Michael Jackson
Phil Collins
Frank Sinatra
Buddy Holly
Nat King Cole
Freddie Mercury
Paul McCartney
Johnny Cash
Prince
Rod Stewart
Elton John
Andy Williams
Art Garfunkel
Stevie Wonder
Bing Crosby
Marvin Gaye
Sam Cooke
Otis Redding
Elvis Presley....and many many many more legends
I’m mark, from the north of England. I make all of my own templates and do all of my own research and edit all of my own content with keynote, and occasionally iMovie.
Criteria for being included is just elevating their career before the end of the 70s. If they sang and was active then they can be considered, but if they sang in the pub in December 1979 then they won't be. I'm sure you understand
Music from the audio library: Nat Keefe & BeatMower - Late Night Drive
Made with Keynote on MacBook Pro
It's taken almost a month of hard work so please watch through once you are here. who's your favourite classic singer?
I’m only up to Tony Bennet at 3:35 so far but I’m going to say Prince. Loved the song when Doves Cry ( do not even know the name ). 😆. I’m sure I’ll change throughout of course.
Tom Jones….you don’t have to be beautiful to turn me on 🕺
BOB MARLEY MAARN...lol
Nice long video ...I miss Marc Bolan ..I have all the T rex music on cassette obviously..
The Chairman Frank Sinatra and Elvis
WOW, they were all LARGER THAN LIFE! So many famous stars under 5' 6"
Yes there are a few
True that!
It’s always disappointing when you see a “star” in real life and they are small.
@@krissmith9361 I bet
Same with many of the great classical composers.
Beethoven, Chopin, Stravinski, Bernstein....all under 5'5"!
In my mind, I always imagined Art Garfunkel at over 6 feet. Still at 5'9" he towered over Paul Simon.
I get so many comments of this nature
Me too. I've always put Simon around 5'6", so I assumed Garfunkel to be 6'1".
Ssme with Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers.
Paul Simon is borderline little person.
Yeah, Art Garfunkel is just normal height. Paul Simon is just really short.
Vocally, many favorites here. But since this video featured their height, please include Tony Hadley (of Spandau Ballet), who is 6'4" if you do an update in the future. Thanks! Nice range of artists & performers! Appreciate your hard work. Great job! Was also surprised by Freddie Mercury's height. I had always thought of him as 6 feet tall. Sometimes seeing them on stage gives the illusion of added height, along with a strong, confident performance.
Wow how tall would that have made Brian may lol! Hadley is in part 1 of my male singer series. It’s my most viewed video
I have to admit that quite a few of these heights surprised me! Some I was "sure" were short (like Barry Manilow...6 feet? Really? I always thought he was tiny!) And some I was shocked at how short they were! Cool video!
Yes it’s true! Thank you 🙏
No no no. Manilow is famously tall and lanky. He's thin and long. His caricature that he uses of him sitting at the piano exaggerates him as tall and lanky with long legs that won't fit under the piano. Manilow, on the Tonight Show playing musical director for Bette Midler when he was a nobody, he plays the piano from a semi-standing position where is uses basically a bar stool and just leans on it and he looks iconically tall. You are associating "aggressive and brutish" with tall. Because Manilow is refined and a nice guy you are surprised to find out he's tall, and because Billy Joel is straightforward and coarse you are surprised he's short. Gentlemen can be tall too.
@@TheLarryBrown has nothing to do with what I was thinking, but that's interesting.
@@dianevanderlinden3480 Remind me who you are again? You have no comments in this thread.
In the Rock and Roll wax museum in London there's an impression of Paul Simon's hand in the wall. It was so tiny, almost child-sized. Pretty interesting that he became such a talented guitarist despite the size. Bono would be standing next to him if he'd been included in the list.
Bono is in part 1, only released one single around the turn of 1980 and that was only in Ireland so was ineligible due to the criteria I set
I can't imagine the amount of time it must have taken for you to so accurately measure all of them. It's amazing!
These heights are estimated peak heights, so measuring them wouldn’t make any difference. None of these people would be their peak height today sarky 😉
I love the irony. I'll bet "Datawatch" doesn't get it.
@@davidfusani why wouldn’t I?
Especially when he had to dig up the dead ones. Eeeewwww!!!!

Somehow, I thought Steve Perry was taller. He looked so tall & thin I guess I assumed he was about 6’. And it was interesting to not that as the Gibb brothers got younger they got shorter.
@@ShelleB yea 🤔
Surprised that Jagger is taller than Bowie - Jagger looked like a tiny thing next to Bowie in that video they did together- cover of "Dancin' in the streets "
There’s nothing in it
I once saw one of Jagger’s costumes at the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame Museum. It looked tiny to me.
@@Nicksonian he was pretty slim. And those outfits fairly tight 🤣
He only weighs like 130-135
@DataWatch Mick is no more than 5'6'' and that is pushing it. He routinely wears lifts.
Wow! I didn't know that the many of those guys were under 5'6" !? I'm 5'4" but a drummer and singer 2nd and never felt short or had a complex about it? I have a big personality and didn't think about it unless I saw pictures with friends 6' and over, I always said " you guys are tall" never thought I was short?🤔 LOL KEEP ROCKING! Thank you so much 😊
You are in denial, but whatever works for you!
Thank you for compiling this video, it's brilliant. 💋👌
Thank you so much! 😊😊
What they lacked in height they sure as hell made up for in talent. Could have swore Tom Petty was 5'5. God bless 'em all. They have given us so much musical enjoyment no matter what their height.
5’5? Not sure about that. But thank you 🙏
I work at LAX. Years ago Ozzie Osbourne was going through TSA right in front of me wearing sneakers. I'm only 5'7" and I had to slightly bend forward to look him in the eye. I spoke to him. He's not 5'9"! My older brother is 5'10" & I've had to look up every day to speak to him.
Well ozzy won’t have been his peak height for a very very long time. When you say years ago, it would need to be over 40 years ago as you shrink after 40
@@DataWatch. Indeed!...Belng 75 now, I have lost a full inch in height over the last 40 years or so...the spine does deteriorate, due to gravity...My doctor says if I live to be in my 80s, I will lose at least another inch!

Calling Ringo Starr a singer is a stretch but Joe Perry barely sang backup.
I can’t win. I left him out of my original male singer video and got crucified. Now he’s in, why is he there? 🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻
@@DataWatch. Ringo certainly sang with the Beatles plus had a string of hit singles on his own.

You are fairly tall then 😊
I've worked with some of these people and I can tell you that the published heights are the work of publicists giving an inch or two. Nevertheless cool video, and cool backing track/groove
Thanks. I’ve tried to take the first part of that comment into account. Many of these claim to be taller than I’ve listed them
Enjoyed that. Thanks

After watching this video, at 5'8. I don't feel so bad about myself.

This was fascinating and I can see how much work it took! Can Neil Diamond actually be 6 feet? I loved the diversity of the artists! VERY well done!!
Yea I think it’s possible. Thank you 🙏
Some who I thought were small are tall and vice versa. Thanks for this.
No thank you
I met Jon Anderson and he gave me a hug. I think he liked me because I made him feel tall. (I'm 4' 11")
Haha 😆
I kissed Davy Jones and can attest that he is 5'3", and caught a cold from Peter Cetera who stands 5'11 or 6'. I stand 6'1" and it was funny/sad seeing how many of these singers are vertically challenged. P.s. You forgot Rick Astley.
I didn’t even look at him. I didn’t think he was active before 1980🤔
What a cool video! Very impressive😊
Thank you so much 😊
Great video, one mistake I did notice was you spelt Lionel Richies name with a T; it doesn’t have a T. Other than that well done.
Good spot
Interesting to see how tall The Beatles were considering they were born during the war and would have grown up under rationing until the 50s.
Yea interesting thought
But they were certainly not "tall" by today's standards...very average, at best.
I'm sure Freddie Mercury was 5'10 but I could be wrong. It doesn't really matter. He's 100% sexiness and pure talent combined! Very interesting and surprising video. Good job!
I won’t argue over that but I genuinely think if anything he was shorter. Thank you 🙏
Freddie was more like 5'7. Which is still a good 3 inches taller than Bono who is shockingly tiny when you meet him. Can't be more than 5'4... on a good day!
@@singing894 think you are being a little conservative. I do think Bono is probably only about 5’5 or smidge over though
What?? No way was Freddie any less than 5'9 but he was taller even than that! The other Queen members are pretty tall especially Brian. They were all taller than Freddie, but Freddie was no short arse lol.
You must be a giant to think everyone's so tiny!
Some of these guys used lifts in their shoes, some worre heels, but it didn't matter, they were always the PERFECT height!
Much of this is taken into account in research! These guys can’t always wear those stage lifts, think this is pretty accurate
A great job but I think you overlooked the great Gordon Lightfoot (6'), J.R."Robbie" Robertson, Kris Kristofferson (5' 10"), and was EVH in there?
Ok sorry. No but he’s on the guitarist’s video
Nice surprise seeing Alan "blind owl" Wilson here. I had no Brian Wilson was that tall! Also, me and Peter Cetera share the same height, noice.
It was no bother putting him in. Found him in research after a suggestion by someone
You forgot David Cassidy RIP. I think he was 5'7". He was small.
I thought I put him in sorry
I was feeling a little cocky about my size (5'7"), until I got to Eric Burdon (also 5'7") !!!
Although he's not a singer, guitarist Randy Rhoads was also 5'7" !!!
Bob Hite of Canned Heat....Much Loved, R.I.P.
Joey Ramone was ALL legs. If his body was proportionate, his feet would be where his knees are !!!
I dunno him but I am at some point going to do a greatest guitarists height vid
I wonder how many people noticed the two opera singers you slipped in there.
Err….🤣
The ones I thought were/are short turn out to be tall and the ones I thought were/are tall turn out to be short! 🤷🏽♂️
I get this comment a lot and still find it a little confusing. But maybe they use trickery in the shorter guys so they don’t look so small 🤔

I have a couple interesting takeaways from this:
Michael Hutchence, who is my favorite singer, is often compared to Jim Morrison and Mick Jagger. And he happens to be the same height as both of them, 5'10."
Second, I knew Marc Bolan was on the shorter side, but he made it work for him. If he were over 6', he would look ridiculous as an androgynous glam rocker. I happen to think he's quite adorable.😉
Third, I was surprised that SRV, Billy Ocean and Bob Marley are that short. I'm also surprised that Little Richard, Barry Manilow and Stevie Wonder are as tall as they are. I agree w/those who said it might be because they sit at a piano.
Fourth, it's amazing to me the reactions to Robert Plant's height. Most say he's taller and one said he doesn't give off tall man's energy. Well, I think he does. And I heard Jimmy Page thought he was the bouncer when came to hear him sing because he was so tall. My mom, who isn't the biggest Zeppelin fan, always refers to him as the tall blond one. My cable provider has a classic rock channel that plays Led Zeppelin and shows various photos. My favorite is one where Bonham is sitting, Indian style, JPJ is squatting next to him, Jimmy is leaning over them and Robert, wearing dark pants, a shirt that actually fits for once, a necklace and his curly blond hair, is standing next to Jimmy w/his hands behind his back. I dare anyone to tell me, who looks at that photo, that he doesn't look over 6'. If I had grown-up in the 70s instead of the 80s, Robert Plant would be my favorite singer instead of Michael Hutchence. But he's my second so that's the way goes. Timing is everything🤣🤣
Well said! I think many people have seen plant in later life and just assumed because he’s shrunk a bit (which I think he definitely has) that he was never over 6’. We know the truth 😉
If you're going to include Ringo as a singer, you really should include Roger Taylor, who sang lead on several Queen songs, backing vocals on all of them, and famously hit the high note in "Bohemian Rhapsody." He also has 5 solo albums.
Suppose I could have done. You are the first person to ever suggest him though. I’ve had hundreds of suggestions for ringo after leaving him out of previous videos
@@DataWatch. Fair enough. The Beatles did consider themselves to be four equal members, while Queen definitely had Freddie as their frontman, despite all of them singing, and both Brian and Roger occasionally taking lead vocals.

@@adriandevine5955 ok. I’ve just had a comment saying others were singing but he sang on 3 tracks. I dunno the facts and I won’t be looking into it, don’t have time. Judging by the comments I got he must have sung something. But I dunno and it’s too late to change. I’ll continue to get slaughtered for leaving him out, and continue to get slaughtered for putting him in 🤷♂️🤦🏻
@@DataWatch. Mick FLeetwood is a terrific musician so I don't care if he technically hasn't sung, he belongs on this list. Thanks for the interesting.montage. Makes you realize that 5' 10" is about the average. ( My brother who always says he's short, will be happy! 😉 )
@@8ofwands300 yea I’d say 5’9 to 5’10. Thanks
Thank you so much for sharing. This was very interesting and I was surprised by many of them. My favorite singer. Paul McCartney.
Nice. Got to love Sir Paul
Paul is an excellent height.
My favourite is George Harrison. Each of The Beatles is under 6'11", but I already knew that. Great video!!!!
@@jacquismith3277 thank you 🙏🏼
Always thought all three Beatles J,P,G, were all 5ft 11ins....
I started watching. Said I am too busy for this! Kept watching….Tom Jones is shorter than I thought. Turning off now. Whoa Buddy Holly was 5’11”. No more. Elvis Presley was a Tall boy. Julio Iglesias. 6’ of sexy. Meatloaf ! Big boy. No more….Neal Diamond was 6’. HUH. Not King Cole the giant of a singer. I can’t look away! The kids can wait,I have to finish this. Gene Simmons is 8’ tall, this must be wrong! Oh Barry White, my first baby boy. This was so interesting. Thank you for all that hard work. But curse you for keeping me from my work.. (not really). Well done.
Haha thank you. Make sure those kids are sorted ☺️
You can see you put a lot of work into this. Well done! Thank you.
Thank you so much
STEVE PERRY..no comparison when it comes to “the voice,” but I’m 5’4” which makes me PERFECT for Steve!!!
Popular guy definitely
Another Steve lover! Yes girl, no comparison!
You know they have to be tiny so they can fit on our TV screens, don't you?
I never thought of it that way 🤣
Good one! 🤣
I was getting a little nervous 13 minutes in until they hit 6 feet 🤣 glad to see some tall guys at the end 6 - 7"
Yes Dave! Plenty of shorties in the list though
Back in the 80s KISS had the reputation of being the tallest band (even without the platform boots) and members of AC/DC were known to be very short. As a teenager I once was face to face with Lemmy of Motorhead, one of my heroes, and I was shocked to see that I was taller than him. In my mind he should have been a giant.
I’ve had many people claiming he was taller than I listed him
@@DataWatch. I'm 5'11 and he looked about 1 inch shorter than me from what I remember so it correlates with the 5'10 in your chart
@@alephalpha no substitute for seeing them in the flesh I guess
Ace and Gene were the only members from the original makeup era that were actually over 6 foot without the heels. Ironically Bruce Kulick (who never wore platform boots or makeup) was the tallest member ever to be in KISS at 6 foot 3”
@@twinvasion7798 right
Wow, camera shots sure makes these artists look so much taller than they really are! 😳
Yea I agree
When I saw Davy at the beginning I was like YEAH DAVY WE SHORT PEOPLE I LOVE YOU. AND RITCHIE VALENS THE BEATLES TOOOO❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏
Thank you 🙏
I knew a fellow who was a lighting designer who, among his other tasks, prepared the spotlights for the performers. He was disbelieving when he asked David Bowie's advance man for his real height for the purpose of setting the lights: 5'5"! He was as shocked as I was to hear it, but the show must go on and all that and DB was 5'5".
I don’t see that personally. He pretty much matched jagger for height
@@DataWatch. I hear you, but I suspect Jagger is also a shrimp. Another unverifiable anecdote: many years ago my girlfriend at the time was living on W 74th in NYC as was Jagger. She often saw him on the street and used to say ‘ he’s my size’ … she was 5’2 1/2”. I suspect she was exaggerating but still…
@@neojohn44 hmmm…,

So how tall was “famously tall” Jerry hall. Who’s shorter than jagger here. And please don’t mention lifts, everyone wears them. Hall wears heels lol
@@DataWatch.
Publicity photos are staged. Keith is 5'9" and Mick about the same. I'm 6'2" and passed by Mick Fleetwood at his restaurant in DC. He's tall, but seemed about 6'4", but tall people tend to slouch so sometimes it's hard to say.
@@fazole he may have lost height! He’s not a spring chicken
I absolutely love this, and thank you for mentioning my distant cousin Marc Bolan, only 2 inches taller than me.
I have to ask though, are you absolutely certain about David Bowie's height? I once stood 6 ft from him and I'm 5'3, and he was a tiny man. I find it difficult to believe he was just under 5 ft 10 inches.
It’s just what the data says. I don’t think he looks short in pictures 🤷♂️
I think it depends on the sources. Like someone's age, someone's height and maybe weight are sometimes reported incorrectly. Vanity might be in play. Maybe someone doesn't like the person they're managing or promoting,etc.. I've read a few books about Bowie and at least one put him around five ten. Then again, you saw him. Stick to your guns.
@@DataWatch. that's why I was so utterly surprised when I stood 6 ft away from him, the reason he looked tall was because he was very thin.
@@kathryntitus9647 Yes!...being thin definitely contributes to having a taller countenance...I was amazed to find out that the members of AC/DC were so short!...like 5-3" on up to Bon Scott, who seemed taller by comparison--but he was only 5'8".
The Man on the Silver Mountain, Ronnie James Dio, caused earthquakes with his voice. Sorely missed. RIP Ronnie James🤘
I don’t listen to enough old music if I’m honest
I saw ELF supporting Deep Purple in Glasgow in 1974, ELF being Ronnie James Dio in his first incarnation.
WoW!!! I'm impressed..the amount of time and research you put into this. Tks for sharing. Cheers!!
Thank you so much
I'm tall for a woman...5'10"...and I cannot believe how short some of these guys are! They look so much taller on TV! LOL!
Yes you aren’t the only one to say
Thanks for the 70s jeans pants 😂😂😂
It may have been mentioned before, but Tony Hadley of Spandau Ballet is 6'4". We saw a performance by Kip Winger and met him afterwards. My wife is 5'6" and she was easily 2 to 3 inches taller than him, so I'm guessing he's about 5'3". He put on a really good show too!
I guessed spandau started in 1980 although I could have been wrong. Obviously I used names that were active before the 80s. He is in part 1 of this male singer collection, about 6’4 thereabouts yes
I’m a 6’3/4” guitar player, I would tower over some of these singers. I had no idea how many of the legends were under 5’5” tall! One of the tricks they used in MTV videos was to put the short singers a couple of feet closer to the camera to even up the visual perception of the band heights, Steve Perry was always in front of the rest of Journey in photos and videos like that.
You will like my next video very much! I guarantee it
This is mostly made up...
Nice try
@@chancesareshewears what’s made up? Have you any idea how difficult this is to put together? This is one of the silliest comments I’ve ever had 🤦🏻
Yawn
I honestly always knew Steve Perry would end up being shorter, I actually expected to see him earlier in the list!
Lots of surprises on the list. Joey Ramone 6'6 1/2"? That's shocking. So many 5'7" and under. Very interesting and well put together video.
Thank you! I did my best
I didn't realize Tom Jones was so relatively short. Always thought he was 6 ft.
Lol not quite
Fantastic piece of research work, and presented in a simple and interesting manner. Cheers.
I thought so. Thank you for the compliment
Took me forever to get to anyone my height of 5’11. As a woman, it was a hassle. But having met more than 1 of these guys back in the day, I think there’s fudging it a bit with lifts!
Possibly. They are barefoot estimates and I get more people claiming these guys are taller than I do claiming shorter
@@DataWatch. the only person who I thought was maybe smaller, was elvis costello
@@DataWatch. I am a Hendrix fanatic, and can tell you that he was measured at autopsy as being 5'11"...but when he entered the Army at age 18 and a half, he was measured at 5'10"...that was likely his true height.
@@curbozerboomer1773 interesting
Such an eclectic & broad range of singers with a few surprises, at least for me. Funny how some people appear to be so much shorter or taller than they actually are.

Joey Ramone ! What an unique voice !
Yes 😃
Holy crap, Jagger's at least 5 inches taller than I would've imagined.
A few have said this
He and Richards have always been listed at 5’10 or 5’11. Watch the video of the Stones with Angus and Malcolm Young of AC/DC as guests. They tower over the Young who is like 5’2.
@@flyingburritobro68 Yeah, I don't doubt it. For some reason, certain people just give the impression of being taller or shorter than they really are. For the longest time, I thought Hugh Jackman was really short, but dude is 6'3"!
It's due to Jagger's posture. He has a deep arched back. Richards has a much straighter posture.
The Bee Gees just prove that pants can lengthen your legs and make you look taller. How tight those pants are can determine now high you can sing too. I thought Maurice Gibb was at least 6'2''. Barry Manilow looks like a 5'6'' type of guy.
