What's even more wild is how long the squid family has been on Earth. Some of the first apex predators in history were distant relations of what we think of as "giant squids".
i LOVE the scientists who narrate the NOAA ROV feed, they’re so fun, i recommend everyone watch the livestreams here on youtube it’s super interesting even tho there’s rarely as much action as an entire bigfin squid! shoutout to dr. “magna peena? oh man look at him” i like her commentary a lot
The Giant Squid is basically the crown jewel for all deep sea explorers when they keep on doing their research down there. Who knows what’s truly lurking down there in the depths?
agree, the deep sea is one of the least explored environments on Earth, and the Giant Squid represents the mysterious life forms that inhabit these depths.
Deep-sea life is so fascinating and terrifying. Whenever I feel like I'd like to go exploring, I remember playing Subnautica and think better of it. Your hair is really cute in this one Danielle! Thanks as always!
I remember watching a documentary years ago, maybe in the early 2000s about the giant squid. It looked so much like melted cheese with stringy arms and very little was known and the CGI at the time was fascinating. I hadn't heard about the colassal squid until 10 years ago and today I am learning of a 3rd relative? Amazing!
That's part of why they're so ravenous. They go from being aroun 5 inches long to that massive size in only a few years, so they have to eating constantly to fuel that growth.
First and foremost, I love this channel! Your videos are so much fun! They're edifying yet approachable and academic without being lecture-y or patronizing!! Keep being your epic selves I do have a fun idea that could become a series of sorts. It sometimes comes up in the behind the scenes parts or the video itself, but I'm curious about the "favorites" for the team(cast and crew) fave/least fave: animals, plants, geological history phases(?), videos to make, places to film/visit, preferences in animal/subject to film... maybe also maybe videos that involve and focus on the crew, what they do, how they got interested, what to do to do that job… That kind of thing
It should be pointed out that ambergris is, in the USA, illegal to possess or trade. So no career changing for any of us sadly. I believe Australia and India are the other countries that have laws against it too.
"The V-shaped stream of light across the beak is the last thing [the squid's prey] sees." Since the beasts are supposed to live a mile under water, there isn't much light. That's why sperm whales use echo-location to find them.
Fun fact, the Lusca is actually supposed to be a creature with the front half of a shark and the back half of a giant squid/octopus. Think “sharktopus”
You want to be afraid of a squid, never fall overboard in the Gulf of California near Baja, you'll be Humboldt Squid fodder. They're like 6+ ft. 10-armed pirahnas.
I remember that first video in 2004 in the dawn of the smartphone era. I thought it was the coolest footage I had seen in my life at the time. Maybe it's because I live in the Midwest and the closest I've been to a squid is the nearest Asian restaurant... It's sad really
Measuring squid with their tentacles is like measuring the lenght of a horse with its tail and tongue stretched out. Let's stay with 250kg, the size of a dolphin.
Colossal Squid might become endangered. The Chinese fishing fleet is stripping the Southern Ocean of their primary food source, the Patagonian Toothfish/ Chilean Sea Bass.
Once again you've come up with a fascinating subject. The EVNautilus channel has some interesting squid sightings, too. Did you know that Sperm Whales spout at an angle of about 45 degrees, not straight up? It's kind of hard to tell from drone photos, but the whales in the video seem to have not gotten this memo yet.🦑🐳
back in the day we had a whole trawler full of giant squids to move onto a shipping tramper . it was the most unwieldy otherworldly experience . talk about alien autopsy times 10k
What's even more wild is how long the squid family has been on Earth. Some of the first apex predators in history were distant relations of what we think of as "giant squids".
And those had hard mineralised shells.
We'll probably never know much about the soft shelled squid ancestry.

Ur moms the crown jewel

*ALL HAIL THE SQUID!!!*
Sci fi celebrates land squid. They hunt at night, why are you walking in the forest?
🦑
Teuthies❤
* ululates in agreement *
😮😮
The great calamari is the most ambitious human name for such a creature. lol
And apparently tastes like salted black liquorice. It would be quite something.
I freaking love your enthusiasm, keep up!
Deep-sea life is so fascinating and terrifying. Whenever I feel like I'd like to go exploring, I remember playing Subnautica and think better of it.
Your hair is really cute in this one Danielle! Thanks as always!
There’s finally going to be a Subnautica 2!
The Flying Spaghetti Momster appreciates you mentioning his Noodly Appendages multiple times. Ramen.
Genius comment
Best video I’ve ever watched.
I’m even not squiding.
Oooooooooh . . .
🤣
Please do mountain lions next.
My sons and I would love a video on Vultures, most specifically the Bearded Vulture! YAY!
Man like ten years watching you? Thanks for being a total sweetheart/champ.
I for one welcome our new, cephalopod overlords
Can't be worse than our current politicians
Much more intelligent and able than Justin Trudeau.

Same. What a time to be alive.
8:51 praised be His Noodly Appendages
Ramen
yasss i love the hair Danielle
Ehhh
Shorter generations with a huge size predator is crazy.
That's part of why they're so ravenous. They go from being aroun 5 inches long to that massive size in only a few years, so they have to eating constantly to fuel that growth.
Great content!! As always 😊
Love your art Danielle. Keep up the great work.
Your videos are always worth watching!!
“SQUEEED!”
is what my wife says when calamari is on the menu. She likes squid.
I like the new look
I wouldn't be surprised if they travel across dimensions.
great vid as always team 👍 love the necklace danielle
I love your glasses! You look great! Also, love squids! I have drawn a couple kraken pieces. :)
You should do an art show with all your drawings
So amazing that we've managed to see videos of these things alive in our lifetime.
Danielle looking like a snack as usual
Her jawline prolly stronger thank yours 💀
Unmatched animal drawing skills.
I for one welcome our new tentacled overlords, in a few hundred million years when they are the dominant life form and start space travel
The cockroachs will exploit them for their awful flesh.
Been watching this channel for years. Love you 🫶🏽
Fun Fact: The Kraken was originally interpreted as a Giant Crab before it shifted into the more now popular and well known Squid portrayal.
Asking once again for the epaulette shark, the cutest in the ocean.
Danielle, you are an icon and one of my biggest inspirations artistically. This colossal squid that you just drew is absolutely breathtaking!!! ❤❤💛💛
Great video, thank you!
7:11 The eye on that Squid looks terrifying

This is so cool and interesting and I'm excited for the future when we know more and you can make an update video about it!
you're such a beauty in this episode
"The V-shaped stream of light across the beak is the last thing [the squid's prey] sees." Since the beasts are supposed to live a mile under water, there isn't much light. That's why sperm whales use echo-location to find them.
🧽: Eeh Squidward?
🐙: “I’m not a squid you dolt!”
5:55 Which also makes them taste like salty licorice...which is pretty gnarly
The Dutch: 😏😋🍴
Awesome as always thanks ❤
Fun fact, the Lusca is actually supposed to be a creature with the front half of a shark and the back half of a giant squid/octopus. Think “sharktopus”
I thought that this was gonna be about squids. Instead, it was all about Gobby Gabby, the fish lady.
BUMMER.
Great video footage!
She makes the art?! Wow, what a woman
Animalogic is just one of the best shows 😎🖤💙🫡🇺🇸🇹🇹
You want to be afraid of a squid, never fall overboard in the Gulf of California near Baja, you'll be Humboldt Squid fodder. They're like 6+ ft. 10-armed pirahnas.
Danielle, you look sophisticated (and beautiful)
She is and fabulous artist
I always find it impressive that octopuses are among the most intelligent animals, but have such a short lifespan.
Guys, was it just me or did the background music choices in this video make everything really intense? LOL
The sketching is a nice touch
The thing that makes the ocean scary, them and Jellyfish.

Could we see something about the Monodontidae? I love whales and particularly the beluga and narwhal!
Measuring squid with their tentacles is like measuring the lenght of a horse with its tail and tongue stretched out.
Let's stay with 250kg, the size of a dolphin.
How long until we see a TikTok about “I just had giant squid steak at this crazy restaurant!”
Omg I can't believe I've found your channel again after four years !
Danielle is looking great these days!!! yaaassss bish💙💙🙌🙌🙌
Thank you DD!
I don't know why, but as a kid I thought squid had 6 legs. I think I might've seen a simplified image in a children's book.
From what I've heard, the Magnapinna that have been filmed were juveniles.
- I love *squid && octopus !* 🦑🐙 ♥️
Here's the thing... These cephalopods look badass AF but they are prey to Sperm Whales. So Sperm Whales are really badass.
Colossal Squid might become endangered. The Chinese fishing fleet is stripping the Southern Ocean of their primary food source, the Patagonian Toothfish/ Chilean Sea Bass.
Well that’s concerning
Squid always remind me of Splatoon I love them

Superintetesante. Felicitaciones!😊
Yay! New episode!
4:33 don't think I don't notice that pun now.
Excellent video
Seahorses!!❤️🐝🤗
YES!!!
Still hoping for a coffee table picture book of your awesome illustrations!
I love these guys
Mmmm. Love your art.
The Lord of the Squid
back in the day we had a whole trawler full of giant squids to move onto a shipping tramper . it was the most unwieldy otherworldly experience . talk about alien autopsy times 10k
make a video about prehistoric squids/cephalopods!
Love you Danielle! This time the music was a bit of a miss.
9:26 tell me you guys saw the black fins or tentacles of something behind it🫨
I wonder if you guys will make an episode on howler monkey's.
If squids and octopuses had thumbs, it would all be over for the humans.
After watching this video I had a sudden compulsion to unlock my Illithid potential
The map you used doesn’t have Puerto Rico, but shows islands smaller than it.
I would eat a giant squid.
With mayo.
On a bun.
Toasted.
With a little salt and pepper.
And people thought they were made up. xD It shows that we are not even close to covering ever square inch of this planet.
I like 'em. In a sandwich. They're crunchy. Nom, nom.
Sponges & Starfish next?
Emperor Penguins next :3
Lovely Squids! Please do the Ratal next🙏🙏"Honey Badger" international.
I have to ask. Where did you get your necklace?! I want one so bad!
Squids are unique sea creatures.
isopod next
Great calamari...so tasty sounding 😋
Bigfins are long but weigh very little. The dana octopus squid is the third largest after the colossal and giant squid.
I love that as camera became more accessible and powerful, giant squid sighting increase. And krakens are confirmed reals not just orcas penises
if i could never hear the phrase "bouquet of arms" again that'd be great
The Kraken is real. It's a giant squid. 🦑💙
