Awesome build! I do have some critiques that would help the bow be more precise and a little quieter. The string stop shouldn't touch the string while the string is at rest, as that defeats the purpose of the stop completely. The stop is meant to dampen string vibration and quiet the bow, and if it's too far back and touches the string before it needs too, it will make the bow louder and transfer the string vibration to the riser. Keep it about a business card's thickness away from the string when the bow is at rest. The second thing is that the timing of the cams seems off (based solely on how they look when at rest). I would personally like to see full draw sequence of the bow before making any judgment on that though. Using a device to hold the bow for you and draw it back repeatedly to watch the timing of the cams and if any other parts touch something they don't need to would be helpful. Remember, this isn't me criticizing your skills, just some suggestions to make it better. Keep on building!

Heck, I was IMPRESSED with your last homemade compound bow. I just realized before writing this, that you made the wooden riser one before that I liked, and blown away by, your furnace and crucible are well done also. From the sound of your bow, I'm willing to bet it's about 50-70 pounds of pull draw weight and 60-70% let-off let us know if you ever take it hunting and please shoot video of it. STANDING OVATION!!!!!!
His let-off can't be very good as you see his bow arm shaking at full draw. That is a sign that it is either not giving much let off, or that the bow poundage is excessive and the let off is not enough.
I might actually try this for my senior project. Using a variety of manufacturing methods I've learned while in college like sandcasting, milling, cnc machining, 3D printing if I really wanna go overboard i could probably make the fiberglass limbs in our composites lab too it'll be like the culmination of all the things I've learned over the years.
This guy does more with basic hand tools than some can do with machine tools,Ive watched his vids from the first mini crossbows he made,I cant believe he made it ALL,Of coarse not the bolts & nuts,But casting the aluminum.BRAVO

I made a compound bow about 20 years ago. It had riser made of white oak and limbs made of car leaf springs. One of the biggest challenges were cams, I made them from plywood which had to be strengthened in many ways to avoid splitting. To design draw length and let off to some reasonable values needed some thought and calculation... As a string I used a single piece of steel wire, nothing fancy there. Finally draw weight was about 50-60lbs and bow worked well. First cams didn't last long but second ones were strong enough.

And I would say this is a good starting now that I could pass down to my son when he is older.But the package was missing the release and a nock was missing from one arrow.Dealing with customer support was terrible. They suggested I buy a new release rather than correct their own quality control issue because it’s to expensive for the. to ship it out from China.Update: manufacturer got back to me and resolved the issue. I retract the above statement.

Nice craftmanship. However I'd like to point out few things that I spotted. 1. You are clearly not pulling the string all the way so that the let-off from the cams kicks in. This might be an issue with the draw weight or with the draw lenght, video doesn't really show which. If it is the lenght, the problem is most likely the cam design. Alternatively a slightly shorter string will make the cams hit the stops earlier. This however will add more preload tension to the bow, unless you also add a little lenght to the cables. Not ideal solution, but might be good enough for this build. 2. Draw weight is clearly too large for you. 3. As everyone else is saying, please don't use wooden arrows with a compound! And always wear safety goggles when shooting, especially as this is a homemade bow.
You can use wooden arrows with a low draw weight, but given the fact that hes not drawing enough to get any let off im assuming its a large poundage. Hes also shaking a lot.

You know, we play games like Fallout 4 and you can make weapon modifications (or with game mods) craft modern and complex machined weapons out of scrap and you always think "there's no way that would be possible in real life". Videos like this prove that the only thing those games get wrong is the time that would be required to make them.

What do you mean? He casted most of the stuff with aluminium, and used some old skies. For the strings I have no idea, but probably nothing fancy, just a lot of treads.

Skipping through all the bicycle rim Bowes very nice work! I think you could have gone a little lighter with the aluminum parts, think the aluminum would have run OK. But wow what a nice bow to hang on your wall. I Especially liked the measuring tape spring with the arrow holding fork part. Sweet.

@ 8:00 all that effort to cast the outline of the cams in Aluminum when you had to drill them out of the other half anyway? Just place the paper pattern on some aluminum stock or sheet and drill them out to get a finished product, bypassing the time spent cutting the patterns out of plywood, then all that work and energy spent casting them!

@GrahamDoesMagic what choice of metal/alloy would you suggest, or would you have made everything from wood the right types of wood would be a fine choice, maybe carbon fibre cams would reduce the friction on the wood, I think maybe an aluminium plate between the wooden limbs and a finished laminated wood top layer ?? plus the metal he was smolting was aluminium . a soft metal.
It is not that simple. In a compound bow eccentric cams affect on draw weight, draw length and how draw weight changes during the draw. I made a compound bow a long time ago. It has limbs made of car leaf spring steel which is very stiff, but because of the leverages they bend only couple of cm's at full draw. Bow of this video seems to have some problems on how cams and limbs fit together, or they are not correctly set.
@@andiders well it's obvious in the video this bow draw weight is way to heavy for that wood arrow. That could do some serious damage to his face, arm or hand if it exploded. Seen it happen bout 25 years ago at an indoor range, guy blew up a wood shaft and part of it came back thru his hand and pierced his chest.. it's a bad day when it happens..
Andiders is doesn’t need to pierce his chest to kill him and plus I fail to understand how it’s so hard to believe that a arrow can split on half with out having to come out of the bow😂😂 check ur definition of physics😭👍

Graham Lewis, arms are made of an old ski... looks stiff to me too.

How did it pierce his chest? The bow shoots it's force one way, how can that force suddenly redirect so it pierces his chest? That would defy physics.

The meaning of a compound bow is that it's more usable and easier to use, the compound bow should do all the work, for you, this one does not.

@Thomas Simpson Probably because he did a casting mold instead of actually hammering it out. The metal has no real elasticity since it's not truly one piece of metal.
Hahaha, mine snapped when the cable gone off rails,limb cracked, only kept the magnesium riser & pulley for future project
