Is this really the best we can expect for £3000 now? The 2023 Giant Propel Advanced 2 Aero Road Bike

  • I am so conflicted. I wanted to hate it. However, it seems like ‪@RideGiantBicycles‬ have come up with something pretty good. This is an important bike for young road racers. Something fast, that will take some hammer and look good. It is more than 10% more expensive than the 2022 model, but looks so much better. What do you think?

The thing I like about Giant direct to consumer model is that it still goes through a local shop. So you have someone who knows Giant Bikes that puts it together for you and it still includes that local aspect

    • @Mapdec
      @Mapdec  Рік тому +1

I’ve been trying to get more details on this. The new model is a bit different. It looks like the local shop has to choose to fulfil the order and has a tight time schedule to accept the order. I do wonder how it works if the bike gets discounted. I’m sure creases will iron out.

Late to the game but unlike wheels, UCI certification on frames has nothing to do with quality or safety.

Let's hope the sensibly integrated cables on this is enough of a differential that they can keep external gear cables at least on the TCR for mechanical shifting, lining it up against the Aethos etc now this is more of a rounded package.

Over 9kg according to 'Biking Point' UA-cam channel- they have done some weigh-ins. I was dead set on getting one of these but the weight issue has changed my mind.Realise the wheels are probably quite heavy but The Advanced 1 model isn't much lighter and weighs 8.5kg in Small frame size. The weight was the issue for me so instead I've now ordered a TCR pro 2 with SLR1 wheels I managed to get 20% off so worked out cheaper than this propel in the end.Admittedly it's not got the integrated cabling and the latest windtunnel frame design but it's over a kilogram lighter.

Very confused about your comments on the S and XS sizes being at risk of to overlap because of the long trail.
The geo sheet is incomplete but shows they have reduced the headtube angle, likely without changing the fork rake to preserve the wheelbase and front centre. This creates the longer trail as a direct consequence of avoiding that toe overlap.

But more trail is almost always associated with less overlap?
If the S and XS had the same trail as a M then the reduced front centre would increase the risk of overlap.
The wheelbase is within a few mm at the same chainstay so why would this be an issue of overlap?
Surely the issue for smaller riders is that this workaround has changed the steering response not caused a toe problem?

Hello. I just switched from MTB (later with extra set of slick wheels) to (endurance) road bike.
You have mentioned young riders getting to more serious cycling sport. But this is similar for me.
As road cycling community tends to by quite posh, it is hard to figure out, how to get into proper cycling. (and have created vids about cycling being out of touch).
So for me it is quite lot of guess work to find, what would fit me. Like: would I perform better with more aggressive geometry? Is Endurance bike lame? Should I go broke to have all the bells and whistles?
Guys like GCN are not too helpful. At least Cycling Weekly started to ask similar questions. And then are channels like yours, Hambini, Trace Velo, Peak Torque, ...
    Thanks for building the community.

@@Mapdec I had wonderful opportunity to use friend's 105 Canyon Endurace CF SL for whole '22 season. It fit me perfectly. So I bought 2023 model (just CF without SL) and once I took it for the first ride, I was like "Yesssss! We're home.".
But again, what should I train towards? Are GCN ideals way to go? And my personal answer was to train for what I love - more relaxed, but really long rides as frequently, as it gets.
And I believe, lots of other riders would need to realise the same think, as they are getting into cycling.

Jan Heine of Bicycle Quarterly is a huge proponent of steel bikes, and he talks about how their springiness gives you energy back or some such (I'm skeptical; think it's more an improved comfort allowing you to put down more power). Bike Fit Advisor on UA-cam has also talked about how the ergonomic benefits of a custom steel frame will be faster for you than an aero carbon frame. And I haven't seen the video itself, but I watched Waynos Fotos' video commenting on some other biketuber testing a high-end titanium frame against a top aero frame, and the titanium won. Plus Peak Torque's video comparing disc brakes vs rim brakes and finding almost no aero difference, makes me wonder if even Hambini underestimates how turbulent the air is around your frame. He's said that you can have a perfect aerofoil and it'll still perform shit in the eye wall of a hurricane. *On smaller bikes, the trail is elongated* mainly because they keep the same fork to save on manufacturing and inventory (more skus) costs. So to avoid major toe overlap they reduce substantially the head angle.
You may still get a little toe overlap because they put a 170mm crank instead of a 165mm, again, to save on manufacturing costs and inventory (more skus) costs.
Smaller bikes would benefit from 650c wheels to maintain a 73° head angle but the manufacturers have phase these out to, you've guest it, reduce manufacturing and inventory (more skus) costs. Please don't give me that 💩 about cassette ratio issues. It doesn't hold water.
In conclusion, the smaller bikes handle like 💩 but manufacturers have reduced their costs and maintained their profit margin.
    Isn't that great kids 👍?

It's a very good looking bike but think I'll pass..... I'd never fit any of their off the shelf sizes unless you get to "pick'n'mix".... I'd be looking for the "XS/S" ETT, with the headtube length of the M or L as I've got long legs/short torso...seeing as it's "slammed" and follows all the latest cable jamming fashions if I went for the M the 100mm stem would be way too long, cranks too long and 36/52, sh*t for hilly areas with an 11-30 cassette, SS derailleur so maxed out at 30T, and the seatpost looks minimally offset too, any wriggle room there to get it forward....? It's got a PF BB, no thanks (Has Hambini reamed Giant?!)...
That's the kind of bike you'd buy and spend the rest of your time (and money) replacing everything on it because there's SFA adjustability, and it still wouldn't fit properly!! You'd have a box of spares so big you could start a bike shop lol

@@Mapdec Sorry for it sounding like a rant lol.... I was lucky enough to fit what CRC were offering in the 105 rim package, upgraded the SS to GS and the 11-30 to 11-34 but all is not lost the "spare mech+derailleur" will be coupled with the £70 Sensah Team Pro shifters on their way from China to upgrade my bike on the KICKR for a better close ratio gearbox.... (You must've seen Merlins silly prices last week on Shimano- picked up a "spare" 105 chainset for £99 because I doubt you could even source 2 individual chainrings for that! (Even the "SenicX" chainsets from AliExpress are dearer than £99!!) At risk of repeating myself, some may call it "hoarding" but I'm future proofing my biking, I think big changes are already underway and it's heading to dog eat dog for survival for many companies...??
