I'm a white South African women and used the taxis every day while I was studying in Cape Town. It was super stressful at first. But I found that they are super understanding if you are of a different culture (or foreigner) and dont understand how the taxis operate. For the most part, my experience was possitive. Except for one day... usually I was the only white person in the taxi but that particular day there was another white women. The taxi driver accused her of not paying him and she kept arguing with him saying that she did pay... eventually they parked the taxi in the middle of the main road and pulled her out by her hair 😂 The whole time she kept saying that she did pay (even while she was lying in the middle of the road she kept screaming "I did pay"). I'm sitting in the back thinking "lady, just fkn pay them again" 😂 I was scared they would think we are related and that I'd get pulled out by my hair too 😂😂😂

In CPT we don't use hand signs or say stuff like "Sho't Left" etc.
Also, the drivers are actually a little more accountable since most customers have direct contact with the taxi associations CATA, CODETA etc.

The taxis have been improved greatly these days. They are locally made by Toyota and almost in all cases they are road worthy and modern. However, taxis are mostly used by people who stay in townships who do not have cars. In the suburbs people either drive their own cars or use Uber. I don't see you guys taking these kind of taxis when visiting SA. So I would say only people needing this form of transport use it, since it is extremely available and covers areas that are not served with busses. They are the back bone of transport for commuters, there is a taxi for every route. They also cover long distances, I would think that the long distance taxis are the ones where you are likely to wait for long, before it fills up. Old taxis have largely been removed from the roads and the traffic officers are always on the look out and inspecting them for road worthiness.

That was the other part of it but the other part if you are going on holiday as a large family, using family cars and a taxi, don't be suprised when all the children even babies crying for the long distance taxi ride and leave mom or dad in a posh car to and from vacation. No matter the hours on the road they will be awake and having fun all the way. The small cars end up laggage transporters and for old family members😂. The long distance ones are usually well maintained, comfortable and drivers are usually excellent Djs. As an optional curtacy you share your meals and book an extra room for your driver, otherwise they sleep on the cars, they don't ask, it's just curtacy.

Hand signs make things so much easier. When you have multiple taxis coming down the road. You just sign and the relevant taxi stops.

I'd suggest you don't use these types of taxis while in SA. Even the locals don't prefer them, we use them because they are convenient, you can catch them anywhere and they are much cheaper than uber. As for safety and comfort .... forget about that🤣🤣

Taking taxis all my life. He speaks the truth. Just doesn't explain things fully but good enough. There are female taxi drivers btw. I know taxi drivers to protest by driving side by side across the freeway at 10km per hour during morning rush hour. And thousands of people will follow quietly behind without saying anything. Even druglords think twice before messing with taxi bosses. 'Taxi violence' is areal and common term here. Great video. Keep it real

The Ubers here in Cape Town don't seem to mind you sitting in front. I only sat at the back when Covid restrictions were in full swing.
Many of the drivers also don't have passenger permits, so to avoid getting pulled over by cops and having their cars impounded, they'd rather have you sitting in front so it's not as obvious that they're an Uber.
