I've built a lot of early Production Porsche engines , that is nothing that ever came in a 1960's Porsche. Sounds like an early 70's RSR or maybe a SC engine that's been stepped on .
Owning an early 911, I can relate to how he has to play the wheel so much. Even in normal driving at highway speeds on twisty roads, you constantly have to steer the car to place it correctly, and keep it pointing the right way. The driver here appears to be a master of it, at any speed!
The driver is a friend of mine 'Pascal Pandelaar' from the Netherlands, not Roman Caresani...he's only the owner of the car. Pascal is not racing for his profession, but he should be! The car is preparated by DUEL MOTORSPORT by Ed Poland, he's a magician in building classic racecars!
@@tadcraig3162 No not fully, but those old 911's were always trying to find the nearest wall or tree to hug! Horrible cars to drive! EXCELLENT driving skills displayed here by the driver! 👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Eau Rouge was great, but the pass on the Cortina wide open in 5th gear was one of the hairiest moves I've ever seen.... He's at full opposite lock on the steering and never lifts... balls of steel
Bevan Dennill It would appear to be, however the gearbox in this car is in all likelihood an early production 901 dogleg 5speed with first gear being in the lower left. We are most likely watching him utilize gears 2-5 in this video.
He passes everything in sight and all the comments are about how bad he is or about how badly the car is set up. How many of you have ever been on a race course?
that's why I love porsches,in the hands of a skilled driver this car will beat yo ass, nimble, fast and squirrely, them germans know how to make sportscar, and sweet enough to go to the grocery store.
@Southern Fun Its a joke. In Fast and the Furious they say that the main character is "Granny shifting, not double clutching like he should" after he loses a race and almost crashes his car.
one thing i've never understood about double clutching is that you are doubling up your neutral drive. i'm not experienced in these old cars, and have really only taught myself. but you clutch to take out of gear, unclutch at stick in neutral, rev match, then clutch to put in your gear. i've always mis matched my clutch to throttle, so that i catch my throttle right as i'm letting off, just enough to rev, and downshift. its the quickest way to down shift, but it hurts clutches, and i don't really know how it would impact these older cars. i'm sure it'd ruin them. but i'm quick to say the least...either way, you never see someone dancing in their 911 around turns. it takes great skill.
I can't get bored of watching this video. It's a so thin border line of speed and grip along with the crazy engine sound. I wish I can upload something similar from my private archive once in my life.
I've driven spa in an E46 M3 and a porsche boxster, and I thought I was having fun!!! That's proper on the limit driving, I can do that in my gti, but in a classic 911... Wow!
I've raced a '67 911 at Silverstone and Snetterton and can attest to the 'always sideways' motion of the car as seen in Caresani's driving. Just a dab of brake and the rear steps out, but oh so easy to catch and steer thereafter on the throttle through the corners. Trick is to get the car to rotate into the corner but I ran out of skill before managing that! Wonderful cars to drive and eminently 'checkable'. Just try and forget the car's value when turning in!
I remember a ride in a 1974 Porsche 911 over 30yrs years ago with a friend who was a reasonable driver. he took me for a spin around the block as i had been pestering him since he brought it. I still grin thinking about it as he drove like this ace , but on the streets.
This is NOT Roman, but Pascal Pandelaar driving in qualifying!!! Great car control, but of course the tyres won't last the race this way. That is why he backed off a little bit in the race.
I overcooked a turn in my 73S on day one, driving it home, went side ways at 130 kph and corrected it, powered out of it clean. But I never did it on purpose and I did need fresh underpants that day. This guy rocks.
I'm surprised at how often he gets into 1st gear. I'm amazed at how quickly he can shift that transmission-- never that fast in my SC. I'm sure he could teach me a thing or two.
Same here. Had an SC and had to be careful with that 915 box. Long throws that would grind if not paying attention/hasty, especially during a cold morning.
I don't think that was 1st gear. Remember that old 911s have "dog-leg" gearboxes, where first gear is left and down. That was probably second gear (middle up) you were seeing.
Spa is a very fast course. I’ve driven many short wheelbase 911s over the years, they’re very good at short, twisty courses. The high speed stability was always tough. That’s why Porsche lengthened the wheelbase in ‘69. The guy piloting this run is a grand master with a 911.
I love how he's drift steering in 4th gear like it's nothing then at 1:04 he has to stop the mirror from vibrating...just gonna one hand drive at 100 mph because that noise is just too distracting
great skills and shrewd driving manouvres when overtaking half on the green. This guy knows what he is doing that is for sure. And these old 911 were all abit tail happy. I enjoyed watching it tremendeously. Please post more similar ones. Regards Harry
Notice how corrections are made without a full lift from throttle, and some even involve applying more. This is done to maintain and manage weight transfer, which is a most critical skill when driving a rear engined car. This man's technique is how a classic 911 is driven for maximum performance. Drifting is required.
Leh keen is the driver, he knows how to handle a Porsche. You should look at his POV nordschleiffe 24h video in the rain on a pitch black track. Amazing!
This is what most young drivers just don't understand. Yes, a modern car may be faster. But MAN, are old cars a ball to drive! You steer with your feet and the car is rarely pointing the direction it's headed. Such fun! And this guy is a MASTER. Another great video is of the 1987 Ruf Porsche 911 Yellowbird at the Nurburgring. Art in motion...
Great balance and the driver knows his car well. In the past all quick drivers drove pretty much like that, because the power was not enough:) Just a bit more speed in the corner and if the car is not stiff as a rock the tail is happy and easy to control. Great on-board.
When I watch auto racing on broadcast television, I think to myself, "That looks awesome. I'd like to do that. I bet I could do that with proper training." Then I see this in-car footage and I think, "There is no effing way I could do that. Holy crap."
exactly the same as me on GT6 with the Lotus Elise 190... hahaha, a lot of fun! jokes apart he is rocking the 911, nailing all the curves and passing all the other pilots like if they were parked on the side of the street.... Really a great video, and what a sound! UAU, really awesome
I seen some driving in my time. But damn this guy is a boss behind the wheel of a 911 and 2:36...Did he just pass a car?..That was passing car? I said damn..
I love when cars required driver skill to make them fast, not all of the electronics and driver aids. Race Cars should not have traction control, DRS, and all this other bullshit. Lets bring car and driver skill back into play.
Lovely how efficient an overhanging rear weight can be. Better traction, better braking and of course not as good in making perfect smooth arcs or each corner, but this video illustrates it very well. The car is not particularly badly set up but it does not really mater. Just imagine if the current F1 cars of today had a rear engine configuration. Now that would be funny.
Great video! I don't think there was a single corner where he didn't get the back end out lol. Excellent driving. Spa looks like such a great track too. Would love to go there in my motor someday .
Heel and toe, double clutch downshifts, oversteer every corner and turn, in an old 911, this man has the biggest balls of all mankind.
Watch Leh Keen at le mans.
Go watch old videos of Isle of Man super bikes then tell me about big balls.
That pass on the Lotus Cortina or whatever at 2:46 was insane!
I come back to this video once a year or so. Just beautiful skill.
Oversteering on Eau Rouge, I would shit my pants immediately .
And in Blanchimont too.
I did.Right on my comfy chair.
Xavier Capela lol either that or have some sort of a enlightening experience!!
I've built a lot of early Production Porsche engines , that is nothing that ever came in a 1960's Porsche.
Sounds like an early 70's RSR or maybe a SC engine that's been stepped on .
just a very well built 2.0 with open stack carbs, For somebody who has built a lot of them , you sure don't know the sound to well.

Holy crap I thought these old timer races were just for fun. That guy was driving like he was in a real GP
William Trowbridge historic racing is often really competitive

Like a boss! Is he driving on the grass to pass cars?

The best part comes at 1:53 when he keeps turning right on a left-hand turn. Or the massive opposite lock on 2:48. Man... He's got this.
Dude kept the throttle and just steered through it what balls he has. Never let off to catch himself
No words. The art of race driving. This man and the car are in one piece..
LIKE A BOSS!!
Gut vid!
LOOL
This video gives the dictionary definition meaning of: "like a boss"!
Drift through Eau Rouge... Wow...
Eau Rouge was great, but the pass on the Cortina wide open in 5th gear was one of the hairiest moves I've ever seen.... He's at full opposite lock on the steering and never lifts... balls of steel
Agreed...
mfc2257 if he lifts there he will lose it probably.
mfc2257 but... Its a 4 speed...

+jockellis this guy is an awesome driver,to do this in a old 911 , very special !
didnt see one comment like this
Passing a Mini or 912 (i think) sure is an event!
Łukasz Dudek MINI OR A 912 !! HOW ABOUT THE FORD FALCON !!! bad ass 😄😄
jockellis I don't think he's a bad driver at all! Probably just an enthusiast driver though.
that's why I love porsches,in the hands of a skilled driver this car will beat yo ass, nimble, fast and squirrely, them germans know how to make sportscar, and sweet enough to go to the grocery store.
Not granny shifting, double clutching like he should.

Does anyone else think this guy would make a good dancer ? Precision and car control that makes it look so easy. Excellent post thank you.
That's a lot of correction going around that cabin. Love it!
I could watch this guys driving all day!!! Never seen something look so natural to a driver!
understeer? Ain´t nobody got time for that.
vivalaphill couse he was busy with oversteer XD
@@TheEryk03 ...and shifting body weight for no apparent reason! 👍

Qu'il est agréable ces anciennes voitures à Spa , Porsche , Cortina , Jaguar E ,etc...merci pour la vidéo.
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!
I love the way that thing sounds and it looks so fun to drive!
Absolutely love the steeringwheel work here. Looks very challenging. Congratulations on the driver.
His composure is probably the most impressive thing to me. Unreal... ZERO panicking & as smooth as can be.
Great skills.
You hit 10 with this one. I love classic cars on classic tracks. Thank You
Caresani driving in his comfort zone. Bravo, thanks for the lift!!!

Talk about tail happy! That takes serious skill just keeping it on the track, let alone going on a rampage like that!
Best Spa video EVER. And that probably includes the future too...
Using every single bit of the track too. Nice control. Looks like he is having fun aswel. Top driver
Drifting on the raidillion..
Oh shit
Serious skills on display!!! This guy is awesome!
Awesome balanced driving! Salute and respect to the very capable driver!
Perfect title for this video. Great driving.(drifting)
The physics involved in this dance is astonishing!
this driver shows us all how it's done properly. A good setup has lots of oversteer, and a little understeer. Wow this is beautiful indeed
Amazing driving! looks like a fun racing car
2:47!!! Amazing courage and technique!!!
This is NOT Roman, but Pascal Pandelaar driving in qualifying!!!
Great car control, but of course the tyres won't last the race this way. That is why he backed off a little bit in the race.

That's a thing of beauty there - the ballet of man and machine...
Gollee- bum, that man was having to fight the Porsche's tendency to oversteer wildly. But he was fast and smooth, a winning combo.
fantastic highlighted by that move outside the e-type
