Ian us northern keepers never find you shed videos. Your adaptations to the new system fascinating. We used to ride in our combines small grain bin. Seeing all your new parts, terribly excited for you. The Massey is a pure treasure. Happy hunting!
Not boring at all. It's fascinating to follow your thought processes on the winter shed. I thought you would have issues when you installed the coolers in the location, so it's been fun to see you figure it out. Glad to see you're getting back on the combine. Cool project. And finally, your daughter's smile sure lights up that hunting shed. I hope she gets a nice buck.
I wrote a long essay on a previous video on ideas for the winter shed control system, which somehow didn't post properly and vanished, but one of the key points was the possibility of using the chiller evaporator fans to distribute the air in the shed, since you have the stacks lined up with them anyway. If you are able to get it distributed in lower energy use ways, that's best, but maybe wire it up where you can engage those fans when needed if you have hot spots in the middle. You might also consider doing remote mount thermostats or temperature sensors, so instead of just having a thermometer in the middle of the stacks, you can have a sensor on a long cord that you put out there, and it actually controls the system based on the center of room temperature instead of the wall temperature. My big idea was actually using a PLC with multiple indoor and outdoor temperature sensors to command everything, and switch between outside air cooling and using the chillers, but it was probably overkill lol
OMG, I can see you’re like a child in a sweet shop. 100% agree with your early remark. You have to think things through get those jobs done in your head and then you can play and my goodness me what a project that is I would love to have the chance to try something like that, that’s going to be a whole heap of fun and I look forward to seeing it on video. Keep up the great videos!! Not boring at all!well done enjoy your change of motion to winter beekeeping.
Hello Eian, definately not boring, it just makes me appreciate how lucky we are in the UK with our winters. However, we pay for it with our dull summers, with correspondinly lower honey yeilds. All the best, kind regards, Tony Marsh.
We had a 24 inch high speed fan hooked to a 40 foot long by 2 foot diameter wind sock for a heifer barn. It had 2 inch holes cut every foot for first 20 foot then 3 inch holes cut every foot the last 20 foot. Worked pretty good to disperse air along the whole backside of barn across all the pens
I wonder if they still have a little brood in some of the boxes yet to emerge. Maybe after they hatch, if there is some, the shed will be easier to cool. I saw that Brad still had brood not long ago. Have any of the kids got a deer yet?? We only got a nice doe this year but she will taste mighty fine.
Hot air rises maybe the ceiling Fans are pushing heat down, also the Exhaust should be from above to take out the hotter air, Mixing Air like u doing horizontally is likely a good idea also the Fresh air in should likely dump lower to floor to avoid mixing with upper stages , So to get the heat going up and out PROCESS
Ian I know I mentioned this a year or so ago about piping the duct work down where it comes in and it was shot down because cold air is heavier than warmer air. I agree with this but being a retired plumbing contractor and working on large hot water storage tanks if you don't pipe the cold water into the bottom of a tank the cold water will short cycle and take the easiest path and wind up only having a part of a large tank to have the hot water. I believe if you pipe in the cold air in the upper part of the building that only a small fraction makes it to the floor while the rest takes the short cut across the top of the building and out through your exhaust duct. This might be worth a little more looking into. I think your introduction of the cooling system is going to pay off also in the spring time when you are looking for the right window to set the bees out. Good luck in your overwintering this year I think your going to do great!
Finally going with a wind sock like setup. Use them in swimming pool and factories. They are effective and allow you to keep the air flow slow and smooth so more efficient over all.
Hi Ian I am a plumber especially high rise s rezidential buildings and I know what a degree plus or minus means at a big scale My Idea is for you to install some pipes for a better ventilation Those ceiling ventilators can't do much when you have so many " boxes of bees" and you need to extract hot air and bring in cold air locally It will solve many problems and nowadays you could control the temperature from your phone at least you could check it from your phone while ploughing the fields or milking the cows 😅 Man you are great
Following on from my previous comment, it is great to see the project you are working on. This takes me back to the 60s when I first started on the farm, and the first combine we had was an ' Allis Charmlers all crop trrailed bagger combine, blody hard work!!!. This and a second one completely fell apart at our second harvest, so we upgraded to one like yours, and we used the two fans from the Allis's back to back blowing down, with one of the TVO engines mounted on top as a blower to blow air theough the grain. Would it be possible for you to do more videos about your workshop and equipment through the off season with the bees? Happy days!!, Tony.
Ian We have ventilation tubes in our hog buildings that are like a heavy bag with holes down the length of it that slides on the fan tubes to distribute the air.
Why don't you turn the expendable inlet to blow towards the back wall to add it to the other one and increase the volume of air to the isles? That way it will cool it faster and keep the temps down. The old engine is finally coming together!!!! Thanks Ian!
Air moves easier up and down when we are talking about temperature. I am saying it is easier to blow air up or down than it is sideways moving hot and cold air. Put the fans in the middle of the rows in the center of the room and blow the cold air up. Air will enter and flow through the rows to the fans, and that will also lift the cold air up off the floor.
Good idea. Do you think one 50’ length with appropriate cut holes would do the same ? For example, smaller holes at first, bigger at end, or as long as I don’t cut too big of holes, the air pressure should be the same across all places, correct?
@ yes that would also work. As a matter of fact this method was used to even out the temperature in the passenger cabin of a passenger plane, the front row passengers had frozen feet and the back row one were too hot ( more than 10 Deg C difference front to back). The ducts were modified with an adjustable door to decrease flow close to the source and increase as you got farther away from the fan.
What is it about poking a fire is so fun for us guys? If I have a fire around, my productivity goes down drastically!!! 🤣 I was wondering about that engine. We get videos on the assembly and first start?
When it’s that cold outside? Would it work? If you just left the doors open at night? I could imagine them fans using quite a bit of electric. and it’s not boring we find your shed very interesting.
Have you tried changing the direction of the ceiling fans ? Possibly run a duct to the floor for the outside air. You have heat rising and if the fans are pulling up it might work better. Did you get rid of the hunting trailer, number one daughter looked pleased to be out hunting with dad.
Question for who ever: have my two hives wrapped in that usual black insulation you can buy for hives, and I’m finding one hive kinda pouring out of the entrance when the sun hits it for 20 mins a day, then they all just die. It’s -10C out, maybe even -15C and they’re still doing it. I observed them today and the sun hadn’t hit them yet and you just get a random bee here and there flying straight out up into the sky. The hive isn’t even that big, I needed to take the second brood box off but couldn’t get around to it. So it’s definitely too cold if anything in there, but they’re acting like it’s really hot - which it is not inside.
So the bees seem to like 5-7 degrees. If you cool the isles more will the bees try and warm things up to get back to 5-7 degrees? Are the bees telling you what they want?
That used to are bread and butter.. grinding 6 and 8 cylinder diesels. We even made pistons from airplane aluminum engines and propellers. Melting the right combination of it for the slow rotating engines... I'm thinking about the new ventilation with the holes for every passage.. well maybe it could work if you manage to spread the air to come out equally for every one. I think the right solution will come to you.. it's difficult to share valuable ideas watching it like this. I love solving those kind of problems.. but I think you are the same
MASSEY-HARRIS? Isn't it supposed to be Massey Ferguson? Sign painters might have been drinking when they labelled that machine. Who rebuilds engines nowadays? Just buy a new one! LOL
All the honey is sold... oxy treatments done... the season is over... Instead of taking a breath and relaxing. Now I want spring to hurry up so I can build more bees...😁😛🤑🤑🤑🤑🥸

Can't wait to hear the Massey running, it's gonna run better than new!

I enjoy watching you work out the kinks with your bee building. Keep it going
So beneficial to see the process. While we have bees in a very different environment the process to results is universal.
incredible the heat the bees generate. Very interesting channel

Thx for the 2”, 3” hole tip
You are going to keep us up to date on the engine build right!

They sell plastic ( like a bag) ductwork with holes in it
Not boring at all , very interesting ? Thanks
Holy shit you are one busy bee! Superbee...lol Great videos Ian. I owe yeah more than one coffee buy now...lol. Cheers
The 21!!! Been a few years since I’ve heard that thing run!
Finally going with a wind sock like setup. Use them in swimming pool and factories. They are effective and allow you to keep the air flow slow and smooth so more efficient over all.
0h boy the combine I was waiting for it

Lol, same here! Model 66 if I remember correctly. Miss that ladyl.

we have been waiting for engine rebuild
NEVER BORING!
Suggestion for your fan ductwork, step it down at intervals along the length to have a more even distribution of the air flow.
Good idea.

The seasons sure do fly by. Always something to do for the bees, though.
What is it about poking a fire is so fun for us guys? If I have a fire around, my productivity goes down drastically!!! 🤣 I was wondering about that engine. We get videos on the assembly and first start?
hoping you have a backup generator, looking good maybe less bees on the floor this year.
There are little smoke bombs you can use to check air flow. Back in the day, I saw them used during fire training.

Could you make both air inlets point the same direction, or are they glued together.
Could be you have mores hives in the shed than ever before
Yes I had a good year
You spend alote of time by that fire 😅
Oh man combine restoration videos please please!!!
Looks like less bee drop, too.
Great point! Early yet but heh.
So the bees seem to like 5-7 degrees. If you cool the isles more will the bees try and warm things up to get back to 5-7 degrees? Are the bees telling you what they want?
If I had worst air flow the isles would be 10!
Ha, well it was Harris that combined grain in the war effort :)

Your gonna have a power bill😅
Refrigeration is off , but the fans on full still
Continental?
Suck the hot air off the ceiling of the room.
Try to minimize your power consumption.
Kış geldi. Artık hayat sana güzel. 😄😝
