@@DataWatch. Marriott was one of the most talented vocalist England produced in that era . I counted all of the singers in the lineup that I have seen or can remember seeing. I got to 32 from Prince, George Benson, Muddy Walters right through Ray Davies, Mick Jagger, Johnny Cash, Roger Waters, then John Lydon, Paul Weller, Sting, Lemmy, Bryan Ferry, Terry Hall and loads of others. I enjoyed this. I thought I've seen quite a lot of music in my years but this video makes me realise I really haven't and you've not even got to the 90s, 00s, teens and the current decade. Thanks for putting in the time and effort to make a great video 👍👍👍👍🍻
I have to admit that quite a few of these heights surprised me! Some I was "sure" were short (like Barry Manilow...6 feet? Really? I always thought he was tiny!) And some I was shocked at how short they were! Cool video!
No no no. Manilow is famously tall and lanky. He's thin and long. His caricature that he uses of him sitting at the piano exaggerates him as tall and lanky with long legs that won't fit under the piano. Manilow, on the Tonight Show playing musical director for Bette Midler when he was a nobody, he plays the piano from a semi-standing position where is uses basically a bar stool and just leans on it and he looks iconically tall. You are associating "aggressive and brutish" with tall. Because Manilow is refined and a nice guy you are surprised to find out he's tall, and because Billy Joel is straightforward and coarse you are surprised he's short. Gentlemen can be tall too.
Good job on this video! I really enjoyed it. If you ever do another, Peter Steel from Type O Negative would be an awesome addition. I think he was around 6’7”!
@@DataWatch. I've commented elsewhere, but 'solo' doesn't always mean signing. On his solo/side project stuff, he's drumming and other people are singing. The complainers have misled you!

I knew he was 5'5 but when you see his thumb, on the guitar, it is always coming over the top which is so weird to me. His hands must have been very big. A guy at 5 ft.5 in. should not have been able to bring his thumb over the top of the guitar. Next time you watch a video of him check it out. It is very surprising!
@@scarletc.7055 His hands were larger than average...but the most startling example of large hands had to be Hendrix!...his hands looked both large, and extra length was evident in his fingers. He could, and did, use his long thumb to reach certain chords most people could not reach...Jimi was born to play amazing guitar!
I met Aerosmith at a meet and greet before a concert. Even with cuban heels they were seriously short. The publicity people made sure tall guys kneeled down in front of the band for photo's.
You've done an outstanding job here. Very impressive. I was very surprised by Roger Daltrey coming in at 5'6. He seemed so much smaller seeing him on stage back in the '70's. I guess it was Townshend and Entwistle being much taller that gave the impression. It's hard to pick favorites from so many great vocalists, but two of mine are Robert Plant and Rick Davies. Thank you for taking the time to make this interesting vid.
Something to know--Tallness is usually the result of having a longer thigh bone...when folks are sitting around a table, judging height is more difficult.

In the Rock and Roll wax museum in London there's an impression of Paul Simon's hand in the wall. It was so tiny, almost child-sized. Pretty interesting that he became such a talented guitarist despite the size. Bono would be standing next to him if he'd been included in the list.
I think that people whose growth years were the 1930s-1940s ate much less protein...much less, period. Evidence of this is the height of Japanese increasing with more protein in their diet. Additionally, Great Britain was under rationing well into the 1950s. The other thing I'd point out is that many of the singers shown here that are below average height are Jewish, and Jewish people as a whole tend to be shorter. Really terrific video!! Appreciate all the hard work you did to bring us this compilation. It's very good. 😊
A lot of thought went into rationing, (at least in the U.K.) Rations were meant to be as nutritious as they could be in the circumstances. The generation that grew up in the forties and fifties was actually healthier in many respects compared to us. It is certainly true that obesity rates were much lower. And due to the lack of labour saving devices people lead less sedentary lifestyles. Not sure about the amount of protein people back then were consuming. I think that environmental factors play a part in things like height, but I think genetics plays a strong part in determining height too.
Many of these surprised me. Stevie Ray Vaughn and Fats Domino were tiny. I thought Bill Medley was much taller. Don Henley, Englebert Humperdink, Kenny Loggins, and Robert Plant are much taller than I thought they were.
Interesting video. Thank you for your hard work. I'm 5'7"and so much taller than so many men. It's very difficult to how tall people are in movies, TV, videos unless they're standing beside someone that you know is tall. It doesn't matter. Their talent makes them "tall".😊
I’m a 6’3/4” guitar player, I would tower over some of these singers. I had no idea how many of the legends were under 5’5” tall! One of the tricks they used in MTV videos was to put the short singers a couple of feet closer to the camera to even up the visual perception of the band heights, Steve Perry was always in front of the rest of Journey in photos and videos like that.
I have a couple interesting takeaways from this: Michael Hutchence, who is my favorite singer, is often compared to Jim Morrison and Mick Jagger. And he happens to be the same height as both of them, 5'10." Second, I knew Marc Bolan was on the shorter side, but he made it work for him. If he were over 6', he would look ridiculous as an androgynous glam rocker. I happen to think he's quite adorable.😉 Third, I was surprised that SRV, Billy Ocean and Bob Marley are that short. I'm also surprised that Little Richard, Barry Manilow and Stevie Wonder are as tall as they are. I agree w/those who said it might be because they sit at a piano. Fourth, it's amazing to me the reactions to Robert Plant's height. Most say he's taller and one said he doesn't give off tall man's energy. Well, I think he does. And I heard Jimmy Page thought he was the bouncer when came to hear him sing because he was so tall. My mom, who isn't the biggest Zeppelin fan, always refers to him as the tall blond one. My cable provider has a classic rock channel that plays Led Zeppelin and shows various photos. My favorite is one where Bonham is sitting, Indian style, JPJ is squatting next to him, Jimmy is leaning over them and Robert, wearing dark pants, a shirt that actually fits for once, a necklace and his curly blond hair, is standing next to Jimmy w/his hands behind his back. I dare anyone to tell me, who looks at that photo, that he doesn't look over 6'. If I had grown-up in the 70s instead of the 80s, Robert Plant would be my favorite singer instead of Michael Hutchence. But he's my second so that's the way goes. Timing is everything🤣🤣
Well said! I think many people have seen plant in later life and just assumed because he’s shrunk a bit (which I think he definitely has) that he was never over 6’. We know the truth 😉
Joey Ramone was indeed very tall. I stood next to him at a Bow wow wow show at the Ritz in NYC sometime in the 1980’s. He was pretty shy actually, but very polite.
Somehow, I thought Steve Perry was taller. He looked so tall & thin I guess I assumed he was about 6’. And it was interesting to not that as the Gibb brothers got younger they got shorter.
That was so interesting. Hypnotic and calming repetitive music and all. Gotta say I'm surprised to see some of my favorite singers and musicians are much shorter than I assumed.
The Bee Gees just prove that pants can lengthen your legs and make you look taller. How tight those pants are can determine now high you can sing too. I thought Maurice Gibb was at least 6'2''. Barry Manilow looks like a 5'6'' type of guy. Excellent upload, Datawatch. I'm going to check out your video on _Classic Hollywood Actresses_ Height Comparison video now.
If you're going to include Ringo as a singer, you really should include Roger Taylor, who sang lead on several Queen songs, backing vocals on all of them, and famously hit the high note in "Bohemian Rhapsody." He also has 5 solo albums.
Suppose I could have done. You are the first person to ever suggest him though. I’ve had hundreds of suggestions for ringo after leaving him out of previous videos
@@DataWatch. Fair enough. The Beatles did consider themselves to be four equal members, while Queen definitely had Freddie as their frontman, despite all of them singing, and both Brian and Roger occasionally taking lead vocals.
I absolutely love this, and thank you for mentioning my distant cousin Marc Bolan, only 2 inches taller than me. I have to ask though, are you absolutely certain about David Bowie's height? I once stood 6 ft from him and I'm 5'3, and he was a tiny man. I find it difficult to believe he was just under 5 ft 10 inches.
I think it depends on the sources. Like someone's age, someone's height and maybe weight are sometimes reported incorrectly. Vanity might be in play. Maybe someone doesn't like the person they're managing or promoting,etc.. I've read a few books about Bowie and at least one put him around five ten. Then again, you saw him. Stick to your guns.
@@kathryntitus9647 Yes!...being thin definitely contributes to having a taller countenance...I was amazed to find out that the members of AC/DC were so short!...like 5-3" on up to Bon Scott, who seemed taller by comparison--but he was only 5'8".
I’m with you on this. It’s like Simon and Garfunkel. I get lots of comments on my other video saying they thought art was taller. I just think he looks tall next to his sidekick

@@DataWatch. Actors too!...the story goes, that someone asked Burt Reynolds if he was 6' tall...he said --"Son, no leading man in Hollywood will admit to being less than 6' tall!"....Burt was 5'11". but rather athletic and lanky, so appeared taller.
I never realized that so many musicians were under 6’. I knew Mic Fleetwood was but I didn’t know he was 6’6”. Awesome video. Thank you 😊 for creating & sharing. 🤟🏼💖🎶
I was honestly so surprised at a few of these! There are quite a few on here who just give off tall or lanky energy (like Bowie) so I always assumed they'd be taller than me if even by just a little (I'm 177cm). Then there are several I thought would be shorter (like Barry Manilow and Jim Morrison) than they turned out to be because something about them just feels 5'7 or 5'8. There are a few who are well known for being short or tall but then you're shocked by how much. Prince and Joey Ramone at such opposite ends.
I knew a fellow who was a lighting designer who, among his other tasks, prepared the spotlights for the performers. He was disbelieving when he asked David Bowie's advance man for his real height for the purpose of setting the lights: 5'5"! He was as shocked as I was to hear it, but the show must go on and all that and DB was 5'5".
@@DataWatch. I hear you, but I suspect Jagger is also a shrimp. Another unverifiable anecdote: many years ago my girlfriend at the time was living on W 74th in NYC as was Jagger. @@DataWatch. Publicity photos are staged. Keith is 5'9" and Mick about the same. I'm 6'2" and passed by Mick Fleetwood at his restaurant in DC. He's tall, but seemed about 6'4", but tall people tend to slouch so sometimes it's hard to say.
Such an eclectic & broad range of singers with a few surprises, at least for me. Funny how some people appear to be so much shorter or taller than they actually are.
Seeing how many are under 5'7" it makes me think the effort to be rock stars/musicians is due to a complex and a lack of girlfriends which would explain the groupie life when they did make it big.
Always interesting to see the imagery/pics of all the famous people you come with and there was a lot of them 🤩👍 I really don't play favorites but if I go back to a time when it all really meant something to me it would be my Rock era and Robert Plant by no doubt was one of my favorite singers! Wow, as a 5'6" boomer woman I'd never have guessed so many male stars were that height. I have read and heard that our attraction to height is built-in maybe through evolution. Recall a show where women were shown a successful, well educated short man and a tall man without and the women chose the tall. Maybe they thought they could change him. LOL Thanks for your hard work on this project and I will subscribe and look at your other interesting offerings.
It may have been mentioned before, but Tony Hadley of Spandau Ballet is 6'4". We saw a performance by Kip Winger and met him afterwards. My wife is 5'6" and she was easily 2 to 3 inches taller than him, so I'm guessing he's about 5'3". He put on a really good show too!
I guessed spandau started in 1980 although I could have been wrong. Obviously I used names that were active before the 80s. He is in part 1 of this male singer collection, about 6’4 thereabouts yes

Back in the 80s KISS had the reputation of being the tallest band (even without the platform boots) and members of AC/DC were known to be very short. As a teenager I once was face to face with Lemmy of Motorhead, one of my heroes, and I was shocked to see that I was taller than him. In my mind he should have been a giant.
Ace and Gene were the only members from the original makeup era that were actually over 6 foot without the heels. Ironically Bruce Kulick (who never wore platform boots or makeup) was the tallest member ever to be in KISS at 6 foot 3”

I have to admit that quite a few of these heights surprised me! Some I was "sure" were short (like Barry Manilow...6 feet? Really? I always thought he was tiny!) And some I was shocked at how short they were! Cool video!
Yes it’s true! Thank you 🙏

You make some valid points. And not to mention all the stuff that’s pumped into food these days.
I appreciate you, thank you so much 😊
A lot of thought went into rationing, (at least in the U.K.) Rations were meant to be as nutritious as they could be in the circumstances.

You will like my next video very much! I guarantee it

Hypnotic video. Kudos.
Wow thank you 😊
I have a couple interesting takeaways from this:
Michael Hutchence, who is my favorite singer, is often compared to Jim Morrison and Mick Jagger. And he happens to be the same height as both of them, 5'10."
Second, I knew Marc Bolan was on the shorter side, but he made it work for him. If he were over 6', he would look ridiculous as an androgynous glam rocker. I happen to think he's quite adorable.😉
Third, I was surprised that SRV, Billy Ocean and Bob Marley are that short.

WOW WOW WOW!! So so many, some I saw in person and thought that they were taller, some shorter, too too many to pick a favorite, you listed a few I hadn't thought of in a very long time, thank you for all the hard work. (Your making me feel old 😂)
@@JuneStarritt haha
Not only do we need more cowbells, we need more country singers! -- Waylon, Merle, George, Conway, Alabama, Oak Ridge Boys, Statler Bros., etc.
Be nice if you’d suggested them on my post. Shame
I love Elvis ❤️ saw him in person and I saw Blake Shelton too.
Blake is 6’5 😊
Being I started out as a little girl loving Elvis, I love tall men ❤
@@delladawn1149 Blake is in the tallest male singer video
No, we don't!
I’ve had many people claiming he was taller than I listed him
@@DataWatch. I'm 5'11 and he looked about 1 inch shorter than me from what I remember so it correlates with the 5'10 in your chart
@@alephalpha no substitute for seeing them in the flesh I guess
Ace and Gene were the only members from the original makeup era that were actually over 6 foot without the heels. Ironically Bruce Kulick (who never wore platform boots or makeup) was the tallest member ever to be in KISS at 6 foot 3”

I appreciate all the hard work. Lots are mentioned and the pics are great!
I did my best. Thanks
Damn, Prince is 5'2" and ran the basketball court on Charlie Murphy
I had to go look at the story. I’d not heard about it 🤣
😂😂😊Prince played Bball in HS and they said he was really good.
@@cynthiajackson7602 I heard that
Chappelle show. Great episode
I started watching. Said I am too busy for this! Kept watching….Tom Jones is shorter than I thought. Turning off now. Whoa Buddy Holly was 5’11”. No more. Elvis Presley was a Tall boy. Julio Iglesias. 6’ of sexy. Meatloaf ! Big boy. No more….Neal Diamond was 6’. HUH. Not King Cole the giant of a singer. I can’t look away! The kids can wait,I have to finish this. Gene Simmons is 8’ tall, this must be wrong! Oh Barry White, my first baby boy. This was so interesting. Thank you for all that hard work. But curse you for keeping me from my work.. (not really). Well done.
Haha thank you. Make sure those kids are sorted ☺️
This is so interesting and well put together. I'm an over 5 "9 lady and a lot of my music icons are what i consider short. It doesn't make me love them any less though it's their voices or guitar that stand out.
I was surprised about Billy Joel and Sinatra though
Some short fellas for sure
