  • Even as one of the most iconic big wall destinations in Europe, the giant Paleozoic limestone walls of Picos de Europa are still a relative mystery to North American climbers. Yet with a deeply influential role in European climbing, routes that range in length to 19 pitches, and what has been called the hardest big wall free route in the world, the stunning lines of this undercrowded region make it ripe for free climbing discovery. This past fall, Eddie Bauer climbers Katie Lambert and Caroline George landed in the Spanish national park and joined up to climb the Murciana 78 (7c+) route on the same imposing Naranjo de Bulnes West Face that Caroline's mother Martine was the first woman to climb in 1971 via the Rabadá-Navarro (6c+) route. They discovered classic European climbs, Spanish mountain culture and a new zone ripe for adventure.

The first time I heard of Katie Lambert was photos of her climbing difficult lines on the granite domes of Tuolumne meadows,Yosemite.Later I watched the video of Katie and Mason Earl climbing Moonlight Buttress in Zion. She's such an amazing climber. So many strong women climbers today. Not like in the early 1980's.

Wonderful documentary but WHY do you have to use "flamenco" music as background? Picos de Europa is in the NORTH of Spain and it has more to do with celtic traditions than with the SOUTHERN flamenco. Flamenco and Spain the endless stereotype!!!!!
