Whether it be ultra relevant, like the latest cringy TikTok trend, or ultra irrelevant, like how to use LimeWire to download “In Da Club” by 50 Cent that ends up being “Numb” by Linkin Park. I believe that is similar to a NakeyJakey video, or as he’s known by Eddy Burback, the Yoga Ball Gamer. Drew Gooden and I share many qualities: comedic sensibilities, hair color, spending far too much time on videos that are not what our audience is asking for. Scott Cramer constantly makes me laugh, and he similarly puts a lot of time into his videos. 2 Danny 2 Furious, nickisnotgreen, Jarvis Johnson, Kurtis Conner, Jake Doolittle, Duncan Kastner, & Mr. Beard are all lots of fun dynamic comedians who should make a video with me. @@oneshot8109 From what I’ve seen of issue on UA-cam, I think rather than this being a “cancel army” this is an accountability army.
      I think Sabrina came forward and told a story about a horrible, eye opening, medical experience she went through. Discussing the emotional turmoil she was going through at the time and those who didn’t help that emotional turmoil, is a part of her story.
      As for a better apology, I think Gus could’ve apologized to Sabrina in a sincere way and he could’ve apologize for letting down his audience, but given his ‘apology’ he doesn’t seem sincerely sorry about any of it, and that’s why people are criticizing him. He seem sorry about losing his connections and his career, not for how he treated Sabrina. He didn’t need to add the part about apologizing to people he worked with. The people he worked with had nothing to do with how he treated Sabrina.
      Also, just because Sabrina won’t accept his apology, dose not negate the fact he should apologize to her for emotionally abusing her.
      I think people hearing her story, seeing his reaction, and changing their opinions of Gus is not canceling him, it’s his audience rejecting horrible behavior.

    • @oneshot8109

      @Daphne Groth what does accountability mean to you? Gus has lost his best friend and business partner, a huge source of income, his tour is ruined, no one is going to work with him, he has no chance of doing any sort of acting work, the "drinking with the boys" comment is everywhere anytime he makes any sort of post.
      Clearly a large portion of his former audience either hates Gus, or like me, just can't buy into his persona anymore, so he's not going to be as popular as he once was unless he makes some huge changes to his style or just drops comedy entirely (which I doubt, it seems like being funny is all he knows).
      I understand he may not deserve to, but he is allowed to work and try to return things to normal for himself. You are also allowed to shit on him for trying because you have no obligation to trust him or believe that he actually regrets anything. But you are fixating so much on the most cynical ways to interpret his apology. Why is there no reason to apologize to his collaborators? They got sucked into this drama too right? Maybe he was just sincerely sorry for putting them in this position where they had to do their own damage control. You keep saying he should directly apologize to Sabrina but to what end? The major issues happened like 3 years ago, and then they didn't even break up immediately after. So they must have found some sort of reconciliation in that time right? What I mean is, even though he didn't say it publicly, how could you think he didn't already apologize to her for all of this, not only when it happened, but at any other point where they talked about this in private. Look at this from his perspective, an ex gf starts to publicly release deeply private details of your life, calls you a liar when you apologize, liking tweets that shit on you, calls you a liar again, backtracks and says technically it wasn't therapy and reveals another private conversation about polygamy. In what world do you live in where you think that guy should directly address this ex gf in any way ever again.

    It just sucks so much worse because of how he branded himself as such a morally upright and wholesome guy. • @asmr_sabri
      @asmr_sabri 2 роки тому +276

      The fact that he cut ties with Gus speaks volumes, I have never once seen a friend break up a friendship over how abusive that person was in their last relationship. People usually justify it by saying it’s not their business and they don’t want to be involved in the “drama” (lol). What Eddy did was actually legitimately uncommon and difficult, so if nothing else he has better ethics than most men I know.

    • @Anno_Al
      @Anno_Al 2 роки тому +75

      Or it could just be that he didn't want to take any risk of getting negatively affected by his close association with him and it was preemptive damage control. Not saying I believe this, I know very little about these people, my issue is people having this expectation of celebrities and "content creators" to be 100% genuine. They're providing entertainment, they're not your friends, you don't actually know who they are in private no matter how convincingly genuine they are. If people don't start examining the weight and importance their parasocial relationships with complete strangers have they're just gonna keep getting into this situation of feeling disappointed and betrayed.

    • @BlackParade727
      @BlackParade727 2 роки тому +53

      @Anno Sterner Allén well yeah, that was exactly my point though. That we CAN'T know whether Eddy is also just completely faking his image, because they can just say whatever they want to save face. However, there are other ways he could've gone about this situation to come out looking good even without cutting Gus off (like saying he was going to stick around to help educate him, or he's taking a break from the friendship without ending it, etc). So I choose to believe his reaction is a good sign. It's reasonable to hope that people are not duplicitous liars just out to save their image.
      It's impossible to have zero expectations of people, parasocial relationship or not. If you choose not to engage with explicitly harmful creators, you are implicitly saying that you do trust (to some extent) the creaters you DO engage with. It's not a wildly high bar to expect people to not be actual abusers or terrible people. Sure if he just had a fight with a friend and people got mad that he was even mildly imperfect that'd be crazy, but he neglected his girlfriend and downplayed her pain while she was essentially potentially close to death. I don't claim to know them, but it's still surprising that he did that. It's the same way that people are shocked when terrible things come out about a teacher they had once, sure they know they knew little to nothing about their life but you still hold out hope that you can recognize bad people when you see them-- even though most times you can't.

      I’ve definitely had more issues with female doctors dismissing my severe period pain with than male doctors unfortunately. It’s incredibly heartbreaking to have your issues dismissed because your female doctors essentially say “Well my periods aren’t that painful so you must be over exaggerating.” I exclusively seek out male doctors now because it has happened so many times with female doctors and only male doctors take my pain seriously immediately. Before those experiences I would have thought a female doctor would actually take me more seriously. I'm sure that males making appeals to emotion when it comes down to their own tragic experiences may be met with backlash, but we would be debating over a hypothetical male.
      As for the actual situation, one would have to take into account the intention of the og video: giving a personal testimony on dealing with an ectopic pregnancy, touching not only on the negative experience of the medical establishment but also how it inadvertently impacted a personal relationship which further influenced her decision making as well as her access to medical care in the first place; as one can see, the focus was not on the misbehavior of the bf himself. It was the personal actions of others lurking social media as well as Gus admitting guilt that lead to his actions being judged by the public eye.
      There was no appeal to emotion coming from her in the sense of proving the argument of him being a "monster", since the format of the video was such that it only stated a line of events, not necessarily proving a point about his character.
      About the cancellation part, one could see UA-camrs dissociating from him from what occurred, however those were their personal decisions so one cannot tell whether they were privy to more information or were guided by other factors like public perception or morals. And for the public's perception, his main platform, UA-cam, is still standing, meaning that he hasn't been deplatformed; with most of the criticism coming from twitter, which I don't know how that translated to UA-cam.
      Personally, I believe that he has profited over his likeness (skits) and life (podcast), curating a fanbase based on a parasocial relationship in which he was perceived as both progressive and even defensor of women so it'd make sense why a part of his fans would make the personal choice to not consume his content anymore after the suspension of disbelief had been destroyed. One doesn't get to only reap the benefits of publicizing and capitalizing themselves online without backlash.

Sabrina could have been dead and i assume had Gus not forced her to be quiet (while it sucks that women rarely get listened to in hospital, Gus couldve convinced the doctors to check on her, which might have saved her) that the both of them would have gone through the hospital process of a pregnancy with the idea of waiting till she could get an abortion. They wouldve found out about her condition while getting treated. But of course Gus is an awful person, i cannot stress this enough *SHE COULD HAVE AVOIDED THIS HAD SHE GOTTEN TREATED EARLIER, SHE WOULDNT HAVE TO BE WORRIED ABOUT DYING WHEN SHE WANTS TO HAVE KIDS LATER, YOU HAVE TAKEN AWAY A PRIMARY FUNCTION OF HER BODY AND HER CHOICE TO HAVE CHILDREN OF HER OWN AWAY* part of me is glad she talked about it online, even if she didnt mention Gus by name, i know how much it sucks when someone who abused you and hurt you gets to roam free and you constantly hear about how great they are. It’s for the best that we know of her pain

    I’m someone who tends to be really cautious about parasocial relationships with creators (I’m an ex Onision fan- that expirence taught me A LOT), and I was really surprised by how much this whole situation affected me. I was so SO angry for Sabrina (which I think is warranted, as most women can understand her experience) but I was also just…crushingly disappointed by Gus. Like genuinely sad and just…well disappointed is the best word I have for it. He felt safe. He felt goofy and kind and caring, “boys support boys” and all that, and it gave me yet another big shakeup in comfort with people on the internet even though I was already being conscious about it. Just such a shitty situation and he’s such a disgusting person.

I’m not close to my parents neighbors but if she told me about them in an experience like this I’d be equally devastated for the woman and disappointed in the man. Gus and Sabrina are still real people. And Gus really did disappoint us and Sabrina’s story was devastating. I never want to stop being devastated from that kind of thing. When that happens I shouldn’t be around people, because that means my empathy is lost.

Like what would be so hard to do further testing? Because even. At my skinniest Ive had issues so I don’t think it’s that. They so easily dismiss me.
      One time I had a molar pregnancy. The male doctor I went to told me he was refusing to treat me because my condition violated his religious beliefs because at the time I thought I was just normally pregnant. And I wasn’t married so yeah. Also I was on state health insurance so that’s called Christian sharia. I nearly died. I bled so bad I slept in the bathtub. I had to go to the ER. Because I knew they couldn’t refuse treatment. The doctors didn’t know what it was. Until they called in another doctor. She told me if I didn’t have surgery by the next morning I’d be dead in 48 hours and if I didn’t die then somehow cancer would spread throughout my body and I’d need chemo for many years. The after care was horrible. I had to do multiple blood works per week for a while. Then once a week for a while. Then once every other week. To make sure my levels where continuously going down. I was alone through all this, my abusive ex didn’t gaf.

Even men will go into a clinic and say they've got some issue and the doctor will just be like "oh it's nothing, it's fine." I think it IS worse for gynecological issues but the fact is that doctors in general just don't treat medical complaints very seriously a lot of the time. I've had an issue for like 15 years, my tonsils swell up, and I've noticed it's mostly my right tonsil that swells the most. It happened 6 times in 4 months on year. I bring it up to every doctor I see and they just go "Well it looks okay now! :)" So I just stopped even mentioning it because they never really listen to what I say. And that's way less dramatic than bleeding internally from an ectopic pregnancy, or the people who have such awful menstrual cramps that they vomit and pass out (although only one tonsil getting swollen is a sign of cancer, so that's fun).

Then I realized planned parenthood could help me for free or cheap, so I made an appointment, and as soon as I told him he got upset and went on a rant about how we can't afford it, and I was stupid for not asking permission, because he's tired of paying for everything and he had an eye doctor appointment the same week, so now I've messed up all our finances. Everyone cares about whether he's in the wrong or not because of his videos and how people are fans of him, but none of that conversation actually supports HER ya know? It's not about her at that point, its about him. But SO SO SOOO MUCH more happened other than him being a dick to her, and we, if we really want to support HER and not just unsupport him, need to hear that entire story, and not have it be lost in the drama around her ex, which is all this video does - focus on the ex drama bit, not the literal medical abuse. The medical malpractice she faced is so much more important than him and Sabrina's own video demonstrates that. Her story would still be absolutely horrific WITHOUT him, not because of him. He's a side character in this story and we shouldnt be so focused on him.

    But that was it. This is such a private matter. It makes me uncomfortable that many people held their parasocial relationship with Gus in such high regard, that they speak about this as if they are the victim, because he betrayed their trust. This is Sabrina's trauma. Not ours.

    The topic of this video hits so much harder than when I first found out about what had happened to Sabrina. As a young woman this was already something that felt deeply relatable, but soon after getting caught up with everything I talked to mum. I have been alive for 17 years, my sister 22, and we never knew my mother had had an abortion. Hearing how she talked about it, I can only imagine what she has been carrying on her shoulders all these years. I am so thankful to my father for being a decent human being and supporting her, leaving the choice with her body. With this in mind, everything that Gus Johnson did to Sabrina was vile and unforgivable. All his actions were lacking in thought, respect, love and basic human decency and there can never, ever be an excuse to his actions. Due to my family and some of their backgrounds, I fully support that people can change for the better: but this? It can be forgiven perhaps, but not forgotten. Gus should not be allowed to be back on UA-cam, and the consequences of his actions must be fully realised for there to be any true growth. Sabrina is an incredible woman for being able to keep on living and working after what she has been through and I truly wish her the very best, I don’t know if I could have done what she did and appreciate what her actions has done for my relationship for my mother and respect for those able to go through with abortion. Even aside from the fact that there's *clearly* a lot more going on behind the scenes that we don't know about (Stuff that I'm sure would probably make this much much much worse), His actions in the public space are enough proof to know that he's not the person he wants you to think he is.

    And it sucks, because I liked his content. But to know how much neglect and hate was on the other side? I couldn't, in good faith, continue to watch.
    This wasn't, "oh he used a slur at 14 years, let's ruin his career" this was "he abused his girlfriend who could have died." :/ And the fact that people can't see the difference between being a shithead as a teen/child/young adult and ABUSE, it's very upsetting.

    This whole situation is very sad, but especially dystopian because while Sabrina shared a story of the misogyny she faced throughout a literal near-death experience, it ended up being all about Gus anyway. truly heartbreaking, I hope people can see through the "drama" and reflect on how this isn't just an individual experience - almost every AFAB person (including myself) I know has been through a similar experience.

    This is also a white women and she almost died. That’s how much healthcare doesn’t care about women. Imagine being a black women in this situation. An undocumented women. A women with a criminal record. A women in jail. A disabled women. A women with no funds at all. It’s so common and so commendable she shared because I guarantee it helps someone in her audience

      While I agree with your points, I must make two corrections.
      One: singular is woman, women is plural.
      Two: Sabrina isn’t white

      I know people who you just said are underprivileged and they have had better health care than me and good experiences. Why do you always bring race into it? I've been told by so many people that because I'm white I must have the best health care and have always been "respected" fuck yall are terminally online, shits more complicated than that.

    I appreciate this video as somebody that doesn't have Twitter and my only point of reference for any of this was Gus' apology video which I thought was a parody right up until it ended and even then I had no idea what it was in reference to. Literally the vaguest shit I've seen in my life

    I know i'm late to this video, but I'm so glad it exists. I was a big fan of gus in high school, and then this happened when I was in college, and stopped watching gus's stuff once I heard about this. thank you for looking into this in more detail than I ever felt I could/should. I feel for Sabrina, and hope she's doing well

    Bro I hate men like this for real… I‘d been subbed to Gus for a long time and really thought he was an okay guy. (I’m not on Twitter or anything), so I didn’t know any of this had happened until Gus’ apology video, which caused me to google the incident, (which led me to Sabrina’s video.)
    What a fucked up story that’s sadly common for these types of guys who act like they’re so “cool and down to earth” in person, but really are just abusers in private. The only good thing that came from Gus’ apology is him bringing this situation to light for me, so I could unsubscribe.

    And holy fuck the ice pack video, I didn’t even make that connection …
    And I don’t think any apology is going to make him ok in many peoples eyes

    Going to keep this short. My mom has had her entire life affected by racism and misogyny in healthcare. This is no joke. Women shouldn't have to smile while we're suffering inside, be it physically or emotionally. Nobody in the world deserves to be dismissed the way my mom, who I would gladly spend 6 hours to make a dish that doesn't cause her body to be in pain, and so many others have for years now.

    I don’t know much about the symptoms about ectopic pregnancies but it’s something girls are warned about quite a lot, from a time that’s pretty young. At least where I’m from.
    In general there are like a million conditions that can cause extreme pain in the lower organs so I find it even stranger that he didn’t believe her.
    There’s kidney stones, kidney infections, menstrual cramps so painful that opioid pain relief is required (rarely), and anyone who’s has a UTI or a IUD inserted knows they are painful asf.
    I’m not sure about STIs but they can’t have such a bad reputation for no reason… I’ve heard chlamydia isn’t too bad?

    Yea, summed it up pretty well. This whole situation had me questioning my previous stance that I can sperate the person from the product. But I think Gus being a shitty person also tanked the quality of his product. In the past it was all lighthearted and relatable jokes. But this lends a new light on all of the videos and takes away a lot of that lightheartedness, relatability, and sarcasm. Through this, much of the content just feels cold.

    Gus isn't a villain for not wanting kids and wanting to break up if she didn't abort. But he didn't have to be so cruel and unsupportive. Even if you're on the brink of breaking up, leaving your GF alone when she is having life threatening surgery is so so messed up

    I think because of the private nature of the original situation, the timing, and the mature way Sabrina talked about it, Gus could have cut his losses and gotten through it without a huge stain on his reputation. But his escalating response to it all really showed us his worst side and it's so uncomfortable to try to go back to the good guy funnyman. I hope that it was helpful for Sabrina to engage publicly where she had people to back her up against gaslighting.

    Wow, I'm so glad I stumbled upon your channel! I love hearing rational, open minded opinions from rational & open minded people. especially about this horribly sad situation.
    I agree most of it should have been able to be handled offline rather than through videos and tweets... I just can't imagine the added stress to Sabrina if she still had to keep this to herself. if she healed in any way coming forward with her trauma, I'm a stickler for giving her props to be strong enough to share that with the world. I truly just wish her the best.

    The medical system in my country doesn't really go much better, with many unexperienced "professionals" just wanting to give patients some light medicine and tell them off in the most "if I solve your problem, you won't pay another appointment" way possible. Even worse is: if you're on the verge of crying, you're exaggerating; if you're holding back the tears, it's not serious enough because you're not visibly crying and either way you just lose; the problems then pile and pile up, with each time help is asked being a time someone completely apathetic to the situation picks it up, offers a non-solution with utmost confidence and you just keep dying mentally and/or physically.
    I think it really doesn't help that staff rotates a lot in hospitals, so you might come talk to a doctor about something specific, they don't care and send you on your way, but you could come back another time and they could start understanding that it's a serious problem... until you realize the entire staff is different on the other day you come, so you get another person who doesn't care (even if they read what the other doctor wrote for your previous appointment, because to them it's just words devoid of any weight).
    Women get dismissed as drama queens thirsting for attention and men get dismissed because they should "suck it up and be manlier"; it's honestly surprising things still are the way they are, considering how many people have so many issues of not being helped within a system that is theoretically designed to help people. Worst part is, I don't think I ever got an honest "I don't know" from a doctor - it becomes a system where the mistrust gets built more and more because they clearly are lying about knowing the solution, but never bring themselves to tell the truth... and I could say telling the truth would make it easier for them to not be held accountable for stupidities, but they'll never be held accountable anyway. I don't mean that it's impossible to sue this behavior, but the bureaucracy is so tiring, that simply getting a minimal amount of justice done through the lawful ways takes literal months to *maybe* produce the expected result - that is, if they don't hire a better lawyer to pull an obscure law out of their ass and completely save their client from accusations of negligence.
