This is helpful. I'd love to see more of these. Kudos to the creators who submitted their mixes. It takes courage to open yourselves up to public criticism of your work.
This was great. Something that might be cool is to have a couple submissions and then get a few different big name mixers to critique the same songs without talking to each other. I'm just curious how many mixers would find the same issues. I assume most of them would find the same treasures, but it could be a good experiment. Cheers.
I agree. This is all so subjective and everyone has a different idea of what sounds good.
I really like this idea, for another episode, get one or two guests on that also voice their opinions on the submissions!
Great mixing lesson: learn to intonate your instrument. 😁
I have a friend who used to be in a band, and he helped me figure out that tip...and I researched how to, and I'm so glad I did, now my recorded guitars sound much better.
yepp, this is most definitley the problem.
Thanks for the feedback man! I really appreciate it. It’s really trippy hearing my song on someone else’s UA-cam video lol. This is the first song I’ve written
@xerebec13 the last one
It's good work man, great job :)
@@HeadrushStudio21228did you tune your guitars? 😂
@@Sailor1010only slightly. Only slightly 😂
This is great for a first song man! The screams under the lead vocal sound great
Yes. More mix critique vids. It really helps us lock down what we need to do with our mixes
I remember reading an interview from a band i really liked who had transitioned from an independent record label to a major, and commented on working in a high-level studio for the first time. They said the biggest immediate difference was that the engineer or producer made them tune their guitars after EVERY take. EVERY ONE. I started doing that and noticed an improvement in my productions!
I appreciate that you are brutally honest in your feedback. No one can learn from, “cool stuff, bro.”
You should totally do more of these. Really really helpful.
Valuable and actionable critiques. Awesome info!
10 out of 10 content! Very cool to hear your mixing expertise applied to these songs
Yeah man, mix critiques are always good videos! keep on doing it...
Thank you for your time and information. I will definitely take this moving forward. Thanks, John-Mark
This is awesome because it showcases how to work with the kind of source material a lot of us are using. More of these please!
These mix reviews are awesome. Thanks for sharing your professional perspective. And for each of the creators who were critiqued, great job all of you!
Your critiques are so helpful and your channel is a breath of fresh air for me, I haven't come across a producer as eager to share info and tips to make our recordings better, in such a genuine and unobnoxious way. Thanks for the great content
These types of videos are soooooo helpful. I immediately start reviewing my mixes mentally when you point out the various items that standout or disappear in some cases.
thanks, Jordan and those who handed their work. great reviews helping me figure out what I wasn't sure about. ur the teacher I'm learning the most from online.
Amazing content, we need more of this. very valuable info and I appreciate it a lot.
Wow! Great content for your channel and feedback for all of us trying to navigate these waters of music production. Even though I’m not into the genres being performed here, I recognize the improvements I could make in my own recordings/mixes. Thank you!
Yes more of this!! Great video! Every little bit of information helps immensely!
This was very helpful. I would personally love to see more of this.
I love this idea. Please do more. Its super informative to get your take on the mixs people send you. I have some i would love to send your way for critique also.
Hey, this is a great video, Jordan! I'd like to see more of these critiques. I think it's really helpful for many viewers (listeners).
A new very helpful video. As always they are very helpful to discover potentials. I look forward to more mix reviews from your viewers. Thanks for your support.
This was great and very helpful, I enjoyed this very much and learned a thing or two!
I'd gladly watch more of these
I love the clear, actionable critiques from somebody with as much experience as you! These are awesome videos, I hope to see more and would love the opportunity to get your critiques on a mix of mine in the future!
i would definitely love to see more of these! i'm guessing you got quite a lot of mixes so it'd be interesting to see more
It was very interesting to watch and I absolutely agree on kudos to those who turned in their work.
I love this! It's gotta be super helpful for the folks who submitted.
This is excellent and super helpful. I'd love to see more videos like this with maybe some other genres. I get that you focus on heavier music, but it would be cool to see your take on other things.
Let's go more reviews. You are best, thanks for work ))
This was a really cool video concept! I would definitely watch more.
This is great! You should definitely do more of these! 🎉
I think these kind of videos are the best way to learn mixing. You can watch as many mixing tutorials as you want, but in the end there is never a formula hos to mix a song. You have to listen to the full mix and identify the problems of the mix. Please do more of this!
I love this kind of vids, short but detailed, more pls!
Definitely do more of these. Very cool!
Hope to see more like this. I found it very insightful
Really helpful, this video made me reconsider my most current mix. Thanks 🙏
First: Thx for your work! Second: For sure, please do more mix-reviews. We can all learn from this!
This is nice Jordan!! These are so helpful tips for us! Thank you!!
I bet some of the out of tune solos are due to intonation issues! Happens all the time, easy to miss. You can tune all day and still get an out of tune solo. Thanks for the insights 🧐
Intonation is pretty easy to adjust too once you know how to do it! Feels 100x better to play too
@@SousaphoneMusic it may be a dumb question, but can you use Melodyne to adjust the tuning of a guitar solo? Just in case it happens that somebody sends me an out of tune solo
@alessandrosummer yeah you should be able to. Alot of people use that trick from what I've heard but I have never tried it
this is a cool series, definitely would love to see more
This is the kind of critique that is really helpful, keep posting :-)!!!
More of these would be cool. I'll try and keep an eye out and maybe submit a mix.
This is a great video! Hopefully you have time for more like these
This was awesome! Please do tons more!!
It was really helpful to hear these insights and congrat for the mixes and its creators: these songs are pretty nice - especially the last one!:)
Keep doin’ the nice work guys! 🤟
Thanks man! I appreciate that. That was my first song I wrote start to finish.
Do more of these. I really liked this.
Great vid. I'd love to see more of these in the future. I think the last one could do with a better IR, it sounds a bit like that's the root of the problem, but eq can definitely help if there's no changing the IR/reamping possible.
Would love to hear a round 2 of this! 🤘🦖
Yea I really like these types videos
Knowing we can get mkx reviews, has REALLY made me wanna get on board and start paying.
Thanks bud
Hey this was super cool! I'd love to see more of these and even participate! I have some mixes id love to send in to be picked apart.
Love it! Im curious, do you think youtube further messes with the mix? Would be curious how different what we hear is to what you hear. I wouldnt be surprised if someting were lost in their compression algorithm.
THIS VIDEO IS ABSOLUTELY GOLD. PART 2 for sure haha!
Great video please do more of these!
Make this a series, that would be awesome
Just found this channel and I got to say that I like your format and approach to these critiques. Straight to the point and nothing flashy, which is what most musicians/recording newbies want.
If you are going to continue with these videos I'll sub and watch whenever I can...
Thanks for this video!
Great vid, learned a lot. Definitely do more!
Great vid! Are you checking these on your NS10/CLA10's? It seems some tunes have some problems in the low end - either a lack of low end, too much mud, etc.
This was super cool, hope you do this again! I would love to send in a mix for you to tear a part!
Definitely do more of these videos🤘🤘
This video makes me feel so much better about my own mixes.
I've been enjoying your videos a lot and this one was super helpful to learn how to pick apart my own mixes and listen critically. How can I send in a mix if I'd like it to be critiqued? Thanks!
Love this kind of videos ... more of it !
Yes - I would love more of this! (Selfishly, would also love to hear critiques on one of my mixes - I can't listen to them objectively anymore lol) Great video and great tips even from this :)
Really interesting and helpful video. So YES more of tese videos please.
Thanks for the feedback! I forgot I had sent you a mix, was casually watching this and said, “WTF?” when you said my name and played my song. I agree with you on the snare. Getting my snare to “crack” through the mix has been a weakness for me. I do agree the vocals are loud, however when listening on AirPods, I like how they sit. Good call out on the kick sample being unique for the genre. I did that on purpose 🤠 Appreciate your thought on the 1k on guitars too. I think my ears might have a natural dip on 1k because I seem to have done that on some of my other mixes when I’ve taken them into commercial studios to be mixed. Thanks again, this was a fun video and shout out to the other musicians who opened themselves up to feedback as well. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
to me it's not as much of an EQ issue but the snare sound or sample itself. a more aggressive snare would probably cut a bit more and go with the style of the music more.
also you should take a hearing test! it was really helpful for me. i have a little hearing damage around a few different treble frequencies, and now that i know where they are, i can be extra careful and (shhh don't tell anyone) rely on meters a little bit more in those ranges.
@@Fire-Toolz Great tip on the hearing test. I have a couple apps I’ve been doing hearing training but it’s not always easy to stay consistent - I could do better. I hope that when I upgrade my speakers and room later this year will help too. Thanks for feedback on the snare sample! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
If you find a great sample but it doesn't cut, especially snare and kick, maybe try a transient shaper. It's just prep work more than recording or mixing I know but we all need to chop the veg before we cook the meal. Good luck with your music man.
@@tonycowin Thanks for the suggestion. Do you have a transient shaper plug in you recommend? I use Logic and it doesn't seem to have a stock one that I'm aware of. I thought it did, but don't see it.
@@kennethdaniels Kilohearts Transient Shaper is a really good free one mate. I'm sure others will have paid recommendations but try the free ones first.
I think it’s not a problem of „tune your guitars“. Most guitarists just don’t play good enough. First you hear this by the way the single notes sounds like in your Video
Great content! More videos like this please
Definitely more of these!

Ah dang it I can't believe I missed this! Will you be doing this kind of thing again?..
👍
Great vid. And cool songs by the bands!
More of these please!
Yes. Mix critiques are a great idea. More!
hey, thanks for this amazing content.
when you say "automate the cymbals up and down", do you mean riding them up and down every 8th note, or as a whole, changing the volume for each section? thanks
This guy is great. This is what my song needs. I know it doesn’t sound right but cannot figure out how to make it sound better. My ears are missing something. I want to buy his editing package but I have failed using all others even after they said it would help. I sound no better than I did 5 years ago. Watching this gives me hope but I know I can never never do it. And I have been doing home recording since 1985 with a Fostex X15 four track cassette recorder.
super useful video, keep it up!
Yes more videos like these please!
This was great! Helpful, and informative! Keep doing these with this insight. Plus it's cool to be exposed to these artists! (maybe add their links?)
Definitely should be regular series.
Oh man this mix could be my old mixes as well. And I think over the years while learning one is scared to start from scratch again and again until the own template mix gets way simpler. I tried to persevere everything I learned in one template. But the truth is , just start over and over again until your template gets more effective while at the same time less complicated, you will learn more and more until you reach a point where your template is just basic eq an compressor settings and the rest will come way easier than. Don’t be afraid to lose something in an over complicated mix just because it may took u years, embrace it.
I really like this series.
Yes do more, very informative
Honestly these are way better then Glenn’s reviews haha good stuff man 🔥
Being better than the guy who is famous for being the fat angry old man who screams is not a high bar to clear (I'm not implying that this is NOT good or anything...I'm just saying Glenn's videos aren't helpful).
@@Jazzguitar00 yeah can’t listen to someone’s advice if their mixes suck
I spend so much time on the creative process I dont give as much thought into all of those sonic variables. U have an ear for pitch as well.
Sure would like to see more mix critiques. Where would one send one for potential feedback? 😅
Great insight, where can we submit a mix if you do more of these?
Yeah do more of these. But have them send a mix along with some bounced stems and or raw stems, so you can show them and us how to treat them.
I think what we’re missing on this critique video is the “why” of it all. I think people need to know what they’re doing with the musicality and emotion of the song when they make these suggested changes. How do these things affect the way the listener reacts to the music?
This was very informative and brutal.
I’m never giving you one of my mixes. 😅
To the originators, some of the comments/opinions are just that, opinions. There are big issues and fine lines. If you are happy with the mix, then it's fine. Most mixers/producers can find "issues" that are often just opinions. Music is art, and as such, is wide open to interpretations, IE: opinions.
ultimately this is true. but jordan's critiques here aren't just some guy's opinion...they're a seasoned engineer's opinion which is wholly informed by many years of experience and his knowledge of hundreds of records in these genres.
@@Fire-Toolz Yes, as are mine. Glad you value his, but I stand behind my post. And so do you; "ultimately that is true." Indeed. Remember, an informed opinion is still an opinion. Perhaps valued more than the uninformed opinion. But we are talking about art. Just a point here, some guitarists, IE: EVH tuned out of tune.
@@georgerichman8293 Failure? What is that? What criticism? I simply stated the obvious. Nothing new. It is all opinions. Good, bad, indifferent. I think Jordan's opinions are well founded, but not law. And if you ask another producer, their opinion might be different. I bet he would agree.
@@georgerichman8293 For me it has to do with artistry. There have been some very popular recordings that I did not like and would have made changes to. But the artist/record company was fine with it. And I am not saying all recordings are fine. Sure, many need work. But sometimes they don't. I've been recording and producing since the 70's and I would change nearly everything I have done. And when I play mixes for other producers guess what, they have their opinions. And so it goes. I am never 100% happy with the mix. And often it is not up to me alone. I like Jordan's comments, but they are not laws. They are opinions. Just like mine, and yours. I am always trying to do better and accept other people's input all the time. Hell, I seek it out. But I recognize they are opinions.
@@tomford8286 Great point about artistry. Artists have a vision and even need to experiment, which more often than not results in failure. But that's the journey. However, even the most experimental artists understand and hone their craft. Learn the craft so you can produce the art.
ah noooo i did not see the post. Are you going to do that again? I'd love to get one of my mixes critiqued by you
Cool tips and tricks. Although there are mix issues, I think the real problem of these songs is that they lack a real production.
Oh, any of my mixes would have been completely roasted if I hadn't missed the note and tried to send one. But mine are not so competitive cause they're instrumental. Anyway, why not to try, if there's a chance? This is really helpful, hope this series will go on.
super helpful as always. would love to see more. though, i figure it is probably very fatiguing for your ears!! Would be great, if you dedicated more focus on the changes in the arrangement. revealing a bit of your experience and expertise as a recording engineer and active producer, regardless of how much the submitting producer might have been involved ,because sonically those parts really make a song come alive. And it's their (our) job to really enhance especially those moments, changes in tempo or atmosphere or choice of instrumentation, shifting accents and so on. It's all about the build up, the tension, everybody wants the chorus and wants to sing along, whereas in fact the magic happens right before. just like s....!!! Ps. respect and gratitude to those who sent their mixes to the ultimate test. great job.
This was great.
How do I submit my mix for review great vid and thx
Last one in the solo may actually be an intonation or bending problem. The overall tuning sounded pretty good but certain notes got a little off up the neck. In my experience at least I've seen that happen from pressing too hard on the string and causing minor unintended bends, or from bad intonation
hi, In the 3rd song were there phase issues?
I seriously love how that last one started out with a big "noooooooo" scream instead going with Yeaaaaaaah" like every other band in history. I've been doing that for awhile, thought I was alone haha thats so cool
Haha, my favourite is on the recent Emery album i mixed - “Oh no, Oh no, Yeah yeah!”
@@hardcoremusicstudio or that seven mary three song where in the bridge he's just like " no no noooo noooo yea yeaaa yeaaaaaa"
