In addition, there have been 3 franco/germanic wars beetween 1870 and 1940, so maybe France was a kind of underlying topic for Germany. The only thing I don't understand in the movie is why such a cultured and high-ranking person would be given a mandate to administrate a village. Royan, Angoulême, La Rochelle, Poitiers, Niort ok. But a village? Maybe some administrators were itinerants...
