@@nazibkhan775 Nah, it's his age XD I've never had a relationship in my life and didn't want one, but loved harem and romance during high school. Now they're just too cringe
@@PichuElric bro i feel you, i remembered back in quarantine i just sit thru harem and romance anime 24/7 even in online classes , now i just cant finish and cant bother with it anymore.
It began with Domestic Girlfriend. Domestic Girlfriend is LITERALLY one to one TV Soap Opera beat, including the shittiest own goal ending for the sake of plot twist.
Connor brings up a good point. I really like romcom anime, but I'm really tired of the series going on and on as will-they-won't-they and then ending with the "I love you" moment. That's not the only development or milestone that there is in a relationship. A good example where they get away from this is HoriMiya. They had the confession in like episode 5 or 6 and the rest of the series goes on with the MCs as a couple.
When I started My Love Story I thought the same thing: Oh great, another anime with miss communication and nobody saying how they feel. But they did away with that shit in like a couple episodes.
Domestic Girlfriend is not a good story, but I will give it this, it did make me understand the fixation of an older age woman with soap operas; it’s a dumpster fire you cannot stop watching.
I don’t know that I agree about not being able to stop watching. Both the characters and the plot were so badly written that I struggled to watch the next episode. There are definitely other “junk food” anime that have have kept me hooked though.
Honestly, glad for all the good things said about Kaguya-sama. Just saw the movie last night and it really reinforced to me what an excellent anime it is
@@Amuro1X really? I read the entire manga and I would say, the movie is at the peak of Kaguya sama already. The writing starts going downhill from there but overall, I still love Kaguya sama nonetheless. Truly the GOAT of romance.
@bennieboi3683 I disagree honestly. There's lots of stuff left unresolved with Ishigami, and I enjoy seeing the couple actually, you know, date. That's what makes Kaguya special. It doesn't just end at the confession.
@@Amuro1X same the only part that i would have any critisicms with is the final arc and even then many of them just boil down to it being paced to fast for my preference and yeah this movie only covered 1 of 3 peak arcs to come
It's especially hilarious when the MC of a harem anime is shown to be interested in the opposite sex. But when any of his SUPER HOT friends try to get with him, all of a sudden he's too embarrassed and flustered. It's just a tiring trope honestly.
I feel like what’s problematic is that shoujo romance is disappearing while shonen romance lives on. There were plenty of great shoujo from the 2000s that moved past the will they won’t they thing and were AMAZING stories.
@@suzu8253 sure. Hana Kimi, Lovely Complex and bokura ga Ita from the top of my head. Lovely complex is a perfect comedy. bokura ga ita isn’t popular in the west but was rly popular in Japan. the story is rly good and the portrayal is really raw and realistic. Hana kimi is a classic that’s been remade into dramas many times in Asia
@@suzu8253 Try "Angel Next door wants to spoil me rotten" Manga's new but the light novel is quite a head the anime even outpace the manga the anime is 12 episode it will make you want to scream at the screen to marry already but not as drag on as other romance anime tldr: best wholesome romance in years a little bit drag on but only because you feel like they already cross the line in like few episodes and the only thing that is rotten are my teeth cause I think I got diabetes from the show
Kaguya Sama for the win for sure! I remember enjoying Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku as a casual watch with adults navigating the relationship instead of high schoolers. Oresuki and Fruit of Grisaia were enjoyable harem shows for me. Re:Life though, underated show and very enjoyable romance series!
Fruits of Grisaia literally is a harem show without romance so technically the appeal of that show does not really involve falling in love part. The others though I genuinely agree with you.
Makes makes Love is War so appealing is that they parody all the romcom tropes and then put all the styles of a shojo, battle shonen, and seinen as well. I mean there is a hell of a lot of foreshadowing. It first started out as a gag manga with two tsundere's playing mind games to confess then it morphed into working up the courage because they were scared as hell. Just the character development along with the great music of Masayuki Suzuki makes this series one the S tier series especially when we get to our four page glory in the anime.
One interesting thing about the Romance genre is how your view of it can change over time. They used to bore me to death, because I thought "Nothing happens". I didn't see, trust, or really understand feelings back then, so all I saw was a bunch of people acting like idiots for reasons I couldn't understand. Then I got into writing and started taking therapy, and came to understand feelings a lot better. Since then, I've suddenly become a huge fan of romance. When a character does something that seems dumb, I'm suddenly super excited to find out what complex web of feelings and expectations caused them to do that. Instead of going, "This is dumb, that made no logical sense", I'd be like, "Oh! I get it. It's because he felt this way, but wishes he felt that way, and didn't want her to realize he feels this way, because then she'd feel that way." So, it's gone from being an exercise in frustration to being a fun puzzle to unravel.
@@RGC_animation True. It's possible, if it stagnates for too long and doesn't go anywhere. But, people simply do dumb things when under the influence of baggage and hang-ups, especially if they don't realize it yet. Still, I understand the frustration. I hate watching disaster movies because of all the screaming and irrational behavior people exhibit when they think they're at risk of dying. I think I tolerate it more in romance because I don't always pick up right away why characters act that way. Once it finally hits me, it's a moment of surprise clarity.
Wotakoi is great. But half of it was literally just delayed high school puberty moments. The third couple is the worst offender. And I honestly love it, but I can see other people consider it boring.
Also "My sempai is annoying" is a good adult romance anime with adults I think the "Highschool trope" has a peak until 26yo people, like most people doesn't want to remember highschool since most weebs and geeks didnt enjoy those days or didnt have a highschool sweetheart to relate.
@@TodayiAteMyCat I get why some may not like it & tbh a story like this gets stale in long run but it's bite sized episodic nature plus the characters being immensely likeable made it a great watch for me.
Personally I find it mundane. First few episodes seems kinda promising but at the end it’s just prolonged. The plot isn’t progressing and character development is going nowhere. They just show their backstory with absolute no gradual approach at all. I mean sure I guess it’s a decent show but I wouldn’t recommend
Something pointed out to me recently was that most of the romance anime that's coming out now is in the shounen/seinen main genre. The romance anime with the "feelings" stopped being made even though the manga still sell well. Where's the modern version of Fruits Basket (not the remake)? KareKano? It's out there, but isn't being made into an anime 🤷🏾♀️
It comes in waves. All depends on what sells atm and what needs to be advertised. If a manga sells well WITHOUT an anime to promote it, then why would you go and produce an anime for it? As much as we like to think of anime as the main product, it is not. It is in fact usually a side project created to advertise the original material. Hence the many MANY light novel anime adaptations.
@@lenleon3699 By that logic we don't need My Hero Academia, Bleach, or Demon Slayer anime. Those were all very popular before they got an anime, and got even MORE popular with one. So if anime is only about promoting, then all the more reason to promote well selling shoujo/josei romance manga. To get an even bigger audience.
@@Orion_44 Even if Demon Slayer got big after, there are plenty of manga that were popular who still got an anime anyway. My point still stands. I want more shoujo/josei romance anime again.
Wait, did Joey finish Horimiya? Sure, it was a load of nothing, but that's because they got together like very early. So the whole "will they, won't they?" Was answered long ago
That’s what I was thinking. It’s established relationship for most of its run, they’re together by volume 5. Which I guess if that’s not for you that’s fine, but was kinda refreshing to see in a sea of will they won’t they.
definitely sounded like an inaccurate characterization. however yeah I will say I was slightly less interested in the show after they got together (I haven't read the entire manga)
joey is literally full of shit half the time, they were praising the horimiya anime when it was airing and joey literally was cumming and saying “its sooo good” but now its a boring romance, like ok buddy
IMO I think his videos show his preferences more than whatever stream of consciousness shit they mention in the podcast. They have outright admitted they stick to a position on the podcast for entertainment purposes (hence things like Joey being a constant fence-sitter).
I haven't watched many romance anime, but I love Kaguya-sama and Toradora. Saw the Kaguya movie last night, and it was a blast. We had a lot of good laughs in my theater.
Kaguya is one of my favorite anime and manga, but Toradora on the other hand was boring as hell for me. I forced myself to watch 17 episodes and it never got any better.
Just watched the Kaguya sama movie yesterday and I gotta say: ir definitely is one of, If not THE BEST romance anime I've ever seen in my life. It's just so fucking good
What was Joey talking about with Horimiya? I've only seen the anime(recent one, not the OVA) but the main couple got together pretty early. It was one of the most detailed romance anime, to the point they address sex/fetishes and marriage once they've been dating a long time. Let alone other parts of realistic teen drama that most shows never cover.
I think some series feel longer than they are because you've been following them for longer as well. You could binge read 300 chapters and it won't feel long but if you're following any series weekly, then even 100 chapters feel like an eternity cause you've been basically reading it for 100 weeks instead of binging it in one.
I think Quintuplets is definitely the best harem (that I've seen) because it doesn't feel like all the girls fall for him for no reason other than "he's the main character". Also the little "mystery" element they add to it also solves my other problem with other harem animes which is the fact that they always make it seem like each of the girls has a chance with the MC when it's painfully obvious from episode 1 which girl they're gonna choose, whereas with Quintuplets I honestly didn't have much of an idea what to expect until it was nearing the end.
You're right that too many anime make it obvious the main girl will win, but another strength of Quints is that even if your favorite girl did/didn't win, you can respect what the steps the author took to make it so it feels like a satisfying, non-crap ending that didn't make sense. My least favorite won, but I can't disagree with the ending.
After finishing Clannad, I honestly kinda have the same feeling ngl. In romance animes, I personally want to see a realistic kind of romance and nowadays that's kinda rare to come across.
It's too high IQ for standard slice of life romance. Shit is based on actual novel. And have you guys checked the extra episodes? Two of the side characters (middle school students of course) actually went to love hotel for valentine. It was so subtle, many of my friends missed it. But the story acknowledged that different couples have different development pace.
Peak romance. The motivation and awkwardness before relationship feel too realistic. It's the most by the textbook romance but damn it executed the cliche so well.
@@enigmaarcs8559 It also tackles the difficulty of living independently while maintaining relationships as high school student, which is hard and they gave up on it. (Funny enough, people who commit to long distance relationships has 60% chance surviving college. Which THEY DID HERE.)
After reading more than 200 chapters of Rent a Girlfriend you can't stop anymore. It's like a cult you went to deep in and can't leave, it's part of you now.
Every freaking time i read it's new chapter, everytime I complaint, everything i meme it, rant on it, trash it, always mention " rent a trash " .... And still proceed to wait for new chapter 😑
@Fred Gopher nothing has changed, basically. Sometimes, it looks like a big character development will happen but after the event they act like nothing happened.
This is literally why My Love Story!! was the GOAT. Wholesome as fuck anime where the couple hooks up within 3-4 episodes and the rest of the series is about how they handle the relationship.
Oh god I love that anime so much 😂 The author also made a BL which just recently got a live action, and it has to be the most shoujou, lighthearted BL I've ever read
@@victoriazero8869 I can not explain with words, but I can provide you with context via a link to video. These are clips from a stream Conner makes appearances on. ua-cam.com/video/kwxj-Ile-0g/v-deo.html
I don't really pay too much attention to romance anime in school settings/with teen MCs either, it has to be really good for me to consider watching it. The recent ones I particularly have been enjoying recently (hidden gems to me at least lol) are Recovery of an MMO Junkie (I recommend this one if you're a fan of MMOs and an adult cast, I personally relate to it a lot), Tomo-Chan Is a Girl! (red haired tomboy MC with a fang who declared her love to her crush in the first episode), and Love After World Domination (basically the Red Power Ranger dating his enemy).
I never was high on romance anime because "Will they or won't they?" is a sign you can't write romance. The ones I enjoy the most have romance be a secondary thing or have established couples. Really, the fact that Sakura Trick is unironically one of the best romance anime of all time despite the stupid plot ESPECIALLY the last episodes is because they make out every episode. The romance is secondary to the yuri fanservice in a romance anime!
What do you even think romance is made out of? Literally the most critically acclaimed romance stories are exactly what you described as them to be. Ever heard of Pride and Prejudice? Romance inevitably has mystery in it. That's the quintessential part of it that, without it, romance wouldn't be romance. Liking an anime like Sakura Trick where two girls are constantly mashing their mouts together might provide YOU mystery. But to me those Sakura petals and exhanges of kisses in slightly different environments is not poetic enough.
@@mikael9325 Oh please, anime romance isn't mystery most of the time, it is dragging out a story for hundreds of chapters because the two are too pathetic to get on with it.
Record of Grancrest War was a neat fantasy show where they basically killed the will they wont they like in the first half and it was neat to see the MCs relationship and motivations evolve as a result of it. Given the ending of it felt like utter chaos, still a fun show where the romance felt like a secondary thing
I don't want a romance for that either, I watch how 2 people get closer and start to love each other. Although I hate it when many just ends on the confession, I want the dating part as well and a timeskip to marriage if possible
ive always preferred romance as a subplot, and not as the mainplot. imo romantic love is part of the character arc, not the main plot. hell even a strictly romance show/manga needs some type of plot device thats unrelated to love at a base level.
I think the best romances have usually been really good comedies. Actually I want to say that good romances always have another genre, because pure romance alone doesn't usually carry a long term story. For more slice of life style shows, comedy goes really well with it.
EXACTLY, ON POINT. Pure romance is shite. Even more so, romance drama's as if we don't see them often. Comedy just carries things well. I'd watch any show if it has entertaining humour, it doesn't have to be flashy, or well produced.
I think there's an irony in romance genre in anime, and that it's usually more interesting when the show is not tagged as romance anime, like let's say for example Vanitas - I really loved how Vanitas messes around with Jeanne it reminded me of the cat and mouse game Kaguya and Miyuki were playing with each other. Monogatari series bought like an interesting dynamic to the romance genre, where it's shown but to me it was more about subtlety and dynamics between characters. Then again, I'm not really into romance anime, harem anime on the other hand is just for me to see whether how they deal with the dynamic of it, because usually it irritates me that 1st girl barely gets any notice and I don't really wanna see it again, buuut... there's Monogatari and Bunny Girl Senpai so... I'm always looking forward to those...
For me romance isn't important at all. Most romance in anime kinda mid. Unless it's a romcom drama anyway. Romance in anime is rarely if ever a love story, it's more like childish fantasy, not inherently bad but I can't truly value that, if it's not a romcom or if it's taking away from what I am watching a show for. Idk, it's a romcom or an actual romantic/SOL drama and there's no romance then sure, that'd probably suck, but if it's literally anything else, Idgaf even slightly. Also, I am a proud hater of harem, 99% of it anyway, even the good ones I don't really rate.. Similar thing with isekai romance, especially with the goofy premises, I cannot even man. I tried, but I can't anymore, if it ain't mad funny or carried by other aspects, then just bruh.. It's probably because I am too old to enjoy that kinda thing now or idk. Anyway thanks for coming to my ted rant.
Most of the market agree. This is even evident in webtoon/manhwa market. Romance in other genres is like a little bit of seasoning, great in moderation. A webtoon/manhwa with a complete, utter absence of romance elements just don't do well. Even if it's primarily action, or even HORROR.
Same to be honest. I love fictional romance and I would watch any romance movie/anime/show if it manage to catch my attention. Even games too but that one’s more broad as I simply like fun gameplay. Though there are shows/movies/games that doesn’t need it IMO.
My advice to the boys if they're looking for a Romance anime is stop watching Romcoms and instead watch actual romance anime, because the thing with normal Romance is that pacing isn't at a snail's speed and the character aren't the bog standard one dimensional characters you see at most romcoms. I have watched The Raven of The Inner Palace last season and it honestly made me realise how much I was missing on, it made me finally remember what romance was actually and how normal it actually was instead of what Romcoms made it out to be.
Well i do enjoy comedy more than romance. Serious romance animes can be very hard to watch... Imagine Kaguya-sama but without all the comedic "filler" content, how horrible would that be...
@@QWERTY-gp8fd I would say most of those are not romance anime, just interesting shows in general with a bit of romance sprinkled on it. Steins gate is about the mistery, time travel, and how characters react to it. Fate is just to big of a universe to pinpoint down to love, most people like it for what it is with or without the romance aspect. Clannad is a proper serious romance actually, one of the best ones. Spice and wolf have a good romance as well but for me I enjoy it more because of the characters, economics and the world building. No idea about gosick
I was going to disagree, until I heard him say "high school". I agree. I really wish there were more adult romances. Not with adult content, just a romance story featuring adult-aged characters.
I highly suggest getting into webtoons. A lot of them are adult aged characters going through adult problems, and it's genuinely so refreshing. As much as I love anime, I do hate how it's mostly pandered to teens. I just don't resonate with that anymore. Webtoons are great though, because it's nice to see characters 21-35+ going through relationship/work/parenthood struggles in a way that are more mature and down to earth, but still have some of that exaggerated charm that anime has.
I want an anime about old people finding love. Like a 60 year old virgin who's made all the wrong choices in life but find a bud in the end. Like, is there a single anime about badass or down to earth old people?
I don't usually watch romance but lately I've been watching the Ice guy and his cool female colleague and it just gives me life. Idk if it's because it's NOT a high-school romance or if it's because it's just a feel good, no drama, doesn't take itself seriously kinda show. Probably both lol
Yeah that’s an odd take. It’s more someone who has been a bit of a loner for a long time is making a friend and he does like her but at the same time is worried about screwing it up because he likes what he has so would be very cautious and slow with any kind of romance move and want to be totally sure about it because he could otherwise screw up his now very valuable friendship
Gojo is a great lesson to all women. Sometimes it's better to be straightforward and just tell the guy "Listen, I wanna bone." It would save SO much trouble on both their ends.
The thing about romance is that it needs to be good (and maybe a bit deeper), and not so cliche-ish (except it’s like a comedy thing). And I don’t really like full on harem shows, I mean the show can have harem elements but there’s a point where it is enough. I actually have a lot of Romance manga, but not so much anime. Haha and Rent-a-girlfriend really is somehow addictive even so I hate it everytime I read it but then I still continue…
The best romance anime is nana imo. Kaguya sama is number 2 for me, both are 10/10 though. Started watching romantic killer and tomochan and both are fun so far.
romance anime the average dude hasnt seen: fruits basket, maid sama, sasaki & miyano, snow white with the red hair etc.. (note: romance is the main or subplot)
Can't believe Garnt didn't mentioned Nagatoro (and the teasing genre) in his romance anime take when its the romance anime he just recently made a video of it and gave positive feedbacks. Maybe his mind is clouded by domestic girlfriend and rent a girlfriend, or still in awe of Kaguya-sama's the best anime love confessions of all time.
This year (2023), an anime adaptation of my currently most favorite romance manga is coming out. It's Suki na Ko ga Megane wo Wasureta, The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses. No over-the-drama. Just plain superbly cute and wholesome with hilarious adorable moments. It's another teen school romance but I believe even adults can enjoy. It's relatable and nostalgic of your first love experiences, or which you wish you had. I hope that the anime studio does it justice, capturing the same vibe displayed in the manga. I'm looking forwards to you guys' impressions on it.
I’m in the same position of Garnt as, I’m too in a happy relationship but way before that I really got off romance anime since it’s always the same, but Kaguya Sama really DID hit different that all the rest, and the only way that I can explain it is, it made me feel like a teenager again, and the same flustered feeling I use to get when talking to girls and watching other romance shows, what a great series kaguya is
It's crazy, but I never expected nagatoro to be the romance show where there's noticeable character development as the show goes on. Sure it has the slice of life anime stuff you've come to know and love, but something will happen in an episode and you'll be like "Damn....what a change from the character we've seen from episode 1" and it just feels good :)
Then you would love "Oregairu". I just love this show, it's my favorite romance show, because the main male character provides exceptionally deep observations of human nature in his dialogues + he is an extremer loner, but not a dick at the same time + there is a HUGE character development between the first season and even the end of season 2 (if you ever heard the "I want something genuine" quote, then it's from "Oregairu"), even more development at the end of season 3 -- mostly for the main male character (Hachiman), but for 2 other main female characters too (Yukino and Yui). The story is completed (3 seasons), it has a satisfactory ending, so even though the author is doing something extra, it's not so necessary.
Back when I was a lonely 16 year old with no romantic experience, I used to watch far more action and adventure type of anime than romance. But now ... now it's different. I'm not the same anymore. I'm a lonely 23yo with still no romantic experience, and I've changed to romance anime/manga.
Totally agree Dress Up Darling needs to progress the plot (or release a little faster). For waiting one month between chapters it feels like it doesn't go anywhere
Here is one for Garnt to test, there is a Romance anime about a Married couple, i think it was " Cant understand my Otaku Husband" or something like that.
You guys should definitely check out "Do Chokkyuu Kareshi x Kanojo". It's fucking amazing, no harem, no useless time wasting, a Chad MC and equally amazing FMC.
Connor's "nothing ever happens" stance is why I love Kaguya sama so much Its favorite running gag seems to be "Oh you thought this was a one off gag? SURPRISE it's actually an important plot point and we were progressing the story the whole time >:D"
Horimiya being a new template of romance and straight to the point that shows you the couple after they are together, its not the same as other romance and they just blame it like that....
@@jankyyard5610 i watched rascal does not dream of bunny girl sempai too, and i cant say its better, and no, horimiya doesnt get boring, you are just used to the general romance animes where is a lot of cliche.
The first 1 minute 30s almost completely destroyed my love for the romance genre and a show I'm loving thats airing right now called The Ice Guy and his Cool Female Colleague. I literally had to search up the mangaka to check whether they were male to get myself to keep watching. I couldn't stop thinking about Connor & Joeys points before
If I am not mistaken, the dress up darling story is made by a woman, so it's not a male/female problem when writing, it's more so "does this person have any actual experience with romance". And in most cases than not, they just want to milk the series for as much it's worth it, which just sucks..
Maybe that's cause every anime/manga mentioned in this video is a shounen, even tho girls are the primary creator and consumer of the genre. But sure go off
yeah I confused when all of the title they mention are all shounen I don't even considered all those title romance in the first place more of a harem, slice of life, drama genre maybe because I seperate romcom & romance in the first place then only consider shoujo stuff as romance anime
Conner says he can't stand harems, but he loves Golden Boy, a show where the dude has six women chasing him by the end of the sixth episode. Are they saying nothing happens in Horimya? Man, in the anime the main couple go from hand-holding to confession to kissing to sex within 7 episodes. And the side characters are well developed as well. Sure nothing scandalous happens, but ti's a cut above other romcoms like Uzaki-chan. I'm disappointed to hear that the My Dress-Up Darling manga doesn't go anywhere. To be fair, I felt the lack of progression in the anime was fine because all of the dialogue and interactions were thematically tied together, giving the story weight which didn't require "confession-kiss-sex" progression. Biggest surprise for me this season is that Nagatoro season 2 has development (albeit slow). By episode six our boy, Senpai, basically asks Nagatoro out, which is more than can be said for the MC of Uzaki-chan at the end of it's second season. It does suck to run into an anime which has an interesting premise but no desire to develop it beyond the "will they, won't they (hold hands lol)" silliness i.e. Nisekoi. I enjoyed More Than A Married Couple But Not Lovers last season; it was good, but it's definitely at the phase now where if it gets a season 2 nothing plot-wise may happen, which would be a big piss-off. So far Tomo-chan is a Girl has been fun (cool premise and characters), but it definitely feels like the same "never gonna progress" feeling to it.
I mean the my dress up darling manga does have some really good moments that are gonna get animated and Marin wants to confess but the problem is that the pacing is not good the next chapter comes out in 2 days and is a new arc i hope to see some development
Connor hates most harems because of how generic and wimpy most of the protagonists are. There are a few he likes tho, he’s talked about The World God Only Knows and The Irregular at Magic High School in the past
I believe there are a variety of reasons as to why the boys don't care much about romance anymore. 1) there haven't been much good romance anime lately and most of the "romance" series are actually just dramas with romance or romcoms. 2) the boys are confusing romance with romcom. 3) they seem to forget that romance is a more subdued genre, it's works best as an add on to another genre or to flesh out the characters. And 4) because they have to give out their opinions online due to them being anitubers they always hyper analyze series to form an opinion of if it's good or bad and no longer can just sit down not care about how objectively good a series is and just enjoy the show.
I don’t understand Joeys take on Horimiya, both main characters like each other and get together early on, then it’s just following what they do in their relationship, they even have sex or it’s implied they do at least in the anime, I seriously don’t understand Joeys take, is he maybe confusing it with another show???
I thought I was a little over romance anime after all these years, and then yesterday I somehow rewatched Toradora in one sitting. I'm not over it. It's still a happy drug for me, and there simply isn't much good romance coming out at the moment. Far more enjoyable than actually trying to date.
I agree that High School romance gets boring after a while... that's why we now have the GOAT Yamada Kintetsu blessing us with that fucking perfect adult romance with not one but two whole series going on at the same time, blessed be that man!
Honestly, I don't think it's because he's married. I've been in a fulfilling relationship for 7 years and I'm still a huge sucker for well-written love stories. I just love romance so much! The problem here is that romance anime is dying imo. Aside from the very few exceptions like Kaguya-sama, Horimiya, My Dress Up Darling or Sasaki to Miyano, these days you either get a crappy fanservice dumpster of fire or the most boring most nothing-interesting-ever-happens type shit. They don't make classic romance shoujo anime anymore. Or perhaps we've grown tired of the clichés already 🤧
I actually gave up on Kaguya after season 2 because I felt like it was gonna be another My dress up darling where nothing progresses ever. But then I learned that there was a pay off and did not regret giving season 3 a chance, didn't feel like it overstayed it's welcome despite my belief it would. That's the problem with the longer form romance anime, it's just a sitcom with a weekly episode that never really adds to the whole story and it attaches itself too much to the "will they, won't they" BS. 'Will they, won't they' works, but not for 90+ chapters.
I feel like the romance in spy family is pretty good when it shows up cause it's short and subtle. If they had more of it I think it'd be a great romance anime
Honestly... What romance? There really isn't any. They have moments where they affirm each other as family and love each other platonically clearly, but I've barely seen anything resembling a hint of romantic love between Loid and Yor. Honestly I ship Loid with Fiona because their chemistry was off the charts compared to seeing Loid and Yor.
@@SonicMegaKing I don't see how you come to the conclusion that Loid and Fiona have any chemistry when Loid does not view Fiona in any romantic way at all. He respects her as a colleague and cares about her just as he would any one of his fellow spies but has not been shown to have any romantic feelings towards her. The small interactions between Loid and Yor are closer to what a healthy relationship looks like between a couple more than any of Loid and Fiona's interactions. They listen to each other and truly appreciate of each others support. Loid was truly appreciative when Yor told him he was doing a good job despite not being perfect when he was doubting himself because he is a perfectionist for example. Loid saw how Yor was feeling after the tennis match with Fiona and shared something about his childhood to encourage her. He didn't completely understand the situation of course, but that does not change the fact he acted out of character by sharing something extremely personal despite not needing to. I highly doubt he has ever told anybody, including Fiona, about something that personal.
Honestly, I can't do romance anime/manga about highschoolers. I'm older now, I can't relate to that anymore. I prefer reading mangas that depict romance more maturely as it is relatable, and mostly removes the cliche tropes that is a main problem in romance anime targeted for younger audiences. That's why I like manga/animes like Wotakoi
Joey's point of "Anime that can make you fell any emotion is better than not feel any emotion at all" is very subjective one. Like, I HATE Rent a Girlfriend because characters disgust me so much that I was forced to stop reading it. While even tho One Piece turned into "Oh my God when will it ends" for me I will still wait for next chapter week after week. Some animes are so disgusting and bad that you want to immediately forget about them, but the boring and typical will still have it's audience for their purposes because a lot of ppl want to see the finish of the story that is not disgusting for them, regardless how mediocre it is for them
I can somewhat understand why you think that way but weren’t you excited for the 2nd season of Nagatoro Garnt? (Nagatoro S2 is great!) I genuinely don't care about the ages of the main characters when it comes romance anime. Kindergarten, primary, high school, adult, I don't care. I will watch it if it interests me. But I can understand getting bored of it as some romance shows can definitely get me bored. Especially if the comedy is not hitting, the chemistry is just not there or a main shtick that gets repetitive.
Yeah its like wholesome copium to keep belivin in the word love and dont turn into a bitter nihilist like the main protagonist in OREGAIRU or Tomoko in WATAMOTE
Part of what makes Nagatoro still readable is the characters having goals set in stone that they wish to achieve. Like in the recent chapters they were shockingly close to just straight fucking, I'm not kidding all the side characters were talking about how they probably were right then, but then Naota turns around and says "are you giving up on your goals?" They both know where they stand and have ambitions to get them closer to their ends.

I think romance is kinda one and done type of genre. You can only really make one good romance series since the good ones is more about people developing a relationship and the small fights that happen and that can only be done so many times before it gets old or the fights are so extreme the people shouldn't be dating at all. Romance really works best when it's a side focus where the romance is meant to give a break between the action or as support for the characters
I haven’t found a better romance than the house in Fata Morgana (visual novel). I love kaguya sama and a lot of the good romance manga but for me they really can’t compare to Fata. It’s surprising progressive for the story it tells, tragic as fuck, depressing yet most of all beautiful and wholesome. The first half for me is a 9/10 overall though sections vary from and 8-9.5 for me but the second half is 10/10 the whole way through and I haven’t found something I think is better. I would put the prequel visual novel slightly higher than the first one but slightly below the second half of the first one.
I think he has a good point about a show doing a good job whether you like the characters or not because it invokes emotions. It's like It's always sunny in Philadelphia, none of these people are ever people you would want to be with, but in it's own way, it was able to have a bunch of unlikable characters interacting be just as engaging as a show filled with people you like.
That final argument just remembered me that my nephew liked Blue Lock so I bought him volume 2. Then I looked how many there are. 23 and ongoing??? How many did they need to tell a story??? Maybe it's because in my country mangas are like 10 times their price, but to me, any manga with more than 10 volumes is a masterpiece or money wasted.
Blue Lock makes since with how long it is, since it's going from highschool players to the literal best, but yeah, it could be a little shorter, just by a few chapters tho
I disagree with the My Dress-Up Darling take there. What matters is the journey, not the destination. Seeing their cute moments and development is truly what makes it enjoyable to read. If it ended too fast then, that wouldn't be as fun. She realized she is in love with him. Now she just needs to express it on her way and make him fall for her, realize his feelings for her. You can't just expect him to make a move on her when he isn't even aware that he likes her that way
Destination is important too. If a series have garbage ending like DomeKano, people would still clowned at that series even tho the journey were pretty decent.
@@neidhardt8093 I agree. The problem I had with Horimiya was that the relationship reached a climax too fast, without giving it a satisfying feeling. The MC was kinda odd as well, and the Masoquism moments of the girl were a bit uncomfortable
The point here (and I agree) is that even the JOURNEY feels blank, nothing has happened in the last 10 chapters. After Gojou sleeps over (chapter 75), nothing really happens, is full on cosplay, which is ok but it kinda over did it. Last chapter (88?) was a bit better, we got more Marin, but from 76 forwards it rly dragged IMO
I wonder if garnt has read or watched paradise kiss? There's so much drama. The prequel manga neighborhood story us getting an English release soon too.
tbh QQ (one of my favorite manga but i hate writing that name out) is probably the best harem since Ranma. which, i mean thats not a hard bar to clear. i totally get why the girls fell for futaro, i even got a crush on him myself lol. and the fact that it wasnt every girl falling for him, Itsuki by the end still just saw him as a homie and was just worried about what this whole thing would do to her family. that helped keep it grounded and feel less like straight up pervert fantasy lol. the characters were compelling and distinct too, i hated Ichika for a good long while for what she did to miku lol, i was that invested i guess
i believe there's nothing new you can offer in romance genre, but most good romance story usually refine what already established. even harem manga it's like only two i would consider good. the rest just copying with different skin. and romance anime kinda the same for me.
Some people aren’t in it for the romance but for the romanticisation of romance, no one would actually care to watch an actual romance, that’s why it’s always the will they or won’t they until it reached the “I love you” then done, they want the suspense even though they know how it’s going to play out. It’s a lot like a tragedy but instead of being in suspense of how something is going to end badly it’s the suspense of how it’s going to end with them being happy, because in a tragedy there’s the hunch that something is going to happen badly since minute one and in a “romance” you know it’s going to end with them together, it also seems that the most popular tragedies seem to incorporate a romance plot in some way.

“Put all the styles of a shoujo” not it didn’t…. It still reeks of being a shounen to me
Love is wars comedy is just screaming and misunderstandings, it’s not funny.
I get it. It's because he felt this way, but wishes he felt that way, and didn't want her to realize he feels this way, because then she'd feel that way."
So, it's gone from being an exercise in frustration to being a fun puzzle to unravel.
I don't really have anything to add to this relatively old comment, just want to say I agree 100%
It can be due to complex reasons and still be a dumb decision though, and it doesn't get any less tiring even if you know the underlying cause.
Wotakoi is a good romance anime (with adults), a bit too silly at times but overall a great watch.
Wotakoi is great. But half of it was literally just delayed high school puberty moments. The third couple is the worst offender. And I honestly love it, but I can see other people consider it boring.

You have no idea man. Especially the four pages glory.
If I'm being honest, I don't consider Kaguya romance. I consider it romcom. For me, it's not the best romance but it is the best romcom.

Is Tomo Chan good or is the guy the same oblivious idiot?
Kaguya sama S3 is definitely a peak romance show. I really want the movie to be released in my country.
Truly a trash opinion righ here
What do you even think romance is made out of?
Whether it's the main focus or not, it's just a lot harder for me to get into a show if there isn't going to be at least a little romance.
I have that problem too
For me romance isn't important at all.
I guess the concept of two people being just close friends without turning into romance is too complex for some people to understand

Its like anime only pander to 12yo/25
People who get into adulthood enjoy anime but can barely relate, and its happening a lot with millenials
Nodame Cantabile is a great romance story for adults
@@kawaiic418 Very good suggestion, and something I've done a bit of already. Thank you.
“Irrelevant give me the tsundure girl NOW” “I understand god now”
I don't usually watch romance but lately I've been watching the Ice guy and his cool female colleague and it just gives me life. Idk if it's because it's NOT a high-school romance or if it's because it's just a feel good, no drama, doesn't take itself seriously kinda show. Probably both lol
Hearing Joey call Gojo gay because he didn't immediately have sex with Marin is bizzare.
He just wants the SPICE
Gojo avoiding Marin even tho she's got feelings for him is crazy imo, you gotta go for it if you want her lol
How long is he gonna avoid her? How much more obvious does she have to be
Gojo is a great lesson to all women.
Horimiya is the reason why romance anime always put the conclusion of the couple at the end of the season (even kaguya did!)
Coz it gets boring if they together early on? I guess I can say the same towards Kare Kano, but I really enjoyed that one.
romance anime the average dude hasnt seen:
fruits basket, maid sama, sasaki & miyano, snow white with the red hair etc..
I guess it falls under his opinion of "romance is subjective"
@@piotr004 I watched it ill the end, last season made almost no sense to me and that co dependency thing was just wut? idc if novels are better

Back when I was a lonely 16 year old with no romantic experience, I used to watch far more action and adventure type of anime than romance.
But now ... now it's different. I'm not the same anymore. I'm a lonely 23yo with still no romantic experience, and I've changed to romance anime/manga.
lmao hang in there, king. Or just don't worry about it.
@@andrewsharpe7630 I don't. I enjoy reading them even if they don't offer that much new or different content that other series.
I am the total opposite here. As an adult watching teenager being wishy washy with their love live annoyed me. So I watch action animes now.
What's the best romance you've read?
I like a mix of both. Action romance anime click with me a lot.
Totally agree Dress Up Darling needs to progress the plot (or release a little faster). For waiting one month between chapters it feels like it doesn't go anywhere
There is no main plot in dress up darling, it's a hobby manga.. Also the recent chapters have been great.
14:00 Joey, did you even read Horimiya? They banged by chapter 30
Connor's "nothing ever happens" stance is why I love Kaguya sama so much
Its favorite running gag seems to be "Oh you thought this was a one off gag? SURPRISE it's actually an important plot point and we were progressing the story the whole time >:D"
I don't even remember that happe- oh, right.... the reason why Karen recited the bible
Horimiya being a new template of romance and straight to the point that shows you the couple after they are together, its not the same as other romance and they just blame it like that....
Horimiya does get boring after they get together. The anime that really did well with the "new template" is Bunny girl senpai.

I couldn't stop thinking about Connor & Joeys points before
Oh yeah I love the ice guy show too. Such a great josei anime. I have all the manga too.
If I am not mistaken, the dress up darling story is made by a woman, so it's not a male/female problem when writing, it's more so "does this person have any actual experience with romance".
And in most cases than not, they just want to milk the series for as much it's worth it, which just sucks..
@@tribopower that's interesting 🤔. I didn't even think about that, I assumed it was a guy . Yeah anilist says Shinichi Fukuda's a female.
Maybe that's cause every anime/manga mentioned in this video is a shounen, even tho girls are the primary creator and consumer of the genre. But sure go off
yeah I confused when all of the title they mention are all shounen
I don't even considered all those title romance in the first place more of a harem, slice of life, drama genre
maybe because I seperate romcom & romance in the first place then only consider shoujo stuff as romance anime
No shoujo, josei, Yuri, BL, etc. They're veey limited on romance.
because they fucking stopped making shoujo anime lmao
Connor just wants more milfs
Connor hates most harems because of how generic and wimpy most of the protagonists are. There are a few he likes tho, he’s talked about The World God Only Knows and The Irregular at Magic High School in the past
Golden Boy is over the top.
@@Michael-de9cg The MC is one of the best parts of it.
Yeah, I'm also unsure what he implied with the Horimiya take.
I think he just means Horimya is boring... but it's not meant to be a trashy train-wreck like Domestic Girlfriend or Rent-a-Girlfriend anyway.
Horymia is boring that's what he meant
It is boring tbh, just because they had sex in episode 7 and got together early doesn't mean it's not 🤷

I thought I was a little over romance anime after all these years, and then yesterday I somehow rewatched Toradora in one sitting. I'm not over it. It's still a happy drug for me, and there simply isn't much good romance coming out at the moment. Far more enjoyable than actually trying to date.
The Quintessential Quintuplets will always be my goat

Wotakoi is pretty cliche tho
@@chasinghaze0962 true, but it has older characters and lives who i definitely can relate too
Joey's point of "Anime that can make you fell any emotion is better than not feel any emotion at all" is very subjective one. Like, I HATE Rent a Girlfriend because characters disgust me so much that I was forced to stop reading it. While even tho One Piece turned into "Oh my God when will it ends" for me I will still wait for next chapter week after week. Some animes are so disgusting and bad that you want to immediately forget about them, but the boring and typical will still have it's audience for their purposes because a lot of ppl want to see the finish of the story that is not disgusting for them, regardless how mediocre it is for them
well mediocre and disgusting can be the same thing to some people.
I'm surprised no one is commenting about "My teenage highschool comedy romance" anime.
It's because you can't write a really long manga about a realistic relationship dynamic. They would fuck in the first, latest second volume
Garnt will not admit about Nagatoro being peak romance
I think he forgot to brought it up then since he was pretty excited for the new season in his Winter 2023 video.
I can somewhat understand why you think that way but weren’t you excited for the 2nd season of Nagatoro Garnt? (Nagatoro S2 is great!)
I genuinely don't care about the ages of the main characters when it comes romance anime. Kindergarten, primary, high school, adult, I don't care. I will watch it if it interests me.
But I can understand getting bored of it as some romance shows can definitely get me bored. Especially if the comedy is not hitting, the chemistry is just not there or a main shtick that gets repetitive.
My favorite romance anime were: Tonikawa, Kaguya and Actually I am(the manga version, anime butchered it)
I just can't deal with how most romance mc's don't interact with other humans as if they're real people.
rent a girlfriend so bad to the point characters don't even feel like people anymore
I despise romance anime but for some reason I god damn love My Love Story. There is something about that big dude that I just can't get enough of.

Part of what makes Nagatoro still readable is the characters having goals set in stone that they wish to achieve. Like in the recent chapters they were shockingly close to just straight fucking, I'm not kidding all the side characters were talking about how they probably were right then, but then Naota turns around and says "are you giving up on your goals?" I think romance is kinda one and done type of genre.
Romance is the best genre

It's like It's always sunny in Philadelphia, none of these people are ever people you would want to be with, but in it's own way, it was able to have a bunch of unlikable characters interacting be just as engaging as a show filled with people you like.

The Horimiya comparison was terrible too.
@@rdwn1999 Yeah, destination is important. I prefer the journey since its the build-up/development to the grand finale.

The point here (and I agree) is that even the JOURNEY feels blank, nothing has happened in the last 10 chapters. After Gojou sleeps over (chapter 75), nothing really happens, is full on cosplay, which is ok but it kinda over did it. Check out Kokoro Connect, one of my favorite engaging Romance Dramas
Boarding school Juliet and Midori Days were my favorite romance manga but theyre so underrated .
