No, you are wrong. Oarfish are sensitive to tectonic plate activity that generate electromagnetic pulses and electric screech. Witnessing them washing up on shores literally signifies an impending disaster. Do you understand?
The wildfires in California are a direct result of the Pacific tectonic plate being pushed under the North American plate causing a phenomenon known as subduction. Subduction generates immense amounts of heat that ignites and burns anything within close proximity to the tectonic activity.
If I recall, they live deep in the ocean and it's likely that hydrothermal vents produce some sort of toxicity that kills them, which coincides with oceanic earthquakes that cause tsunamis.
Hey! that's a really cool theory and it might be true, but it hasn't been proven yet. While writing this episode we interviewed lots of marine biologists and they all told us the same thing: we still don't know for sure what kills or why they show up in clusters. It's a fascinating topic though!
The ironic part about this is that just the other day I saw someone post about how they caught an oarfish for the first time in animal Crossing 😅 I'm like....coincidence? Naaaaaah
Oarfish aren't related to sunfish; they're related to moonfish 😊 sunfish (Mola) are Tetraodontiformes, which are quite distant from moonfish (Lampris), which are also called sunfish or opah, and are Lampriformes!
(I've genuinely made this same mistake when writing about sunfish!). Also, moonfish are VERY cool (and beautiful!) in their own right, and seem to be able to increase their own body temperature 😁
for anyone unaware, the reason sonar is an issue is that even if humans are nearby the effects are....absolutely catastrophic and horrendous. i can only imagine how it is for fish especially one that can't control its depth. and the fact there's only a slowly increasing quantity of sonar systems definitely doesn't help.
Jeremy wade from the tv program river monsters did an episode on these fish. He actually swam with a live one where it comes up nearer to the surface following a chain that hold some sort of buoy down.
A little bummed that there wasn't more footage of healthy oarfish chilling in their natural environment, and instead mostly dead footage, but I'm guessing that's due to high cost of licensing.
We couldn't get clearance to include this footage in the episode. But check out Mark Benfield's amazing work in the Gulf of Mexico: ua-cam.com/video/8OElhdbaHMk/v-deo.html&ab_channel=AnimalWire
They do come near the surface at night even when they are healthy however they do not generally get close to breaking the surface save for near the end
@@BrunoCaruso-wz7pgI wouldn't be so sure. For all we know, the "Aquatic Ape Hypothesis" could have some legs to it. I'm waiting until we have more information on human evolution.
One day i catched an oarfish in animal crossing, i jokingly posted a picture and said "there's going to be an earthquake" and it did in fact happened, funny but i live in Chile so it's very common lol
I learned about these from Animal Crossing! But I never realized just how huge these things actually are 😯 It's kinda amazing how our AC character can just pull it out of the water like it's nothing 😆
"many oarfish have been showing up on a lot of beaches recently" "only show up to the surface to die" this can only mean one thing.. okay a lot of things but I was clearly pointing out that human pollution might be spreading onto the seabed now
If the fish were found up to 20 years before Japan had an earthquake, and now California is starting to see them. I’m not saying because of the fire because they’re not related to the fire, but could it just mean that either the San Andreas or the cascade is moving and it could go off tomorrow or in 20 years.
Oarfish are definitely up there on my list of favorite fishies/marine animals❤️ My list probably goes : 1.) Oarfish 2.) Manta Ray 3.) Mola Mola 4.) Pufferfish 5.) moray eels 6.) Swordfish 7.) chinook Salmon 8.) Catfish 9.) Seahorses 10.) basking shark *Honorable mentions: Anglerfish Fish, Giant grouper, Coelacanth
The fact that this is the second comment like this I've seen today is either concerning, or you commented on 2 videos that we both were waiting to watch.
I have always wondered (and do believe) if ore fish spawned the myths and tales of sea serpents. I mean, look at them. They look insanely similar to old drawings of sea serpents, especially the ones they used to mark on maps.
Suggestion. A episode on critters the rely on dark oxygen. This topic needs more awareness as seabed mining has a potential of cascading extinction events.
Their reported coloring is very interesting to me; deep dwelling vertical feeders that have bright reds and oranges in crowns and dorsal? Is it acidic geothermal adaptations? I am definitely not an expert, I just want to learn more ❤
No mention of how the guy from Deadliest Catch was the first person to get a clear recording of a living oarfish? They swim vertically up close to the surface at night, following the daily mass migration of plankton up and down the water column.

To be fair, seeing any deep sea exclusive swimming fish washed up onto shore is a sure sign something isn't right

What about tim cook? I need a new phone
I still haven’t been able to catch one, I’ve given up😂😅😢
These things are so freaky. Definitely explains a lot of sea serpent mythology!
Narration: "They're prophets from the gods, telling beach goers a simple message..."
Oarfish: "PUT ME BACK IN THE WATER, I CAN'T BREATHE UP HERE."
This would be a great animated short! 💙
They are usually already dead when they come up
@@tortiz98 I'm aware they're usually found dead, and the vid says so. Just the first joke that entered my mind on that part of the intro, lol.

I thought it was two oarfish, not just one oarfish.
@mitchellskene8176 you're correct, it was two
Only Jeremy wade could swim with not just one extremely rare fish but two at once
@@highestqualitypigiron It certainly was a rare encounter. Personally, I'm glad that he captured it on film!!

Imagine hearing tales of a giant sea serpent and it turns out to be this fish the whole time? The illusion is definitely ruined.
@@mypal1990 To be fair, oarfish are quite spooky looking!! I think I’d be relieved 😅
the same way mermaid legends basically are just sightings of sealions and manatees

Why does the animation show 5 polar bears on the scale when it clearly says one polar bear (~300kg)?

7:02 Or, alternatively, drag fishing destroys their habitat?
Drag fishing kills oarfish. Line fishing entangles EVERYTHING. Net fishing kills dolphins. We just can't win.

You are already defeated.
Seems very timely since they just had a massive earthquake and a corresponding tsunami warning.

The first time I saw this fish was in Dredge. I didn't think it was an actual fish 😅
So strange this appeared a few months before the current fires.
There was a 7.0 earthquake off the shore of California in early December.
The Mayan calendar was also bad news, remember? We're still here.

Oarfish are night feeders. They rise from the depths to the surface to eat plankton and then they go back down to the depths.
My dream as a marine bio student is to see one in person that's not been preserved
I always thought that the Magnapinna Squid was the Slenderman of the sea.
