  • Chopin’s friendship with the virtuoso cellist Auguste Franchomme led him to compose his Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 65, premiered in 1847, which became immensely popular. The opening movement, a large-scale “Allegro moderato”, seems to evoke the Lied “Gute Nacht”, found at the beginning of Schubert’s song cycle Winterreise.
