I found it hard to believe that you had never heard Siouxsie and the Banshees, so here is a brief history of them: Siouxsie and Steven were members of a Sex Pistols fan group called the Bromley Contingent. They appeared on an interview show with the Sex Pistols. The host was flirting with Siouxsie and Johnny Rotten (who was drunk at the time) starting calling the host a dirty bastard, etc. The show was immediately censored. Afterward, for a show, Sid Vicious played drums for the Banshees before he joined The Sex Pistols. From 1982-1984, Robert Smith of The Cure was part of the band. Budgie got his name from a joke the others played on him. A budgie refers to a parakeet and Budgie had a fear of birds. It was also during the recording of Juju that Siouxsie and Budgie created a side band called The Creatures. They lasted from 1981 until 2005. Siouxsie and Budgie had also gotten married. They divorced in 2007. My favorite songs are 1) Cities into Dust, 2)Arabian Nights, 3) Israel, and 4)Suburban Relapse. The Creatures: 1) Godzilla, 2)Second Floor, 3) Killing Time, and 4) Guillotine. If you are still interested in female vocalists, I recommend: Nina Hagen ("Hand Grenade"), Lene Lovich ("I Think We're Alone Now"), Chumbawamba ("Homophobia"), Crass ("Berketex Bride"), Lydia Lunch ("Black Juju"), Laurie Anderson ("Language is a Virus") and The Flying Lizards ("Money").
The Creatures, a band I miss a lot. All She Could Ask For and Broken are sublime. Slipping Away is an amazing tune. The whole of Erasercuts is just brilliant, is it not?! And then there's Boomerang....so much fascinating music from Siouxsie et al. Since Love Crime no one has heard a peep from SSioux and that's just sad.
@@sjfvet519us Sioux lost her voice at least once before and came back. I hope this is just a rumor. But the longer she stays away, the more likely it seems to be true. BTW, I was able to grab her hand while onstage performing Guillotine in '98. It was a great moment.
Glad you got around to this Nick! The song's video is also worth checking out. Siouxsie has even sung a duet with Morrissey! (I think it was called Interlude)
John Mcgeoch was an amazing guitar player, the best in this band history imo. Check out songs like Into the Light, Monitor, Slowdive, and much more! Also, Ian Astbury's first band (The Southern Death Cult) was very influenced by Siouxsie and the Banshees, and early Cult records like Dreamtime and Love too.
Best band of the 80s. Highly creative, post punk and neo psychedelic. Try Israel, Cities in the Dust, Stargazer, Green Fingers, monitor, night shift, so many amazing songs!
By far my fave song by these guys. Most consider it the best single. Cities in Dust. They do a killer cover of The Passenger by Iggy Pop and This town isn’t big enough for the both of us by Sparks.
I know I’m late, but to truly grasp how groundbreaking this band was for its time you HAVE to listen to their debut album, The Scream (1978). That album alone has been cited as influencing artists from Joy Division and The Cure to Massive Attack and Faith No More, so I’m sure you can imagine how much their legacy grew even further in just four albums’ time.
Great song! You mention how they have an old 60’s sound. That’s because their sound fuses 70’s punk and 60’s psychedelic along with their dark goth sound. There’s lots of Beatles, Iggy Pop, and Velvet Underground influence.
The Banshees Psychedelic journey continues. Check out the actual video of this track. Joy Division and The Cult came after The Banshees and were no doubt influenced by them. I believe the influence in Siouxsie's voice you hear is more Jim Morrison than Ian Astbury. I know that she also digs Julie Driscoll, Nico, and Grace Slick.
Only got into Siouxsie and the Banshees recently myself, they are very influential on a number of bands, Israel, Love in a void, Hong Kong Gardens, Painted Bird all great songs. Sid Viscious played drums on their first live gig.
🔊Siouxsie made me dance my legs down to my knees then!Great choice!👌🏼 Grew up with that!I‘m 52! My favorite are their early works like Eve white/Eve black! DAZZLE and MELT are still on my playlist! She’s related to the Cure! THE CREATURES was another band she played with!🖤 Thanx,Nick!🔊
Siouxsie's appearance into pop culture: Face to Face by Siouxsie and the Banshees featured into Tim Burton's Batman Returns ( 1992 ). Love Crime by Siouxsie Sioux & Brian Reitzell brought Siouxsie out of retirement to give birth to this epic of a song for Brian Fuller's Hannibal series finale!
Siouxsie is one of the most effortlessly cool women who's ever set foot on a stage. Her voice, her demeanour, her fashion sense, her songs - even the way she always sang in an English accent. Great band too, terrific players without being showy (as you've just said!). This is probably my favourite song of theirs, but there are loads of other bangers that have been mentioned by other commenters. They really evolved their sound from their scratchy, punky beginnings, to a more produced, layered sound, but without ever becoming staid or predictable. Check out Peekaboo, Cities In Dust, and Kiss Them For Me.
Siouxsie and the Banshees most famous Beatles cover was Dear Prudence which featured Robert Smith of The Cure, they also covered another Beatles song Helter Skelter
Siouxsie & The Banshees were incredibly influential. They more or less invented "Goth", though they hated that tag. They pre-dated The Cult, Sisters Of Mercy etc by a number of years. Their first album was a total original ; austere, metallic (not in the Heavy Metal sense), brutal and amoral.
The next track on juju is the real highlight and it's got a super menacing bass. Track 2 and 4 on juju are objectively the best in my subjective opinion. My dad once met one of the crickets btw, buying strings for a show they were playing at the Guild Hall in Preston in the late 80s or early 90s.
Siouxsie Sioux, one of the Bromley Contingent. It was only ever supposed to be a career that lasted one night, where she would sing the Lords Prayer and then retire, yet she endures.
I wish there were more retroreactions like this but please, someone react to a song other than Spellbound. It's great, but it's also been done to death. Liked your comments about the bass being "threatening". It's interesting to see a younger generation listen to SATB. The Banshees always wanted to bring out elements of the human experience and style that were not realized fully until the listener is willing to go deep with the band, the song and their messages/lyrics. Siouxsie wanted her guitarists to have a distinct sound, like a Hitchcock thriller where the character is distressed at the edge of a cliff. Try making a musical note with that! Joan McGeoch ( pronounced Mc -Gee-Ock) was great on this tune.
Brilliant tune well advanced music influenced many bands to this day. Robert Smith from the cure started his career in this band. Really the real deal. Aw the best Mac
other suggestions for female singers: -'Tunic (Song for Karen)' by Sonic Youth to listen to Kim Gordon -'Samson and Delilah' by Shirley Manson ( of Garbage ), a song featured in the Terminator TV series. -maybe some Yeah Yeah Yeahs song ( 'Heads will roll' which has a Siouxsie-esque vibe , or 'Rich' ) to listen to Karen O's voice. Even on the Led Zeppelin's 'Imigrant Song' that she did with Trent Reznor for the OST of the US Version of The girl with the dragon tattoo -'Lighting is My Girl' by Auf der Maur ( although not fan of her work in general ). She's Canadian. and a couple of electro artists: 'Beat and the Pulse' or 'Lose it' by Austra (the vocalist and only constant band member is Canadian as well) 'Pass this On' by The Knife to listen to Karin Dreijer also known as Fever Ray from her other project and widely known as the guest vocalist in Röyksopp's 'What Else is There?' 'Skull Fact' or 'Dark Allies' by Light Asylum to listen to the super deep voice of Shannon Funchess

Yep similar to Joy Division. Bassist is sick in both bands. This is better because of the singer and the way the music has inflections and lower parts. Siouxsie and the Banshees do it better.
Robert Smith of The Cure started out in Siouxsie and the Banshees. Apparently, Siouxsie went on holiday and came back to find out he quit the band. I don't think that went down too well with her
Robert Smith didn't start off in Siouxsie, he had recorded four albums with The Cure before joining the Banshees( three of those albums are the Cure's best ) he did step in before that when The Cure were touring with The Banshees and their guitarist and drummer left during the tour, Robert played in both bands every night.
Ok as promised ,my interpretation ,I believe this song is not a love song or anything else ,but it's basically about adolescence. When the chemicals are charging in your body it can sometimes be ok , but sometimes you feel like you are not yourself anymore ,and it's the sensation you feel you are going insane, I also believe in the paranormal too , and I think the song is about someone not knowing if they are A, Psychologically ill , B, Going through adolescence or C sensing something an unknown supernatural presence x@@InsignificantNick

Even at 55 this gives me goose bumps all over, or is it still the thought of Siouxsie Sioux?
Maybe both!
Saw them in 1980. Fantastic. My favourite song is Love in a Void.
Love all their stuff and love in a void is typical of their early songs, as is make up to break up.
