Excellent. CEE and Kurtis in the morning at 07:00 with my coffee, as I prepare to get up, then Swan Valley with Max in the evening, as I'm getting ready to drop off at 22:00. All the best from the UK.

Those holders are exactly like my Collis Magic Chuck. I do however like the ejection tool for your. Mine just has the slot for the taper wedge. It looks like it has as much slop as mine though. That is quite a cute little radial.

A competing brand (Polish ?) of QCTH, each bit holder had a conical slip ring ( or taper, can't remember ) that mated up with a conical seat in the main tool adaptor when the vertical pressure took up the play in the Z axis, ( 0.1 - 2 mm Z ?? ).
Conical slip ring caused each bit holder to center in adaptor, but only while drill bit was under Z pressure. The 2 Russian FOGs in the tool & die shop liked it.

Very nice little radial there Max.
With a tickle up will be a pretty thing too.
Extremely useful things radial arm drills.
That quick change set up could prove useful,
Quicker than bashing out morse tapers certainly.

You could also modify the tool holder by adding a little taper at the very end. Then put some threads on the end of the tooling and make a nut with the same tapper and set screw so you can adjust the amount of engagement. But flame spraying would be a lot faster. just an idea if you wanted to get the most amount of accuracy you could get.

I have several made by Archer in the UK, available used very cheaply now its basically obsolete tooling.
They were designed to be changed out without stopping the spindle, something that you definitely wouldn't be allowed to do in industry nowadays. They seem to have about the same amount of slop in the design.
I think they would be good drilling using jigs made up with drill bushings, or if the part had the holes laid out accurately and piloted on say a Bridgeport with a dro, them moved to a big drill to get large holes in quickly.

    • @swanvalleymachineshop
      @swanvalleymachineshop  7 місяців тому +1

Yes , a great time saver for repetition work . Grabbing them with small tool is not to bad , would not do it with larger drill bits ! 👍

    • @dutchgray86

@@swanvalleymachineshop the Archers have a free spinning collar on the MT tool holders so you can grab that before releasing the chuck.

Hello Max. I have the same 'Magic Chuck" as Josh, made by Collis. They are very handy. I always thought they should have had optional holders that had a much closer fit for spotting holes. Now I'll get to see the results of that once you spray and machine yours. One thing I noticed near the end of the video with your chuck is that it was wobbling quite a bit. The chuck itself should run dead true. Maybe yours was bent at some point in the past? One other thing I noticed was when you lowered the arm on your drill the elevation motor and gearbox lifted up quite a bit as they were pushing down on the arm. You had your back turned to it when it happened. It was enough movement that it looked like it might fall off. I'm sure you know about it but I thought I should mention it just in case. That drill will be a handy tool. I still use mine quite a bit even though I have my HBM running. Have a good weekend. Ken

I've found the' drop' on radial arm spindles and some milling spindles can be a pain in the backside, I put it down to backlash in the gear feed
Also when you get wear on the radial arm, you lock it and the damn thing moves somewhat

This tooling reminds me of self centering tap and die tooling. It can wobble until it contacts the work, then it’s steady. Maybe they understood that when designing this. I bought a new 1/2” Waltstrom R-8 quick change chuck for my mill about 20 years ago. I think I’ve used it a dozen times. Somehow, the anxiety of changing tools while it’s rotating at speed is too nerve wracking for me most of the time.

That is one Italian Metal Eating Mother!😂. I have a chinesium metal nibbling baby.😮. A wee bit of WD & scotch brite with elbow grease (as you usually do). Maybe a bit of fresh color to lighten it up, and you have a hole puncher for the rest of your days! SCORE!!! 😊. The quick change, looks like a couple of thousand of “shim” will help gobs, but…..if the hole is centered it doesn’t really seem to effect the overall drilling. For this project it would seem like a TLAR status applied. That Looks About Right 😊. Isn’t always critical for exacting accuracy, eh?

Looks like a good machine Max, took me back to the early 90's on an old Asquith. The play in the quick change is superb for reaming to ensure good size (guess you already know that). What, no changing tools with the spindle running??? Oh yeah, UA-cam 😂😂😂😂🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Hi Max, That quick change system saves a lot of time especially if used with a jig plate, the bushes centralise the holes without the need for a spotting drill and if you use removable bushes you can drill, counterbore, chamfer and tap a hole pretty rapidly. I like the idea of building up the adaptors to take a bit of the wiggle out. Nice little radial drill you got yourself there. Best wishes, Mal.

Yes taking out some of the play in the quick change tooling might be interesting, as well.

G'day Max. This an Excellent review on the Radial Arm Drill as well as the quick change tool holders. Drills holes, without problems. The only suggestion, because you have the knowledge & equipment is to build up all the worn insets by metal spraying, & grind them back for a Max close Tolerance fit, which will stop a lot of problems down the track.
