To Davy Lim, I am so sorry to hear that. While I have never been there, I really hope to go. ( I live in Florence Alabama.) I have watched so many videos of all the artist there, I feel I already know them. I have to say your work is amazing and also am a big fan of Agnes also..I can't even begin to comprehend why any mayor would want to do such a thing and jeopardize the artist market which would greatly decrease tourist dollars and also the shops there. Maybe next election you can get a mayor to make things right.. I know that not only are you an awesome artist but a compassionate man as well. The artists still have their place de tertre..( 25% of it ,in reality, because the restaurants claim the lion's share of the sq.from easter until november.. even though we pay more per M2 than the restaurants) The town council also rubber stamps authorisation for surrounding 'galleries' to sell imported cheap mass-produced 'art' imported from chinese sweat shops to naive tourists thinking they investing in local artists. ....but the show goes on!

El alcalde de Paris utiliza como principal argumento para aumentar de un 350 por ciento el derecho de los artistas a ejercer sobre la Plaza, el hecho de que hay una gran afluencia turística, sin reconocer que nosotros los artistas somos una de las principales causas de esta gran afluencia de turistas. En realidad los negocios que viven gracias a nosotros tendrían que pagarnos.
@MrWaterColour No way anyone can abolish the artists sq.the mayor pushed through a rent increase for the artists working at the sq...and some have had trouble paying the increase,but the artist's square is the motor of the economy of the neighbourhood..take it away and the galleries ,the cafes the restaurants all go bust.Daniel Vaillant will not be re-elected,and he will be remembered as a fake socialist..full of hot air.

It is unbelievable that the Mayor would try to raise the rent by so much there can be no justification for such a rise. Perhaps he just hates art and artists but Paris will lose something of great significance if they go.
The Mayor sounds like he is a loan shark! and do's not deserve to have artists bringing in the tourists of the world spend there money even in Paris itself, i would be ashamed of the Mayor or other mayors who taxed the artists in this way! instead they should be proud of the artists and encourage others to apply. After all art is what made Paris what it is today.
There is a new mayor! New boss, same as the old boss!The artists still pay more per sq.m than the so-called restaurants who take over the entire sq; in peak season.The artists work in 1msq spaces.Even the abandoned dogs at the SPA have more space. The prices for artists rise every year...this year 2016 has been a total economic disaster for the artists,and when we don't work the cafes don't work.No montmartrois would dream of eating in some of these frozen-food rip -off joints.There are NO michelin star restos here.I just wish Gordan Ramsey would visit this place and compare the value for money he gets from a free-hand portrait and the food served at these rip -off joints.I repeat,no montmartrois eats at the place de tertre.Tourists ,(many of whom are waiting for portraits to be finished) eat and drink there.I repeat,the restos take over all the square in the peak season and we are left with 1m2sq. to work in.Some these cafes don't even allow the artists to use toilet facilities,unless we 'consume' something.The best cafe is the Sabot Rouge.the artists eat and drink there,and we can use the toilets. The artists also get a small reduction in price for the "plat de jour".As for the rest they are using the artists but have no respect for the artists..they are parasites and the artists are the victims..The "petit comptoir" also welcomes and respects artists and the fast food is ok and prices are fair.Also a nice Tv for soccer fans! As for the Mayor....he looks after the guys who have power and money.
Je découvre seulement maintenant ce projet d'augmentation de la redevance des artistes de Montmartre, je ne sais pas où en est ce projet, je vis à Paris et en voyant cette video j'ai eu honte d'être français. Cette mesure est purement scandaleuse, sans aucun sens. Il faudrait rappeler à Monsieur Vaillant que des artistes de la trempe de Toulouse-Lautrec ont fait les riches heures de Montmartre, et que la présence d'artistes sur cette place fait parti de notre patrimoine.
Ne touchez pas à la Place du Tertre. Cessez de défigurer Paris et les quartiers populaires au profit des commerces. Ne céder pas au marchands du temple.

I wanted to come to France cause I am an artist and I've heard about this place.I don't really care about the afiel tower or the louvre but I care about a piece of art which is written in history in front of my eyes good or bad . so mr mayor i am sorry if you triped over a rock in that square and now you wanna close it but I am glad to tell you as a tourist I was gonna spent money on your country just to visit there.
