This incident was one of the cases where Prigozhin felt he was let down by rival generals/senior leaders at ministry of defense. When US called Moscow to inquire about the approaching Wagner convoy Russia literally disowned the convoy and that led for US Air Force to play video game style attack on them.
Not just that, ministry of defence also silently called off the air defence. It was straight up betrayal. And probably this forced wagners to buy own air defence systems.
Russia doesn't want these people back on Russian soil, it's the same reason Russia allowed tens of thousands of unvetted people to leave Russia into Syria to join ISIS
I agree, Russia and Wagner have been doing this since 2014 when they invaded Crimea. Russia pays Wagner to go do it so Russia can claim it's not them. Putin did finally admit a month or so ago that they fully fund Wagner.
It's not really a big deal though. We give our soldiers participation medals also. The fact that they were pmc soldiers getting medals is something...... But also nothing.
Its not that the US couldnt have dealt with the SAM sites, especially having the F22 there. Its that the US knew the SAM sites belonged to Russia proper and didnt want to destroy them. Once they were turned off, then the US had a field day
Yeah he pointed that out in the end, it was either that or let our special forces die. If Russia didn't agree to shut down there anti-air defense then cruise missiles would have taken them out.
Thanks for voicing what I was thinking. Cappy made it sound like we were at the mercy of the Russians, at least until he corrected himself in the last 2 mins, which was quite annoying. In fact, we probably TOLD the Russian that they needed to turn off their AA or we'd blow them up.
@@johndoh5182 At the time it was known that the USA and Russia were both present in syrian airspace, and were trying to co-exist in some way. News media had reported about non-firing shows of force and butting eachothers vehicles around. Wagner wasn't mentioned as much, they were "russian mercenaries" in large parts of the press. But it was sort of clear that the russian presence in Syria was more or less official. In the following days, the russian MoD kept denying everything. Instead we got a show where a PMC and their trained locals haplessly tried to take on a national armed force plus allied locals. For me it was a show of why PMCs in modern high-intensity combat are grossly overrated. They can stick to low-intensity security roles, training, logistics and counterinsurgency. A few PMCs with tanks do not make an army.
@@johndoh5182 I don't think a company of Blackwater guys with their own trained local auxiliaries and a detachment of tanks would have done a much better job either, if they had somehow been sent to do the same that day.
I deployed to MSS Conoco a few years after that engagement. I've heard a couple of first hand accounts. A shame you didn't mention the artillery battery that supressed the tank collumn, pinning them down while air support was coming on station. One of the few times the US has used the m777 against an actual armored formation.
They found out real quick what happens when you get between America and oil 🤣 Iran about to find out the same in Straight of Hormuz, 15 years from now we will see all the re-enactments of 100 anti ship missiles against a few Iranian Navy vessels🤣
Tragically, multiple Russian investigative journalists were assa...ehm...I mean, died totally-coincidental, unrelated, and explicable deaths following their attempts to research and publish information about this incident. Rest in Peace, Maksim Borodin, Orkhan Dzhemal, Alexander Rastorguyev, and Kirill Radchenko.
This whole incident was so under-reported, at first it seemed like a rumor. All this time I’ve wondered “why??” The best i could come up with was Wagner would get a bonus if they could embarrass the US and it couldn’t be traced to Putin. The oil field explanation makes sense, but they were crazy to think we would take this lying down.
This happened in 2018 when Trump was president. I think it was because the media in the US were invested in the Russian-collusion narrative, so Trump blowing up Russians would undermine that.
It was under reported because Trump didn't want to criticize his boss. When Putin monitoring the elections saw Trump was losing , I'm sure HE ordered Trump to vacate the Syrian bases. Trump is owned by Putin!
I think that it's unfair to say that this demonstrated any vulnerability in US doctrine. If the Russians hadn't disabled their SAM systems that would have kept the B-52 out, but the remaining US air assets (especially the F-22s) would have been capable of operating. The F-15s and AH-64s would have been forced down to the deck, but that's how they train. I believe that the reason the Russians "agreed" to turn off their AA systems was because they didn't want that sort of direct conflict. The call was something along the lines of "Is this you? If it is, then we can fight. If not, let us in to deal with it and we won't".
Thats exactly what it was. The phone call was more or less "If this isn't you turn off your AA, if it is we are going to take it out." Russia couldn't leave their AA on without indirectly admitting they were using that AA to protect Russians.
For sure ! The worst thing that could happen to Russia is actually scoring a hit on us with that AA. We would not like that one bit lol . And historically we do not react in those situations with proportional force . And Russia couldn’t deny anything and would be utterly embarrassed at being so utterly manhandled
russia wasnt there it was wagnar mostly consisting of local syrians dont listen to this bs and read up the REAL story troops didnt even engage in the field it was mostly howitzers 5 apaches and a ac130
I would wager that part of the reason they had to wait for Russian AA systems to be disabled was because they couldn’t attack the AA without starting another incident
Indeed, Either way those Wagnerites were dead. It was just a question of will the russians be dumb enough to say that the attacking force includes russians and they won't turn the air defence systems off and force us to blow them up, or will they shut them down and let us sort it out without a wider conflict.
The most interesting thing is that by turning of the AA russia betrayed their inofficaly supported Wagner troops to maintain deniability. So that also partly explains the current tensions with Wagner.
They had to turn them off. Once the Russian MoD responded that they had no troops any active SAM systems would have been suspected as being Syrian or Iranian violating the RoE/MOU so they could have been struck w/o repercussion.
I dont remember 100% where I read or saw this(im sure I can find it again if people want a source), but to keep it short, according to said source this incident was what made prigozhin angry versus russian MoD.prigozhin and parts of wagner allied with some syrian warlord and they made a push for said ressources/refinery. the us command called the russians up and asked them are these your guys?and they said no they are not. this would very well combine with turning the AA off(I didnt know about this until now)
They ignored the warning shots and tried to wait out the predator strikes cause they’re probably used to us falling back when the higher ups aren’t involved. Russian gov did not communicate to them and thats why they didn’t know it was different this time. Maybe cause they didn’t want to be recorded communicating with them? That’s why Wagner boss was pissed at Putin?
@@schuschnix5261This would also lead to a major push for heavy equipment acquisition by Wagner as well as kitting out and training an artillery unit specifically for counterbattery operations. There's a standoff between the turkish army and their syrian proxies and the forces of the syrian-arab state with occasional yearly skirmishes.
The most amazing thing to me about this story is the command and communication by the US. The list of different units was amazing, Green Berets, Delta Force, Marines, armour, air force, and this is all handled by a central command. Not sure that the general public realises how amazing this is.
Very true. All the military might in the world won't win a war if it is never in the right place at the right time shooting in the right direction. It is boring and unglamorous but logistics, communication, and organization win wars more so than having the biggest gun.
Thanks for watching spare parts army ! The most interesting thing about this battle to me was some of the larger geopolitical considerations that brought these two forces into Syria in the first place. The reasons are hotly debated. Follow me on instagram for behind the scenes updates: instagram.com/cappyarmy and twitter for thoughts: twitter.com/Cappyarmy (I mean "X" ??")
It was for both reasons, but not for US profiteering. The Syrian Democratic Forces cannot economically support themselves, & the millions of internal refugees they protect, without a steady source of income. The refineries, oilfields, and waterways were also the primary targets of ISIL’s original advances; and Assad, Russia, and Iran’s later attacks to retake the same resources from them. Nobody fights for free, and civilians can’t survive on thoughts & prayers.
Correction - Wagner is not a typical mercenary group (at least in the full sense of that word) but rather a state-funded paramilitary organization that acts as a de facto private army of Russian president Vladimir Putin’s former close ally Yevgeny Prigozhin. Wagner has been involved in various conflicts and operations around the world, often in support of Russian interests or allies, and has been accused of human rights violations and war crimes. Wagner’s founder and leader, Prigozhin, is a wealthy businessman with a criminal record who is known as “Putin’s chef” because he provided catering for the Kremlin. He is also under US sanctions for his alleged role in interfering in the 2016 US presidential election. Wagner’s first field commander is believed to have been Dmitry Utkin, a veteran of Russia’s wars in Chechnya and a nazi, who used “Wagner” as his radio call sign.
@@GoatPopsicle "but not for US profiteering" Yeah, there is absolutely nothing to profit from supporting the enemy of an enemy, especially when such support might lead to destabilizing other governments in the region deemed unfriendly to US interests, nor there is no profit in actually having military control over oil-rich lands, right? What I find most confusing is that you actually reached the correct conclusion yourself: "Nobody fights for free"! That includes the US as well, and you can call it profit, interest, it does not matter, it underlies the same principle
I think one thing that didn't get enough attention is what you mentioned at the end. The US actually had multiple options to deal with the advancing Russian armor, and the fact that they turned off air defenses is just the best outcome. it's not that the US was powerless without the Russians turning off their air defense, it's that the alternatives meant an escalation. when we are talking about using this battle as a test bed for the different tactics, we're always doing it assuming that there's going to be an open conflict, and we won't have to go back and forth about well that'll escalate this or something. and as soon as we take the escalation factor off the table, more options open up as you mentioned. we could have used cruise missiles, and launched them earlier while they were still preparing rather than right as they were attacking, we could have used some of the planes on the back line to launch air-to-ground missiles potentially outside of air defense range in order to allow the Air Force in, or we could have gone with long-range missiles only, or we could have swarmed them with drones... The list goes on but it shows that both sides were constrained by the geopolitics and so this maybe isn't the parallel that others say it is.
If russia wouldn't have turned them off, the usa would have turned them off for them in order to take care of the soldiers holding the objective. And would have dealt with the concequences later.

You're missing the point, that Wagner is not representative of Russian military power. This isn't Russia vs US. Any unit which is sacrificed by their nation so coldly, would get destroyed. They are meant for this type of thing. If they succeeded great, but they were never going to be supported by Russia and that was the point. Delta Force would have met the same fate if the US left them out to dry like that, going against every weapon of Russia. This not to say Russia is a great military, as Ukraine has shown. My point is that this isn't a comparison of US vs Russia capability, but that Russia has no regard for their own human lives.
The problem wasn´t that russian air defence was active. I would say the problem was that US troops couldn´t attack russian air defence positions directly. That´s the reason Wagner is so useful. You can attack without direct russian gouvernement involvement.

@@TheWorldsOkayestUSMarine Dogfights are a thing of the past. Nowadays missiles are launched from a large distance and guided into the target. When this hit the news, my impression was that a US special forces platoon, local allies and some massive US fire support had beaten back a mixed troop of russian mercenaries and russian-allied locals and that the russian command had decided not to risk confronting US air power.

At the time, it was known that Russia and the USA were both flying in syrian airspace. 30 Special Forces operators plus some REALLY vengeful air cover lol. 500 on 30 would have usually resulted in a loss for the 30, but America doesn't fight that old school way anymore. It's 500 vs 30 + 64 + 130 + 15. And by 64, 130 and 15, I mean AH-64, AC-130 and F15. Fuck yo fair fight!! and my guess is the US told Russia they were coming in anyway. Apaches are much more vulnerable to Russian anti-air than higher flying, faster jets. F15s and F22s would have had to destroy the anti-air first before the Apaches could move in, which would have slowed the response. This is probably what the Russians realized would happen. Since the Russians were telling the USA the forces attacking the oil refinery weren't Russian, they had to decide whether or not to keep the air defense on or risk having it all destroyed by the USAF and a large Army and Marine Corps counter assault. As we learned in Ukraine a few years later, Russian T-72s pop like a shaken up beer can when hit with a Javelin. Those tanks wouldn't have lasted long at all once the QRF force arrived with heavier weapons. But the Russians did the smart thing, and turned off their S300s. Which enabled the USAF and Army to absolutely wreck shit from the air. Also telling just how little value Russia places on infantry, especially when its not their infantry. They turned off their air defense and allowed their allies and their own PMCs to get brutalized, rather than call them back from the fight.
They allowed it cause they don't give a flying f''k, they have plenty of cannon fodder plus military command was jealous of PMC' s success and freedom of operation, so they not just turned off the AA batteries, but also hadn't radioed PMC's commander telling him that they were in the battle with US SFs and not some poor kurds. That was made deliberately and Prigozhin said that at least twice, blaming military for this catastrophe
I laughed the first time he said it but what do you expect from your average infantry man. He does do good videos though. As a Marine I always like to watch his videos with a fresh box of crayons and a beer.
Having family member (obviously not going to mention his name due to what is going on) who worked for Wagner in Syria, while this wasn't just some sort of Prigozhin trying to take Conoco refinery. Russian MOD needed to test US response to their actions (this was constant dick measuring exercise if noted with later videos, where Russian and US soldiers clashing trying to cut off and T bone each other off the road or blocking each other patrols in Syria). Russian Top Brass wanted to see how far they can push the envelope in this stare off without taking casualties and who wasn't any better to send in to do that, that "The Security Guards for Oil Fields" to see what will happen? To make it look like it was "The Rogue Action", they mixed in The Musicians with SAA regulars, who provided the bulk of heavy armor for this assault. Funny thing, when the situation came to light in Russia this was the mixed response from the public ranging from "Theydontexist" to making fun of Russian Mercenries (at that time Mercenary work was viewed as relative taboo in Russian public - That changed with invasion of Ukraine and the spinning of PR campaign of Wagner become "The Defender of The Nation").
That makes much more sense than Cappy's "Prigozhin doing a resource grab" speculation. There's no way the capture of the refinery would have resulted in "business as usual but money going to Wagner" scenario. The refinery would have simply shut down and all the workers evacuated prior to Wagner moving in.
So you're saying your family member, who was working for Wagner, knew what was in the minds of MOD heads. And that family member wasn't among the Wagner high command probably, so Prigozhin probably had even more information but still went for it. Interesting...
There are less blood ways of assessing opposition power. That type of antics is the reason the top brass in the West considers Wagner group a mercenary group more than a PMC.
I remember this event being mentioned in the news. Russia was well aware of how devastating US power was against their troops and those batteries would have been destroyed. We came close to a world war when this event occurred.

They get plenty of mention, just not in western media. Just look at the narrative spinning we saw during the election and over the Ukraine war. Half our country still doesn't know the Ukraine had 8 years of a civil war before Russia moved in.
We won't hear about several engagements until years after they happen, that's normal. You can compare this to current ukrainian special operation sabotage crews, we will not know where they are or what they're doing until it's done and dust settled.
Kudos for this informative video. Rather than not over-extending forces, what steps are to be taken to protect ground troops in case air support is stifled like the initial few hours of that battle? Know what is sad, humans have been fighting over that small patch of land for 5,000 years.
Yeah typically both countries communicate their plan ahead of time to avoid this from happening. Wagner keeps making the same mistake in Ukraine and ends up fighting Russia
This incident was one of the cases where Prigozhin felt he was let down by rival generals/senior leaders at ministry of defense. When US called Moscow to inquire about the approaching Wagner convoy Russia literally disowned the convoy and that led for US Air Force to play video game style attack on them.
Banking on Russian brass just expecting the US to be caught completely off guard.
Keep making excuses for atrocities
I agree, Russia and Wagner have been doing this since 2014 when they invaded Crimea. Russia pays Wagner to go do it so Russia can claim it's not them. Putin did finally admit a month or so ago that they fully fund Wagner.

Its not that the US couldnt have dealt with the SAM sites, especially having the F22 there. Its that the US knew the SAM sites belonged to Russia proper and didnt want to destroy them. Once they were turned off, then the US had a field day

The USA has no business being in Syria, it is an invasion of a sovereign country
Russia was invited by the legal government.
Crazy to think that you would take them fulfilling the will of the incumbent president of Syria lying down?😅
If it was widely reported the US public might have asked too many questions about what we were doing invading yet another country (Syria).
The phone call was more or less "If this isn't you turn off your AA, if it is we are going to take it out."
Russia couldn't leave their AA on without indirectly admitting they were using that AA to protect Russians.
For sure ! The worst thing that could happen to Russia is actually scoring a hit on us with that AA. We would not like that one bit lol . And historically we do not react in those situations with proportional force . And Russia couldn’t deny anything and would be utterly embarrassed at being so utterly manhandled

I would wager that part of the reason they had to wait for Russian AA systems to be disabled was because they couldn’t attack the AA without starting another incident
He states that they would of had have been hit with cruise missiles
Indeed, Either way those Wagnerites were dead. It was just a question of will the russians be dumb enough to say that the attacking force includes russians and they won't turn the air defence systems off and force us to blow them up, or will they shut them down and let us sort it out without a wider conflict.
Nothing gets past you, huh?
Yeah, I note F-35s weren’t involved, which I bet were standing by for SEAD and DEAD ops if Russia confirmed it was them and refused to back down.
Well it would break both agreement. Russia can't directly attack US or Israel and NATO and vice versa
That doesn't necessarily make sense, the aircraft could have needed to approach across the Syrian territory.
You give the impression Assad and ISIL were on the same side.
You got this idea from the brother in arms video haha
Bullseye!

Wow. Some of the chatter from the media touched on this but it was vague and usually somewhat obscure. This is a great summary of what essentially happened and what was going on behind the scene. Thank you for your work.
Probably didn't have a full picture then, and had no real reason to follow-up since nothing else happened.
Heartily agree, informative and entertaining. Thank you.
At the time, it was known that Russia and the USA were both flying in syrian airspace. And that they both were doing some sort of weird dance around eachother to test eachothers limit without starting a full confrontation. The russian air force were taking part in the string of brutal urban sieges the al-Assad regime was conducting to retake cities.
@@SusCalvin Yep. That was my limited understanding at the time... It may also have been the media's limited understanding of it at the time.
@@johnnycaps1 I think the sieges of much larger urban centers stole much of the attention. There was no US no-fly zone over the entire syrian territory, and al-Assad seemed fine with pushing back different rebel pockets with outside help from Iran, Russia and Hezbollah. An oil field is pretty important but large pockets of rebels holding a big city like Homs or Aleppo is more important.
In the EU, refugees became the big news as the war kept going year after year. It didn't start right off, I think it wore on over a period of years.
I think it's more of minimizing escalation as the main factor in US forces not disabling Russia's anti-air systems rather than lacking the capability to

There were no M2 Bradleys in Syria until 2020, most US vehicles outside the wire where MaTV's, older max pro mraps, LMTVs, and occasionaly up armored humvees, only the special forces/ state department drove toyota puck up trucks and suvs. There were some images of strykers also being used in Syria.

Yeah, it was dependant upon russia turning off their air defense, however, that was more diplomatic than a tactical necesity. We could easily have taken out their air defense if we had to but just didnt want to spark a war with the russians.
Just like they didn't want to spark a war with the U.S. by shooting down their aircraft to defend PMC, which is why they turned them off.
You don't know that. You make it sound like American troops are never sacrificed in battle, there are countless examples.

Interesting to hear the full story behind this incident. Always just heard the over simplified "Russians attacked and got blown to bits" version.
This story is bunch of BS exaggerated and spun completely. A bunch of Syrian light infantry (and their Russian instructors) were thinking they were clearing similar ISIS light infantry and got attacked instead by US attack helos and drones. So strong. I mean i understand that US simply steals Syrian land and oil, but then they pretend they get some major victory by massacring some light infantry who were equipped to fight only a similar lightly armed foe? Yikes. The casualties were not even 200, that is just a rounded propaganda number.

Wagnerserinian Obliteration. Your motivation breakdown makes sense. You didn't mention it in this vid,, but Wagner has made similar moves in Africa where it's seized or been "given" gold (and diamond, I think) mines.

@nischuma6910 go ahead and educate yourself on the power and versatility of the US Navy and Air Force alone compared to the Russian equivalent. They're not even in our food chain
I had watched other videos about this and none of them mentioned that the Russian military intentionally turned off their air defenses to let the Americans do their thing. That's a pretty hugely significant detail, that the fury of American air power was still held in initial check by air defense. Though I also don't envy a bunch of irregular forces engaging US Special Ops troops, even without air support.
I wouldn’t say Held and check by the air defense systems. I would say, held in check by global Geo political agreements. If the United States wanted, those air defenses would’ve been turned off. Just one of those aircraft in the sky have the power to target and eliminate those systems.

in ukrain problem is not planes or tanks or artillery ... problem is that ukrainians are too smart and don't need others advice
Since they don't have the air power yet saying "it's not a problem" for Ukraine misses the point. Conoco was a smaller force holding off a larger one w/air power.
@@klaabu99 For the counter offensive it totally is a problem though.
Ukraine is not getting F-16's nor long range misses. The USA is not giving Ukraine our most advanced weapon systems. Fist who gonna fly the jets? It takes years to become a capable pilot to fly plus be able to utilize all the high tech. The tech in the jets are highly classified secrets. Ukraine and some stateside dummy think America is just going to give it to Ukraine freely. Wow at a lost for words. Why not lend them a carrier to clean the Black Sea. That how porposterous this sounds.
I love you, Bro, and have watched dozens of your movies and learned some things but Hey! I have NEVER heard Conoco pronounced "con-OH-co" before. It is accented on the first syllable thus: "CON-o-co". That concludes my speech lesson for the day.
The official story from the russian MoD in the days following this was denial. They kept denying that these dudes had been sent by them.
Mali's Tuareg rebels just gave Wagner another a** beating.

Cappie, you've become an outstanding, entertaining source for battlefield analysis
Thanks for the insight. 👍
