I've long enjoyed Hilary Hahn's version of this Concerto. But, Anne gives an outstanding performance of the Barber Concerto. This is my new favorite version.
Finally, a violinist that plays musically and with soul. What passion! She makes the violin cry. This performance actually made me cry! She is my favorite violinist of today! Her sound and vibrato remind me of the late great David Oistrakh.
I remember first hearing Anne Akiko Meyers a long time ago, playing in the classical record store. I think it was Lalo Symphonie Espagnole. I remember thinking what a gorgeous vocal singing tone the violinist had. Of course I bought the CD, heh. I still think Anne Akiko Meyers plays with a uniquely expressive "human voice" singing quality of tone, and of course great technical brilliance. A great artist.
Questa artista non solo suona con il cuore , ma ogni nota viene approfondita da lei con tanto studio, per il rispetto che nutre verso gli ascoltatori presenti in teatro che la ringraziano con un lungo, convincente e caloroso applauso. Complimenti !
WoW I wish I had been there to experience it live , the emotion Anne put into that 2nd movement and the breathtaking finale - a superb performance from Anne , the conductor , the whole Orchestra and the audience listening intently - simply one of those perfect moments in a lifetime 💕
Granted, this is a thrilling performance of this marvelous work. Orchestra and soloist alike. Not to mention the oboist who opens the 2nd movement. Bravo. But Joshua Bell's performance is still ravishing to my ears. I have not heard Hahn perform this.
Bill D It's probably just a bias on my part. I am not the biggest Joshua Bell fan, just because of his (in my humble opinion) butchering of the Sibelius, which is my absolute favorite piece of music ever written. Still, I think his Tchaikovsky is the best right now for sure and he is overall a very good talent.
I love so much to hear your wonderful play and hope one day I can attend the orchestra directly with my family. Thank you for download all your play in the youtube. God Bless you always.
my favorite interpretation of the piece. something about the quality of her tone and musicality feels just how i’d imagine barber had envisioned it. :)
First time, hearing this concerto was on the radio, yesterday. Had to listen to the first movement theme again today, because it's a pretty cool, little theme. Anne plays this concerto very well.
nice trumpet playing. blows the entrance at 22:38, then plays a solo at 22:55. granted, this piece is tricky for everybody at the end, but still. the conductor was quite clear.
@@7777Scion well it's true. The violin legends today even had performances that didn't go so well. Mistakes are a part of music because they encourage you to learn from them and grow.
Congratulations Anne for your beautiful and brilliant music and playing! Congratulations also to the orchestra and its conductor for their great performance, which perfectly accompanied the soloist.
10:44 2nd Mvmnt. Also Thank you so much for reposting this on your personal page. This is my favorite version and it was frustrating to have it being taken down all of the time.
Amazing how something like the Bruch violin concerto which IMO is vastly inferior can be performed regularly while this beautiful lyrical work is still quite a rarity though I think it's being more widely heard now than around 20 years ago. Thanks for this upload.
GR Joe What is being gay got to do with this? uh? If Barber is movie music to you then Bruch is a sickly sweet dessert to me - the great thing about music is that it affects us all in different ways.
Superbe !
Better late than never! For me this is one of the great 20th C violin concertos: maybe not up there with Sibelius, Britten and Walton, but not far behind. I hope they have also done Barber's Cello concerto by now: even better than the violin concerto for me...
I agree with cameronpaul. barber's violin concerto gets nothing like the airtime given to his ever so famous adagio. a shame,it's such a clever yet beautiful piece.
I am not an expert, however, I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Meyers' rendition of the concerto. To me some of the criticisms of Ms. Meyers' rendition may be based on expert ears, however, I wonder how non-expert persons think about it?
Have you listened to Gil Shahams performance at the BBC Proms? Anne's performance was good, but I feel it had some very raw, uncontrolled tones from time to time
Yes, looking and listening more carefully, I think you're right - prob. the Spanish Strad. If there were more closeups I could see better.! BTW, I actually tried the Molitor myself, on- 2 occasions. RK
The opening is a bit dry, as so many good female violinists are wont to do with this concerto because the melodies are so very male in a lot of ways. BUT - the rest is amazing - incredibly well informed, precise playing by soloist, orchestra, and conductor. Loved the expression on her face at the end. Wow - an incredible historical snapshot here.
@@andrewpetersen5272 I was pretty drunk when I wrote that, and had forgotten about it. But I stand behind the notion nonetheless. Barber's violin concerto is what every young male composer angry about allegedly pseudointellectual postmodern composition dreams of writing.
+Brad Hipsher I heard Anne interviewed about the Strad. The tone/sound was all she talked about! Of course the $200k bow she uses probably doesn't hurt any!!?:) Seriously $200k, yep
She is a first class violinist but she rushes through the 1st movt as if she is trying to catch a train. Barber gives the violin part so much freedom to develope and she doesn‘t make use of it. Listen to Perlman and the BSO. That is for me the best. Orch here is really quite good.
0:00 - 10:30 Movement I - Allegro
10:35 - 19:25 Movement II - Andante
19:27 - 23:06 Movement III - Presto in Molto
thumbs up so others can see!
thanks
Premieres??? You mean, she plays it for the first time? The Premiere was in 1940 with King Jascha!
Thank you!
@@callasnuts yeah, but why are you commenting that on this? They're not the one who made the vid xD
Also, the "premier" part was bc this was the first time the orchestra played it. They didn't mean the first time it was played.
I love this performance, She is often overlooked
I've long enjoyed Hilary Hahn's version of this Concerto. But, Anne gives an outstanding performance of the Barber Concerto. This is my new favorite version.
you can't have for too long - her recording is very recent ...
What a stunning sound she has….and she really tells a story, very touching in the second movement…
Finally, a violinist that plays musically and with soul. What passion! She makes the violin cry. This performance actually made me cry! She is my favorite violinist of today! Her sound and vibrato remind me of the late great David Oistrakh.
I love the whole performance, but especially Anne's capture of the third movement. Played with heart, for sure.
The second movement just kills me...so beautiful.
It’s one of my favorite movements in all of classical music. It’s just beautiful. Poignant and all-encompassing.
I love her. I love how she doesn’t fit into anyone’s box🌷
21:05 she’s the first person I’ve heard doing ponticello there, but I love it!! So raw!
amazing, I love how she plays Barber concert Anne Akiko Meyers, genius!

I love the way Mrs. Anna Akiko Mayers plays the violin
Bravo Anne!! This is the first time I've heard you play the first movement. Brings tears to my eyes.
trumpet enters a bar early at the end. woops!
Such beauty, intensity and perfection bring tears to my eyes each time I hear this.
Because the second movement is so beautiful and the feeling she puts into it, it seems at one point she wants to cry and who would blame her.
Splendid performance!Thank you for uploading..

The oboe at the opening of the second movement was absolutely beautiful
Agreed! Entire 2nd movement incredibly heart felt.
great performance & what a great orchestra too! so satisfying to see all the bows in absolute unison
I was at this concert!! I met Anne and the US Ambassador to Slovenia after the performance!
Deeply touching at times, dazzling at others, always splendid.
I love your music, playing and watching you with your children.
you play so beautifully from your heart. Thanks.
Strong performance by Meyers and good to see George Pehlivanian is still in the business. Unfortunately I lost sight of him ....
Such passion. She is magnificent.
I love the joy on her face at the end of the Presto. She knows she killed it.
Great sensual sound: this violin! Great Akiko!

Wow, best performance of this concerto I have heard.
What/who else have you heard?
Bell, Hahn, Perlman.

my favorite interpretation of the piece. something about the quality of her tone and musicality feels just how i’d imagine barber had envisioned it. :)
Agree, she has depth of passion that I haven't heard
I wish I could know what she is thinking around 14 minutes
My favorite performance of this masterwork.

at the end, but still. the conductor was quite clear.
+Dan Cornelius that was my favorite part!
That was some awful trumpet playing but I'm not sure how you know the conductor was clear since he wasn't even in frame at that moment.
But still, part of music is making mistakes, we aren't perfect. Mistakes are bound to happen at anytime.

Samuel Barber: un neo romántico modernista consumado. Precioso concierto. Gracias!

Superb oboe playing in the second movement!

Just listening, you could take it for a Joseph . . . . (As a young student, I got to noodle on my teacher's Strad, the now-disappeared 1716 Colossus.)
It falls apart at the end. Orchestra needed more rehearsal time. Great performance from Miss Meyers.
Is the piano with the soloist in the first movement? Some parts sound odd. Maybe because I've never noticed there was a piano in this concerto.
She equals the performances by Jimmy Page in the 70’s. Mind blowing performance.
