The first generation Fusion are really reliable cars I own 2 of them, much better than the last model of Fusion. I own one of those as well. The 2009 I have right now has 173k I bought it from my father the original owner with 90K on it. I have replaced maintenance items and the fuel pump, but the fuel pump was prevenative maintenance, stil has the original starter and alternator. I just bought a 2007 Ford Fusion V6 for 2K, it needed an alternator, the previous owner had replaced a lot of maintenance items. Both cars run great the 2009 had the 2.3 and the 2007 has the 3.0 V6, obviously the 2007 is more fun to drive. I think you are wrong on the specs though both have engines I believe were a dual project with Mazda and Ford, but the 4 cylinders have a 5 speed Mazda transmission and the 3.0 V6 has a ford transmission. I live in AZ so both cars are mostly rust free, but are great drivers. I conquer on what you are saying with them being cheap reliable American cars, most Fords 2011 or older are much more reliable than the modern cars Ford builds. I likely won't buy another new Ford only older ones unless they get their quality together. I boought the 2009 for $4500 back in 2015 and it still is running strong, I think its going to be hard to beat that as a monthly car expense with other vehicles, AC works on both cars as well!
If you want the reliable SUV, any Wrangler or Cherokee with 4 liter straight 6, I think from the 90s to early 2000s, they will run 300 to 400k miles, easy to maintain.
