Thank you very much for this video. I love Northern Gannets! One of my favorite birds that I have never photographed. I'd love to visit this location one day. Please make more video like this. I think combining landscape and wildlife photography is a natural thing to do and will enhance your channel. Best to you, Kim!
That is such a beautiful place. It was cool seeing the bird nesting on the cliff. You were able to get some amazing shots. Thank you for taking us out into nature!
Hi Kim, your patience paid off, you got some great shots. That mist just looked like a tsunami approaching in slow motion. Thanks for sharing. All the best..........Peter.
I haven't the patience to take wildlife shots. Animals know I'm watching them and turn their backs on me. However you have got some great images. Patience is key. Well done
Thanks Paul - I agree that wildlife photography requires a lot of patience. I used to really struggle but learnt to enjoy and appreciate it over the years. You never know - you might get into it one day :)
Again, a wonderful experience seeing this video. I didn't know, that gannets have a colony on the mainland of Scotland. Thanks for the info. I have been to a similar looking place, also in Aberdeen shire, Fowlsheugh RSPB south of Stonehaven. No gannets there, but plenty of razorbills, kittwakes, guillemots and some puffins to photograph. Your pictures of the gannets are very good, I especially like the one at 9:44. Keep on doing both, landscape and wildlife photography. Not uncommonly, they can (or even should) be combined. Sadly, my plans for Scotland in may had to be cancelled. But now I have even more time to plan my next, hopefully much longer journey. So please keep giving me some inspiration :)
Thank you very much! Troup is a definite must if you like your gannets. Yes, Fowlsheugh is absolutely amazing and I can't wait to spend some time there myself this summer. Thats a shame that your Scotland trip has been cancelled but I hope you manage to reschedule it and have a wonderful time when it comes :)
Good morning Kim, fab video as always. Makes a nice background to Sunday breakfast. the shots of the birds our fantastic and as far as one can tell pin sharp well. The mist rolling in from the sea was amazing watching it develop can't wait until the next episode to see your photos Thanks again for all you hard work for bring use realgood and informitive videos
Wow, the only time I've seen mist rolling in from the sea like that was on the Pacific coast in California (where it's very frequent). And some beautiful Gannet portraits too!
Thank you Kim you have made me very happy with your last two videos I love getting out and about wandering and seeing wildlife then trying to capture them. So it was lovely to see you doing the same and really enjoying yourself. You got some nice images of the birds and that mist was amazing:D Teddy
loving your videos, but when I saw your gannet photos I thought wow, there tack sharp, and we know how hard it is to photograph birds and you have nailed it ..... keep on posting
Hi Kim great video, Loved the images of the gannets. I spent 3hours on the Bass Rock a few years ago taking images of gannets an experience I will never forget the sights , the sounds the smells awsome. Another bird that is up there with the gannet in my opinion is the puffin. A trip to the Isle of Lunga near Mull is well worth it. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Thank you - I've always dreamt of going to Bass rock (maybe next year). Also was hoping to go to Lunga island this summer but looks unlikely now. I've heard its amazing - thanks again :)
A jammed packed episode with a bit of a hike, some lovely images and a crazy finish. I'd say you had a good day and so did we. The gannet images were "crackin"!
Good morning Kim, fab vlog as always. Really stunning coastline. You shot some wonderful images of the sea birds, wow! I love how you immerse yourself in your surroundings & enjoy it so much just taking it all in. Sights & sounds are breathtaking in nature. And that mist that was rolling in is just so atmospheric 😊
Great photos!!! You outdid yourself Kim. Your enthusiasm is so contagious, I've decided to travel to Scotland, Inverness and Isle of Sky, to hopefully take some amazing landscape photos. Unfortunately I won't be going to Aberdeenshire. If anyone has some tips or recommendations for photography on the Isle of Skye, please feel free to reply
Thank you very much Robert. Have a wonderful time when you come here - the Isle of Skye is all stunning so just drive around and snap to your hearts content! You won't be disappointed :)
Great content once again Kim. Your Gannet images were spot on, good on the details of the bird. Can't wait for your next vid for the mist making land. PS: Don't get too close to the edge, my heart was in my mouth as you peaked over
What a wonderful sight to see that fog bank rolling in... almost like a slow motion Tsunami. I was loving it and then right at the point it was rolling up the cliffs.. you disappeared ... vanished... gone... 🤤🤤🤤 is this a cliff hanger ending or wot? 😁 great images and vid Kim. All the best.
They were some brilliant ganet pictures Kim. Back in the 70s and 80s my dad was on ocean tankers and he got some brilliant photos of the ships approching mist banks in the middle of large oceans. It is a specticle to watch.
Lovely images as usual, have seen this mist many times but not like here in Bulgaria, on a hot summers day, when just the two of us on a lovely sandy beach, and it swept in, covered around 40 miles of coast line, one of the strangest yet lovely weather events you could see
I loved the vlog, what a sight those gannets looked. My camera is Nikon D300s ...I would love a prime lens like the 300 or 400 mm but as you say they are not cheap, you could try a teleconverter on the 300mm you have...cant wait for the misty vlog...martin
Hi Kim... photographically speaking, this is one of your better shoots to date from my perspective. You are well on your way to becoming a self professed " Naturalist " and a budding " Wildlife Photographer "... It looks like you are using a 300 mm prime, very nice... If you decide to further yourself in this genre further down the road, take a look at the 400 mm primes by Nikon. I use Canon crop cameras & use a EF 400 mm f/5.6L USM on most, but not all my wildlife shooting. ( Canon 1.6 x 400 = 640 mm ) ( Nikon 1.5 x 400 = 600 mm )... The gannet shots are very well done & worthy of praise. You have focused tack sharp on the all important " eyes " on these birds, the rest takes care of itself, easier said than done however! I also can't help but acknowledge that you have composed them very nicely in that you have created a nice negative space where the bird is looking, again, easier said than done, very well done. These kind of images are what inspire me to get back out there and try to better myself even more the next time... In summary, wildlife photography is a genre in of itself but shares elements of landscape composition at the same time, making it a real challenge to come away with some genuine " keepers " aka, money shots... ( even if you never sell them )... Best, Bill Farr... Vermont, USA... :-)
Hello Bill - thank you very much for your kind words. Really appreciate the time you've put into your comment. Id love a bigger lens for wildlife but they aren't cheap. I hope to own one one day though. Also thanks for your kind comments with regards to composition etc. I think I was just very very lucky on the day to get what I got. Was surprisingly happy with them when I got home. Love it when that happens. Thanks again :)
If I lived there I would wander daily...such beauty...that coastline seems to go on and on...serious eye candy and soul filling..so peaceful ...what beautiful birds almost as if they had been painted those striking colors incredible images Kim...I saw a seagull colony once in Nova Scotia in the Southern area ...eggs were everywhere...I almost felt like an intruder in their little world... some say the shoreline resembles Scotland ...especially the Cape Breton area...incredible if you ever have the chance seeing whales everywhere ....actually coming up to your boat...what lens were you using may I ask...handheld?
Thank you Isabella - it truly is a stunning place to visit. Wow whales coming up to the boat sounds incredible! The lens was the Nikkor 70-300mm and yes I shot all the images handheld
Nice vlog Kim - apart from suggesting I wade through your vlogs, can you recommend a quick itinerary for a three day trip around fort William and the isle of skye. I’m heading to Europe from New Zealand in August and want to include three or four full days in Scotland. Have always wanted to do man of stor, but looking for some great landscape / waterfall locations. Thank you
Thanks Steve - you'll be spoilt for choice with those locations and with only 3 days to explore them - its hard to narrow down the locations to ensure you see the best! All the famous places on Skye are well worth a visit. If its waterfalls you want Kilt Rock is a quick and simple stop between the famous old man of Storr and Quirang. Elgol is also well worth a visit on Skye but you must ensure you pick a day mist free (otherwise the gorgeous view might not be seen). There is plenty of lovely places around Fort William. There is a really cool waterfall called Steall Waterfall near there. If you check out Matthew Storer's video entitled "Scotlands best waterfall...." you can check it out and see what you think before going. There is also a few beautiful smaller waterfalls on the road down to that one. Enjoy your time in Scotland - you will love it! Oh and if you're going to Fort William - you'd might as well check out Glencoe while you're at it (or at least drive the famous road through it. Hope all this helps you a little bit in your planning :)
Those are fantastic images. As I said about your last vlog, I suspect a stock agency would love to have them available. Also, what is the name you were using for that fog bank? "Seahar"…? Never heard that used before. I can tell you that, whenI visited San Francisco, a fog bank like that rolling in off the Pacific happened almost every late afternoon in summer.
Thanks and sea haar. Never realised till now but its a Scottish word for "sea fog". You can read more about it in the link below: caledonianmercury.com/2011/04/29/useful-scots-word-haar/0018917
Great pictures and they are beautiful birds . I live in Gibraltar and we get all the migration of birds as they fly over from Africa back to Europe and vice a versa could i ask what cam and lens where you using today
Hi Kim, I hope you're well. I love the shots of the Gannets, I think they're spot on and that mist coming in is really spooky. I've actually seen something like that before but nowhere near as thick as that is! It reminds me of a horror movie "The Fog" (have you watched it?) Thanks for yet another very enjoyable vlog Kim, they're always something to look forward to. (Did you give it some thought about adding the camera settings at all?) Until the next one, take care and stay safe x 👍📷
Thanks again Paul! It was quite horror like. I think I have seen that film but will have to watch it again sometime I think :) I have thought about it _ I'm struggling a bit with time just now for editing vlogs so adding more info etc is hard at the present time. I do hope to do this soon though. I've just got my new laptop up and running smoothly so should manage to edit blogs quicker and easier in the coming months. Thanks again :)
hi kim, may i ask what gear you were using in the vid, i use a nikon D7100 and my only longish lens is the 70-300 f4.5-5.6 VR, i am very interested in what others think is a reasonable setup for birds, btw i really enjoyed your vid and the pics you got, im a beginner on a tight budget so hoping to learn as much as i can from others
Hello - I too have the Nikon D7100 and the 70-300mm lens so you too can create great images :) Thank you for your kind words and you don't need expensive gear to get good images. Learning the techniques is what makes you improve .
The shot of the gannet taking flight is stunning (9:53). Congratulations on a great set of photos and thanks for sharing them with us.

Thank you very much Anthony. Point taken on board - I would like to do more wildlife so will see what comes up. Glad you enjoyed it :)
That is an amazing sight how cool is that. Some cool photos as well well done you. You were truly blessed can’t wait to next time
I really enjoyed that Kim, I have never seen the mist roll in over the sea like that and your Gannet pics were wonderful, all of them.
Thank you very much Brenda! In part 2 the mist gets better and better!
Beautiful birds indeed. Thanks for sharing!
And I can't wait to make some time to watch the next video. That weather does look amazing.
That is such a beautiful place. It was cool seeing the bird nesting on the cliff. You were able to get some amazing shots. Thank you for taking us out into nature!

Hi Kim, some nice shots of the Gannets. Apart from Puffins, these are my favourite sea bird. Love watching them dive to catch the fish.
