- Courtesy of Clark Santee archives, incredibly rare footage of Chicago trail-blazing folk artist Steve Goodman performing his song destined to become a huge international hit for Arlo Guthrie one year later. Award-winning director/producer Clark Santee captured some truly amazing artists early in their careers and Steve Goodman is no exception, setting the standard in Chicago that sowed the seeds for future greats John Prine and Loudon Wainwright.
It makes be happy to listen to this version. What a great gift he has given to the world with this song.

In high school- Maine East - he used to make up funny songs and sing them at all-school assemblies. We loved him!
wow....that had to be amazing! i think hillary was in that class too. i went to lane tech some years after that, but i saw steve play a few times, including at chicago fest. the first time i saw him, and probably one of the most incredible performances i ever saw by anyone, he opened for steve martin at chicago stadium around 1976 or 1977 (IIRC).

I love hearing Steve sing his own song. He was glad for others to cover it, as he knew that his life would be short and the song could produce royalties for his surviving family. I read once that that was why he did not make a ruckus when John Denver recorded an altered version of it. Arlo definitely put it on the map, and the way radio royalties go, it is the writer and publisher who profit, so Arlo making the song a hit was a good thing for Steve. I also read that Arlo later read Denver the riot act for the way he handled the song. At any rate, a great song, and also enjoy Willie Nelson's rendition. Incidentally, the change from steam/dream to steel/feel was Arlo's idea, and I think actually it goes better. Also slight chord change from this version, which goes to a C on "fields" in verse 1.
The story I've heard about Steve Goodman pitching City of New Orleans is a Chicago classic. Haven't fully vetted the tale but it sure sounds true.
Arlo had finished his last set at the Quiet Knight. Belmont & Sheffield? Is it still in business?
Steve was in attendance. He fiinagled his way into the bar, closed to the public, where Guthrie was chillaxing and sipping a beverage.
Steve begs Arlo to just "give a song a listen. You'll like it!" Seat of the pants A&R.
Arlo declines. Says he's tired and not in the best state of mind. Maybe some other time.
Steve persists. Tells Arlo he'll buy him a jumbo beer for a 3 minute listen.
Arlo still waffles. Steve still in full-metal "pitch mode".
Guthrie finally relents. Saying something like "This better be good, kid. And I'm holding you to that beer."
One man. One guitar. One of the greatest American songs of the 20th Century later....Arlo is just gobsmacked.
Also, legend has it that the opening line of the 1st two iterations of the chorus - Good Mornin' America" was the inspiration for the TV show.

looks like Maury Muehleisen, Jim Croce's side man. Steve did shows with Croce in 1970. this look’s impromptu

according to a friend of Steve’s …”that’s jack mcgann, he played the second guitar on the original recording of the dutchman. he was a great musician and a great guy from philadelphia. he died of aids in ‘91.
i knew him well and performed with him many times.”
Arlo Guthrie never gave Steve enough credit for what would be his biggest hit.
