a mistake.

      @@specialperson335 unique this, unique that. he'a not good. he needs to be good for hisnuniqueness to matter, most of the time, what makes him "unique" is musical mistakes.

      Keep playing it. It will grow on you. All 4 of his concertos are terrific and while critics and customers both have plugged 2 and 3 over the years, 1 and 4 have plenty of great ideas, expositions, etc to go around the room. I love 'em all. I do tend to agree with those who like the revised version but the original is very nice too. If you come across it don't pass it by. 4 also exists in a revised version but again the original is very nice too.
