Latinos and the Far Right

- A white supremacist of color seems like a contradiction. Yet recent years have brought to light unsettling examples, including an Afro-Latino leader of the Proud Boys and a Latino mass shooter with neo-Nazi sympathies. These men are among a small but growing number of Latinos in the United States who gravitate toward the far right and adopt radical views on race, Christian nationalism, and immigration.
In an eye-opening new book, Defectors, Emmy Award-winning journalist Paola Ramos uses interviews, historical context, and expert analysis to shatter the longtime understanding of Latinos as a political monolith and uncover a diversity of opinion that makes room for white nationalists and avowed racists.
On Thursday, October 10, at 3 p.m. ET, Ramos will join political scientist Eduardo Gamarra and former FBI special agent Michael German to discuss the rightward shift among Latinos. In a conversation moderated by Mireya Navarro, editor in chief of Brennan en español, these experts will explore the complex Latino electorate, a group that is growing in importance with each election.
Produced in partnership with Brennan en español
Speakers:
Paola Ramos, Author, Defectors: The Rise of the Latino Far Right and What It Means for America; MSNBC Contributor
Michael German, Former Special Agent, Federal Bureau of Investigation; Fellow, Brennan Center Liberty & National Security Program
Eduardo Gamarra, Professor of Politics and International Relations, Florida International University

As an immigrant, I see contradicting ideas regarding understanding why we strive to migrat to the United States and, once here rather than blaming the corporations profeteer, they begin to blaming others immigrant for their plight. Furthermore, as was suggested, many, among the migrants who have come to the United States in the last 3 decates have to do with US politic in Latin America. Many were ultrarightist in their countries politic. Also, their religious mindset and their literacy levels is also influencial and the role of the media in creating confusion and stupidity.
Most Brazilians, Argentinians support Trump because the majority of them have Italian or Portuguese background. In Canada those communities also support bolsonaro and Milei.
Salvadorans also love authoritarian style of bukele
Hispanic/Latino "à" /is two fold H. represents who believe they are White . L.represents non-white.
We are ignoring a major factor. That is color. Latinos who are white appearing are the majority the right wing Latinos. The leader of the Proud Boys being an exception. Latinos who are Black or Indigenous in appearance don't do as well economically and don't have social access to the same spaces as those who are white appearing. Hence the system and belief in "mejorando la raza."
This is why I’m Anti immigration as an African American. All they do is bring their racist ideologies here and support white supremacy . This panel is evidence, why is there no Afro-Latino Representation. Immigrants shouldn’t be apart of civil rights when you choose to come here.
Great discussion! I grew up with my Chicano family here in Az. I grew up with my Tio who adopted and raised me. I traveled and went to college and realized the racism I grew up in. Since 2016 some of my relatives including the man who raised me are unrecognizable to me I was raised Catholic (now atheist) but now they hate Catholics and are Evangelist, anti-vaxxers, and believe nothing but conspiracies. None of us talk..there has been violence too. It's been difficult and wonder how this happened. I blame religion. The Tim Walz rally here in Tucson was filled with Mexican/Latino/Hispanic representation 💙🇺🇸💙🇺🇸
1) There is a deep misunderstanding of socialism, capitalism, and communism. I hate labels like "left" and "right" because it masks truly what particular political parties engage in when it comes to influence, power, and legislation. To think that the mistreatment of people come from a form of government is just naive. Corruption exists in every government. Power & privilege are older than any form of government. 2) I am Afro Latina (Cubana). Latinos are NOT a race. Within Latino culture you have white, black, Asian, Jewish, etc. 3) Enrique Tarrio appears to be Afro Latino. Like many of us growing up in the US , he didn't have strong community that looked like us. Growing up in the Northeast I had limited experiences with Latinos that physically resembled me. But when I moved to Miami, one of the first things I experienced was exclusion from many Cubans there that are predominantly white. 4) Cuba is more black than white! The fact that a white Cuban's first awareness of Cuban blackness was when she left Miami is very hard to believe. What story is your mama telling you? Study Cuba's history. We are black not white! 5) When immigrant children do not have the models that look like them, they assimilate to whatever group they may feel included. Because Cubans are multiracial and multicultural, you need to dissect and dig deeper into racial dynamics. 6) Latinos play colorblind. They love that game. The problem with the terms "person of color" is that you place all folks in a bucket and race matters. Enrique, like some of you on the panel, has the case of internalized oppression with some mental health problems and the feeling of never belonging. That along with the ability to influence while being a token for his organization can lead to a lot of harm. I also think that Enrique was a scapegoat. Where was the federal government when bomb threats from Cuban extremists terrorized Miami in the 70s & 80s? 7) Agricultural Cuba resembles very much the United States' South. Slave trade, wealth off the backs of others, etc. What's different is that when Cuba was freed from Spain it had established a very black government. Study what happened thereafter and how the US has always meddled in Cuban politics. 8) My experience as a daughter of immigrant Cuban parents from the 60s was that I never felt included in Latino culture and I learned early on as an Afro Latina to be "black" and to learn resiliency via my African Ancestors and yet my Ancestry DNA has me at 51% Portuguese, I've never felt white, privilege and included with white people. I don't have the ability to "pass" as many Latinos do. How on earth other black and brown latinos assimilate to right wing people can only be explained by Latino's colorblindness that is deeply engrain in our history and internalized oppression learned in the USA.
I wouldn't say "misunderstanding." This is plain and pure ignorance. Defining the Democratic Party as communist is pure ignorance. People who say this have no idea what communism, socialism, or capitalism are. They don't know. Also, the dominant group in the Democratic Party is pro-capitalism; they look more like moderate Republicans. In arguing with these people, we need to educate them, and let them know that the Democratic party has been in the government for many years, the best economies have been under these governments, and never but never the Democratic party has in its doctrine or program to abolish private property.
You have lived my WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE! My mother's family is Louisiana Creole and my father Afro-Cubano. Due to their phenotypes, my mother is often thought to be my Hispanic parent. My maternal family is very racially ambiguous and my father's clearly Black. I will disagree that the detrimental colorblindness of Latinos was learned in the US. It began when the Iberians first set foot in Africa, centuries before the founding of the US and the trans Atlantic Enslavement of Africans. It was brought to the Americas by the Portuguese and Spanish before there was a US. More Africans were trafficked to Brazil than any other place. The Casta Chart was also established before the US was a country. As far as the Cubans are concerned, many were racist before they left Cuba. They were the gentry and the landowners. Pre revolution Cuba looked much like the US plantation system. According to my father, life for most Black Cubans became better post revolution. White Cubans in Miami would most certainly disagree.
Colombia is notoriously a classist and machaista society, However there’s an evolution and that’s why Gustavo Petro is our current president. There’s a lot of people who identify with conservatives. I personally being Latina from Colombia I identify with independents and democrats. I identify with the ideology of Bernie Sanders, AOC, President Obama & Biden, and with our future president Kamala Harris!
Most right wingers from Colombia and Venezuela started to emigrate to Miami when Santos was the president. Of course, only those well off could do it
I'm typng this response from my home city of Medellin for past 7 years. I'm from Arizona originally. People here in Medellin really dont like Petro. He has put inflationary practices in place. Especially with gas prices. Colombia is not a rich country and the poorer people are being hurt the most by this policy. If you raise gas prices (and Petro does it every quarter) it raises prices of eggs, areppas basically everything but the peoples wages. I think it all started with Biden stopping a ton of new exploration for oil and the US outbids Colombians for their own oil they drill for here. Last year the US bought 4% of Colombian oil. Just as example. Latinos I grew up with in Arizona were mostly from Mexico. They are very entreprenureal and very conservative. I really dont know of any white suprimacy people at all! IK think it is a fable at least in the western portion! This guy talking about white supremacy is talking about heritage. Every country have it and want to hold on to it! Not exclusive to the USA.
Of course you are a Socialist!!

white sup😂 you should check out the graveyard 🪦 might have better luck on finding one. 😂
But if you’re looking at the what laws have been expanded by the gov around 21 it’s not a group or far 👉 white.
It’s just a better way of saying everyone is now is included entitled to their government 👀😞
Excellent panel and discussion. Look forward to reading Paola’s book. Always great to see young people like Paola who are intellectual, inquisitive, analytical. It makes me feel hopeful about the future of generations to come. Hispanos para HARRIS WALZ 2024. Democracia sobre partido.
Have y’ll look into the influence of the Heritage Foundation and Free market ideas on Think Tanks in Latin America?
Yes I would love to hear them talk about how much money is spent on spanish speaking misinformation.
Free market ideas? Did I miss something in my readings of Project 2025 Mandate, which mandate is on the cover. Christian Nationalism has a few associated names like Great Race Theorists, Supreme one party power that entails the rewriting of the Constitution. Oligarch Victor Orban has met and stayed at Mara Lago twice this year. Radical Right Extremism is easily identified when JD Vance himself called Trump the "American Hitler" just before Senatorial bid.
two words: Koch money.
Puerto Rico has a new emergent far right party Proyecto Dignidad, they and some members of the PNP which is the traditional conservative party are backed in part by El Instituto de Libertad Económica, its a fairly new Think Tank and they receive funds from Atlas Network and The Fraser Institute.
@@lotsinganimedesthat’s more libertarian than far right. Something’s are similar but it’s not comparable to conservatism.
They are after the sense of power and hierarchy and being above others!!! Those are basic unevolved instincts! Education and a sense of belonging are keys to counteract that!
Many of these young hispanics are not listening to their piers. It is almost like they do not understand the stakes because once democracy is lost the truth of what is really happening will become apparent. Trumpism is using race as a strawman. This is a fight of the caste system. A battle between rich & the poor. Trumpism is a fight between who has power & who does not. Ultimately the rich will enslave & subjugate all of us if we do not see what the true enemy is. Citizens United & the ULTRA CONSERVATIVE SCOTUS has been bought & both our democracy & religious freedom is on the line.
Or maybe they want to preserve the white population of the united states because they love those people?
Maybe not approving of mass immigration is out of love have you considered it?
Lots of rascist latino cops.
At my school, I came across a phenomenon, specially among white or light skin latino children where they were ashamed of speaking their native language. Of course, I can see why that could happen which is associated with the idea of avoiding discrimination for speaking their mother's tongue. I think that the Cuban rabit anticommunism has played a big role in having a 30% or so of latinos to identifying themseves with the Republican Party and Trumpism.
From my experience those are just the kids that are not very fluent in the language because they were mostly born and raised in the US. Same thing happens with black latinos up north. They are not ashamed they just feel more comfortable and efficient speaking English rather than trying to remember how to say something in Spanish.
Let’s be honest, if we have Spanish grandparents or great grandparents on both sides we always considered ourselves white. Never had problems with Anglo-whites but sometimes we did have problems with mixed blacks and mestizos indigenous. Latino or Anglo American. There is a white shame involved, not surprising it’s a phenomenon here too. Brown and black Latinos also have shame, hence let’s not talk about race we’re all “Hispanics.” That’s not the reality. Let’s be proud of our racial diversity. What’s wrong with that? Let’s be truthful. Many white Latinos would be attracted to the likes of Nick Fuentes.
"Many white Latinos" 🤣 always trying to be us
Nick Fuentes is the 'poster boy' for Far-Right politics within Latino, Hispanic & Chicano communities. 🇲🇽🇨🇺🇦🇷
These panelists gave the greatest ad for the Trump campaign imaginable, their condescension to hispanics is unreal.

"Far right" the dog whistle for the race card users 🤣😂😂
Far right is a euphemism for pathological liars.
White supremacists be more diverse than this group of experts lol
This was, to my mind's eye, an excellent presentation and well thought out from beginning to end. The presenters answered the questions that I had in mind including, but not well enough on the African Latinos and their color-coded consciousness as descendants brought to the Americas as slaves and, especially those in Santo Domingo, Cuba, Venezuela.
You start with the wrong assumption that Latinos are a unified community. You need to segment Latinos by country. Cubans, Venezuelans, and Colombians are more prone to be part of far-right groups. I don't think that it is a fitting problem. It has to do more with the traumas from the political environment inherited from their country of origin. Years ago, I don't know now, Cubans were enrolling to be part of the Minute Man group chasing people who were crossing the border. There is a documentary about this.
They made it clear Latinos are not unified by touching on colorism. I listened to the entire video 🎉
@@Michele.Alejandraa its not about colorism. It is about nationality; is not the same the history and culture of Mexico than the history and culture of other hispanoamerican countries, for example.
You seem to be conflating the terms 'white' and 'blanco.' The concept of the 'white race' has its roots in European thought, particularly during the Enlightenment period when classifications of race were being formalized by scholars and pseudoscientists, often in Northern and Western Europe, including Germanic and Anglo-Saxon contexts. The term 'blanco,' on the other hand, originates from the Spanish language and was historically used by Spaniards, particularly during the colonial era, to differentiate themselves from other ethnic groups such as Moors (North African Arabs and Berbers) following centuries of Moorish influence in Spain. These terms were used in different historical and cultural contexts, reflecting distinct ideas about identity, race, and ethnicity.
Good point. Now tell us how it changes this discussion. (That’s NOT sarcasm.)
Have you been to spain?
Highlighting Anti-Communism as a massive factor needs to happen more often, thank you
Spain is next to Africa
Apparently many Americans don't know anything about Santa Anna and Simon Bolivar.
The most odd thing I find is regarding Latinos as some non white/European people when it's just an umbrella term for the multi racial, multi ethnic & multi national community of Spanish speaking people of the Americas & perhaps including the Portuguese speaking Brazilians. Even the Latinos on this panel here are clearly white/European.
Far rigth and "latinos" most be summarized with one word: Cubans
Has Kamala gone on Telemundo? So prefer over Univision management change this year.
That's the big problem for hispanoamericans in USA: Telemundo and Univision. If we want to progress here, that garbage should disappear.

He's a psychopath too.

My ancestors all came from the area known today as the UK. I have long felt deep shame for racism in America.
But tЯump’s given us a whole new reason to be ashamed to identify as “white”.
As a black American I assure you that you are doing no one any good being ashamed that you’re white. In fact you do more harm. You end up infantilizing black people. Forget white privilege, hierarchy of oppression. It isn’t a binary choice between guilt and white supremacy. You are not responsible for deeds of people who belong to the same group you belong to. ❤
Yea thats just you bud, i have no shame, guilt, or sympathy for any of the tears.
I am a Latino Man and as a Latino man I do not find anything on the( LEFT )that as a man I would benefit from.
The left usually has socialist and communist leaning views.
And because i lean towards capitalism
I have absolutely nothing in common with the Democrat party or the left. But I will name a few of the things I do not have anything in common with
1.) LGBT
2.) feminism
3.) socialist
4.) communist
5.) DEI
Yes and I believe that many of the Latinos also do not find any benefit in these things that I’ve named.
I am pretty sure they are many more. but to name a few of the things that I have absolutely unequivocally no benefit in my life. We as American people live in the United States look for things that are going to benefit us. whether you’re Latino or whatever nationality you are benefit is key.🗝
Thank you . BC for justice 🙈🙉🙊
I think you have no tolerance for people who don’t share your views. Understand that there are social democratic nations were things like healthcare, education, wages are designed so every one can benefit from it and is not just for the well off or millionaires. As immigrants we cannot forget that everyone deserves a chance!
Of course! You don’t support anything that is not centered on you and doesn’t directly benefit you or places you above others. That’s the key difference between the left (empathy/compassion) and the right (selfishness)!
Of course! You are the kind who doesn’t support anything that doesn’t center you as a man and make you dominant over others! That’s the key difference between the left (empathy/compassion/community) and the right (paranoia/individualism/selfishness).
Do you believe in the corporate bailouts, tax exemptions and rebates the state and federal governments so readily handout? Just curious, because that’s not capitalism. It’s socialism for corporations.
