Cheers Jordan, Laurent here (last mix). Thank you so much for reviewing my mix and for all the interesting advice given in this video (and all the others)! The reason for having that much effects here is that the guitarist uses an MXR reverb pedal that generates lower and upper octave harmonics. He puts a ton of it in his tone, and since it is definitely part of the sound he is after, I left it in and tried to mix it with the reamped DI track to bring back some dry signal in. The amount of effects on vocals and drums was an attempt to keep them coherent with the wet guitars. Thanks again for your review!
Listen your song was by far the most interesting song. Not thinking about the the mix but the actual song writing. Really cool shoegaze late 80’s vibe. There some real potential there👌🏻
I thought the heavy reverb / effects on the last mix (Laurent) were more like an artistic/style choice than a mixing issue. I agree that a mix of the dry signal in with the wet can help keep some clarity and a desired heavily-effected sound. Sounds great.
@@stevengarrity2989 you're right Steve, the extreme reverb on the guitars here is how it sounds straight out from the amp, as wanted by the band. I tried to find the right amount of effect for the other elements of the mix to keep it coherent. As a non-pro mixer and new to Shoegaze style, pro feedback like Jordan's is priceless to me 🙏
Im really impressed how fast you guys can here problems in a mix. Im quite confident that I can deliver solid mixes, but I need quite some time time listening and playing around...
Thanks for reviewing another one of my mixes, Jordan. I feel like your input makes each successive mix better than the last. Always appreciate the constructive criticism and kindness!
this sax solo wants to sound like "Walk on the Wild Side" but it needs some treatment. Some nice reverb (and a little tape saturation after) would make it ace.
I enjoy the fact that your notes aren't just purely about mixing but also about production of the song. Its hard to be a good mixer without putting on a bit of the producer hat even if that's not technically your role within the project.
Been following you for a while and this has absolutely nothing to do about mixing or recording, but has anyone ever told you look like David Wallace from The Office? I think of you every he shows up in an episode😂 I can’t unsee it now😂
Thats still a lot of work to do. thank you so much for reviewing my mix🙏Your tips really helped. They also showed me, that my main problem is proper gain staging, which I overlooked while only focusing on the processing.
Track 3 was great. Very Deftones vibed. I think there was alot of problems with the low end/low mid frequencies across the whole mix. It could've also been a bit brighter overall. As stated, that cymbal volume needs to come way down. But damn, what a cool track.
To the mixer/producer of track 3, clearing up some of the mud from the effects may be easier to control by high-passing the verb sends. It's usually referred to as the "Abbey Road" tip and it's been really useful in my productions. You can do this on delays, reverbs, just about any effects that are on sends. Hope that helps! Edit: Ah, Jordan said "maybe even low-pass filter" lol - I was typing before he finished, oops!
Andrew's mix could very well work, if it used your suggestions, but I must admit I would have taken the ''dry'' vibe as it came, if nobody said anything. There is a sort of ''endearing'' or ''intimate'' quality to these types of dryer mixes, that close the space around you, like a cozy thing. Make sense?
Yeah there’s no need to put effects on the piano, effects on the vocals, compress the vocals more AND auto tune them... Raw is better in this and most cases. We should relearn how to be comfortable with “naked” performances.
@@indivisibleman chill out, dude. What's wrong with you? What they're saying is that Jordan could do "fixes" to individual tracks instead of the whole master bus. While I agree that AI tools can be detrimental to art and artists, this is not one of those instances.
WHY are you so hellbent on convincing yourself that I'm having some kind of "meltdown" over that comment? It was a JOKE. Remember jokes? THE JOKE is that A.I. seems to be invading every aspect of our creative lives right now and that guy was actually requesting MORE of that!! I've been working with Jordan for some time now and he's a miracle worker on many levels, It's only a matter of time before he figures out how to do that too.@@mrcoatsworth429

What is the name of the band? Sounds promising 👌
The band is called New Barons, they are from Le Mans (France). Great musicians and great fellows to work with 😌

Great song.
Roelofs explanation is way better than any CLA tutorial I've seen.
Thanks for the kind words!
Oooh I missed this! I would love if you looked at my mixes! Been mixing for a year.. Love your content!
Love watching these videos, points out a lot of my own faults and has helped me listen out for any issues when reviewing my own mixes more critically
I really hope Jordan keeps doing this videos. They're so helpful.

Love the first song, reminds me of Steam Powered Giraffe.
The first composition’s main chord progression is very similar to the Black Ops 2’s Green Run ‘Tranzit’ loading music.
Excellent video! Appreciate the inclusion of that fast metal, that was really good.
Also, your cheat sheet is pretty great, I laminated mine. Thanks
I like how you decided to use the adjective “Fun” to describe that Piano part, not sure if intentional but.. it’s definitely Fun
i just bought your ebook.. easily best decision ever

Ty, most helpful videos at this point, when I'm 2 years in
Big fan Jordan. Thank you for all you do
God damn that first vocalist sounds like Julian Casablancas
Hey Joe, I’m the producer / mixer of that song. I actually had that exact same response when I heard the client sing to begin with hahaha.
Love your insights, man, good stuff.

@@alessandrosummer Is that your track? If so, it sounds really a great track!
Thanks for the tip!
@@guitboxgeek unfortunately not 😢 just wanted to say I agree 100 % with what you were saying
This is interesting because normally I hear you warning about tracks not being dry enough.
For vocals, he usually advises putting on a short delay rather than a long reverb. He's doing the same thing here.
Damn thats a nice shirt my friend! looking classy!
Really appreciate this Amigo
I would literally make those same moves to the piano before even listening to the song too I stg 😂😂😂

How do you submit your song for consideration?
How do I submit tracks for future reviews, thanks!
Does Roelof have his own channel too? He's amazing!
I do not! Thx for the kind words!
Is this limited to reviewing pre-mastered mixes? I have some of these I'd like reviewing but also what about a released track?
I don't think it matters.
Nice, I like it :) would be nice if Pro Tools had its own stem separator :)
You really want to make human beings irrelevant, don’t you? It’s getting scary

How do I submit a mix for this? Would love to see where I can improve and where I’m going wrong!
He posts a message on the "community" part of the channel before doing another one of these videos.
Yep
Hey everyone! Kinda new here haha, how do people submit their mixes?
Email him the stems
You should start asking for the stems as well will help alot when you trying to isolate a specific thing
Well at that point he’s just doing his job and should start charging.
