BNSF Trains in Trout Creek, Montana

The western end of Montana Rail Link's Fourth Sub traverses some of the most stunning scenery in the entire state. Unfortunately, MRL power rarely ventures further west than Thompson Falls. However, with the scenery too good to pass up, we spent some time around the village of Trout Creek, capturing several BNSF trains along a short three mile section of the Fourth Sub.
MRL announced in January, 2022 that it would be terminating its lease of the former Northern Pacific line across Montana, giving BNSF full control of the line well before the 2047 expiration date. While the STB has yet to rule on this matter, the odds are in favor of a BNSF takeover, ending a 35 year run of one of America's favorite regional railroads.
