However, at ca. 5:59 you say you want to have the playing technique "sul tasto" and explain that this was bowing closer to the brigde - which is, sorry, wrong: the italian word for bridge is "ponte", while "tasto" signifies the finger board. The sound you get in your clip is clearly the one achieved by playing closer to the bridge, so "sul ponte" would be correct. (Playing sul ponte gives you a weaker fundamental, but more harmonics, resulting in a "sharp" sound, while playing "sul tasto" weakens the harmonics and strengthens the fundamental frequency of the note.) This just to avoid confusion. I hope that the maker of your "Stradivari Cello" didn't cause that mix up. 😊

Your channel is incredible and teaching me so much about Dorico in the way that I want to use it (taking advantage of my many VSTi's in creative ways!). I'm honestly learning more from you than Dorico's own channel, but don't tell them I said that ;) I have a request for some future videos on a similar topic! 1 - Advanced Expression Maps (deeper dive into differences between base and add-ons, and all the other complicated options available); and also more on combining articulations if the library does support this, or if you have a kontakt instrument and wish to double up if possible (combining shorts & longs etc). And 2 - Percussion Maps! They're really a head-scratcher for me, but I'd love to figure out how to use some of my alternative percussion libraries which use articulations normally unavailable. For example I want to use scraped percussion, bowed percussion, and various techniques like rubs, swarms, brushes, superballs. I have libraries with all these samples available and more, but I have no idea how to invoke them using the percussion maps. I tried setting something up following the same principles you taught here for a scraped cymbal library, but it doesn't seem to work the same way. So I'd love to learn more about that. Thanks for the amazing content, it's really changing everything for my workflow!

I started building one for CinePerc cymbal scrapes, and I was able to get a few working, but then I realized they have different sized cymbals in the same patch. So now I'm at a juncture trying to figure out if I should turn it into a "kit" of cymbals, and how to notate this, so they could use the same playback technique labels (such as simply "scrape") but I could then just swap for different sizes. Anyway this is really just scratching the surface of the complexity with percussion maps I've encountered - food for thought maybe when it comes to working on a tutorial for it. I'd love to hear what solutions you have for us! :)
Could you also please make a video about playback options overrides and conditions part of expression maps? Also, instead of key switch, could you slow some examples of using CC to trigger different articulations? Many thanks.
The Expression Map option moved around between different versions of Dorico. So, it wasn't always in the same menu. I'd recommend that you click the 'Help' menu at the top of your screen and type 'Expression' into the search bar. Then, you'll probably be able to find it...
What is the importance of expression maps? I use noteperformer, so I've never messed with expression maps. Is there any reason to create your own? What's your experience/opinion on noteperformer? I am interested in learning how to use Cubase, but it seems like it is difficult to transfer music between dorico and cubase. All of my composing has been in dorico thus far. Except a few pieces that I started in garageband. Do you think it's beneficial to learn how to use cubase?
Hey there, thanks for your message. I’ve been traveling - but here’s my perspective… expression maps are the key to controlling how your virtual instruments sound. Experienced composers want their notation to be rendered accurately and expression maps are the key to controlling that. I don’t use noteperformer, but I get the impression that it’s a useful tool for those who prefer it. If you work in Dorico, I think Cubase will be the easiest transfer available. But, it’s true that the transfer is not always super-easy. Cubase (or any DAW) is only necessary if you need features like audio files, advanced mixing, bussing or host automation (to name a few). Cubase is also superior for writing to specific edit points in film and TV.
I will do a video on this. But, essentially we can use the note off keyswitches to trigger the "end note" key switches available (for example) in NI Session Guitarist series. The library would need to have an "end note" key switch to do this.
Yes, I do! In fact it's one of my favorite features. When I export MIDI from a Dorico project, the MIDI notes are even exported with the negative compensation delays printed into the MIDI timing. This could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your workflow, but I love it :)

Well, in a Dorico expression map there is only one neg. delay value per articulation. But, you can choose to add multiple articulations (e.g. multiple legato playing techniques). You can set it up to handle that kind of flexibility if needed. It can be tedious, but I still think Dorico offers the most flexible system of anyone out there...
Minor point, sul tasto is bow near or over the end of the finger board; sul ponticello is bow near the bridge. Excellent video.
