"A Coral Room" is actually one of Kate Bush's most personal (in the way it deals with her personal life) and powerful in terms of lyrics. Yes, she said it was about the passing of time but underneath she really wanted to express what she felt about the death of her mother which (according to her words) made her feel "devastated" as family was always very important for her and she had a very close relationship with her mother (who, by the way, appears in her video for "Suspended in Gaffa"). Important fact: that song (like "Wuthering Heights") was recorded in one take in order to capture her emotion and it's absolutely palpable. "A Coral Room" is definitely one of my favourite songs by KB as it displays perfectly the genius of her songwriting, just like "Mrs Bartolozzi" on the same album and "Lake Tahoe" on "50 words for snow" which I definitely recommend as you liked that one.

According to bassist Del Palmer (Kate's sound engineer and former partner), one night when her home studio was empty he set up microphones to record and placed candles all around Kate's grand piano and turned out the lights. Kate came in, sat down, began playing and recorded this in one single take (guest vocals were added in later). Extremely emotional song for Kate, as it's underlying theme is about the death of her mother. One of Kate's most beautiful songs.

    The opening line is perfect.
    In every way.
    What a voice she has.
    What a beautiful song.

She is still able to hit the high notes on Ariel.
What a gift she has with her voice and writing talents.
She is absolutely brilliant and we are very lucky to have her here in England.
I wonder what she’s working on at the moment.
Hopefully she will spring a surprise on us soon.
    Fingers crossed 🤞

Another nice one of Kate’s to try is ‘The Fog’ from The Sensual World album.

Kate; "The song is really about the passing of time. I like the idea of coming from this big expansive, outside world of sea and cities into this very small space. It's talking about a memory of my mother and this little brown jug"

I'm so glad you are warming a little to some of Kate's work. I think some of her more recent recordings would be a better listen for you as her voice has matured and softened. That's why I think "Nocturn" is a good choice for a future listening reaction.

Kate is a story teller who doesn't have to tell you the story to break your heart. She tells of the warmth in objects all around a place and then tells you why those objects gained warmth because of a relationship to someone who is no longer there.

A good song from a great artist, thank you for doing a reaction to it. It's nice to hear a later song from Kate, it's about the aftermath of War, The Second World War, I believe, and remembering a woman.

    • @cuckoofan
      @cuckoofan 2 роки тому +8

Actually, the war thing and the submerged city are just metaphors to explain how an event (in this case the death of her mother) can destroy and engulf everything except remembrance. Allthough things apparently disapear, they're still here, deeply buried somewhere... Actually, the song is about grief.

@@cuckoofan Right, I wasn't aware about her Mother's passing, now that I know this it makes sense, thank you.

@@Adam_Le-Roi_Davis. No wonder you weren't aware of it as Kate Bush is a very private artist and she doesn't like to deal publicly with her own life. At the time, she seemed reluctant to talk about that in the press. That's why many of her songs use metaphoric elements and symbols to express very intimate subjects, especially in "The Red Shoes" and "Aerial". That spider is the link she chose to use to make you travel from that made-up story of this submerged city into the realities of a very private event, and the brown jug is the element she used to symbolize her mother. "Little brown jug" is an actual traditional song her mum apparently used to sing and KB said this milk jug definitely existed. Kate Bush has always been an incredible storyteller because she read a lot as a child, heard many traditional anglo-irish songs in her family and always enjoyed watching many movies, that's why it"s so present in her songwriting. Glad I helped...

@@cuckoofan Yes, I know the song, 'Little Brown Jug', and I know that Kate is a private person, as I'm 62 from the UK, I've grown up with Kate Bush, but I didn't know about her Mother's death and I haven't heard her album Aerial', I have the album 'The Red Shoes' though. Thank you for your comment and explanation, it's appreciated, and the reactors may well not know so, it's great that you've given all information to help us fully understand.

@@Adam_Le-Roi_Davis. Actually, Kate Bush's mother became ill and died during the process of "The Red Shoes". This album was originally intended to be joyous, fairly simple and KB had planned to tour with this new album for the second time, but many things began to go wrong during the recording of "The Red Shoes" (her mother's illness, people dying around her, especially her guitarist Alan Murphy, her sentimental relationship with long-time partner and bassist Del Palmer ending) which became a rather desperate and dark album. "Moments of Pleasure" and "You're the One" and in some ways some other songs are all about that. All this explains why Kate Bush disapeared during 12 years as she needed to recover from all those tragic experiences. It took time... But during this time, she started a new affair with her new guitarist Danny Mc Intosh and then had her son Albert ("Bertie") so "Aerial" reflects all those positive new energies. Maybe you should listen to it, it's a very luminous, peaceful and beautiful double-album in which you can hear "A Coral Room" (on disc 1 called "A Sea of Honey"), a subject matter she couldn't deal with while making "The Red Shoes". All the songs of the second disc ("A Sky of Honey") describe very beautifully the simplicicity and the serenity of her new life, just appreciating it for what it is during a whole day through the solar cycle and bird songs which really reminds some of the themes present in Virginia Woolf's work. Thanks for your attention. Cheers Adam!

A beautiful song from Kate. It is another case of, " Less is more ". I think many newer artists could learn a lot from her. Another favourite song of mine, from this album, is, " Mrs Bartolozzi ". Who else could make the task of putting dirty clothes in the washing machine, sound so beautiful ?
I would also like to ask you not to forget about Laura Marling. I am aware that she is not likely to attract so many views as some of the other acts you have featured on your channel, but I am sure you would love many of the songs from her most recent album, " Song For Our Daughter ". Songs such as, Fortune, Blow By Blow and The End Of The Affair, have the same emotional impact as some of Kate's compositions.

That and The Red Shoes are the ones that i don't have, or know that well.
Time to correct that i think.

Yes this is from the doubledisc album Aerial. Featured as the closing track of disc 1 called A Sea Of Honey. The other disc, A Sky Of Honey is a conceptalbum of 9 tracks that is just as extraordinary as The Ninth Wave (part two of the Hounds Of Love album).

Kate Bush loves cats! She's also a great story teller, who wasn't afraid of dark topics and has a voice that's easy on the ears!
She had many fights with record labels for not caring about popularity and fame but they soon gave up trying!
