I'm not usually a jrpg fan but megs monster seems like it might be a good introduction to the genre, season just looks amazing but i'm still waiting for a good deal on it

Great selection of games. It is the way these games speak to the heart that makes them stick in my memory as well. I came away a bit changed, my empathy broadened and compassion deepened by the experience. I think the Rakuen games would be a great fit on this list as well. Laura Shigihara's craft warms the heart.

Funny thing about this video - the concept was "underrated indie games from 2023" and it was only when I'd finished that I realised they're all about loss and grief in one way or another. I might have taken the topic more head on if I'd realised sooner :) maybe emotional resonance of games can be another one in the future. ✨

Had quite a peaceful time with The Gunk. Would have been great to have more back and forth

I hadn't heard of Meg's Monster, thanks! In return I'll recommend a heartwarming game called Sumire.

    Good Video!🙂
Another good indie game is No Time, an indie time travel game. It has an interesting story! Have you ever heard of it?

I haven't. Thanks for mentioning it, I'll look it up. It feels increasingly rare to get recommendations I haven't heard of so I always like it!

Hadn't heard of the first three before, Meg's Monster in particular seems like my style. I've also had Season: A Letter to the Future on my wishlist for a while but haven't bought it yet, maybe I will next time it goes on sale!
If you (or anyone here in the comments) want another underrated indie game from last year that I feel might fit with these, *In Stars and Time* was easily my favorite game of 2023 (yes, even over Baldur's Gate 3!). It's a game where you're caught in a time loop, with really fun gameplay (admittedly it gets a bit tedious sometimes, but I still loved it overall), an amazing story, and absolutely fantastic characters. Serious content warming for general mental health issues and self harm, it definitely gets dark at times but it's also got plenty of funny and heartwarming moments too :)

The submersible feels great, it has that nice padded momentum, it really feels like moving through water!

I found season to be janky, the gameplay shallow, but mostly I found the game pretentious. I hat that word, but I feel like here it fits because the comments the PC said allways things that sounded deep, but didn‘t really have anything to say.
    Big miss for me!
Firewatch, wide ocean big jacket, Kentucky road zero, before your eyes, Edith Finch and Tacoma are all Games that did similar things way better. Hell, even Mutazione roped me through its barebones gameplay with a lovely cast of characters and story.

Yeah I agree that Season didn't really have a big message to offer, it was vague and more of a mood than a story. But I really, really liked that mood. I liked the game much more than most people.

Fair enough! Glad you liked it :) I feel the same, that sometimes moods can really turn a game into something special. Every time ai hear the dishonored background noice, or the aristocrat `wlysium ost something inside me awakens@@GamingInTheWild

I thought Under The Waves was OK, I mainlined the story since I was really just trying to make progress between game crashes, but I think Firewatch did the story better.
I’m new here so I went searching through your content and haven’t seen Outer Wilds yet. That’s a cult classic indie masterpiece that still hasn’t been beat in my opinion.

Yeah Under The Waves was super unstable and buggy when it launched - hope they've patched it up since. I liked the feeling it gave me, more than the game itself, if that makes sense.
Some of the old videos are formative stuff for me - not as tight and punchy as the newer ones. I'm planning to revisit some of the games I covered in the past in the newer style I've got going on. Outer Wilds is a good shout for that.

While somewhat popular upon release, I think _Planet of Lana_ would fit pretty well into the superficial theme of the video. I'm not sure I'd say it's underrated, but at times it is quite beautiful. Mostly unrelated, for a jarring shift in tone, I've been distracted with _Peaks of Yore_ this week, something that had slipped through my radar from last October. All you need to know: imagine that _Jusant_ met _Getting Over it with Bennett Foddy_ and they got along. While not for everyone, its fairly far afield from my usual fare, but nonetheless scratched an itch I didn't know I had.
