    Great tips and guidelines, another one to mention, do a range check if you have a new transmitter, receiver or a new model.
    Cheers.

    This is some of the best advice I have ever seen in one video.
    Many many thanks for this, I am sure it will help everyone from a beginner like me to an expert who maybe has forgotten some of the more basic rules of maiden flying.
    I remember my very first flight lasted about two seconds as I hand launched it, put it straight up to full power and it Torque-Steered into a barrel role into the ground and promptly caught fire, as in my panic I did not reduce the throttle!! Soooo many mistakes in such a short time, but hopefully once the weather picks up and I am feeling up to it, I will have a better first flight with the aid of this advice.
    Have Fun Every One,
    Joe

    I print up a pre-flight checklist for my models and go through it . As I’ve got quite a few with different characteristics and don’t fly all that often , this helps a lot and works a lot better than relying on memory. I’ve lost one through not having a battery well secured and doing extreme manoeuvres. And having a switch in the wrong position has cost me too. It’s hard to find anywhere to fly around where I live and the temptation to do too many things at once and in a hurry needs to be resisted.
    Great video with good advice.

    I performed my 1st maiden flight ever, only three weeks ago. I wish I had seen this video before the event, I would have used this as a checklist. Fortunately, I had a more experienced pilot as my flight buddy. Who quickly noticed the reverse moving rudder as I did my preflight checks, assisted with the trimming, & when I asked, switched the rates for me. I was at the limit of my skills, just controlling a less than perfect plane.
    So I’m surprised that a “buddy” was only mentioned late in the video, my buddy played a large part in the survival of my model.

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  4 роки тому +2

      If you have an experienced flying buddy with you for the maiden then you shouldn't need this video ;)

    • @koalatails6391
      @koalatails6391 4 роки тому

      I shouldn’t, & didn’t need this video, but I will probably rewatch it before I maiden again. There is a lot to think about, & a nervous excitement when taking your new, never flown plane onto the field. Easy to miss a step in the process. For a newer pilot like me.
      I thought a flight buddy should higher on the recommendations. Of course the more experienced buddy, the better.
      Possibly, it is hardly worth a mention, because it happens so naturally at my club field. When a new plane arrives for its 1st flight, the pilot is accompanied by a friend or two during the preflight, & the field is cleared of all other aircraft.
      Mine was only different because I insisted my buddy was not to leave my side until the plane was comfortably trimmed. The elevator ran out of trim adjustment, it was manageable but not comfortable, so I appreciated, that he stayed for the entire flight.

    Another one you could add, if your coming from say a multi-rotor to a fixed wing for the very first time, spend some time on a simulator that you can use with your transmitter. Then hopefully you will get the majority of crashes out of the way before you make your maiden. When i first switched from multi-rotor to fixed wing i used a simulator first, and i am glad i did. My mind set immediately changed from "if i can fly a multi-rotor then fixed wing will be a piece of cake", to more like "darn, i am glad i flying on the simulator first!" I soon discovered it was all too easy to fly your model straight into the ground if you have never flown fixed wing before. An hour or two playing on the simulator first will save a lot of heartache when you do your maiden.

    Doing this hobby since the 70ies, maiden flights with fixed wings are still nerve-wracking each time. The worst of all is the first flight of a scratch-build plane of your own construction, which has to take off on its own power (or maybe a helicopter). I could need a sedative before powering up the motor(s) 🙃
    One thing I also do on the maiden is just checking the main functions and if the CG is right and then land after about one minute. Then I check all screws or whatever may come loose in flight, because when something is not propperly fixed, it will get loose very fast. I do that for the next couple of flights too.

    One mistake no matter what the craft is, if you do some work on a model forget you have done it then pick it up to go flying only to find you did not finish it or fully test. If I do some work on a craft including changing props on a Quad and you have not tested it I place a yellow tag on it with what was done, if anything needs doing and if it has completed a test flight remove tag. Red tag don't fly needs fixing No tag ok to fly with standard preflight checks. This is the same for a radio, if you have updated its worth tagging all models you fly with it to inform that the radio has been updated and fly with caution and complete all pre-checks before flight, if all ok remove tag for each model tested.

      @@beefybeef1326 kinda, the nose piece broke off, a part of the back cover and the motor mount.
      I repaired it (while i am writing this i am in the field just switching batteries for the next flight)
      But I STRONGLY RECCOMEND YOU THIS:
      Get yourself somen Tape like this:
      3M Tartan Filament-Klebeband Universal 8956, 50 mm x 50 m, Transparent (1-er Pack) www.amazon.de/dp/B01191KS0K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_6dbqEbDMXCC5J
      Then get 4mm and 3mm 1meter carbon rods (2-5$ each) and use the tape and the rods to reinforce the whole body, especially the front part (batter tray). When you see them crash, thats usually where they breake, probably saved mine from severe damage
      And use a lot of throttle at launch, that was the cause of my crash

    Maybe I missed this, but if you have telemetry you should have the coordinates displayed on the tx! I've used this twice, once with a battery disconnected and it brought me right to the crash site.

  • @jyunte
    @jyunte 4 роки тому

    My recommendation: If you see your aircraft go down, place your radio on the ground with the antenna pointing directly at the crash site. Now, pack up your gear. When everything is packed up, go back to the radio... It's still pointing at your aircraft. Now just walk where the radio's antenna was pointing, straight to your downed aircraft.

    • @jyunte
      @jyunte 4 роки тому +1

      KiwiFPV Make sure you REALLY are on the correct frequency - close channels can make it look like you've got a solid image in the goggles... Until you're a little way away, then you'll lose video completely. Make sure you unlocked the VTX so that you have full power available. Make sure you're not in pit mode. Finally, make sure your VTX antenna is good/properly attached to the transmitter/is the correct polarization, and check the antenna(s) on the goggles too.

      @@kiwifpv5865 Awesome! Glad you got it sorted out! Yeah, never trust autoscan. Instead, either look at the VTX and set your goggles to that channel; use smart audio to change the VTX channel; or use the band signal strength feature in the goggles to see with your *own eyes* which channel has the strongest signal. The autoscan feature just locks on to the first strong channel it finds, which might be an adjacent channel, but not the actual channel you're on. Now, "battery critical" warning?
